MTBB celebrates 10 years of community service
BY FRANCINE FULTON
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond (MTBB), a ministry where community members volunteer to help local homeowners in need with repair projects. Workers also complete projects at public sites, including local parks.
For this year’s effort, more than 150 volunteers worked from July 18 to 22 at 48 homes in the area and on two community projects, including the community garden at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Birdsboro. The week culminated with a closing celebration held at Reading Country Club.
Each morning, the crews gathered at St. Mark’s, where church members prepared breakfast for the volunteers,

who then departed to the various work sites. They completed jobs such as painting, power washing, making roof repairs and landscaping, which included pulling weeds and mulching. Volunteers wore matching
all of the existing siding and replacing the bottom four feet of siding where there was flood damage,” explained volunteer Monica Block. “Today we are doing all the replacement work, and tomorrow we are painting all the wood at the bottom and the top and putting new stucco on the bottom.”

Chester County Connect Care
(CCCC), formerly known as Chester County Women’s Services, will hold its third annual Summer Picnic on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. The event will be held at a new location this year - West Brandywine Township Park. Admission to the family-friendly event is free.
Activities will include yard games, live music and food trucks, and there will be face painting and balloon animals for children. A petting zoo is also planned.
Scheduled to perform in the
park’s amphitheater are Bryar Bullock from Freedom Life (FL) Church in Christiana and his worship band, as well as youths from FL Kids, who will sing and dance.
Singer Erica Barnes will be featured, as well as Gabe Mahalik, who will perform comedy and rap. There will also be a drone demonstration by officer Richard Craig from the West Brandywine Township Police Department. The guest speaker will be Joe Knopp, executive producer of the movie “Unplanned.”
“We encourage people to bring blankets and chairs and stay for a while. We will have all entertainment
T-shirts that read, “Your Hand Is God’s Hand,” based on Proverbs 3:27. Additionally, a “God’s Hands at Work” sign was posted at each work site.

This is Block’s sixth year volunteering with MTBB. “I grew up in Birdsboro, and for me, it’s a way to give back,” she said. “The (homeowner) is a single mother, and I was raised by a single mother, so I knew what that was like growing up.”
The summer volunteer program started in 2014 as Mission Trip Birdsboro, a ministry of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Birdsboro.

Heritage Club seeks to preserve the history of Birdsboro
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Birdsboro-area residents interested in local history are invited to attend a meeting of the Birdsboro Heritage Club. The group meets on the first Saturday of the month at 9 a.m. at the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center (BCMC). The next scheduled meeting will be on Aug. 5, and the topic of discussion will be the Bird Mansion.
The group was founded by BCMC board president Todd Peterson, who established a “Birdsboro of Yesterday” Facebook page several
years ago where he and local residents share historical photos and videos from the area.
“We (meet monthly) to discuss the history of our town,” Peterson explained. “We choose a topic, and then I present something at the meeting. We have been getting about 10 to 12 people attending.”
Past meeting topics have included “The Great 1927 Birdsboro Post Office Robbery,” the schools of Birdsboro and the Birdsboro trolley, which once operated along a 7-mile stretch on what is now Route 724.

Concerts slated in Honey Brook
Drew Nielands and the John Grecia Band will be featured as part of the Honey Brook Borough Concerts in the Park series on Sunday, Aug. 6, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in Honey Brook Borough Park, 71 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), Honey Brook.
Grecia and Nielands, who hail from West Chester, are eclectic musicians who are inspired by classic rock ‘n’ roll, folk and soul music. The two are longtime friends and collaborators and have honed their sound over years of live performances and recordings.
In addition, the Concert in the Park featuring Sling Shot, which was canceled on July 16, has been rescheduled for Sunday, Aug. 27, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sling Shot will present “Rock and Soul Revival,” which will include classic rock, the rhythm and blues sounds of the 1960s and music from the 1980s.
Both concerts are free. In lieu of an admission fee, nonperishable food donations will be accepted for the Honey Brook Food Pantry. In the event of inclement weather, the decision to cancel will be made by 1 p.m. the day of the show. A cancellation message will be posted at www.honeybrookborough.net.
Heritage
the club has gathered photos and other memorabilia which are housed at the BCMC. “We have a Heritage Room at BCMC where we display historical items,” said Peterson. “The Heritage Room at the center is open during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the week. Anyone can stop in and view it.”
At the upcoming meeting, attendees will learn about the Bird Mansion, which was built by iron forger William Bird. It was completed in 1751.
According to a history of the building posted at www.facebook.com/ birdsboroofyesterday, when William Bird died in 1761, his iron work company was passed on to his son, Mark Bird, who later doubled the size of the two-and-a-half-story brownstone
mansion. In 1796, the mansion was sold to Matthew Brooke and his wife, Elizabeth, who purchased the Birdsboro Iron Works from the Bird family.
In the early part of the 20th century, a group of local businesspeople saw the need to establish a place where local youths could gather for recreational activities. In 1921, the E&G Brooke Land Company deeded the Bird Mansion for the sum of $1 to the BCMC and the Birdsboro YMCA. During the 1960s, the YMCA was disbanded, and the community, along with help from the United Way, was successful in keeping the BCMC open. Today, the center continues to offer a variety of programming for people of all ages.
“I love history and I love Birdsboro. I was born and raised here,”
Peterson said, noting that years ago, the borough of Birdsboro was divided into geographical sections, which included Texas, a small group of houses in south Birdsboro. “I grew up in south Birdsboro (Texas) on Bird Street, and my father was the ‘Texas Clipper’ barber.”
He added that the goal of the Birdsboro Heritage Club is to preserve the history of the area. “(I want to keep) our town’s history alive and well,” he said. “It is our past, and if we don’t preserve it and share it, it will fade away.”
The Birdsboro Community Memorial Center is located at 210 E. Main St., Birdsboro. For more information, visit www.bcmcbirdsboro.com/ birdsboro-heritage-club or the aforementioned Facebook page.

the community’s local needs,” said Stuart Wells, MTBB board member and vice chair of the promotion team. “It was decided to strive to model Christ’s love by offering struggling homeowners the gift of help and a no-cost work crew.”
In the first year, volunteers worked at four homes and two community projects. Currently, the ministry attracts more than 100 volunteers each year helping at more than 40 sites. “In our first decade we have grown tenfold. We now work at 10 times as many sites and have more than five times as many volunteer participants,” noted Wells.
As a result of the mission’s success and growth, the ministry
became known as Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond in January 2021, and it is a fully independent nonprofit organization.
Wells said that volunteers strive to serve as a visible example of Christian love in action. “Actions speak louder than words, and Christ teaches us to take action through faith, love, service to others, mercy, justice and forgiveness,” he stated. “The leadership of Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond looks forward to another 10 years of striving to model Jesus’ lessons of Christian love.”
