Boone Area Library Welcomes New Director By Francine Fulton

“Times change. We change and the way we do things changes but the main thing is that (libraries) have the same mission - which is to provide free access to information, whether it’s in books or on the computer,” said Ryan McCrory, the new director of the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro. “That’s what we’re here for. That core mission remains the same.” McCrory, who began his new position in late August, applied for the job in June after viewing a job posting on the Berks County Libraries website. He then participated in an interview via phone and video chat with the library’s board of directors. “(The job) fit what I needed, and I think in many ways I fit what they needed and what they were looking for,” he stated. McCrory, who most recently worked as a library assistant for Seattle Public

Libraries, noted that although he saw photos of the Boone Area Library on its website, he did not visit the facility prior to the start of work. “At the end of July, I came out here to look for a place to live and I drove through Birdsboro,” he recalled. “I did not see the inside of the building until my first day.” He said that he was pleased with the size of the library, which includes a community meeting room, a teenager center, a children’s area, a kitchen and the Boone Bookstore. “It’s much larger than it looks like from the outside. I was amazed by the space,” he said. “I would really like to find ways to utilize (the space) and do more programs.” Current programming offered at the library includes Teen Movie Night, Family Movie Night, story time for children, the Cliffhanger Book Club and a Mahjong group, among other activities. An upcoming event will be story time See Boone Area Library pg 4

Sheriff’s Office from pg 1 The Chester County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) recently received a delivery of food as part of the Cookies for a Cop initiative to express appreciation for members of law enforcement. On Oct. 16, volunteers Debi Raughley and her husband, David, delivered multiple boxes of homemade cookies, pretzels, and dog treats to the CCSO. In Chester County, Raughley and her group planned to serve 30 police and fire agencies during this year’s campaign, which took place from Oct. 15 to 19. If the first responders groups include any four-legged officers, they

received treats as well. The annual Fall Back on Us campaign requires months of planning, including calls to the various offices to get a head count so that no one is left out. Raughley said a group of approximately 30 bakers lent their talents to creating this year’s bounty. In 2016, Cookies for a Cop’s name was changed to Cookies for a Cop and Our Fire Friends, and Raughley expanded the local program to include firefighters. Like many of the bakers, Raughley has strong ties to first responders. Her son is a third-generation law enforcement officer who is

also married to a police officer. For more information on the Cookies for a Cop program, readers may contact its founder, Becky Grizovic, at becky@cookies foracop.com or visit https:// cookiesforacop.com/. The 2018 schedule includes deliveries to more than 700 departments in 26 states and two countries.

it’s not your traditional book club,” McCrory noted. Since starting as director, McCrory has spent time getting to know the neighbors in the community. “One of the things about the staff here is they care about the communities that we service. Even though we are in Birdsboro, we provide service for (surrounding townships too),” he said. “A big part of what I want to do is get out in the communities and let them know what we have to offer.” McCrory’s job is also to oversee the staff, which includes the children’s librarian; four staff members that work in circulation, who are responsible for shelving, checking out books and overseeing interlibrary loans; and two high school students who are library aides. McCrory said he finds his new job exciting and challenging, noting that he found moving his book collection across the country this summer challenging as well. “I own a little over 2,000 books. Moving those was quite an ordeal,” he said. “They are books I collected over the years. When I was a historian, I used them for research. I probably don’t need them any longer, but I have a hard time getting rid of them. I love books.” The Boone Area Library is located at 129 N. Mill St., Birdsboro. Our computers have Ancestry.com on them so people can come and use it without having to purchase a subscription,” he noted, adding, “We have books and book clubs, but we have technology classes that we could offer and have people come in and learn how to use their tablets.” One of the library’s unique programs is its Tween/Teen Boon ‘n’ Bake. “(Youths) come in and make a recipe, and while it’s cooking, they discuss a book, so

How To Improve Safety While Driving Many drivers are less comfortable driving at night than during the day. However, following several simple steps can help drivers enhance their nighttime visibility and reduce their risk of being in an accident. Daytime running lights can make it easier for drivers to be seen during the day, but they are not designed for nighttime driving. If a driver is struggling to see as evening transitions into nighttime, it is recommended they turn their headlights on earlier, using the car’s automatic switch setting if it has one. Properly maintained headlights can improve driver visibility at night. And such maintenance is simple, yet effective. Drivers should simply check the age and performance of their headlight bulbs. If they are more than three years old and/or dimming, they should be replaced to ensure optimal performance. A recent AAA study discovered that the halogen headlights found in more than 80 percent of vehicles on the road today fail to safely illuminate unlit roadways, even when vehicles are moving at speeds as low as 40 miles per hour. By upgrading their headlights, drivers can quickly and effectively put more light on the road. The plastic headlamp lenses found on most vehicles tend to become hazed and yellow over time from the effects of sunlight, ozone, road pollution, and carwash chemicals. Such clouding reduces headlight output and compromises nighttime visibility. Headlight restoration kits can be used to combat clouding on headlights as well as taillights, turn signals, and reflective lens covers, improving driver visibility while also making cars more visible to other drivers. In addition, headlight restoration kits may employ a protective UV coating that produces longer lens clarity while preventing future clouding.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) showcased its new Real ID Mobile Verification Unit at the Aviation Council of Pennsylvania’s 38th annual conference. Attendees brought their Real ID documents, and PennDOT staff imaged the documents to the customer’s driving record without the customer having to visit a PennDOT Driver License Center. Once Real IDs are available in March 2019, these customers will be able to apply for a Real ID online, and it will be mailed to them within seven to 10 business days. Starting Oct. 1, 2020, a federally accepted form of identification, such as a Real ID driver’s license or ID card, must be used as identification to board a commercial flight or visit a secure federal building. Pennsylvania does not require Real ID, and PennDOT will continue to offer standard-issue driver’s licenses and photo IDs. Federal regulations require that to be issued a Real ID-compliant product, PennDOT must verify the following documents: proof of identity, including an original or certified copy of a birth certificate with a raised seal or valid U.S. Passport; proof of Social Security Number (unlaminated Social Security card); proof of all legal name changes (such as a marriage certificate or court order issued by a county’s family court); and two proofs of current, physical Pennsylvania address, such as a current, unexpired PA license or ID and a no more than 90-day-old bank statement or utility bill with the same name and address. To obtain a Real ID, customers will pay a one-time fee, plus a renewal fee for a four-year noncommercial driver’s license or a photo ID. After the initial Real ID product expires, the customer will pay no additional fee, beyond regular renewal fees, to renew a Real ID product. More information about Real ID in Pennsylvania, including frequently asked questions and information on documents required for Real ID, may be found at www.penndot.gov/REALID.

In response to the opioid and heroin epidemic, Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance (PFSA) has announced a new pilot program to strengthen parenting skills for persons recovering from substance use disorder (SUD). Helping parents learn healthy coping and parenting skills while balancing the needs of their recovery is the goal of the program, which is slated to launch in November at select family centers across the state. PFSA developed the curriculum and first piloted it successfully last fall at Hamilton Health Center in Harrisburg. The personfirst curriculum draws on the latest research in addiction recovery and best practices in parenting, and it is inclusive of the 12 Step principles of recovery. Topics covered in the seven sessions of the program will include Identifying Parent and Family Strengths and Needs, Understanding How Principles of Recovery Can Be Applied to the Parenting Experience, Learning and Navigating the Change Process as a Parent and Within the Family, Understanding How Family History Influences Parenting and Communication Style, Developing an Understanding of Discipline and Development, Identifying and Practicing Healthy Coping Skills, Managing

Visits and Effective Communication With Caregivers, and Developing a Plan for Individual SelfCare and Family Wellness as Part of the Recovery Experience. The family service and support providers participating in the pilot include Coatesville Family Center in Chester County and Perry County Family Center. The sites selected for the statewide pilot expansion are designated as Centers of Excellence in Pennsylvania - medical providers and systems that bring a whole-person approach to helping Pennsylvanians recover from SUD. A grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services enables PFSA to offer the program. PFSA and the Office of Child Development and Early Learning will host an interactive facilitator training session from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, and Friday, Nov. 2, at PaTTAN, 6340 Flank Drive, Harrisburg. All identified Families in Recovery program facilitators are required to attend the training prior to receiving any program-related materials and in order to move forward with program implementation at affiliated Family Centers. To learn more about Families in Recovery, readers may visit www.pa-fsa.org.

Robotics Team from pg 1 and hoping to repeat last season’s success and maybe even go further,” said Dr. Timothy Tam, one of the team’s coaches and mentors. As part of the competition, FTC teams design, build, program and operate robots, which must be designed to play a floor game. Last season’s project, titled Relic Recovery, required the robots to use a claw to stack foam blocks, transfer relics and retrieve jewels. This season’s floor game is titled Rover Ruckus in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, which will be observed in 2019. “This year’s game is a lunar landing type of game,” explained Dr. Tam. “For the first time ever, one of the challenges is that the robot has the option to be attached to a lander and land onto the ground. yourself off the ground (again),” he added. Dr. Tam’s son, Nathan Tam, 14, noted that the extra lunar landing component is challenging. “Since this is the first year that they are requiring the lift off the ground, that is our biggest project and our highest priority,” he stated. Nathan explained that the team members are divided into different working groups. “Our first year we set the system up with three teams - marketing, programming and design,” he said. “We have three people on the marketing team this year, three on programming and four on design. Everyone sticks to their respective responsibilities.” Nathan said that having the different teams allows students to showcase their strongest talents. “I didn’t like design or mechanical stuff or programming, so I joined the marketing team,” he said. “The marketing team does the organizational side - everything from contacting sponsors to setting up outreach events and writing. The design team does the design and hands-on stuff, and the programming team does the coding and deals with logic and math.” He said that FTC program is

You play several matches and interact with other teams, give presentations and win awards,” he commented. “It’s a great experience even if you are not into engineering.” The team’s first competition will be on Saturday, Dec. 1, in Horsham. “That is our first qualifying competition for States,” Dr. Tam said, noting that the team will also take part in a scrimmage at Oxford Area High School on Saturday, Nov. 17. Dr. Tam, who is one of six coaches and mentors, credits the team success to the students, as

well as the combined efforts of all of the coaches, mentors and parents. “One of the things that sets our team apart is that we truly try to do everything as a team, and we try to teach our students how going through the process and learning together along the way is sometimes just as or even more important than the end results,” he stated. He added that the team has adopted a Bible verse from I Corinthians, which reads, in part, “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. … If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.”

Protecting Cars From Elements In a perfect world, all vehicle owners would be able to park their cars and trucks in garages. In such a world, automobiles would not be vulnerable to sun, storms, and other natural elements that, over time, can contribute to wear and tear. But many drivers cannot or choose not to park their cars in garages. Some are content to let their vehicles brave the elements, while others look for ways to protect their cars and trucks as much as possible. Drivers who count themselves among the latter group can take these simple steps to protect their cars and trucks from whatever Mother Nature has in store for them. Parking a car in the sun can leave the vehicle vulnerable to damage such as faded exterior paint. Parking in the shade can protect both the interior and exterior of a vehicle. Shaded areas protect upholstery and dashboards inside

the car from sun-induced fading, while also limiting the damage sun can cause to exterior paint. Faded paint may hurt the resale value of a vehicle, prompting prospective buyers to walk away or at least wonder if a vehicle with a faded exterior was well maintained. Washing and waxing a vehicle helps to minimize damage that is inevitable regardless of where drivers park their cars. Dirt and debris litter roadways, and, over time, cars can collect a large amount of these unwanted stowaways. If dirt and debris are not removed, they can cause long-term damage to vehicle exteriors. Washing and waxing a car can ensure its exterior looks good and reduce the likelihood of rust and other corrosion. Some drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages, may write off bird droppings as an annoying

yet harmless side effect of vehicle ownership. However, bird droppings are acidic, and if left to their unsightly devices, can cause permanent damage to vehicle paint. Tree sap is an equally formidable foe, potentially causing scratching because it can be very difficult to remove without spreading. Specially formulated sprays can help drivers remove bird droppings and sap from their vehicles. Drivers who have garages but use them to store things other than their vehicles can use car covers when parking their cars in their driveways. Covers protect cars from the elements and can be quickly and easily removed. Nature can be harsh on vehicles. Protecting automobiles from the elements should be a priority for drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages.

area restaurants into methane gas, which is then burned to generate energy. The digester produces enough energy to power the farm and provide a surplus, which the Hersheys sell back to the electric company. The digester also produces additional byproducts, including sterile bedding material for the farm’s cows and an odorless liquid fertilizer, which is spread onto the crop fields. In addition to running the 800-cow milking operation and raising crops on approximately 550 acres, the Hersheys operate their own milk hauling company in partnership with fellow dairy farmers Walt and Ellen Moore of Walmoore Holsteins. Off the farm, Duane and Marilyn are advocates for the dairy industry at the local, state and federal levels. Marilyn, who received the 2017 Dairy Woman of the Year recognition by the World Dairy Expo, writes a monthly column for Hoard’s Dairyman, serves on the National Dairy and Research Promotion Board and is chair of Dairy Management Inc., the nation’s dairy check-off board for research and promotion. The Chester County commissioners, along with the Agricultural Development Council, recently presented two agricultural awards at Ar-Joy Farms in Cochranville, including the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award and the Farmers of the Year Award. The event was also a dual celebration of National Farmer’s Day on Oct. 12 and the 30th year of the county’s agricultural award program. Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone and Terence Farrell presented the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award to Charles “Charlie” Graydus, an agricultural mechanics teacher and mentor at Octorara Area High School. Graydus started his teaching career in technical education at the Oxford Area School District in 1993. Six years later, he joined the agricultural mechanics department at Octorara, where he has been encouraging students to be their best and get involved in agriculture, regardless of whether or not they have grown up on a farm, for nearly the past two decades. Complementing his work as a teacher, Graydus has also served as the adviser for the school’s FFA chapter. Students from Octorara FFA win awards at the state level every year. Graydus also teaches a multi-day tractor and farm safety class for teenagers, sponsored by the Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau. In these roles, he has helped thousands of high school students develop their potential for leadership, personal growth and career success in the agriculture industry and beyond. Graydus and his wife, Carla, also raise a small herd of black Angus beef cattle and champion pumpkins at Hidden Well Farm in Elverson. The 2018 Farmers of the Year Award was presented to dairy farmers Duane and Marilyn Hershey of Ar-Joy Farms in Cochranville for the installation of cutting-edge methane digester technology on their farm, as well as for their advocacy work on behalf of the dairy industry both locally and nationwide. Although methane digesters are a more common sight on farms throughout Europe, the Hersheys’ digester is one of a handful in Pennsylvania. The Hersheys use the digester to convert cow manure, snack chip waste from a local potato chip company and used frying oil from
