The Chester County Adult Tutoring Program is seeking volunteers willing to give their time to help adults who are working on their English language, reading, writing and math skills and more. According to Mimi Burstein, assistant coordinator, the program is a partnership between the Chester County Library and Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Coatesville. The OIC serves Chester County residents by providing free adult basic literacy education, life skills and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs that are designed to prepare individuals for employment and economic self-sufficiency. The OIC is funded entirely by grants and fundraising dollars. In addition to receiving assistance with language skills, students in the Adult Tutoring

Program may be looking for help with test preparation, including the high school equivalency diploma, the GED (General Education Diploma); TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) for those interested in nursing; and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), which measures the English language ability of non-native speakers who want to enroll in English-speaking universities. The Adult Tutoring Program office is located within the Chester County Library, 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton, where many of the students and tutors can be found working together. “You’ll find pairs working at other public libraries in the county as well,” Burstein said. Students’ skills are tested when entering the program, and they are asked what goals they have. All the information is given to the tutors before they meet the students. Tutors and students are then matched

based on times available, preferred location and the tutors’ preference for level of student. The Adult Tutoring Program has been operating for more than 20 years. “(The program) strives to match students with tutors who are motivated to develop individualized approaches for their student,” said Burstein. She cited the case of Laura Jenkins, a tutor who has been with the program for more than five years and has worked with several ESL students. “(Laura) is currently working with Chin Wei Huang, a woman from Taiwan who recently passed her citizenship test. Chin Wei’s main focus now is on improving her conversational abilities,” Burstein explained. “A skilled baker and cake decorator, she is now starting a home-based business, and Laura is working with her on the vocabulary and topics specific to her needs as a budding entrepreneur.” Jenkins noted that tutoring ESL students is a learning ex perience for her as well, allowing her to “see our language and culture through the eyes of others.” Tutors and students are asked to make a commitment to work together for one year, meeting for 12 hours a month. No previous teaching experience is necessary, although tutors are required by state funders to have a four-year college degree. Online training for tutors is

provided through the Pennsylvania Department of Education and can be completed at home at the tutor’s convenience before tutoring begins. The Chester County Library also has a collection of texts and study guides available for tutors and students for extended borrowing periods to support a wide range of educational goals. “(We) encourage anyone who is interested in, or even just intrigued by, the possibility of volunteering as a tutor to learn more by calling or visiting,” Burstein added. For more information or to make an appointment, readers may call 610-280-2605 or 610280-2618 or email Debbie Rikess, Adult Tutoring Program coordinator, at drikess@cc-oic.org. Walk-ins are also welcome when office personnel are available. Visitors should let the reference librarian know that they would like more information about tutoring, and they will be directed to the OIC Adult Tutoring Program office. Pictured on front: Laura Jenkins (right), a volunteer tutor with the Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), leads a tutoring session at the Chester County Library in Exton with student Chin Wei Huang, who is from Taiwan. The OIC is currently seeking additional tutors for adult learners throughout Chester County.

Recruitment Campaign from pg 1 Brandywine began by working with representatives from The Communication Solutions Group, the public relations and marketing agency hired by the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association to facilitate the project. Students started developing a brand and tagline specifically to attract high school volunteers. They settled on “The desire to serve. The courage to act. Volunteer today. HelpFightFire.com.” Then, students were asked to create recruitment posters incorporating the new branded logo that would eventually hang in the hallways of schools across the county. Student submitted their concepts and had time to revise them based on the feedback they received. The top three designs were then submitted for final review to the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association, before a winning design was selected. This past spring, the recruitment project moved to teacher Sean Hicks’ digital media and sound communications class at TCHS Pickering. Hicks’ students were tasked with editing together footage and photos of Chester County junior volunteer firefighters at a training session. Students assembled two one-

CCCF Awards Grants, Scholarships minute public service announcements, which included the branded logo and tagline. To view the videos, readers may visit www.tinyurl.com/yyb5z6e2 and www.tinyurl.com/yyv7qlap. The recruitment poster and two PSAs have since been distributed to Chester County high schools, along with an editorial piece highlighting the importance and benefits of becoming a junior volunteer firefighter. Chester County high school students will have a chance see these finished products when school starts again in the fall. The hope is that students across Chester County will be inspired by the work done by their classmates and take action to become junior volunteer firefighters themselves. To become a volunteer firefighter or for more information, individuals may visit www.HelpFightFire.com.

Students in teacher Troy Campbell’s commercial and graphic arts class at Technical College High School Brandywine Campus helped the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association to create a campaign to attract junior volunteer firefighters.

Last school year, the Chester County Intermediate Unit’s Technical College High School (TCHS) students created a new advertising campaign to convince their classmates to join their local Chester County fire station as junior volunteer firefighters. This fall, the fruits of their labor will finally be on display. As part of its ongoing www.HelpFightFire.com volunteer recruitment campaign, the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association began collaborating with TCHS Brandywine Campus and TCHS Pickering Campus in September 2018. The goal of the project was for students to help develop marketing materials specifically focused on recruiting high school students across the county to become volunteer junior firefighters. Students created a branded logo and tagline, along with recruitment posters, and they edited together two one-minute public service announcements focusing on the need for junior volunteer firefighters and the benefits of serving the community in this way. The event also showcased the future expansion plans for the museum, which is housed in an 1873 building that once served as a carriage and wagon works. The old forge and freight elevator can still be seen in the building. “The plan is to double the amount of display areas with a $1.2 million expansion that would add galleries, a garaged entry space for vehicles and a 100-plus-seat auditorium for special events, speakers, films and veterans groups to meet,” explained Rep. Mark Gillen, museum president. “The existing 1873 carriage and wagon works portion would be connected to the addition. The plan includes an elevator to bring visitors to all portions of the building conveniently. “ We would like to break ground in 2020,” he added. The museum is open every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; other hours are available by appointment. Gillen is present during operating hours to greet guests. Admission is free.

Items on display in the museum have been donated or are on loan. Exhibits are changed on a regular basis. One of the displays features a handmade model B-29 aircraft, the type of plane that was flown by United States pilots during World War II. Upstairs in the museum, visitors can view a detailed model railroad display featuring scenes depicting World War II. The display was created by the Veterans Association of the Heritage of Green Hills. A section of the railway that ran under the World Trade Center and was damaged during the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks is featured at the entrance to the museum as part of a memorial to those who lost their lives that day. The building also includes a display spotlighting women veterans and a room that can be used for meetings by veterans groups. For more information about the museum, readers may visit https://berksmilitary.weebly.com or www.facebook.com/berks military.

provide a short history of CAS and StarFest and discuss the work of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Lighting Council. Speaker presentations will take place from 7:30 to 9:15 p.m. “You Are Here,” an overview of the size and scale of the universe and how amateur astronomers view the objects within it, will be presented by longtime CAS member Robert Cordivari at 7:30 p.m. The keynote speaker will be James Aguirre, an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, who will discuss how radio waves are used to study the universe. His talk will begin at 8:15 p.m. All attendees will be given free tickets to win door prizes, such as small telescopes and binoculars, which will be given out throughout the evening. The grand prize of a high-powered telescope will be awarded at approximately 9:15 p.m. Public stargazing will begin at 9:30 p.m. “The highlight of the evening will be 10 Object Row; 10 of our members’ telescopes will be focused on a different deep-sky object,” said Cordivari, who is event co-chair along with Mary Howe. “You can see anything from a planet and a star cluster to a globular cluster, a double star and a supernova remnant. The public can go down the row and see the objects visible through amateur telescopes. It’s a really good way for the public to get a diverse view of the objects we look at all the time.” He added that there will also be video streaming of deep-sky objects. CAS is a nonprofit amateur astronomy club devoted to raising awareness of astronomy and to educating the general public about light pollution and preserving the night sky. CAS meets monthly on the Sunday nearest the full moon starting at 7 p.m. at the Crow’s Nest Preserve in Elverson. Specific meeting dates are listed at www.chesmont astro.org. StarFest is the club’s biggest endeavor each year. “It is an outreach event. It’s not a fundraiser, but we do accept donations to offset the cost of the event,” Cordivari noted. Since a limited number of chairs will be available, attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating during the speaker presentations. A food vendor will be on-site. The rain/cloud date for StarFest 2019 is Sunday, Aug. 25. The tentative backup date for the event will be Saturday, Aug. 31, with a rain/cloud date of Sunday, Sept. 1. Cordivari hopes that the event will be a success, noting that last year’s event was rained out. “We were 0-4 last year,” he said. “We are hoping for clear skies this year.” For more information, readers may visit the club’s website or search for “Chesmont Astronomical Society observing+” on Facebook. Cancellation information will be posted on the website and the Facebook page.

Instead of using the dish to get HBO, I will show that you can take a picture of what radio waves look like.” He noted that the images will be projected onto a screen. Radio telescopes, which range in size, collect radio signals from space and focus them on an antenna. The radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, at 1,000 feet across, is the second-largest radio telescope in the world, behind only a radio telescope in China. Another example, the Robert C. Several years ago, Aguirre built a fully functional radio telescope with local high school students as part of Penn’s Summer Science Academy Program. At the Experimental Physics Research Academy, Aguirre helped the students turn a decommissioned TV satellite dish on the roof of The Enterprise Center in West Philadelphia into a 30-foot radio telescope, dubbed the Philadelphia Community Radio Telescope. “The old satellite dish was on top of The Enterprise Center at 46th and Market streets, which used to be WHYY in the ’80s and the

Glen Moore United Methodist Church (UMC) celebrated Heritage Sunday on July 28. The event was a look back over the 146 years since the cornerstone of the building was laid. The church is part of the historic district of the Village of Glenmoore, once known as Moorestown. On Heritage Sunday, a number of historic items were displayed in the community room, including lectionary Bibles from the past century, hymnals from as early as 1900, membership rolls, and a photo book of items donated over the years by various members. At a meeting of the board of trustees of the Springton Methodist Episcopal Church held on May 10, 1871, the president pro tempore, J.S. Parker, stated that the business at hand was to purchase a site for a new church building. A plot of three and one-half acres belonging to Lucien Hoguett was purchased. The building’s cornerstone was laid on July 25, 1873, and the building was dedicated on Dec. 28, 1873. Current members include families whose ancestors were members of the original congregation. The history of Methodism in the United States dates back to the mid-18th century with the ministries of early Methodist preachers, among them Robert Strawbridge. Following the American Revolution, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, sent Thomas Coke to the U.S., where he and Francis Asbury founded the Methodist Episcopal Church. In the early 20th century, many of the splintered Methodist

groups joined together to form the Methodist Church (USA). In 1968, the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren to form the United Methodist Church. The Glen Moore cemetery is a lesson in history with gravestones noting participation of the deceased in the Union Army during the Civil War and in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Family plots date back to the 1870s. A memorial garden for interment of cremains was dedicated in June. The Veterans Memorial Garden on the front lawn of the church also preserves the memory of members who served their country. The church office frequently gets calls from people who have tracked their ancestry back to the site and who are seeking information from cemetery sexton John Miller. The history of the church’s stained glass windows was also documented with explanations of the meaning of each of the symbols in the windows. A collection of church memorabilia is on file at the Wallace Township Historical Society. Glen Moore UMC is located at 1920 Creek Road, Glenmoore. For more information, readers may call 610-269-1545 or visit www.glenmooreumc.org. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has marked the 30th anniversary of its Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) program, where volunteers “adopt” a highway to collect litter. The program currently has more than 4,900 participating groups, more than 100,000 volunteers, and more than 10,000 miles of adopted statemaintained roadways. Building upon the Adopt-AHighway program, PennDOT offers volunteers the opportunity to add landscaping to their litter collection efforts by way of the Adopt and Beautify program. Through Adopt and Beautify, volunteers expand upon PennDOT’s planting efforts to cultivate approved plantings and conduct litter pickup along statemaintained roadways under a twoyear commitment. In return, PennDOT places a sign recognizing the group for its efforts. Interchange areas and traffic islands are also available for adoption. As an enhancement to Adopt and Beautify, PennDOT has developed a Pollinator Habitat Plan that will create naturalized gardens and meadows planted with pollinatorfriendly plant species at designated sites in partnership with public and private organizations. The gardens can be planted and maintained at a PennDOT-designated pollinator habitat site within the department’s right-of-way property, including at county facilities, interstate rest stops, or approved interchange areas or traffic islands. Individuals or groups such as clubs, schools, churches, businesses, and families may apply to adopt gardens for two-year timeframes. In return for their participation, PennDOT posts signs near the garden giving the volunteers credit for their efforts. More information on PennDOT’s roadside beautification efforts can be found at www.PennDOT.gov.

Arthur Hall Insurance recently presented a $3,000 check to the Arc of Chester County as part of the 2019 Chubb Charity Challenge. The Chubb Charity Challenge is an annual golf tournament, now in its 20th year, aimed at raising funds for local charities across North America. Agents, brokers, and clients form teams and play in local tournaments organized by Chubb’s nearby branch offices. Each team plays on behalf of a local charity of the team’s choosing. The winning team in each regional tournament is invited to play in the finals tournament during the fall for a chance to win up to $50,000 in donations for the team’s chosen charity. Arthur Hall Insurance’s Dan Mackarevich and Bob Hackett teamed up with Rob Brown and Ryan Moyer of MVP Capital in early July to play on behalf of the Arc of Chester County. The Arthur Hall Insurance/MVP Capital team finished in second place in the field of 13 other groups.

Giant Launches Product Line For Children Giant Food Stores has announced the launch of a new private brand product line for children. Nature’s Promise Kids is an extension of the current Nature’s Promise line of “free-from” products, which includes many organic options. Select items are already in stores, with more launching over the next year at all 181 Giant, Martin’s Food Markets and Giant Heirloom Market stores. The new line builds on Nature’s Promise, a line of plant-based food products that contain only nonGMO ingredients, and many items are certified organic. The Nature’s Promise Kids line, designed for children age 4 and up, features products designed to be nutritionally equivalent or better than similar traditional products. Nature’s Promise Kids products do not include any synthetic colors, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, sweeteners, MSG or highfructose corn syrup. In addition, Nature’s Promise Kids products contain no more than 500 mg of added sodium per serving; no more than 40% of calories from added sugar; no more than 10% of calories from saturated fat, except for nut, meat, poultry and dairy products; and one or more vitamins and/or minerals at 10% daily value or higher, if relevant to product category. The first two items to hit store shelves are Nature’s Promise Kids Sparkling Seltzer Water and Nature’s Promise Kids Squeezable Fruit Pouches. Giant will introduce additional Nature’s Promise Kids products, including apple slices, fruit snacks, cereal and more, over the next several months. Giant has committed to removing all synthetic colors, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, sweeteners, MSG and high-fructose corn syrup from all private brand products by 2025.
