SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL XXXI • NO 41

Shopping small this holiday season BY FRANCINE FULTON

Diners enjoy a free homemade Thanksgiving meal complete with turkey and all the trimmings and homemade pie for dessert.

Volunteers will serve the buffet-style meal in the church’s fellowship hall.

Church to dish up free Thanksgiving meal veryone from seniors and young families to those who live alone and have no relatives in the area is invited to attend a free community Thanksgiving meal at Hopewell Church, 2286 Hopewell Road, Elverson, on Thursday, Nov. 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition, those who are unable to attend in person and who live within 5 miles of the church may have a free meal delivered. The event, being held for the third time at the church, is being organized by congregation member Misty Stoltzfus, who started the outreach to honor her father, who passed away on Thanksgiving several years ago. She emphasized that people of all ages are invited to attend, including

E

local college students who may not be going home for the holiday. “We fed around 100 people last year, which included members of the community, volunteers and (those receiving) takeout meals,” said Stoltzfus. “This year, I am hoping that it will be even more people.” This year’s menu will include turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans and corn, cranberry sauce and rolls and beverages with homemade pumpkin and apple pie for dessert. The buffet-style meal will be served in the church’s fellowship hall. “People can drop in anytime,” Stoltzfus noted. The food will be prepared by local chef Jamie Francis, who comes to the church earlier in the week to prepare the turkeys. The turkeys

are donated to the church by the Twin Valley Food Pantry, where Stoltzfus is a volunteer. The potatoes are donated by Mast Farm - Paul Mast is a church member - and apple cider is provided by Weaver’s Orchard. Church members contribute baked goods, rolls and butter. Local farmers donated corn, which was frozen fresh this summer. “We all went to church and shucked 200 to 300 ears of corn and processed them,” Stoltzfus said. Leftover food from the dinner goes to the Hope Rescue Mission in Reading, which serves homeless men in Berks County. “The ingredients are used to make turkey casseroles,” Stoltzfus noted. The meal not only benefits local residents but is designed for people

looking for volunteer opportunities. “You don’t have to volunteer the whole time. You can sit and eat as well,” Stoltzfus said. “Some people just want to volunteer, and then they go home and eat with their families.” “The people that come are really appreciative,” she added. “There are not that many places that do a free Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving. It’s nice to have it.” Those who plan to attend the event are asked to register by Sunday, Nov. 19. To register or order a meal to be delivered, call the church office at 610-286-6308, email stoltzfusmisty4@gmail.com or visit www.hopewellchurch.org, click on “Events” and choose “Thanksgiving Outreach” on the calendar.

Small businesses are at the heart of local communities. What better way to celebrate the diversity, uniqueness and creativity of independent, local businesses than by supporting them during the busiest shopping season of the year? Shops in local towns offer many gift ideas that are one-of-a-kind and generally feature a local flair, as independent businesses tend to offer products and services that are reflective of the customers and the community they serve. They also offer quality customer service because they meet shoppers face to face. “Supporting your neighborhood businesses makes sense in so many ways. Besides saving gas and time, you are putting food on the tables of your neighbors and friends,” said Esther Prosser, mayor of Elverson. “Stopping in to purchase locally is a great way to connect with your community, and that personal connection is what makes life fun.” “Small business has been and continues to be the backbone of the American economy, so it is important that we all find time to patronize and do business with our local businesses,” added Jim Gerlach, president and CEO of the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance. “If they do not succeed,

Chip timing for the 5K will be provided by Second Wind Race Timing. The 1-mile children’s fun run for youths age 12 and under will stay on the main grounds of the camp. Adults who would like to run with their children can participate at no charge. First-place trophies will be awarded to the overall female and male runners of the 5K, and medals will be given to the top three finishers in various age groups. Children who complete the fun run will receive a finisher’s medal. “Last year, we had 352 finishers in the 5K face and 77 finishers in the 1-mile children’s fun run,” Gregory reported. The Unruh family of Morgantown, including Kristy and Austin and their sons, Hudson and Marshall, have been participating in the event annually. Last year, Kristy enjoyed the fun run with her sons. She has also run the 5K in past years. “We are longterm supporters of the camp, and we love to volunteer or run,” said Kristy. Kristy pointed out that she has been attending the Turkey Bowl since 2007, when she was a teenager. Now, her sons look forward to the event. “The boys like to see the participants (who) dress up like turkeys and Pilgrims,” she noted. “We have seen every form of weather but there are always good sports that are ready to run, even with costumes.” Other regular participants include Caleb Smoker of Elverson, who competed in the 5K last year with his son, Caiden, 7. W hen a yellow Owen J. Roberts (OJR) School District bus pulled up at the North Coventry Food Pantry on a recent Saturday, it was not filled with students. Rather, the bus was loaded with nonperishable food donations collected by OJR students as part of the district’s annual Make a Difference Day Food Drive. Helping to unload and sort the donations at the pantry were members of the OJR High School wrestling team. As part of the annual event, students gathered donations for the food pantry from Oct. 16 through Oct. 27.

On the final day of the drive, the Make a Difference Day school bus traveled between each campus in the district to collect the gathered donations, including the district elementary schools and the middle school and high school. “(The students) get so excited when we show up with that bus,” said middle school teacher Kira Marks, who has been organizing the food drive since 2014. “Last year, we were just coming back after COVID; this year we had significantly more (donations) than last year.” Students were provided information about the food pantry, which provides food and household goods to families and individuals in need who reside in the OJR School District. “We talked about what needs to be donated, how many families are helped and how important it is,” noted Marks. Special incentives were offered to encourage students to donate items. “The middle school Leo Club runs a pie-in-the-face contest, where students can bring items to donate and they vote for who they would like to see ‘pied,’” Marks explained. “The top three teachers with the most votes get pie in the face. It brings in a lot of donations and it’s a lot of fun.” Additionally, the names of students who brought in donations were put in a drawing to win either a free pass for all home athletic games or a week of parking (for older students) in OJR High School assistant principal Eric Wentzel’s administrator parking spot.

Helping to load donations are OJR Middle School teacher Kira Marks (second from left) and OJR High School students (from left) Anai Hicks, Caidyn Rome and Ronald Kanyangarara.

Nonperishable food items were also collected during the district’s annual Roberts Education Association (REA) Trick or Treat Night on Oct. 26. Different groups at the various schools helped with the effort, as well as staff members, including Rachel Hoffman, the OJR High school attendance secretary, and Jen Scott from the Middle School Leo Club. Next year, Marks would like to see the effort opened up to the public. “I have been

discussing within my building ways to get the public involved by having drop-off boxes at different stores or locations or at the middle school or high school,” she stated. “ We are trying to make (the food drive) bigger and better.” The North Coventry Food Pantry is located at 692 W. Schuylkill Road (Route 724), Unit 1, Pottstown. For more information, including volunteer opportunities or how to hold a food drive, visit www.coventryfoodpantry.com or www.facebook.com/coventry foodpantry.
