Village Library offers Tail Waggin’ Tutors program
BY FRANCINE FULTON
As part of the Tail Waggin’ Tutors program, children are invited to practice their reading skills with Babes, a certified therapy dog available at the Village Library of Morgantown.
Babes, 6, is a sheepadoodle, which is a combination of a sheep dog and a poodle. She is accompanied to the library by her handlers, Stephen and Diana Richards of Exeter.
Babes, who has been a therapy dog for just over a year, visited the library for the first time in July. She and her handlers also visit local nursing homes.
“We talked about getting a dog, and I said that no matter what kind we get, I wanted her trained to be a therapy dog,” said Diana.
“We took her to Awesome Dawgs in Reading, and she became certified with Therapy Dogs International.”
Stephen noted that Babes has especially been a source of joy for nursing home residents.
“She is really good with the older folks. When we see people that have (memory issues), they light up and remember her and she remembers them,” he stated.
“We see a guy who can be a little grouchy, but when he sees her, his whole demeanor changes.
(Visiting with Babes) affects them in a positive way.”
The Richardses noted that they actually met Babes while on a meet-and-greet with another dog.
“We were looking at a different dog named Monkey. We had been in communication with a dog foster with Home at Last dog rescue,” Diana explained. “Our son and I were on the ground with the other dog, and (Babes) comes walking in between us and the other dog and put her head on my son’s chest. She picked (us). She came home with us that day.”
“I wasn’t the one trying to get a dog. My wife and my son, John, really wanted a dog,” Stephen

Preserving historyone leaf at a time
BY FRANCINE FULTON
When Chester County artist Margot Taylor heard that the Wawaset oak tree had fallen, she, along with many local residents, visited the site and quietly reflected on its history. The tree had stood alongside a spring house at the entry to the Myrick Conservation Center along Route 842 in Unionville, and it was a Penn oak, meaning it was a tree that was alive during the time when William Penn claimed his territory in Pennsylvania in 1682.
With permission, Taylor collected some leaves from the fallen oak and used them to make clay replicas to create a tribute to the tree and as a way to preserve history.
Samples of these clay leaf replicas will be featured as part of an art exhibit titled “Penn’s Wood Celebrated,” which will be presented by the Green Valleys Watershed Association (GVWA) on Sunday, Oct. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Welkinweir estate house, 1368 Prizer Road, Pottstown.

Conestoga Christian School (CCS) will hold its 51st annual chicken barbecue and auction on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18 and 19. The funds raised at the event will benefit the overall financial operation of the school, which offers classes for students in preschool through 12th grade.
The event will begin with the barbecue dinner on Oct. 18.
Dinners may be picked up in the school’s front parking lot from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dinners can be eaten on-site from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium.

“We added a dine-in component this year during dinner time,” noted Michelle Parris, CCS admissions director, explaining that the eat-in option was not offered during the pandemic. “We are keeping the drive-through part because that is convenient for families to pull in, pick up dinner and take it home.”
Also on Oct. 18, a gift certificate store will be open outside the school until 4 p.m.; the store will then move into the school gymnasium.
Additionally, homemade apple dumplings will be available for purchase. Visitors may purchase a pan of eight dumplings for a fee.
Following the barbecue, there will be an alumni celebration behind the school. “We have great alumni events planned,” said Parris. “The evening will kick off with a student powderpuff football championship game, followed by an alumni soccer game.”
A live auction will be held on Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. until the last item is sold. The auction will feature a

Taylor has been collecting and preserving leaves from Penn oak trees since 2016, visiting sites in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware.

“I got in my car and drove around after the trees had fallen. I collected the leaves of the trees that I found, and I took them home,” she explained, noting that she received permission from each of the property owners before removing the leaves. “I then put them in a bucket of water, rehydrated them, and I put them onto a slab of clay. I rolled them into the slab of clay - one leaf, one clay replica.”
Each leaf on display will be accompanied by a description. “I love the history and specialness of the trees and where they stood and (how they are) connected with the human story,” said Taylor. “Each of them will be accompanied by a written piece that tells its place in history.”
Taylor was able to locate the trees using the book “Penn’s Woods 1682 - 1982,” authored by GVWA’s first executive director, Halfred Wertz, along with M. Joy Callender, The pair researched how many of the documented trees were still alive, starting a multi-year search for the remaining trees.
“In the book, there is a series of chapters. The majority of plants are in Pennsylvania. The Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey (trees) were a separate chapter,” Taylor noted. “They stated the tree by number and gave a relative location - all before GPS was available.”
Taylor traveled many miles throughout the various states, sometimes accompanied by friends. “What I learned was that living plants become more vital by hydrating them,” she said. “I took a bunch of brown leaves from a paper bag, plunged them gently into a
bucket of water, and 24 hours later, I had supple leaves to work with.”
She recalled visiting an oak tree at the London Grove Meeting that had fallen in 2023. “For a week, people walked quietly and were sitting around the tree, and you would hear the stories of their personal connections,” she recalled. “There was a constant endless flow of people. To me, the tree is a living being, and people talked about how that tree was important to them.”
Taylor, who is also a landscape architect, said it is important to preserve these Penn oaks, noting that William Penn frequently signed treaties with the Native Americans under an oak tree.
“I encourage (people) to learn the stories of these trees and to visit those (trees that are) still living to witness their magic first hand, before it is too late,” said Taylor. She added that she plans to eventually return the clay leaves to the owners of the property where they were found.
Also featured during the “Penn’s Woods Celebrated” exhibit will be photos by commercial photographer Carlos Alejandro. “Carlos Alejandro joins me with his amazing photographs of these trees taken over a six-year span,” Taylor stated. “He will have an absolutely stunning picture of the fallen London Grove oak that he framed using the wood from the tree.”
Admission to the art exhibit is free. Reservations are requested by emailing welkinweir@green valleys.org. Walks-ins will also be welcome.
For more information about the event, visit www.greenval leys.org and choose “Events.”

Church to host guest speaker
St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 300 W. First St., Birdsboro, will host guest speaker Naomi Washington-Leapheart during Sunday worship on Oct. 20 at 9:30 a.m. Washington-Leapheart will address the theme of “Respect” as part of St. Paul’s sermon series “Do Unto Others.” The series explores the Golden Rule, which encourages people to engage in conversation and work together to create a common good with others, even those they may disagree with politically or ideologically. The goal is to discover the beauty that can be created when people work together to make the world a better place.
Washington-Leapheart is an adjunct professor of theology and religious studies at Villanova University, and she is the Religion and Public Life Government Fellow at Harvard Divinity School. She serves as the first-ever strategic partnerships director at Political Research Associates (PRA), a social justice research and strategy center.

added. “She came home, and I ended up being her person. I have a T-shirt that Diane bought for me that says, ‘Emotional support human.’ That’s my job.”
Those who visit with Babes at the library will receive her business card, which states that her job is to “alleviate stress and enhance the well-being” of those who come in contact with her. This makes her the ideal dog for children to read to, especially those who are uncomfortable reading aloud or those who are struggling
with reading.
According to Therapy Dogs International, by sitting down next to a dog and reading to the animal, children are able to relax and put their fears aside. “She is not judgmental,” said Diana. Babes generally is on hand at the Village Library, 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown, every other Saturday. To learn the date of Babes’ next scheduled visit and to register for a time slot to read to her, call 610-286-1022 or email smolibrary@gmail.com.

selection of items that have been popular at previous auctions, experiences, artwork and quilts, as well as jellies and jams and homemade yogurt donated each year by CCS families.
“Local businesses are so good to us,” Parris stated. “Trish from Flourish Flowers donated a pass to her Christmas garden party. The apples (for the apple dumplings) were donated to us by Weaver’s Orchard.”
“A lot of our parents are very talented,” she added, noting that parents volunteer throughout the two-day event. “One of our parents is going to do a pour paint class. We also have a family that has a lake house in Tennessee, and they are donating time to use that lake house.”
In addition, each class at the school has designed a themed basket for the auction. Basket themes this year will include Date Night, Stay-cation, Dad’s Day Off, Adventure Seeker, Family Game Night, Gardening, Fishing, Beach Weekend, Snack Attack, Living
Local and College Bound. Bidding on class baskets will start at 9:30 a.m. CCS students have also created items that will be up for bids, including paintings.
“Right after the class baskets are auctioned, we will give the bidders an opportunity to raise their paddles to make a donation toward our special project,” said Parris, noting that in years past the projects have been a new copier, playground equipment, a bus and picnic tables. “This year, our special project is our capital campaign. The thing we are most excited about is we laid the foundation to add four new classrooms. It will house our fifth grade and two music rooms. We aim to have the classrooms paid in full upon completing the project in January.”
Breakfast sandwiches and individual apple dumplings will also be offered for sale at the Cougar Cafe on Oct. 19. Cougar Grounds will offer hot coffee, cold brew, hot cider and hot chocolate.

CCS is holding an online auction as well. Bidding will start on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 8 a.m. and run through Sunday, Oct. 27, at noon. Items, unless other arrangements are made, must be picked up at the school.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely,
Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio
