Church in Eagle. EBBC still maintains a relationship with the congregation at Windsor Baptist through joint services. The initial church building survived a fire in 1856 and over the years underwent several renovations and dedications. The church purchased an additional 10 acres of land that surrounded the building in 1964. The original church building remained on the property until it was torn down in 1991. EBBC remains respectful of its history and has placed a plaque on the church grounds where the old church once stood. The plaque explains the history of the original church, stating, “The first East Brandywine Baptist Church, located on Route 322 near Corner Ketch-Lyndell Road, was built in 1842 under the pastorate of Rev. Thomas S. Griffith.” Additionally, the plaque states, “Just to the east of the original church building, a circle of trees honors the ‘local boys’ who served in WWII. The center tree honors Clarence Krauss, who was killed in action.” Near where the old church once stood is a cemetery where many of the church’s original members are buried. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new church building were held on Aug. 20, 1967. The cornerstone for this building, finished in 1968, is inscribed, “To God Be the Glory.” A family center, including a gym, Sunday school rooms and a kitchen, were completed in 1988. The present church building was dedicated on June 12, 2011. Remodeling and redecorating efforts have continued more recently. The 1968 cornerstone is on display in the current church building along with the original cornerstone from 1842. Throughout the years of new buildings, projects and renovations, the church’s motto has remained, “The Gospel Changes Everything.” For more information about EBBC and the anniversary events, readers may visit www.ebbcpa.org or contact the church office at 610-269-8651. This is the second year that the event is being held at the fire company. It previously took place at the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center. “It was great last year. There was more space, and it was easier for the customers to maneuver,” said crafter Mary Kilareski, noting that the tables of items are replenished throughout the craft fair. Among the crafts for sale will be decor for the holidays, such as handcrafted pumpkins and ghosts for Halloween and wreaths and hand-painted snowmen and other decorations for Christmas. A lot of the crafts that will be offered for sale were repurposed from other materials. “We have a gentleman - Rick Miller - who keeps on the lookout for items when he is out at auctions and sales, and he donates them to us,” Kilareski said, noting that one of his finds were wooden shutters. Kilareski explained that group member Karen Stover hand-painted the panels, with snowman on one side and pumpkins on the other. Another repurposed item is a serving dish made from a rolling pin and pie plates. For children, there will be a Santa Claus “key” offered for sale. “In case their house doesn’t have a chimney, they can have a key (for Santa),” Kilareski noted. New this year will be Christmas legends gift bags. “We did Christmas legends, including the Legend of the Christmas Spider, the Robin and the Legend of the Christmas Rose,” said Kilareski, noting that the legends will be written on a card and included in the bag along with a corresponding Christmas tree ornament. “We have the Christmas Apron story, and we included some Christmas aprons,” she added. Also new this year will be gourds that have been painted to look like penguins. All proceeds from the craft show will benefit the fire company and Hopewell Love In the Name of Christ (Love INC), a charitable organization that helps with the dayto-day needs of Birdsboroarea residents. Hopewell Love INC is a nondenominational group that maintains a fo o d p a n t r y , h a s h e l p e d establish an outreach to local youths and facilitates the Community Table, a community meal that is offered at the fire company. Many of the members of Busy Fingers, Fancy Workers are also active with Hopewell Love INC, which is headquartered at St. Gabriel’s Church in Douglassville. Future goals of the crafting group including teaching craftmaking skills to others. Information about classes will be announced in October. Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) will present its Kids’ Fall Outgrown Sale on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to noon. Offered for sale will be children’s and teenagers’ fall and winter clothing, girls’ purses and accessories, baby and children’s furniture, play equipment, video games, CDs, DVDs and more. The sale will be located in the school gymnasium, where nearly 60 consignors, including members of the PJP II school family and alumni, will offer items for sale. Clothing will be sorted by size and gender, with a separate section for teenagers. “We will have racks of clothing on hangers and tables (where) everything will be folded and sorted nicely,” said Jackie Fuller, who is cochairing the sale along with Trish Goodman. A consignment sale is held at PJP II twice each year, in the fall and again in the spring. For the upcoming sale, seasonappropriate attire will be offered. “We will have winter coats, hats, boots and snowsuits,” said Fuller. “ We will have racks with boys’ and girls’ holiday clothing like girls’ sparkly dresses. We also usually get a lot of Halloween costumes.” Also offered for sale will be First Communion dresses, as well as toys and books, electronics and sporting equipment, including bicycles, scooters, ice skates and inline skates. Organizers make every effort to keep the checkout lines moving, so there is less of

a wait for shoppers. “We will have 10 checkout lines, including two express lines,” Fuller noted. Only cash or checks will be accepted at the sale. Fuller said that items sold at the sale are in good used condition. “We don’t take anything with rips or stains. We go through every item to make sure it’s OK. If it’s not OK, we’ll remove it and return it to the consignor. We (also) make sure all the toys work.” Parent volunteers help run the event with help from PJP II sixth-, seventh- and eighthgraders. The youths provide assistance with cleanup and setup, which includes transporting items to the second floor, where the gym is located. “They do a lot of the heavy lifting. They take the tables and chairs upstairs and help consignors bring in their items,” Fuller noted. “Some of the kids stay after school to help us and some of the teachers let them come and help us at the end of the school day (on Friday).” At the conclusion of the sale, sellers will have the option of taking back their unsold merchandise. Goods that the consignors do not take with them will be donated to charity. The Kids’ Fall Outgrown Sale is open to the public, and admission is free. All proceeds will benefit the students of PJP II. PJP II serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade from four local churches - St. Peter in West Brandywine, Our Lady of the Rosary in Coatesville, St. Joseph in Coatesville and Our Lady of Consolation in Parkesburg. The school also offers a prekindergarten program for children

LaMancha Animal Rescue in Unionville recently received a donation of $2,460 as a result of an event conceived and managed by a Pennsylvania College of Technology student. Victoria A. Sosar of Berwick is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on sport and event management. As part of an internship this summer with Beale Manor in Parkesburg, a special events venue in Chester County, Sosar was given the opportunity to plan and hold an event of her own. Sosar planned a Sip and Drool Festival to benefit LaMancha Animal Rescue in Unionville. The family-friendly event included activities for both children and pets. Sosar also lined up several food vendors, 20 craft and product vendors, a variety of gift baskets that were given out as prizes, musical entertainment and a special presentation by the Chester County K-9 Unit. The event not only raised funds for LaMancha Animal Rescue, but also promoted pet adoption. The animal rescue brought adoptable dogs to the event, and four LaMancha dogs were adopted as a result

An officer from the Chester County K-9 Unit provided a demonstration during the Sip and Drool Festival, an event created and managed by Penn College student Victoria A. Sosar as part of an internship at Beale Manor in Parkesburg. of the festival. Sosar’s planning began well before her summer internship officially commenced in May. She sought vendors, a disc jockey, and other entertainment. She also developed a logo and began a Facebook campaign months before the July 14 event. During the spring semester, when she began formulating her plans, Sosar was enrolled in a Professional Event Planning course taught by chef

Frank M. Suchwala, associate professor of hospitality management/culinary arts. The course teaches students to manage successful events, beginning with comprehensive planning that encompasses resources, site specifications and audience accommodations. LaMancha rescues and finds homes for horses, dogs, cats, goats and the occasional exotic animal. More information is available at www.lamancha animalrescue.org.

Sports Eye Safety Tips Posted Prevent Blindness, an eye health organization, has declared September as Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month to help educate the public on the need to protect vision while participating in sports activities. New annual data from Prevent Blindness shows that more than 33,000 Americans were treated for sports-related eye injuries last year. Eye injuries from any sport may include infection, corneal abrasions, fracture of the eye socket, swollen or detached retinas or a traumatic cataract. Eye injuries from water sports may include eye infections and irritations, and scratches or trauma from other swimmers. As part of September’s Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month, Prevent Blindness has posted tips on buying sports eye protectors. Shoppers should always consult an eye care professional to get the best eye protection for their sport and lifestyle. Wearers of prescription glasses

should ask their eye doctor to fit them for prescription eye protection. Monocular athletes, those with only one eye that sees well, should ask their eye doctor what sports they may safely play. Athletes should not buy eye protection without lenses. Only lensed protectors are recommended for sports use. Athletes should make sure the lenses either stay in place or pop outward in the event of an accident. Lenses that pop in against the eyes may cause serious injury. Fogging of the lenses can be a problem when a person is active. Some eye protection options are available with anti-fog coating. Others have side vents for additional ventilation. Shoppers should try on different types to determine which is most comfortable for them. Shoppers should check an eye protector’s packaging to see if the item has been tested for sports use and if it is made of polycarbonate material. Polycarbonate eye protection is the most

impact resistant. Sports eye protection should be padded or cushioned along the brow and bridge of the nose. Padding will prevent the eye guards from cutting the skin. Athletes should try on eye protectors to determine if they are the right size. The strap should be adjusted so it is not too tight or too loose. Athletes should consult their eye care professional to ensure eye protectors have a comfortable, safe fit. During Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month, Prevent Blindness is offering printed materials to assist eye care professionals in educating consumers on the importance of eye safety during sports. To request a free kit, readers may contact Angela Gerber at 973-882-0986, ext. 972, or agerber@liberty sport.com. For more information on sports eye injury prevention or contact lens safety, readers may call Prevent Blindness at 800331-2020 or visit www.prevent blindness.org/sports-eye-safety.

Animal Rescue Benefits From Event

Local workforce development boards can apply for $2.5 million in Business-Education Partnership (BEP) grants that will connect businesses and school districts in an effort to expand career opportunities across Pennsylvania. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Oct. 31. The funding is available

This approach is demonstrating results throughout the prison and better outcomes for both inmates and staff. The 2018 recipient of the Juvenile Alternatives Program Award is Lancaster County for their P.U.L.S.E. Evening Treatment Center. Lancaster County’s Juvenile Court, the Office of Juvenile Probation, and the Children and Youth Agency were experiencing a reduced accessibility to specialized programs, as well as the closure of some residential facilities. This resulted in their need to seek out opportunities to keep low to moderate risk juveniles within close proximity to home and community resources which could parallel the successful outcomes of longterm placements. The Youth Intervention Center initially developed the P.U.L.S.E. Weekend Program with the objective of providing short-term, evidence-based treatment with the goal of diverting juveniles away from the need for long-term placements. The participant’s goals, program length, and groups will be determined based on recommendations from the juvenile probation officer or children and youth caseworker, consultation with the parents/guardians, and results of various assessments. The youths participate in evidence-based programs, as well as psycho-educational groups. The results are demonstrated in improved outcomes for juveniles and their families. The Partner Award recipient is Carolyn McKenna, director of development at Home of the Sparrow

The County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) recently bestowed Criminal Justice System for the 21st Century Best Practices Awards. The 2018 Best Practices Award in the large county jail category was presented to Lancaster County Prison for their PrisonStat Program, an active leadership strategy to achieve transparency, accountability, and efficiency at the prison, drive real measurable results, and help turnaround within the organization. First initiated in 2016, PrisonStat is modeled on the Performance Stat idea which is an active leadership model that uses an ongoing series of regular meetings during which the chief executive and/or leadership team uses current data to analyze aspects of an organization’s performance. This continuing analysis of predetermined metrics produces results by pushing the organization toward performance targets. It also provides leaders with the ability to articulate to the organization and public what improved results need to be demonstrated. Each department head is assigned a metric pertaining to their job description, and are responsible for oversight of a specific area. They are held accountable during the public meeting scheduled every two months and their performance is transparent for the public to see whether positive or negative. An Honorable Mention in the large jail category was awarded to Berks County Prison for their Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Certification. With their rising mental health population, they recognized a need to improve staff training and education about signs and symptoms of mental illness, for all staff, especially custody supervisors and correctional officers. Staff was trained through Mental

in Chester County. Trauma histories, substance use, housing and self-sufficiency are among the challenges facing women’s successful re-entry from incarceration in Chester County’s criminal justice system. Partnering with the County Criminal Justice System, Home of the Sparrow provides case management services to women re-integrating into their communities following the Collaborative CaseworkWomen Model developed by the National Institute of Corrections. Home of the Sparrow embraces the philosophy that case management for justice-involved women should be a dynamic, seamless process from entry into the system and

PUBLIC SALE HISTORIC BROOKE MANSION & CONTENTS OUTSTANDING 3 ACRE REAL ESTATE WITH 3 STORY MANSION FURNITURE, ORIENTAL RUGS, ARTWORKS, COLLECTIBLES, H.H. GOODS BIRDSBORO, PENNSYLVANIA

“We try to live out the parable of the Good Samaritan. We recognize people … who are hurting and suffering in our communities. We meet them where they’re at, and we respond with generosity and compassion,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of Good Samaritan Services, when he spoke recently at a meeting of the New Holland Area Kiwanis Club. Good Samaritan, with locations in Ephrata, Lancaster, Coatesville, and Phoenixville, was founded as the Good Samaritan Shelter in 2002 when several Phoenixvillearea churches joined forces to help area residents who were struggling, especially with housing. The Ephrata location provides an 8,000square-foot homeless shelter to as many as 35 women and children per day. The Phoenixville shelter for single men can also house 35. The Lancaster and Coatesville offices focus on permanent housing. “Our staff (in those offices) help single mothers stay in their (homes),” explained Hoffer. “Our program will step in with rental assistance to keep (a mother and) her children in housing to prevent them from having to come to the shelter.” Hoffer added that the process of being uprooted and moved to a shelter is especially difficult on children, who may struggle with poor academic performance and even health issues related to homelessness. Hoffer noted that Good Samaritan may spend up to $9,000 per month in rental assistance helping people stay in their homes, translating to serving

up to 65 children each day through its programs. According to Hoffer, the Good Samaritan model utilizes a holistic approach that includes financial assistance, professional social workers, and mentor volunteers from local churches to surround a single mother with support. “We do weekly budgeting, life coaching, and mentoring (with our clients),” said Hoffer, who added that the children the organization serves receive help as well. “We help children learn to read and write,” he said. “We focus on building the literacy skills to give (children) the tools they need to succeed.” The Ephrata shelter can accommodate a woman and her children from six months up to two years, giving the family the time necessary to secure affordable housing. Hoffer added that unfortunately about 60 to 70 percent of the families living in the shelter have fled abusive situations. “Domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among women nationally,” said Hoffer, who added that Good Samaritan receives referrals from local churches that appreciate the shelter because it is safe, secure, and staffed by professional social workers. Good Samaritan Services is a private, nonprofit, faith-based organization that is fully dependent on the community for support. “It costs $23 per day per person to provide shelter, food, supplies, and case management services,” said Hoffer. “We pride ourselves on being efficient.” Hoffer noted that the organization applies for grants and holds several yearly fundraising events. “About 25 percent comes

from grants and about 25 percent from fundraising,” he stated. Adding lighthearted moments into the lives of those it serves is also a goal of Good Samaritan. “We try to have fun,” said Hoffer. “We hold a Christmas party, and once a year, we visit a miniature horse farm to take the (children and their mothers) for an outing,” added Hoffer, who lauded an Ephrata bakery that provides birthday parties for the children at the shelter.

Hoffer noted that one of the most valuable resources Good Samaritan can give to its clients is time. “We have professional social workers to help clients achieve their goals, but that takes time,” said Hoffer. “There are often a number of issues (involved) that can’t be fixed in a week. We give people the gift of time.” Readers who would like to know more about Good Samaritan Services may visit www.goodsamservices.org.

Nate Hoffer, executive director of Good Samaritan Services, recently spoke at a meeting of the New Holland Area Kiwanis Club. The nonprofit organization helps those facing homelessness in locations in both Lancaster and Chester counties.
