Afterbeing involved with pet rescue for eight years, Twin Valley High School alumna Calla Gibson of Elverson decided to form her own organization, Calla’s Critter Rescue.
The goal of the rescue, which formed in May of 2021, is to provide foster care for unwanted cats and kittens until their forever homes can be found.
Calla, who is the head veterinary technician at the Affordable Spay and Neuter Clinic and Pet Care, also works parttime at Diane’s Discount Pet Supplies and Adoption Center. Both facilities are situated together on Route 100 in Pottstown.
“I started at Diane’s in my freshman year of high school and I helped her out with rescue, so I decided to open my own rescue and get donations and support from the community because (the population of unwanted feral cats and kittens) is a huge problem,” Calla stated.
Calla is being assisted in the rescue by her mom, Stephanie Gibson, who is a pet groomer and a foster. “My mom and I are both vet techs, so we know what we are dealing with. We work closely with my boss, Dr. Steve (Silberman), who is a veterinarian,” said Calla. Calla noted that she worked as an intern with Silberman while still in high school.
Currently, Calla is seeking volunteers to serve as fosters, as well as
adopters who want to bring a cat or kitten into their home. An adoption application and a foster application are both available at www.callascritterrescue.com.
Calla stays in contact with the families that adopt cats and kittens to make sure the match is working. “I love updates and I love people who ask me questions because I am
pretty knowledgeable,” she said.
Donations of food, cat litter and monetary contributions are also being accepted. As a fundraiser, the rescue is currently holding a sale of Tshirts that feature the rescue’s logo.
Calla recently completed her education at Delaware Valley University with a small animal science major and large animal science minor.
Her future goals include having her own facility. “I plan to go to vet school, so I want to have the rescue connected to my vet office and a connected cat café. My mom’s business will tie into it with her grooming,” she said.
For more information about Calla’s Critter Rescue, to view photos of adoptable cats and kittens, to make a donation or to purchase a T-shirt, visit the previously mentioned website or www.facebook.com/callascritterrescue.

About 150 participants took part in the ninth annual Owen J. Roberts (OJR) Celebrity Run101 on Nov. 5, which included a 5K race and a 1-mile walk. The event took place in the Wildcat Stadium and throughout the school campus at OJR High School in Pottstown. Attendees were encouraged to dress as their favorite celebrity. On hand at the event were Super
Mario, a Teletubby and representatives from Progressive and State Farm insurances. Prizes were awarded for the best costumes.
The Run101 Committee included OJR High School teachers Megan Harpold and Meg Wrubel; Ryan Monaghan, OJR supervisor of instruction and language arts; and Emmanuel Toussaint, district health and wellness coordinator.
Among those who took part in the 5K were members of RUN 101, running clubs that are offered at each of the OJR School District elementary schools - West Vincent, East Vincent, East Coventry, North Coventry and French Creek. RUN 101 is a fitness incentive program for boys and girls in grades four through six. The after-school activity, led by OJR staff members, is designed to promote a fun, non-competitive introduction to the sport of running with the goal that the activity becomes a lifetime exercise. The event is being organized by congregation member Misty Stoltzfus, who started the outreach to honor her father, who passed away on Thanksgiving several years ago.
“We fed about 150 people last year, but that included the volunteers and people from the church,” said Stoltzfus, noting that residents of Hopewell Manor senior rental community participated in the event. “Hopewell Manor was very thankful to get meals. Some (residents) came to eat here, and some (meals) we delivered. (We provided) a good service. It was nice to deliver meals to people who can’t get out.”
Leftover food from the dinner goes to the Hope Rescue Mission in Reading, which serves homeless men in Berks County. “We had a lot of extra food, but they were happy at Hope Rescue because they make turkey layered casserole for the residents,” Stoltzfus noted.
This year’s menu will include turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans and corn, cranberry sauce, rolls and beverages. Homemade pumpkin pie will be served for dessert.
The food will be prepared by local chef Jamie Francis, who comes to the church several days in advance to do prep work. “He uses heavy cream in the mashed potatoes; they are really creamy,” said Stoltzfus.
The meal will be served in the church’s fellowship hall, which will
be decorated for the fall season. “It will be buffet-style. You don’t have to get there at 11. People can drop in anytime,” Stoltzfus pointed out.
The dinner is open to people of all ages, including those who are alone for the holiday, senior citizens, young families and local residents who may not have relatives nearby.
“It really is for anyone who wants to have someplace to go for Thanksgiving,” Stoltzfus said. “Some of the

with the goal of taking part in the culminating 5K event.
“For many of the students, it was the first time they participated in a 5K,” said Wrubel.
Also featured was music provided by DJ JoJo Lorman of Entertainment Engineering Plus, which was meant to encourage the runners and walkers, as well as face painting. “Mirror Me Productions had a fun photo booth to bring out the celebrity in everyone,” Wrubel noted.
The event was designed to raise money for the OJR High School Best Buddies Club, which has a goal of “promoting social inclusion amongst students with disabilities and typically developing students.”
As part of the program, club members are paired with students with disabilities, who then enjoy social activities both at school and in the community. A pizza party is held at the beginning of the school year to mark the start of the program.

BY FRANCINE FULTON
Historic Poole Forge will host a 24hour online auction on Friday, Nov. 18.
Items that will be available include various classes and services donated by local businesses, as well as the featured item - a community quilt.
This year’s quilt has been created with an intricate design of owls. “Every year at Poole Forge we do a community quilt. All the different patches are made by members of the community,” explained Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. “Last year, we got the idea to do owls. I brought some patterns and sent them out into the community. It was really challenging; you can see from the design. This year was special because normally we do something much simpler.”
Community members were encouraged to create squares to contribute to the quilt. “It took a lot of work. The ladies all got together in September and quilted it,” Ekdahl noted.
Also available for bidding will be a bird feeder made in the design of Poole Forge’s covered bridge. “The covered bridge bird feeder was made by Larry Good, a talented carpenter and volunteer at Poole Forge, as well as a Caernarvon township employee. It was made from the original wood from the covered bridge when we replaced boards a few years ago,” Eckdahl explained.
Other auction items will include a hot air balloon flight provide by Air Ventures Hot Balloon Flights, Glenmoore; a quilted owl pillow; spinning and weaving lessons by the Lancaster Spinners and Weavers; tickets to the Mother’s Day Brunch at Historic Poole Forge mansion in May 2023; a weekend stay at the Inn at Twin Linden, donated by innkeeper Kyra Scalea; a sauerkraut-making class, donated by Deb Martin, Poole Forge board
member and volunteer; a gift certificate for Inn & Spa at Intercourse Village, donated by innkeeper Carl Kosko; a natural dye workshop offered by Winona Quigley from Green Matters Natural Dye Company in White Horse; a half-hour massage from Churchtown Therapeutic Massage; and a photography portrait session by Mark Usciak, local photographer.
“Bob Lauffer, one of our Caernarvon Township supervisors, former ag and FFA teacher at Garden Spot and now president of the PA Scholastic 3D Archery Board, will offer archery lessons,” Ekdahl noted. “A nature program (has been donated) by Phil Whitman, board member and former science teacher at Garden Spot, who now volunteers at the Philadelphia Zoo and gives nature programs in the community.”

Over 700 people joined the Chester County commissioners and the district attorney in Exton Park on the morning of Oct. 8 to run, walk and cheer on participants of the sixth annual Chester County Color 5K. Of those present at the event, more than 600 people took part in the timed race.
The event, initiated by Chester County Commissioner Michelle Kichline in 2016, raises funds to combat opioid and heroin addiction in Chester County. Over five years, the Color 5K raised nearly $200,000 for the county’s Community Outreach Prevention and Education (COPE) program, which addresses many aspects of substance use disorder. Organizers anticipate that a further $85,000 will be raised this year through sponsorship support, led by
the Color 5K presenting sponsor the John R. Gailey III and JoEllen Berger Charitable Fund.
The COPE program provides 24/7 emergency room support for overdose survivors and their families at all hospitals in Chester County. It also offers overdose prevention information and outreach to first responders, hospital staff, family members and friends, as well as expedited admission into detox and a review of all treatment options for overdose survivors who agree to treatment. In her comments before the start of the Color 5K, Kichline noted that due to COPE, more than 880 people have received treatment after an overdose.
During the Color 5K, many organizations that support drug and alcohol information and recovery services in Chester County set up displays in Exton Park and offered information and advice. A supply of the medication naloxone was also available to those requesting it.
Color blasters heralded the start of the Chester County Color 5K, and color stations along the route doused participants with brightly colored cornstarch.
