PJP II To Host Silent Auction Fundraiser By Francine Fulton

Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) will hold a silent auction fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. in the St. Peter Celebration Center, 2835 Manor Ave., West Brandywine. This year’s event is being held at a new location, and it will offer online bidding for the first time. The auction will also incorporate a Monte Carlo Night, where attendees may play games to earn tickets that will enter them into a grand prize drawing. There will also be a catered buffet dinner. “The auction is normally every November, (but) we made the decision to take a year off (last year) and find some things that would be new and different and revitalize the auction,” explained Allison Garrity, who is co-chairing the

event with Mary Brady. “That’s when we decided on mobile bidding and bringing in Monte Carlo Night, having it catered and moving it to St. Peter’s.” Garrity reported that planning for this year’s event began in August 2017. “When we started to work on the auction, we attended some auctions in the area and all of them had mobile bidding,” she noted. After registering to attend, ticketholders will be emailed a personal bidding link. “They can click on the link to start bidding,” she said. “People will be able to view the auction items beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 14. (Those who) see something that they like can start bidding.” She said items on the auction block have been donated by local businesses as well as PJP II families. “Items will range from tickets to sporting events to experiences throughout Chester County, See Silent Auction pg 10

staff member Alan Lindsay of Chester Springs, senior warden, who has been leading worship services since the reopening of the church in 2014. Lindsay explained that Calvary Church lost its meeting place, so the decision was made to combine the two parishes. The churches already had a relationship; the Conshohocken church recently donated its baby grand piano for use at Saint Mary’s. “(Saint Mary’s) had been a parish years ago, and it closed. The bishop gave me permission to see if I could get a congregation going again, and that was nearly five years ago,” Lindsay explained. “Calvary Church sold their building five years ago, and the people they sold it to did not renew (the church’s) lease. The parish - which is not a building, but the people decided to relocate themselves here. The parish came here, (and) now we encompass both names.” McClellan explained that he served as the priest in charge at Calvary Church before being assigned to Saint Mary’s. “I was helping (at Calvary Church), and the priest there died,” said McClellan. “The people at Calvary asked the bishop if I could stay, so I was the priest in charge there for two and a half years.” McClellan said that he looks forward to serving the people in northern Chester County. “There is a lot of distance to travel; it takes me about 40 minutes to get here, but I am happy to do it,” McClellan stated. “I love this part of the country. It’s beautiful out here.” In his new role, McClellan said he would like to expand the church’s community outreach. Currently, the church is holding

The community is invited to visit the Church of Saint Mary at Calvary, located at 161 Warwick Road, Elverson, for Sunday worship at 10:15 a.m. The building is also open for tours every Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m. a food drive for the Coventry Food Pantry and is packing shoebox gifts for Operation Christmas Child. The church also has a sewing group that knits hats and scarves for people in need. “My goal is that I would like to see this parish serve the community (even more),” he stated. McClellan said he plans to introduce himself to the neighbors of the church, which is surrounded by historic homes in Warwick village. “We want people to know that this place is open, and now there is an assigned permanent priest,” McClellan added. Sunday worship at the Church of Saint Mary at Calvary is held

at 10:15 a.m. and is preceded by an Adult Forum, which includes a Bible study and discussion, at 9 a.m. A free continental breakfast is also available before and after the service. The church, which features a hand-carved wooden altar, is open for meditation and tours on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to stop by to view the building, which is listed on the National Historic Registry. The current church dates to 1843, when it was built to replace the original structure built in 1806. The church is a one-story, rectangular stuccoed fieldstone structure built in the Gothic Revival style.

MORGANTOWN - HONEY BROOK

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Morgantown/Honey Brook Edition -

Runners and walkers from the community are invited to take part in the Berks County Girls on the Run (GOTR) Fall 5K on Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Penn State Berks Campus, located at 1801 Broadcasting Road, Reading. The noncompetitive 5K run/walk is open to people of all ages and fitness levels. At the fifth annual event, 332 GOTR program participants in grades three to eight from across Berks County will finish a 5K, the culminating event after completing a 10-week GOTR youth development program held at their schools. A local GOTR team is from Daniel Boone Area Middle School. Online registration will be open at www.gotrberks.org through Wednesday, Nov. 14, and in-person registration will be conducted at the event beginning at 8 a.m. The 5K start time will be at 9:30 a.m. The course route, which is fully enclosed on the campus to provide for the safety of the participants, will loop through the campus along paved walkways and grass-covered athletic fields. There will be two water stations along the course, and cheer teams will be on hand to encourage the girls and other 5K participants. Performing prior to the start of the 5K will be local country singer/songwriter Stephanie Grace, 21, of Douglassville, who has opened shows for artists including Taylor Swift, Scotty McCreery, Hunter Hayes and the Charlie Daniels Band, among others. Stephanie has released two EPs, recorded in Nashville. Since releasing her single “Loser” in 2013, Stephanie has conducted

anti-bullying assemblies at multiple elementary, middle and high schools throughout Pennsylvania, including in Berks County. In addition, there will be a vehicle at the event for program participants to decorate with inspiring messages. The vehicle will then be utilized at the start of the race as a pace car to kick off the 5K. Other activities will include a free photo booth, a free “happy hair” sparkle hair station and more. A disc jockey will provide music throughout the morning. GOTR is a physical activitybased, positive youth development program for girls. Participants meet after school for 90-minute sessions twice per week in teams of 10 to 20 girls with their volunteer coaches, completing 20 sessions over a period of 10 weeks. “We have a curriculum that we get from Girls on the Run International,” explained Sandra Krafczek, executive director of GOTR of Berks County. “It is very structured. They teach the girls to feel confident about themselves and make healthy choices.” Other topics include making friends, having accountability, resisting peer pressure, developing strength of character and more. Each session also incorporates physical exercise as the girls prepare for the 5K. However, girls are not required to run the course. “They can run, skip or walk it. It’s all about teaching them to set a goal and achieve a goal,” Krafczek explained. “Some of them will never be runners. Walking a 5K is a big accomplishment, and we will celebrate that. In our lessons we talk about

Safety Tips For Senior Drivers

Ladies’ Night Out

Aging can take its toll on drivers, prompting such drivers’ families to feel as if their loved ones’ ability to safely operate motor vehicles has been compromised. However, many seniors can still safely operate motor vehicles, and those who do can take steps to ensure they are as safe as possible behind the wheel. Seniors should avoid driving on days when aches and pains are strong. Aches and pains are common side effects of aging, and seniors know that some days are better than others. Seniors’ ability to control their vehicles may

be compromised on days when stiffness, aches, or pains seem particularly strong, so it is best to avoid driving during these times. Fatigue may set in on days when aches and pains require extra effort to perform relatively simple tasks, and drivers of all ages should avoid driving while tired. Few seniors may look forward to their medical checkups, but visits to the doctor can reveal issues that can help seniors be safer on the road. Seniors are encouraged to schedule routine vision exams so eyeglass prescriptions are always up-to-date.

In addition, seniors should discuss hearing screenings with their physicians so they can ensure they can always hear sirens and other motorists while on the road. Great strides have been made in regard to helping people with fading hearing hear better, and seniors would be wise to take advantage of such advancements, which include hearing aids that can be connected to smartphones. Seniors should familiarize themselves with medication side effects. Whether they do so temporarily or permanently, many See Drivers pg 5

seniors take medications, and every medication comes with side effects. When filling a new prescription, people should carefully read the dosage and description label to ensure that it is safe to drive while taking the medicine. People should also take note of how they feel when taking a new prescription, avoiding driving if the medication makes them feel fatigued or drowsy or affects their motor functions. If the side effects of a new prescription are making it difficult to safely operate a vehicle, people should discuss potential alternatives with their physician. Driving in inclement weather, during rush hour, and at night may make drivers uncomfortable, regardless of their age. But such conditions can be especially dangerous for aging drivers whose vision and reaction times might be fading. Seniors who avoid driving in harsh conditions and heavy traffic may be more comfortable behind the wheel, thereby reducing their risk of accident or injury. Seniors need not give up their driver’s licenses at the first sign of aging. But adjusting certain behaviors and exercising extra caution can help these men and women stay safe behind the wheel.

Salvation Army Receives Grant A $750,000 grant was awarded to the Salvation Army of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware to support the Pathway of Hope initiative. This grant will cover program costs in York, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Reading, and Carlisle. It will also allow the Salvation Army to launch Pathway of Hope programs in Boyertown, Norristown, Pottstown, and Levittown starting in January 2019. The Pathway of Hope initiative focuses on the long-term goal of self-sufficiency of impoverished families, intended to break the cycle of crisis and intergenerational poverty. Families who are motivated and committed to take the necessary steps to improve their lives will work with a Salvation Army case manager for social and spiritual support. They will also be connected with services for jobs, health, housing, child care, education, and legal services. The Salvation Army of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware’s Pathway of Hope initiative is currently assisting families in 17 communities throughout the two regions. To date, it has served 162 families, including 232 adults and 394 children.

Tips For Sharing The Road Safely

The wedding of Molly Gerwig and Timothy Schwemler took place on Aug. 24 at The Inn of the Perry Cabin in St. Michaels, Md. The bride graduated from Bishop Shanahan High School in 2012 and Mount St. Mary’s University in 2016. The groom graduated from Bishop Shanahan High School in 2012 and Mount St. Mary’s University in 2016. The maid of honor was Megan Gerwig, sister of the bride. Bridesmaids were Emily Scott, Emily Warren, Kendra Miliken, Kayla Dettinger, and Sara Mulhern. Serving as best man was Alex Karlovitz. Groomsmen were Jerad Zaccarelli, John Hiesler, and Matt Russo. The couple resides in Exton.

The country’s roadways are for all to enjoy. Tens of millions of cars take to the roads every day, but they are not the only mode of transportation allowed on the road. Cyclists and pedestrians also make use of streets when sidewalks or biking paths are unavailable. Although biking and walking are inherently safe activities for millions of people per year, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians can all take steps to make roads safer for everyone. Everyone should follow the rules of the road. Whether riding a bike or driving a motor vehicle, the rules of the road are the same. That means heeding traffic signals, signage, right-of-way, speed limits, and more.

18th century. Visitors will experience the times of Conrad Weiser, ask questions at a tavern scene, and talk to Weiser’s friends staying on the property. There will be 18th-century music, and Darius Puff will provide Native American campfire stories.

at all times when behind the wheel. Motorists should be focused on the road at all times, avoiding distractions such as smartphones and in-vehicle entertainment systems. Such devices can dramatically reduce motorists’ reaction times, greatly increasing the risk of accident. Drivers should slow down when cyclists, runners, and other pedestrians are nearby. Drivers should pass safely and give room. They should not pass too closely when driving near cyclists and pedestrians. Drivers should always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Whether driving, riding a bicycle, or walking, everyone should work together to share roads safely. For more information, readers may visit www.nhtsa.gov.

DMVA Shares News For Veterans The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) appreciates the sacrifices made by all veterans and wants to see that everyone

leaving the military receives every benefit they earned with their service to America. To prepare for the future, veterans are encouraged to register with the DMVA, apply for federal health care benefits, and safeguard important military paperwork. Taking these steps when transitioning back to civilian life may help to make accessing military benefits easier going forward. Veterans can sign up for the DMVA Veterans Registry at www.register.dmva.pa.gov. In addition to veterans, family members and people who work with veterans can sign up for the registry to receive helpful information about programs, benefits, and services. Information about how to apply for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care benefits can be found by going to www.va.gov/HEALTH BENEFITS/apply/. It is also important for veterans to safeguard their DD214/215 and other military

documents by filing them at their county courthouse of record. The DD-214 is an official document that contains the information needed to verify military service and help to avoid verification issues later in life. The DD-215 is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD-214. Additionally, any National Guard member who has not been ordered on active duty will not receive a DD-214. The discharge documents for National Guard members are the NGB-22 and NGB-23. The easiest way to manage military documents is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately upon leaving the military. However, veterans who need help should never hesitate to contact the DMVA for assistance with searching for any military documents. Anyone needing assistance from the DMVA to locate their DD-214/215 or other military documentation may contact 717861-8910 or ra-req@pa.gov.

When using the roads, people should avoid alcohol use. Alcohol impairs motor skills, which are necessary to walk and operate cars and bicycles safely. Many accidents and fatalities on the roads can be traced to alcohol consumption. Individuals should not drink and drive or drink and ride. Pedestrians who need to walk heavily trafficked areas would be smart to limit their alcohol consumption as well. Pedestrians and cyclists can make themselves more visible to motorists in various ways. Wearing bright-colored, reflective gear when walking or riding and installing reflective lights on bicycles are ways to be more visible. Drivers should remain alert

Stitchers and non-stitchers alike are invited to join the needlework ministry at St. Peter’s Church in the Great Valley, Malvern. The group, which meets on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon, creates lap blankets, prayer shawls, chemo caps, scarves and hats for school children and more. Those who are unable to knit or crochet may help out by assisting with labeling and packaging duties. In conjunction with its monthly meeting, the needlework ministry at St. Peter’s held an open house on Nov. 3, during which attendees enjoyed a continental breakfast and learned about the group from co-leaders Brenda Grove and Betsy Church. Grove noted that the ministry has been meeting for more than 12 years. It began as prayer shawl ministry, but the effort has grown to include other handmade items. Everyone is welcome, including those who do not attend St. Peter’s. “We have people who are not members who come on a regular basis, she said. Each meeting starts with a prayer, followed by announcements. “Then we knit, crochet and chat, Grove said. With the exception of the scheduled open houses, the meetings generally end with a light lunch. Items that the group makes were on display at the open house. “We make prayer shawls; scarves for the military, which are distributed through Operation Gratitude; and chemo caps and scarves for (patients at) the Chester County Hospital. Pink (scarves) are for cancer patients, and red are for heart patients, Grove told the group. “We also make school scarves and hats for the St. James School, an Episcopal charter school in Philadelphia. The group recently donated 30 caps and 15 scarves to the school, which provides children in need with counseling, tutoring and mentoring. “They have an Advent celebration where their parents can shop for their kids (free of charge), Grove explained. “They set up tables with different gift items that the parents can (select), so those (items) will go there. Christening blankets, which are packaged with a book of prayers, are presented to the parents of children who are baptized at St. Peter’s. The Rev. Abigail Crozier Nestelhutt, St. Peter’s rector, was on hand at the open house to report that families are grateful for the christening blankets. “Tomorrow I am baptizing an infant boy and his mother, she told the group. “Those mean so much to people. When we give them the baby blankets, you can just tell how much people are touched by that. Prayer shawls and lap blankets go to hospitalized veterans, seniors served by Episcopal church housing, those in hospice and homeowners who have been helped through the Good Works program, among others. Organization Seeks Volunteers, Furniture Donations By Francine Fulton

The Community Warehouse Project (CWP) of Chester County, a nonprofit organization that collects and redistributes donated furniture and household goods to people in need, is celebrating its one-year anniversary. Looking back to the project’s formation in November 2017, Glenda Brion, executive director, reports that the effort has been a great success. “We have served about 150 families this year, which is amazing,” she said. “They came for beds, sofas, coffee tables and dressers. I knew the need was tremendous, but I wasn’t sure how much we would be able to accomplish with all volunteers, but it’s working.”

Brion explained that individuals and families that are seeking items are referred to the agency by Chester County social service organizations such as the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County; Children, Youth and Families; and Friends Association for Care and Protection of Children. CWP maintains a large warehouse in the Downingtown area in a space that is provided free of charge by the E. Kahn Development Corporation. CWP works in partnership with the Rotary Club of West Chester. West Chester University students are also involved in the program. “Students from the West Chester University Center for Community Solutions volunteer and designed our logo,” Brion said. “The Friars’ Society

their hands won’t let them because of arthritis (or other ailments),” noted Grove. “People who can’t knit or crochet have found new ways to help.” Those who want to learn to knit or crochet can also join the group for instruction; supplies are provided. The group also accepts yarn donations. The next scheduled meeting of

the ministry will be on Saturday, Dec. 1. St. Peter’s is located at 2475 St. Peter’s Road, Malvern. For more information about the needlework ministry, readers may call the church office at 610644-2261, search for “Needlework - St. Peter’s Church in the Great Valley” on Facebook or email kmitters@stpetersgv.org.

Community Warehouse Project of Chester County board members and volunteers, including members of the Rotary Club of West Chester, recently celebrated the organization’s one-year anniversary of providing furniture and household goods to people in need. out of West Chester University are young men who come and help us move furniture and deliver donations.” For those in need of furniture, a case manager, social worker or sponsor must complete a form on their behalf at www.communitywarehouseproject.com. The client and the case manager then come to pick out the furniture at the warehouse. Items needed by CWP include living room furniture, tables, lamps, nightstands, bunk beds and linens, as well as housewares, such as dishes, plates, silverware, pots and pans. Donations must be clean and in good condition. Items that CWP will not accept include clothing, televisions and large appliances. Brion said that the organization is particularly in need of single beds with bed frames. “We never have enough single beds,” she said. “I know there are a lot of people out there who would be willing to buy a bed for people.” Those who have furniture to donate are asked to contact the agency in advance. “There is a place on the website for people who want to donate furniture,” explained Brion. “You include a picture so that way we know what we are getting.” Approved furniture can be dropped off on the third Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The next scheduled furniture drop-off event will be on Nov. 17. Brion encourages real estate agents to let homeowners who are moving know about the option of donating unwanted furniture to CWP. “Realtors have reached out to their clients who are downsizing,” she explained. “People take what they need to move onto the next place, and we will get the rest of the furniture. It gives them a place to put it, and all (donations) are put to good use.” Brion said that as the effort grows, so does the need for volunteers. “I can always use help in the warehouse straightening, rearranging things and labeling things,” she noted. She would also love to have someone donate or loan a delivery truck to the organization. “Someone with a box truck who

is willing to drive the truck once a month would be nice, or if we had a truck available, I could find a volunteer to drive the truck,” she said. “Right now, we have to rent a truck, but the Friars do the heavy lifting. It’s a real challenge for us to keep up with deliveries.” For more information about CWP, readers may call 484-4734360, visit www.communityware houseproject.com or search for “Community Warehouse Project of Chester County” on Facebook. Pictured on front: Frank Stearns (left) and Joe Morrissey are just two of the volunteers who help move furniture and mattresses for the Community Warehouse Project of Chester County. The organization is seeking additional volunteers and furniture donations.

People who do not knit or crochet, like Nancy Buford, assist with duties such as packaging items made by the needlework ministry at St. Peter’s Church in the Great Valley, Malvern.

PLCB Announces Poster Contest Earlier this year, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) unveiled a new alcohol education campaign called “Know When, Know How. This campaign teaches parents how to start a conversation with their children about the dangers of underage drinking. In an effort to continue the dialogue about the dangers of underage drinking, the PLCB is encouraging students from across the commonwealth to participate in the 27th annual Alcohol Awareness Poster Contest. The contest is open to all Pennsylvania students in kindergarten through 12th grade, including those who are homeschooled or in private or parochial schools. Students may enter through their schools, clubs, or Scout troops, or they may enter individually. Entries must feature a clear no-use message about underage

drinking and may be created using any artistic medium. Students are encouraged to use positive messages and images, such as the benefits of being alcohol-free or alternatives to underage drinking. Each year, approximately 50 posters are selected by a panel of judges for recognition. Each artist who creates a selected poster will be notified of his or her accomplishment and invited to attend a recognition ceremony in Harrisburg in April 2019, which is Alcohol Awareness Month. Several students will receive $50, and one student from each grade will receive $25. Some of the winning designs may be reproduced in various formats and distributed across Pennsylvania. Registration and race packet pickup will be available from 7:45 to 9:20 a.m. on Nov. 22 in the camp’s dining hall. The fun run will begin at 9:10 a.m., followed by the 5K race at 9:40 a.m. Event T-shirts will be given out on race day while supplies last. Online registration will be available through Wednesday, Nov. 21, at www.telhaicamp. org/events/turkey-bowl-run. Participants may also register at www.secondwindtiming.com by choosing Race Calendar and searching for “Tel Hai Camp Turkey Bowl Race - Honey Brook on Nov. 22. The 5K race will be professionally timed, and trophies will be awarded to the top overall female and male finishers of the 5K. Medals will be given to the top three finishers in 13 age groups. In 2017, the top overall male

winner of the 5K was Kris Lizins of Honey Brook with a time of 16 minutes, 15 seconds, and the top overall female winner was Hadassah Stoltzfus of Honey Brook, with a time of 20:34. “Last year, we had 75 finishers in the 1-mile fun run and 456 finishers in the 5K race, said Gregory. All participants will be cheered on by the Tel Hai turkey mascot. “The turkey wishes (his true identity) to remain anonymous, Gregory added. “He’ll be back this year and wants to keep the mystery of his identity going. Gregory said that the Thanksgiving event has become a tradition with area families, many of whom bring out-of-town visitors. “Besides the Honey Brook area, I know we have runners from the Downingtown area, Gap/Oxford area and New Holland area, he pointed out. The Thanksgiving Day run was started in 1992 by former camp program director Buzz Tyson, who is now director of the Lighthouse Youth Center in Oxford. The Turkey Bowl is sponsored by local businesses. Proceeds from the event are used to benefit Tel Hai Camp and Retreat, a nonprofit Christian camp that is a member of the Christian Camping and Conference Association. The camp is located along Beaver Dam Road, 1.5 miles east of Route 10. The GPS address is 31 Lasso Drive, Honey Brook. For more information, readers may contact Gregory at 610-2733969 or bruce@telhaicamp.org or visit www.telhaicamp.org or www.facebook.com/TelHaiCamp Retreat.

The PLCB is again providing a sample lesson plan, which educators are encouraged to use in guiding and teaching students about the dangers of underage drinking.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has modernized its online Customer Care Center www.customercare.penndot.go v - to make it easier to report concerns on state-maintained roadways with new mapping capabilities, optional photo uploads, and a mobile-friendly interface. nearly 45,000 concerns submitted this year. More than 96 percent of those concerns have been resolved. Motorists are asked to be as specific as possible when providing locations of concerns. Motorists should report the county, municipality, street name, and state route number, which can be found on small black and white signs posted along state highways. In addition, a description of any familiar landmarks would be helpful for PennDOT to locate the problem area. Maintenance concerns will be corrected as soon as possible.

Emergency road repairs, such as road wash-outs, are handled on a top-priority basis. Concerns may also be reported through 800-FIXROAD (800-349-7623), though the number should not be used to report traffic accidents, disabled vehicles, or other emergencies. Motorists should continue to call 911 to report these types of emergencies. Customers with questions or concerns related to driver or vehicle services should visit www.dmv.pa.gov. For concerns related to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, readers should visit www.paturnpike.com.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 45 million people in the United States wear contact lenses. Many consumers may not be aware that contact lenses are medical devices and are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, the FDA states that contact lenses are not over-the-counter (OTC) devices and companies that sell them as such are misbranding the device and violating Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations by selling contact lenses without having a valid prescription. Prevent Blindness, a nonprofit eye health organization, recommends several tips for contact lens care. Individuals should always visit an eye doctor to be fitted for contact lenses before
