Legion Riders Construct Ramp For Local Veteran Birdsboro, when describing how volunteers constructed an access “This whole process from the ramp for a local veteran. “We were time we learned there was a need to supposed to be in the Berks County the day we built the ramp was only Memorial Firefighters Ride. We two weeks. We try to mobilize as decided not to go on the ride, and quickly as we can,” said Chris Swen- we would take care of this veteran. da, road captain for the American That’s our primary mission.” The ramp was built on July 31 at Legion Riders from Post 626 in the home of George Sterner of Birdsboro, who uses a walker. Previously, he had to navigate a set of stairs to leave his home, where he resides with his wife, Kim. Sterner is a combatwounded Vietnam veteran and a member of the American Legion Post 626 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 411, both of Birdsboro. Kim is a member of the auxiliary at both organizations. Swenda, who is a carpenter by trade and served with the U.S. Army, was co-project manager with Bob Volunteers who worked on ramp construcMealand. BY FRANCINE FULTON

n 2014, an experimental ministry called Mission Trip Birdsboro was founded at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC) in Birdsboro. Over the course of several days, about 30 church volunteers worked in the community by making improvements at local parks and completing repair work for four local homeowners. The purpose of the mission was to help those unable to care for their homes, including senior citizens and those with disabilities. The effort grew through the years and neighboring churches joined the effort along with sponsoring organizations. Today, the ministry is now known as Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond, a fully independent nonprofit organization. This year, from July 20 to 24, volunteers completed work for 40 homeowners and at three community locations, including the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center. A total of 143 volunteers took part in the effort, including 88 site workers. Other volunteers who did not perform physical labor helped by preparing meals for the worksite volunteers.

He noted that even though Mission Trip Birdsboro has evolved into Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond, the goal of program remains the same. “The change in organizational structure has not changed the core values of service to our community and to share the love and grace of God as taught by Christ,” said Wells. “While the participating churches and volunteers are from different denominations, common to all is the desire to live Christ’s teaching to love and serve others.” Wells also hopes that in the future the ministry might complete projects at several hundred homes during mission week. “At this rate, eight or nine years from now, could Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond be looking at 300 or 400 home projects?” he asked. “Unimaginable. Just as today would have been unimaginable in 2014. And yet here we are. I am thrilled by the prospects of where Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond can go from here.” To learn more about the ministry and to view photos and videos from the work week, visit www.mission tripbirdsboro.org or www.face book.com/MissionTripBirdsboro.

Despite record high temperatures and humidity, the volunteers completed painting projects, planted and weeded flower beds and pruned trees. Other projects included installing safety grab bars in the shower of a senior citizen, repairing a storm door, sanding and repairing stairs and porch railings and laying down a walkway. All the volunteers wore matching T-shirts, which read, “God’s Will: Our Heart” from Ephesians 6:6. A kickoff was held on July 17 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Birdsboro, and a closing celebration took place at St. Paul’s UCC in Amity on July 25. Volunteer Stuart Wells, a member of St. Paul’s UCC and one of the originators of the Mission Trip Birdsboro program, addressed the group during the event. “Look at what grew out (of) a handful of church members dreaming of a way to demonstrate the love of Christ outside the walls of a church building. None of us envisioned something so big with such vigorous growth,” he stated. “We set out in faith to make a small movement to demonstrate Christian love: to love our neighbors as ourselves and to serve others as Jesus taught.”

Grants Aid Land Preservation Efforts The Chester County commissioners recently approved the awarding of $3.2 million in open space preservation and park improvement grants. The grants are made available through Chester County’s Preservation Partnership Program, which offers funding to municipalities and nonprofit land preservation organizations. These county funds are anticipated to attract an additional $7 million of non-county funds, meaning more than $10 mil-

lion in total investment. A total of 20 grants are included this year, ranging from $11,000 to the Open Lands Conservancy of Chester County to help facilitate creation of a publicly accessible nature trail in Charlestown to $640,000 for a conservation easement on the 126-acre Camp Innabah property in East Vincent Township, protecting environmental resources and providing a future segment of the French Creek Trail.

astronomy presentations and children’s activities. The public will also be able to view the night sky through more than 20 amateur and high-powered telescopes. Admission and parking are free, but donations will be accepted. Because of the pandemic, StarFest was canceled in 2020 and 2021. “ We did virtual events, but this is our first live event since 2019,” said CAS member Robert Cordivari, who is event co-chair along with Mary Howe. “We’re very excited. We want people to know we are back live.” StarFest will open at 6 p.m. for solar observing and telescope setup. Attendees will also be able to meet the astronomers and check out their telescopes. Opening remarks will be offered at 7 p.m., after which children’s author Julia Kregenow will read from her book “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, I Know Exactly What You Are.”

Memorial Day weekend before advancing to Worlds. The competitors were divided into Copper 1, Copper 2, Bronze and Diamond teams. “It’s based on skill level,” explained Carla Perella, whose daughter, Jaida Hess, competes on the Copper 2 team. “Copper 1 is your developmental group. Copper 2 is more mature. Diamond is the highest level that Steel City participates in.” The following athletes competed at the event: Copper 1 Edie Tritz, Ellie Marion, Keegan Chidester and Olivia Neroz; Copper 2 - Braylee MacCombie, Mina Krieger, Gianna Lewis and Jaida Hess; Bronze - Kara Haven, Kaylee Brown, Kiara Buchanan, Ryleigh Long and Madeline Kruzek; and Diamond - Lauren King and Simone Wilford. Steel City’s Copper 1 team earned third place overall at the competition. Four events are scored: balance beam, uneven bars, floor exercise and vault. “Depending on the participants’ level, Copper 1, Copper 2, Bronze and even Diamond USAIGC levels (have) different difficulties,” Perella said. For all levels of gymnasts, USAIGC had an additional finals day where an individual gymnast could qualify for up to four events. Perella reported the majority of the gymnasts from Steel City qualified for at least one event in the finals. Two gymnasts from the Copper 1 team - Keegan Chidester and Olivia Neroz qualified for all four events. This is the first time in three years the World Championships

Mental Health Surveys Posted Chester County has joined with communities across the nation, introducing 988 as the direct phone connection support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress. Chester County sees the implementation of the new 988 call option as a first step toward a transformed crisis care system and is seeking feedback through two online surveys to better inform the county’s crisis care system. The surveys include a Youth

Mental Health Survey for parents/guardians, teachers, counselors, health professionals, and young people and an Adult Mental Health Survey for individuals who recently experienced the mental health crisis response system, as well as members of law enforcement, emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, homeless service providers, health professionals, and others. The Adult and Youth Mental Health surveys are brief,

anonymous, and available at www.chesco.org/mhidd. Once the survey results are concluded, they will be shared with a planning committee that includes representatives from the Chester County Department of Emergency Services, NAMI, Chester County first responder organizations, West Chester University, Main Line Health, and Chester County’s Departments of Health, Human Services, Community Develop-

ment, Mental Health/IDD, Probation Services, and Drug & Alcohol Services. The district attorney and CEOs of Chester County Hospital, Alliance for Health Equity, Phoenixville Community Health Foundation, and Chester County Intermediate Unit are also part of the planning committee, as well as peer recovery specialists and people with personal experience with the county’s current mental health system.

In addition to building the ramp, volunteers also completed yardwork at the location, weeding, cleaning out flower beds and trimming the hedges. “Kim and the ladies auxiliary from the VFW provided our lunch,” Swenda noted. Sterner interacted with the workers throughout the day as they constructed the ramp. “He was outside the whole time on the deck with his wife, and everyone had ample opportunity to chat with him,” said Swenda. “We never say the project is done until the person who lives there walks down the ramp.” The American Legion Riders are motorcycle enthusiasts who belong to the American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary or the Sons of the American Legion. “Bob Mealand, a member of both posts, as well as the former commander of the American Legion, was the person that brought (the need) to us,” said Swenda. “Bob took care of all the measurements, and I went back a second time to review everything and make sure we had everything we needed.” Twenty-two volunteers, which included Legion Riders and members of the VFW, constructed the 32foot ramp using pressuretreated lumber. “It will be stained sometime in the spring because it needs to dry because (we used) fresh lumber,” Swenda pointed out. This is the third ramp that the Riders have completed. The first was built in the fall of 2021 at the home of a disabled veteran in Fleetwood. “We also (built a ramp) in early December for an Army veteran’s wife and daughter that live in Gibraltar,” said Swenda. “We are getting the process down pretty well. (The most recent ramp project) took only three and half hours.”

Eviction Prevention Program To Receive Funds

Master Watershed Stewards Install Planters Penn State Extension Master Watershed Stewards installed six downspout planters across Chester and Delaware counties to teach residents about reducing stormwater runoff. Downspout planters are decorative landscaped planters specially designed to absorb and filter stormwater before it enters stormwater management or sewer systems. Roofs, and other impervious surfaces, do not allow fallen rain to soak into the ground. Instead, this rain runs over the surface as stormwater runoff, often collecting pollutants, eroding exposed soils, and potentially causing flooding and other

Based on this program’s success, in January 2021, Friends Association expanded its efforts to the two Magisterial District Courts serving the Coatesville area. The organization aims to add five more courts in the next year. To learn more about the EPC Program, visit www.friendsassoc.org. United Way of Chester County will invest $250,000 over a three-year period to expand Friends Association’s Eviction Prevention Court Program (EPC Program) countywide. The program provides a combination of free legal representation, financial assistance, and social service support to tenants who appear before the court for an eviction filing. The goal is to avoid the immediate and downstream consequences of eviction for tenants and the significant financial costs to landlords, taxpayers, and the community. Friends Association

The demonstration downspout planters in Chester County were planted at the Caln Township Municipal Building and the compost center buildings in Caln and West Bradford townships. In Delaware County, they were installed at the Environmental Center in Smedley Park and the Delaware County Conservation District in Rose Tree Park.
