Twin Valley student to co-host 5K BY FRANCINE FULTON

Maille McNicholas, 16, a junior at Twin Valley High School, is helping to organize the first Pennsylvania Purple Polka Dot 5K Fundraiser and Family Fun Run to benefit the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation (VBF). The event will take place at Cassel Vineyards of Hershey, 80 Shetland Drive, Hummelstown, on Sunday, Nov. 5. The 5K will

start at 11 a.m., followed by the fun run at 12:15 p.m. In addition to Maille, the other hosts of the event are Ava Pyles, 23, of Hummelstown and Liz Stern, 19, and Ava Wolchuk, 19, both of Wynnewood. All four young ladies were born with different types of vascular birthmarks, anomalies or related syndromes, and all serve as VBF Global Ambassadors. Healing with Horses fundraiser set at Honey Brook farm BY FRANCINE FULTON

Halloween events planned BY FRANCINE FULTON

Children with physical disabilities can benefit from therapeutic horseback riding offered by Healing with Horses.

Community members may attend either or both events. “For those interested in horse-related (information), they can come for the day, and there will be demonstrations and speakers,” Callie explained. “Our

(event) in the evening is for anyone who wants to come out and eat barbecue on the farm and support the cause. There will also be a silent auction.” Guest speakers will address topics

Local groups have planned special programs to celebrate Halloween. Among the activities are Trunk or Treat events, which aim to offer a safe alternative to trick-or-treating door to door. Instead, children can travel from vehicle to vehicle collecting candy and treats. Children are encouraged to dress in costume, and attendees should bring their own bags for collecting candy. St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 5 Brooke Manor, Birdsboro, will hold its annual Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine.

The church will provide hot dogs, snacks and beverages. Those who would like to decorate their trunk and distribute candy should register with the church office by calling 610-582-8167 or emailing secretary@ stmarkbirdsboro.org. BSA Troop 56 will present its annual Trunk or Treat on Sunday, Oct. 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Saint Peter Catholic Church, 2835 Manor Road, West Brandywine. Setup will begin at 4:30 p.m. for those handing out treats. In lieu of an admission fee, attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for the Honey Brook Food Pantry. See Halloween pg 2

any local residents are familiar with the King farm in Honey Brook, which was once a dairy farm and later served as an outdoor furniture manufacturing business. It was also home to Honey Brook Stables, owned by Callie King. Now, the farm is being sold, transitioning back to a working farm, and Callie is celebrating the milestone by hosting a fundraiser to benefit Healing with Horses, a nonprofit organization in Zimbabwe, Africa, that offers therapeutic horseback riding for children. The event, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, will include a day of horse-related programs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a chicken barbecue and party beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Maille McNicholas (second from left) is hosting the event along with (from left) Liz Stern, Ava Wolchuk and Ava Pyles.

She said that she chose Healing with Horses as a beneficiary because of its effort to help children with disabilities, including cerebral palsy. According to the center, therapeutic horseback riding can strengthen the muscles of children with physical ailments and can comfort those with posttraumatic stress disorder or who have been victims of abuse. More information about the organization is available at www.healing withhorseszimbabwe.com. “Healing with Horses helps up to 150 disabled children every week, helping them feel loved, accepted and find healing on the backs of horses, mostly rescued horses,” Callie said. “They are in need of funding for daily operations and have dreams of expanding their facility to better serve their clients, including children from orphanages.” Callie noted that the family’s closing celebration at the farm will fall on the same date as the 10th anniversary of Healing with Horses. “Several things lined up - our farm is closing, and their 10-year anniversary is on Oct. 28,” said Callie. “We wanted to come together to celebrate all the good times. And, as we say goodbye to our facility, we will be helping to expand theirs.” The King farm is located at 80 King Road, Honey Brook. Twin Valley student from pg 1 upcoming event will be modeled after the Purple Polka Dot Race held in Michigan, which has been hosted annually since 2016 by race founder Jody Lee, in honor of her daughter, Meghana, who was born with a port wine stain birthmark on her face. The name of the race comes from the purplish polka dots that temporarily mark Meghana’s skin following her laser treatments. All proceeds from the event, which is one of the largest fundraisers for the VBF, are directly donated to the foundation to support its charitable work, including education, referrals and free treatment clinics. “I went to the race (in Michigan) with Liz, and we drove down together and, on the way home, we came up with the idea to bring the race to Pennsylvania,” Maille said. “We started reaching out to others in the community with vascular birthmarks and they agreed, and we started planning together.”

Each of the young women has taken on various roles in planning the event. “We have weekly Zoom calls, which we started last year,” Maille said. “I am doing social media and will be emceeing the awards ceremony at the race. Liz Stern is organizing the volunteers. Ava Pyles is doing the course setup with her stepdad and getting sponsorship because she lives in the area where the race is taking place. The people who own the vineyard were so kind to donate to the venue to us for raceday. Ava W. is working with the starting and finishing line coordination.” The 5K will be a cross-countrystyle run through the vineyards. “Every participant will get a Hershey bar, and there will be wine available for tasting and purchasing for adults after the race,” said Maille’s mother, Megan McNicholas, a member of the Purple Polka Dot Race committee. “The fun run is a 1-mile walk/run for

the kids (and their families).” The goal of the event is to raise $10,000 for the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation. “We would love to see 150 5K participants, and we are hoping to achieve that (monetary) goal,” Megan added.
