Angel Flight East Seeks Volunteer Pilots By Francine Fulton
Angel Flight East (AFE), a nonprofit organization that offers air transportation to children and adults in need of medical treatment far from home, is seeking the services of local pilots. As part of the service it provides, AFE, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, utilizes volunteer pilots who use their own aircraft and pay for all expenses of the flight. Although AFE’s office is located in Blue Bell, its services cover a 14-state territory from Virginia to Ohio to Maine. Local pilots are part of the AFE organization. “We have 13 pilots based at Brandywine Airport in Coatesville,” noted Jess Ames, AFE programs and events coordinator. Other volunteer pilots are based out of Brandywine Airport in West Chester; Heritage Field Airport, formerly known as the
Pottstown-Limerick Airport; and Reading Regional Airport. “A lot of the pilot recruitment is by word of mouth, but we do outreach to smaller airports and post flyers to get new pilots signed up,” she added. Interested pilots are invited to complete an application at www.angelflighteast.org. “They are required to have 300 log hours of flight time and an IFR (Instrument Flight Rating) and have access to a plane with four seats,” Ames explained. “There are some retired pilots, but the majority of them have full-time jobs. They will arrange their schedule to fly a flight with us. Some of our pilots are in clubs (that own a plane).” She pointed out that pilots may also use rented planes to make the flights. “We have a flight coordination system,” Ames explained. “Pilots can log on anytime and see a list of available See Angel Flight East pg 3

New Holland Summer Arts P r o g r a m (NHSAP) secretary/treasurer Sue Noll recently mused on the success of the summer of 2018 program, which brought a number of returning and new musical acts to the New Holland Area Community Park on East Jackson Street on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. “We have had good attendance,” noted Noll. “The summer shows average (attendance of) 300, and for the Servant Stage (performance of ‘I’ll Fly Away’), we estimated 1,500 See Fiddler’s Picnic pg 8
“The most friendly and welcoming people you will ever meet” is how the Brandywine Valley Ski Association (BVSA) describes its members in a promotional brochure for the nonprofit organization, which meets year-round to enjoy a variety of outdoor sports

The BVSA will hold an open house for new and prospective members on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. at the Brickside Grille in Eagleview, located at 540 Wellington Square, Exton. 1,000 miles. “Our planes are smaller, so they can’t fly as far as a commercial flight, Ames noted. “We try to help as best as we can. If someone is outside our territory, we refer them to other volunteer pilot organizations. Ames pointed out that AFE also provides compassionate flights that allow people to visit with their loved ones who are patients at hospitals that are not close to their homes. “We try to get people to medical treatments, as well as keep families together, she said. “Parents can fly up and back to see their children. She added that the flights are weather dependent. “In the winter, we have to battle with the weather. These flights are never
100 percent guaranteed, Ames noted. “We ask that passengers have a backup mode of transportation or reschedule their appointments. She credits the pilots for the success of the organization, which schedules around 850 flights each year. “They are the core of what we do. Without them, we would not exist, she said. “Pilots say they do it because it gives them a reason to fly. It is the perfect pairing they get to do what they love as well as help somebody in need. For more information about Angel Flight East, readers may visit the website, call 215-358-1900 or visit www.face book.com/AngelFlightEast.

The Chester County 4-H Dairy Goat Show was held on Aug. 6 at the Romano 4-H Center of Chester County in Honey Brook during the week of the 4-H Fair. A total of 41 goat projects were exhibited by 19 4-H youth participants. This year the show was divided into three classes - Alpine Dairy Goats, Oberhasli Dairy Goats and Pet Goats. A separate market goat show was held, and market goats were sold as part of the annual 4-H livestock auction on Aug. 8. Kyle Miller of Newport was in charge of placing the goats and instructing the 4-H participants in how to improve their animals for show. In the Alpine breed, Frank Reith of West Grove captured the Grand Champion award for his 5-year-old doe, Reith Bros. Dixie. He also earned Reserve Grand Champion with his 2-year-old doe, Reith Bros. Harmonica. Frank’s dry yearling, Jasmine, was Junior Champion. Skylar Jackson of Landenberg was the Reserve Junior Champion with Aristos’ Kahlua, her 5-month-old kid. In the American Oberhasli breed, 3-year-old doe Sparkling Acres Springtime Jaz, owned by Micah Johnson of Glen Mills, was named Senior Champion and Grand Champion. Melissa Johnson of Glen Mills took home Reserve Champion with her doe, Sparkling Acres Georgia Breeze, as well as Reserve Junior Champion with her under-5month-old kid, Sparkling Acres Kansas Breeze. Nathan Rockwell of Woodlyn won Junior Champion honors with his kid, Kellina. The Pet Goat division included 12 entries. Mermaid, a Boar-type pet goat owned by Ellie Harrop of Chester Springs, was the Grand Champion, and Oreo, an 11-year-old pygmy dwarf goat owned by Aaron Phillips of Elverson, was the Reserve Champion. Frank’s Grand Champion Alpine doe, Dixie, was selected for Best in Show honors. In the Fitting and Showing competition, Frank was both the Champion Showman and Champion Fitter for the senior division. Melissa Johnson was the top intermediate showman and fitter. Xavier Reith of West Grove was the top showman and fitter in the junior division. Gianna Emmons of Newtown Square was the top first-year showman and fitter. Another highlight of the day was watching five Cloverbud goat participants. The event was open to youths between the ages of
5 and 8, who had the opportunity to enter the show ring with their animals. They all went home with Cloverbud Achievement Ribbons. The Chester County 4-H Dairy Goat show was one of the many shows that took place during the Chester County 4-H Fair, held Aug. 6 to 11. 4-H is open to all youths ages 5 to 18. For more information about the 4-H program in Chester County,
readers may contact the Penn State Extension office at 610-696-3500. Pictured on front: Frank
Reith of West Grove, who won outstanding Grand Champion honors with his Alpine doe, Dixie, during the Dairy Goat Show at the recent 4-H Fair, was also selected for Best in Show honors, along with other awards.

Fish can provide a host of flavors and make for a healthy addition to one’s diet. Alaskan cod, for example, is easy to find and, because it is high in certain omega-3 fatty acids, packs quite a heart-healthy punch. In fact, the U.S. Department of Agriculture notes that wild Alaskan cod contains the same levels of the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, as salmon. Men and women who want to improve their diets but not sacrifice flavor can try the recipe for Roasted Wild Alaskan Black Cod with Kambu Dashi, Kale and Sage, courtesy of Jill Lightner’s “Edible Seattle: The Cookbook” (Sterling Epicure).

A Sportsman’s Event/Freedom Dinner, featuring dinner, silent and live auctions, prize giveaways and games, will be presented by Chester County Backyard Bucks on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Wagontown Fire Company, 412 W. Kings Highway (Route 340). The event is open to people of all ages, including both hunters and non-hunters alike. Doors will open at 4 p.m. for a social hour, and there will be hors d’oeuvres and games. The silent auction will also be open, offering items such as naturerelated artwork, fishing trips, hunting trips, coolers and handmade fishing rods. A catered dinner will start at 6 p.m. Menu items will include pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw, cornbread and baked ziti. Winners of the silent auction items will be announced after dinner. There will be a table of prizes geared toward women, featuring jewelry and Amishmade crafts, that people may enter to win, as well as a special prize drawing for veterans in attendance. “We will recognize the veterans (in attendance) and honor them,” said Art Lyle of Oxford, one of the event organizers. A live auction will conclude the event. Live auction items will include artwork, home décor and collectibles. “We will also (award) a hunting trip to Ohio this year that
has been provided by one of our outfitters,” Lyle pointed out. The winner of the trip, a deserving family that was chosen by the chapter members, will be announced during the dinner. Those who make a set monetary donation or bring three nonperishable food items to the event will receive a free ticket to be entered into a drawing to win a muzzleloader. The monetary and food donations will be given to local food cupboards. Backyard Bucks is the Chester County chapter of Whitetails Unlimited (WTU), which has close to 500 chapters in the U.S. Proceeds from the event will be used by the local chapter for projects such as youth programs and conservation and preservation efforts. Every summer, the chapter sponsors an archery program at the Chester County Conservation Camp held at Paradise Farms in Downingtown, supplying the bows, arrows and targets. “The event this year was in July, and we had more than 40 kids attend,” Lyle said. “We teach them archery and archery safety, and they shoot at targets. Basically, it’s a beginner’s archery class.” The club also sponsors youths to attend the camp each summer. A portion of the proceeds from the Sportsman’s Event will be donated to the One Wish Foundation, a nonprofit organization that raises money to take children who have social or medical conditions and their families

Roasted Wild Alaskan Black Cod with Kambu Dashi, Kale and Sage (Serves 4) 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons kosher salt 5 dried porcini mushrooms 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced 2 cloves garlic, smashed 2 inches peeled fresh ginger, thinly sliced 1 stalk celery, thinly sliced 2 bay leaves 3 lbs. fish bones and scraps
4 sheets dry kombu or 1 pound fresh Pacific kelp 1/2 cup dry white wine 4 6-ounce Wild Alaskan Black Cod fillets 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon finely chopped shallots 1 leek, roughly chopped 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 cup stemmed, thinly sliced kale 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage Instructions: 1. In a spice or coffee grinder, grind 1 tablespoon of the salt and the porcini mushrooms together until very fine (roughly 1 minute); then sift the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve. Cover and set aside. 2. Heat the olive oil in a large soup pot over medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic, ginger, celery, bay leaves, and 1 teaspoon salt and cook until the vegetables are fragrant and sweating, about 5 minutes. Add the fish bones and scraps, kombu, and wine and simmer for 10 minutes. Add 3 quarts water and simmer slowly over medium heat for 1 1/4 hours, skimming off any impurities, gray matter, and excess ingredients that float to the surface of the broth. Strain the
broth through a fine-mesh strainer, discard the solids and simmer the broth again for 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and keep warm. 3. Preheat the oven to 185 F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Place the cod fillets on the pan and season liberally with the porcini salt. Place the pan in the oven for 38 minutes. 4. While the fish is baking, place a sauté pan over medium heat and add the butter, shallots, leek, and remaining 1 tsp salt. Sauté until tender but not browned. If the vegetables start to brown, add a couple of tablespoons of the broth. When the leek is tender, add the kale and sage and sauté until the kale is soft. 5. Divide the kale among 4 serving bowls. Using a spatula, place the black cod on the kale, pour the broth on and around the fish, and serve.

Chester County’s website, www.chesco.org, received a top statewide honor, with the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) bestowing the Excellence in Website Design Award as part of its 2018 Excellence in Website Awards. The award, for a website in a first- to third-class county, was recently presented to Chester County representatives at the CCAP annual conference in Gettysburg. In presenting the award, CCAP’s first vice president, Kathi Cozzone, pointed out Chester County’s website design, its up-to-date content, and its user-friendly navigation as some of the reasons for the award. The judging panel noted website enhancements that led to accessible, modern designs with increased functionality, the highlighting of county services, and greater transparency to improve residents’ interactions with county government. Chester County’s website receives an average of 110,000 site visits every month and provides information on all county services, including how to obtain a passport, paying taxes online, juror login, emergency preparedness information, and details on health clinics. Recent features added to the website are WebCAD, a webbased incident monitoring system that allows visitors to view real-time fire, emergency medical, and traffic incidents in Chester County; the Pipeline Information Center; a new online reservation system for parks education programs, camping, and pavilion rentals; and WalkWorks ChesCo! The WalkWorks program encourages residents to sign up and track their steps toward the county’s goal to walk 5 billion steps by the end of this year.

the park stage. The performance schedule allows a 30-minute spot for a group and 15 minutes for a single act or a duo. Usually up to 15 acts perform each year, and the picnic is often a place for musicians to join up to make music together. Musicians who are considering playing on stage together will sometimes gather in spots far from the stage to practice and often draw a crowd to their own little mini concert. In addition to string players, individuals who play accordion, harmonica, and keyboard may visit the park to join in on wellknown favorites such as “Rocky Top,” “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” “Orange Blossom Special,” and “Golden Slippers.” Organizers plan to have a square dance caller on-site for this year’s event. Country and bluegrass tunes are staples of the event, according to Noll. The picnic portion of the event is supplied by the New Holland Lions Club, which brings
its food trailer and offers items for purchase, including hot ham sandwiches, barbecued chicken, chicken corn soup, hot dogs with chili or sauerkraut, side dishes, various desserts, cold beverages, and coffee. Members of the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) marching band will help the Lions in the trailer. In return, the Lions will make a donation to the GSHS Marching Band Booster Club. A queen-size quilt, donated by Witmer’s Quilt Shop, will be on display. This will be the last year that the shop will donate a quilt because the enterprise is closing. Noll expressed gratitude to the owner for donating a quilt each year for many years in support of NHSAP. The donated quilt for this year bears an Indian Wedding Ring pattern and was created in shades of brown and teal. It will be given away around
6:30 p.m., according to Noll. NHSAP is an all-volunteer organization that has existed in New Holland for more than three decades. “We can always take more volunteers,” said Noll, who noted that help is needed with setting up prior to concerts and clearing the park afterwards. Volunteers to accept freewill offerings during intermission are also needed. No admission will be charged for the Fiddler’s Picnic, but freewill offerings will be received throughout the day. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Readers who would like more information about the Fiddler’s Picnic or the Summer Arts Program may visit www.new hollandsummerarts.com, search for “New Holland Summer Arts Association” on Facebook, or email newhollandsummerarts assoc@gmail.com.
Group Posts Back-To-School Car Care Tips Back-to-school season is quickly approaching, which means family vehicles will start working overtime. The Car Care Council has released tips to help families get their vehicles ready for car pools, playdates, soccer games and more this fall. The organization urges families to perform a five-point checkup before the start of the school year. Vehicle owners should check the lights and windshield wipers for better visibility, perform a complete brake inspection, check the tires for underinflation or
excessive wear, make sure seat belts and car seats are fitted and positioned properly, and consider installing a back-up detection device. These tips are discussed in a new video that may be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga W4Q7yt1QY. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the Be Car Care Aware consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For more information, readers may visit www.carcare.org.

BVSA from pg 1 members participate in, such as skiing, cycling, hiking, golfing, pool parties and kayaking, as well as planned trips in 2019 to Ireland, Montana and Switzerland. “There will be some folks (at the open house) talking about future trips,” said Tim Noonan, a member of the activities committee. “(Visitors will also hear) reports on some of the things we’ve done recently and future events like horseback riding in October, a bonfire in November and the holiday party.” The event will also include drawings for free memberships for new members only and a display of photos of past events and trips. BVSA members come from throughout Chester County, as well as Wilmington, Del.; Lancaster and Berks counties; and King of Prussia in Montgomery County. “Established in 1975, we’ve changed (meeting places) over the years,” said Noonan. “ We met at the Elks Club in West Chester. When I joined,
we met (at a restaurant) in Downingtown.” He said the club has evolved since he became a member nearly 30 years ago. “In 1975, it was a group of 30-somethings who did a few bus trips to Vermont to ski,” he noted. “(Since then) the club has grown to nearly 200 members of all ages.” Noonan’s personal experiences with the club have included rafting through the Grand Canyon and sky diving. “I have been on safari and did a ‘Bike and Barge’ tour in the Netherlands,” Noonan noted. “I learned to sail through the club and become a better skier.” BVSA members are asked to pay an annual fee, with separate prices for couples, families and individuals. Members receive a monthly newsletter that lists club activities as well as reciprocal membership to the Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council and the National Ski Council. “If the King of Prussia club is going to a destination and we are not, you can
go with them,” Noonan noted. “BVSA is just one chapter of the broader Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council, which includes 38 clubs throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. There are thousands of people involved in it.” Although the BVSA promotes the sport of skiing, club members are invited to suggest other outings and trip destinations. “ Whatever interests people, that’s what we (offer),” Noonan added. BVSA meets the first Wednesday of each month from September through May at the Brickside Grille. Guests are always welcome. For additional information, readers may contact Noonan at 484-6808435 or Tim.Noonan@Fox Roach.com. More information is also available at www.bvsa.wild apricot.org.

“I love the show. It’s like a new show for me every year when I go,” remarked Hobday. “This is our 31st anniversary, and that’s just unbelievable to me.” Hobday and other organizers are also celebrating the fact that Heart of Lancaster has once again been named one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country by a magazine for crafters. “We’ve had really good attendance and quality vendors. They have a thousand other shows they could go to, but they choose us,” Hobday reflected. “It’s all about the community. It’s free, and we love that everybody can come and enjoy it.” Each year, a local charity is chosen to receive donations from the event. A donation box will be set up for those interested in donating toward this year’s nonprofit organization, the Columbia Animal Shelter. The shelter was the dream of the late Judy McKonly, who passed away in 2017. Her family has set out to fulfill that dream and McKonly’s wish to save the lives of at-risk animals. His love of nature is reflected in his landscape photography. Another important factor in planning the show for Hobday is having artwork at a variety of price points available for patrons - many of whom have been attending since the show first began. In addition to perusing quality arts and crafts, attendees may purchase a variety of food and enjoy live music by Over Easy, a Lancaster-area trio specializing in light pop favorites. For Marilyn Hobday, founder and chairperson of the Heart of Lancaster Art and Craft Show, ensuring that each of the artists makes his or her own work is crucial. Each applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. Many of the 200 exhibitors are from the local area, with others traveling from all along the East Coast. Forty-five of the juried artists are brand new to the 2018 show. Fifty artists will be demonstrating how their items are made, such as newcomer Topaz Martofel, who uses balloons to create entire unique structures and rooms. Basket weaver Joan Betzold and photographer Keith Grebinger have been selected as this year’s featured artists and will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the show ’s information booth in aisle one. In the next few weeks, students will head back to class. Motorists, parents, and children are encouraged to refresh their memories about how to share the road safely with school buses and other school transportation vehicles. Pennsylvania law requires motorists stop at least 10 feet away from school buses when their red lights are flashing and their stop arm is extended.
Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm is withdrawn. Drivers should not proceed until all the children have reached a place of safety. ESL Classes from pg 11 those who want to improve their pronunciation skills. The classes will be taught by congregation members who have taken part in a training program. “Right now, we have six teachers; we are all volunteers,” said church member Cathy Bryan, program director. Upon registration, students will be placed in the various classes
based on their abilities. “Each student takes part in an evaluation, which asks questions based on pictures and English grammar,” Bryan explained. “One of us will grade it and determine what level they are going into.” During last year’s session, students were from various countries, including Mexico, India, Sri Lanka and Honduras. “Some

(students) speak well but (have difficulties) reading and writing and vice versa,” Bryan explained. “Some of them already (understand) English but want to learn from the ground up. Sometimes people want conversation (skills).” She said that rooms in the church will be set up as classrooms and that teachers use props, handouts and games to help the students learn basic grammar. Conversation will also be encouraged. For example, one past lesson featured a theme of dangerous situations. “We brought pictures of a barking dog and live electrical wires from a power pole
coming down,” said Bryan. “That got them started talking. “There is also a word bingo game,” she added. “They hear the word and have to find it on their cards.” Each session also will feature a time for reading. “They read aloud if they can, and we check comprehension. We ask questions based on what they read,” Bryan noted. The evening will also include a devotional, during which students will be invited to read and talk about a verse from the Bible. Each session will include a break between 7:30 and 7:40 p.m. Free light snacks and beverages will be
provided. Bryan said that while a majority of the students in the last session were from Coatesville, the classes are free and open to anyone. “Last year we had a graduation ceremony, and we will do that again this year,” she added. “We have a church picnic in June, and (all the students) will be invited.” For more information about the classes, readers may call 610-466-7640 or email ESL@olivestreetpres.org. Children’s Eye Health Month August for many children in the United States is the beginning of a brand new school year. According to the recent report from the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness (NCCVEH), vision plays an important role in a child’s physical, cognitive, and social development. Visual functioning is a strong predictor of academic performance in school-aged children. According to the results from the “2016 National Survey of Children’s Health,” less than 70 percent of children in the United States are receiving appropriate vision screenings or eye examinations. Children are more likely to receive a vision screening or eye examination as the household income increases. Minority children are also at increased risk of missing critical steps to ensure healthy vision. The survey found that white, non-Hispanic children are more likely to receive a vision screening or eye examination, followed by Hispanics, and black children. Children who are Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders have a much lower rate of preventive vision care. Health literacy of parents and caregivers is also a factor in children’s overall health care. According to the Pediatrics article, “Child
Health Disparities and Health Literacy,” low health literacy is a growing problem for Americans, with studies reporting 90 million adults with a limited understanding of basic health information and services. Half of all parents have difficulty reading and understanding patient education materials, and many struggle to comprehend medical advice that is critical to the care of their child, including their child’s vision health. Prevent Blindness and the National Optometric Association have combined their efforts to declare August as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month to educate the public on the importance of healthy vision for all children. Prevent Blindness provides free information on a variety of topics, including amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (crossed eyes), recommended sports eye protection, and more on its website. A listing of financial assistance programs is also provided to assist parents and caregivers with access to eye examinations and glasses for their children. Prevent Blindness recommends a continuum of eye care for children that can include both vision screening and comprehensive eye exams. All children, even those

with no signs of trouble, should have their eyes checked at regular intervals. Any child who experiences vision problems or shows symptoms of eye trouble should receive a comprehensive eye exam by an eye care provider (an optometrist or an ophthalmologist.) Some children are more likely to have eye problems. A child’s doctor should be aware of several factors that may make a child more likely to develop a vision problem. Those factors include: the child was born prematurely; the child has a family history of eye problems; the child has had an eye injury; and the child has diabetes. Children in high-risk categories should be examined by an eye care provider, such as an optometrist or an ophthalmologist. For more information on children’s eye health and safety, the NCCVEH, or financial assistance programs, readers may call Prevent Blindness at 800-331-2020 or visit www.prevent blindness.org.
