Blessing others through community service

During the week when actual temperatures hit the triple-digit mark, volunteers with Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond (MTBB) continued to work, bettering the lives of local homeowners by completing service projects that included painting, repairing decks, installing flooring, replacing siding, repairing stucco walls and doing yard work.

Wearing distinctive green T-shirts bearing the slogan “Blessed to Bless,” volunteers worked at 54 sites, including 51 area homes and three community locations. Workdays were held from July 17 to 20. A closing celebration, featuring an ice cream social, was held on July 21 at Immaculate Conception Church in Birdsboro.

According to MTBB board member Stuart Wells, MTBB - now in its 11th year - was even larger this year than in the past. “This year had more new volunteers participating in Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond than ever before,” he stated. “For 2024, 65 first-time local volunteers have joined the community outreach program, bringing the total number of volunteer participants to 169. Eight local churches have also partnered with MTBB to support the ministry.”

Each morning, the crews gathered at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Birdsboro, where church members prepared breakfast for the volunteers, who then departed to the various work sites with provided packed lunches. The days also ended at St. Mark’s, where participants took part in a prayer service and ate dinner.

Churchtown Day: A summer tradition

Now in its 40th year, Churchtown Day will be presented by the Caernarvon Historical Society on Saturday, Aug. 3. In addition to community yard sales along Main Street through the town, there will be a pancake breakfast at the Caernarvon Fire Company and a sale of items offered at the historical society building. The event will be held rain or shine.

Yard sales will begin at 7 a.m. on Route 23 in Churchtown, as well as in neighboring communities.

Caernarvon Historical Society will also host a flea market at its property, 2148 Main St., Narvon, and at Caernarvon Township Park next door.

According to historical society president Yvonne Styer, Churchtown Day began in 1984 and is always held on the first Saturday in August. The only year the event was not held was 2020 due to the pandemic. “(Churchtown Day) used to be just (yard sales at) people’s houses and the society. Now we expanded to where the school used to be. Rangers receive recognition, plan event

The Chester County Commissioners issued a proclamation recognizing the county’s park rangers in celebration of World Ranger Day, July 31.

Instead of heading to the commissioners’ public meeting in West Chester to be honored, park rangers Michael Trzaska, Patrick Conlin, and Sissy Pavolic diverted to county parks and trails to assess conditions and help the facilities’ parks maintenance team with cleanup from a recent storm. The three rangers, led by Trzaska, connected to the meeting via Zoom to be recognized.

In addition to the proclamation, Chester County will mark World Ranger Day by illuminating the Historic Courthouse in green on the evening of Wednesday, July 31.

Chester County’s park rangers are responsible for enforcement of park rules and regulations, natural resource management, emergency medical services, and general visitor services for the more than 1.5 million visitors to the county’s seven parks and three regional trails each year. They also provide more than 150 educational and volunteer programs on topics including local history, birding, native plant installation, fishing, archery, and kayaking.

For the first time, rangers from six counties in southeastern Pennsylvania and Maryland will gather at Warwick County Park on July 31 for a morning of partnership and community outreach. The public is invited to join them from 10 a.m. to noon for Touch a Truck opportunities with a variety of ranger vehicles, a children’s scavenger hunt, pop-up archery, and disc golf.

Rangers will be available to answer questions and talk about what it takes to be a park ranger. No registration is necessary for this free program.

For more information about the World Ranger Day program at Warwick County Park, visit www .chesco.org/parkprograms, and click on Ranger Talks under “Outdoor Recreation and Activities.”

The Village Library, 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown, will host an interactive STEM program for children and their families on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 10 a.m.

The program, presented by a national group called Science Heroes, uses stories to teach science. During the interactive 45-minute show, volunteers will help the performer conduct sci-

ence experiments about chemical reactions, the transfer of energy, physical explosions and the changing states of matter.

According to www.thescience heroes.com, the program is suitable for children ages 4 to 12 and their families. Contact the library for registration requirements at 610-286-1022 or smolibrary@ gmail.com.

Robin Church of Lancaster, keyboards, trumpet and vocals; and Paul Colombo of Honey Brook, guitar and vocals.

Colombo said audiences can expect to hear a variety of covers during the concert. Selections will include “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)” by Hall & Oates, “Rock Me” by Muddy Waters, “Moondance” by Van Morrison, “Sweet Dreams” by Eurythmics and “Rockin’ Chair” by Gwen McCrae.

“We are called the All Purpose

Band because we can do a lot of different types of work,” Colombo said, noting that his band recently performed for 500 to 600 people at the Fourth of July celebration at the Hershey Theatre. “At the Fourth of July show, we had people dancing. Because we are more experienced, we are more versatile, we can go from classic rock to dance to blues to jazz.”

Colombo, who previously performed in the Honey Brook Concert Series with The Fortunatos in 2022, said that the APB musicians have performed together previously, but they formed their own band just over a year ago. “The musician community is

very small,” he said, noting he has played with Santana and Hudson for over 10 years and he worked with Church in the pit band at the American Music Theatre in Lancaster from 1999 to 2001.

“When I first met Rose 10 years ago, she was a blues singer. We have expanded out of that into other stuff,” he noted. “I played with Robin in The Fortunatos. He plays in other bands in central PA, including Maxwell (Project), which is huge in Harrisburg. Dave is a member of the Lebanon County Music Hall of Fame.”

Colombo said that the APB is very motivated by the concertgoers and will play tunes depending on the audience’s interests. “What is good about this band is our experience. We are not tied into

one thing, and we can read a crowd and go in that (direction) if we need to,” said Colombo. “Plus, it’s my hometown, so I hope my friends will come.”

The concert series will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., with a performance by the Neo Trio, which performs jazz, rock, funk and blues. Concerts are free and open to the public, but attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for donation to the Honey Brook Food Pantry.

Honey Brook Borough Park is located at 71 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), Honey Brook. For more information, visit www.honeybrook borough.net, choose “Events” and then select “Concerts in the Park.” Those with questions may email jjenzano@hbboro.net.

Community service

MTBB maintains storage sheds at St. Mark’s where building materials and paint are stored for the various projects. St. Mark’s was also the location of one of the service projects this year. Volunteers installed refrigeration units outside the church, where people in need will now be able to obtain food items such as meat and fresh produce.

The church already has a food sharing box that offers nonperishable food.

“We are putting a structure up on the corner of the building for one refrigerator and one freezer so when we get donations of frozen foods or perishables, whether it be dairy, fruits or vegetables, we can put it in there,” explained volunteer and MTBB board member Richie Bowden.

Hopewell Love, a ministry that provides food, community dinners and other services, purchased the units that were installed at St. Mark’s. “They are outdoor units, so they are made a little differently; they don’t freeze in the winter,” Bowden stated. “They will be accessible. (They are) in a shed, but we are not going to put the doors on. It will never be locked.”

Bowden, who is also the MTBB site team chair, has been a part of the effort since it began in 2014 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Birdsboro. It began as an experimental ministry called Mission Trip Birdsboro and then grew and evolved into its own organization in 2022 and was rebranded as MTBB.

Bowden said the effort actually runs from November through late July. “This is all-consuming for leadership. We will have our first meeting in November for (the following) year,” said Bowden. “In January, we hit the ground running. In March, all the applications for assistance and volunteers open.”

He said a special effort was made this year to encourage students and young adults to volunteer as part of the new Youth Service Team. “It’s good for the youth. We desperately want to keep them involved - learning and developing into future leaders to keep (MTBB) going,” Bowden added.

On a personal level, Bowden is committed to vol-

unteer work with organizations like MTBB. “I’m retired; I work for God,” he stated. “I have been blessed to retire early, so I do as much as can for as many people as I can.”

In addition to completing the work projects, Wells reported that the volunteers make an effort to interact with the homeowners. “The purpose of MTBB goes beyond addressing physical needs of maintenance or repairs. It addresses isolation, loneliness and the spiritual care of individuals,” Wells commented. “Simple acts of labor often have deeper meaning to the recipient of care.”

He said that volunteering is a tangible way of showing God’s love in the community. “We have been taught to love our neighbors as ourselves,” Wells said. “Volunteers share their blessings through helping others.”

To learn more about the ministry and to view photos and videos from the work week, visit www.facebook .com/MissionTripBirdsboro.

will benefit the society and the upkeep of its building, which includes a local history museum with displays of local artifacts. The building is open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment. “Anyone can come in and check out our displays,” Styer said, noting that the building houses a library of history books and research books, obituaries and an archives room.

Museum displays are changed several times a year. “Currently on display are items the people have recently donated to our society - anything that pertains to the history of Caernarvon Township,” Styer said.

The Caernarvon Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the history of Caernarvon Township. The society

was first established in 1975 to restore the Caernarvon Presbyterian Chapel, built in 1843, for the bicentennial of the United States in 1976. The building is now the historical society’s headquarters.

In addition to Churchtown Day in August, the historical society hosts a Memorial Day celebration and offers history programs with local guest speakers. For more information, visit www.caernarvonlancaster.org/ community.
