Tel Hai Camp invites local residents to “burn calories, not your turkey” during the annual Turkey Bowl to be held on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 28. The event will feature a 5K race and a 1-mile fun run for children. “This is our 28th year for the race, and we are looking forward to another great year,” said Bruce Gregory, camp director. The 5K (3.1-mile) cross-country race will take runners through the camp and around the lake. The course includes paved, gravel and grassy paths. Parents may run alongside their children at no charge.
Registration and race packet pickup will be held from 7:45 to 9:20 a.m. on Nov. 28 in the camp’s dining hall. As the head of her law firm, she is overseeing expansion of the firm’s West Chester offices to meet client demand, just a year after expansion and relocation of the firm’s Greater Wilmington office. She also focuses on the firm’s mentorship program for young lawyers, including young women in the law. Pinsky was the recipient of the March of Dimes Health Award. Pinsky joined the medical staff of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Chester County Hospital in 1996, beginning as a pediatric hospitalist caring for children who required emergency care or hospital admission. Over the last 24 years, Pinsky’s role has evolved. Most recently, Pinsky has expanded her role into clinical quality as the chief quality officer, overseeing the work of keeping patients safe while delivering state-of-the-art care in the community. The Public Service Award was presented to Evans. Evans has carried on her father’s legacy by becoming the executive director of CHC, which provides safe, affordable housing and supportive services to seniors and special needs populations.
She has been with the company for 20 years and has governed all aspects of the management team as well as created a strong social service department. Evans leads her management team by recognizing the individual needs and strengths of each CHC resident and focusing on enhancing quality of life and joyful experiences. 2018, Partners in Outreach served more than 3,000 children in Chester County and surrounding areas. Its literacy campaign has provided more than 25,000 books to schools and organizations in and around Chester County. With the support of more than 300 volunteers, Partners in Outreach has provided more than 1,200 new Easter outfits, 1,000 Easter baskets, 260 winter coats and more than 800 summer camp bags filled with new bathing suits, towels, flip-flops and water bottles. Additionally, 70 struggling readers received one-on-one tutoring in four Chester County elementary schools. Parsons’ goal is to expand the projects within Partners in Outreach to reach more individuals and organizations in need. Knapp was presented with the Business Award. Terre Hill Mayor Bob Rissler knows that it takes cooperation among a number of parties to reach a mutually beneficial goal. “We all have a big stake in water quality,” said Rissler, who listed residences and farms among area properties that are affected by water issues. “We all need to protect our water supply.” Carolyn Hildebrand, manager of West Cocalico Township, said that for farmers, both economic performance and farming legacy are important issues. “People want their children to farm, but what are they leaving for them?” she asked. “Is the soil going to be healthy or not?” To address such issues, a number of municipalities have joined forces to offer a Farmers Field Day on Monday, Dec. 9, at the Shady Maple Banquet Center 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the program will end by 3:45 p.m. Coffee and doughnuts and a buffet lunch will be included. “We will have speakers talk about various ways to make land more productive and get extra economic benefits for the farm doing things that have benefits for the water,” said Hildebrand. The agenda for the event will include a keynote address on improving economic performance of a farm, along with a soil demonstration. Next, a panel will speak on benefits of no-till/cover crops. “There will be a farmer panel where local farmers will talk about what they have learned from their experiences and why (a particular
method) worked for them,” said Hildebrand. During lunch, a vendor expo will be available for attendees to peruse. Hildebrand noted that organizers hope to have a dozen vendors at the event. Among those that will be present are TeamAg Incorporated, Stroud Water Research Center, Red Farm, Lancaster Farmland Trust, Lancaster Clean Water Partners, Penn State Extension, Ephrata National Bank, and Pequea Planners. Following lunch, a seminar on personal water use called “Ensuring Clean Water for Your Family” will be held. The final seminar will be a panel discussion addressing opportunities. “We will also talk about laws and regulations coming into play so (farmers) can be prepared,” said Hildebrand. “We will talk about funding opportunities for farmers who want to make changes on their farm but need help to pay for (them).” The seminar is sponsored by the following local municipalities: West Cocalico Township, East Cocalico Township, Adamstown Borough, Denver Borough, Ephrata Borough, Ephrata Township, Clay Township, East Earl Township, West Earl Township, Earl Township, Caernarvon Township, Terre Hill Borough, and New Holland Borough. There is no cost to attend the seminar, but interested parties are asked to register by Friday, Nov. 29. Readers may register by searching for “Farmers Field Day” at www.eventbrite.com or by calling 717-842-4195 or 717-336-8720 or by emailing

Shoes from pg 1 MK4K was founded by Lynn and Tom Engle in July of this year in honor of their son, Max, who passed away in 2018. Max was the first male probation officer in Chester County’s WRAP (Women’s Reentry Assessment & Programming) Initiative. In this role, he worked with at-risk women who were on parole or probation. By helping the women rebuild and restart their lives, he was also helping their families. Jennifer Lopez, executive director of the Friends Association and founder of the WRAP program, was a friend of Max and was once his supervisor. “We will never truly comprehend the depth of the impact that Max had on each person he interacted with,” said Lopez. “His calm, compassionate and caring demeanor created a healing and
restorative relationship for so many women. Through MK4K his impact continues, and we are honored to be a part (of that).” “It’s been nice working with Jen because she knew Max and she misses him like we do. It’s been a nice partnership,” said Lynn. Lynn explained that the family purchased the shoes using its own funds, as well as donations gleaned from a GoFundMe campaign. “The Friends Association had shoe sizes for us. We went into Famous Footwear in Kennett Square with a spreadsheet and walked out with boxes of shoes,” Lynn reported. “We paid retail, but we’re working on some connections to get donations from shoe companies for a deeper discount.” By coincidence, the family was able to meet one of the recipients
of the shoes. “We got to meet one of the children - who is a 9month-old - and Max had worked with her mother,” Lynn said. “She happened to be there when we dropped off the shoes. It was fun to meet her and put at least one face to the kids we are helping.” Max’s Kicks for Kids plans to provide new back-to-school sneakers each fall for Chester County children who would not otherwise be able to afford them. “These children have many struggles to overcome,” said Lynn. “With the help of MK4K, they won’t have to worry about having a good pair of shoes to start the school year.” The family is currently trying to obtain shoes for next year’s back-to-school distribution. “We accept shoes from toddler (size)
all the way up to men’s size 11 for high school students,” Lynn said. “Maybe someone knows someone who can connect us to one of the big shoe companies, so we can get our cost down per shoe. Right now, we’re averaging $40 per pair. “We started with 32 kids this year, and next year we will expand that to 200 to 250 within (the Friends) organization,” she added. “Depending on or funding, we will expand from there.” For more information about MK4K, readers may visit www.maxskicksforkids.org or www.facebook.com/maxskicks forkids. Those who would like to donate shoes may contact Lynn at lynn@maxskicksforkids.org. More information about the Friends Association is available at www.friendsassoc.org.

The Bondelandet Lodge, the local connection with Sons of Norway, will meet on Friday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. and road traffic and safety improvement projects in Chester County will receive more than $2.5 million in state funding. The projects, which are funded through PennDOT’s Multimodal Transportation Fund, were approved by the Commonwealth Finance Authority. They are as follows: $1 million for Schuylkill Township for the Route 23 sidewalk project; $735,812 for Oxford Borough for the Safe Routes to School project; $119,389 for West Bradford Township for lighting for Stargazers
Mortonville Road. Funding for the projects comes through Act 89 of 2013, Pennsylvania’s Comprehensive Transportation Funding Plan, which increased transit funding and established dedicated multimodal funding for aviation, passenger rail, rail freight, port, and bicycle-pedestrian projects. Dinniman said that the latest projects were another example of the ability of investments in transportation infrastructure to help drive both transportation safety and economic growth.

As part of an effort to ensure that every family in the community has a happy holiday season, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine has launched several collection efforts, and the community is invited to participate. For Thanksgiving, the YMCA’s branches will distribute food bags or baskets. Families receiving financial assistance from the YMCA or that have been referred to the Y as needing food assistance and have completed the request form will receive the dinner bags prior to Thanksgiving. The public is invited to donate a meal or pick up a list of food items requested by families. It is not necessary to be a YMCA member to participate. “Each branch will do it a little differently,” explained Leigh Tobin, YMCA marketing specialist. “(At some branches) there is a pumpkin turkey with paper feathers. On the feathers is a list of food items that families are requesting, whether they want stuffing or cranberry sauce, and things they cannot (afford). At the Brandywine YMCA, they are giving out a bag with the list and people can just bring back the (filled) bag.” She said residents may also donate gift cards for supermarkets
or gift certificates for turkeys. In addition, all of the YMCA branches have Angel Trees that list items needed by the local families for the holidays. Again, families receiving financial assistance from the YMCA or that have been referred to the Y as needing assistance will receive gifts donated by the community. As part of Angel Tree program, children and adults complete a wish list to request anything from bikes and games to clothing and supermarket gift cards. Donations are picked up by or sent to families prior to Christmas. Last year, Tobin reported that more than 1,700 children and their families received gifts through the YMCA’s Angel Tree program. “Being here at the Y has been thoroughly life-changing,” shared a previous recipient of a Thanksgiving basket and Angel Tree gifts. “It started with so many little things, like working with me when money was extra tight around the holidays, adding me to the Angel Tree so my son could receive presents at Christmastime, and getting bags of food at Thanksgiving. Receiving that made me feel that people really do get it. I wasn’t alone and, of course, it helped me get through the holidays.” Local branches are participat-

Remembering Max By Francine Fulton
One of ways that grieving families can find comfort after a heartbreaking loss is to focus their energies on keeping the memories of their loved one alive through positive efforts to benefit the community. Max’s Kicks for Kids (MK4K), a new organization that provides back-to-school shoes for children in need, is named for Max Engle, a Chester County probation officer who passed away in September 2018. MK4K was founded by president Tom Engle, Max’s father; vice president Lynn Engle, Max’s mother; and secretary Claire Engle, Max’s sister. Lynn said that the family members never imagined that they would start an organization in Max’s memory. “Our niece and nephew lost their son, and they have a large foundation - Griffin’s Guardians. Griffin had a brain tumor (and passed away) at
7 and even though he and Max had 25 years between them, they were buddies,” Lynn stated. “I admired what they had done, but I never expected we would do anything like that.” At first, she said, the family decided to volunteer at Kennett Area Community Service. “Before we started the foundation, we started volunteering at the local food cupboard; it is something I always wanted to do,” Lynn shared. “After Max died, I had to do something to continue and live by his example.” She said that the family was influenced by the quote, “I cannot do all the good that the world needs. But the world needs all the good that I can do.” “(Volunteering) was my baby step toward forming the foundation. It is humbling and gratifying to see the good we do (at the food cupboard), and we wanted to do more,” Lynn said. “As time went on, we were struck
more and more by the loss of him, not just in our world, but in the world (where) he had a big impact on a lot of people,” said Lynn. “At Max’s funeral there was a woman, whom we didn’t know, who introduced herself as being one of the people on probation that Max had supervised. She said that she was sad for herself because she wouldn’t have Max to help her, but she was also sad for all the other people who wouldn’t have Max’s help. “As the months went on, that statement really rang truer and truer with us,” Lynn continued. “In June of this year, we started feeling like we wanted to do something to continue the good he did.” The family formed a nonprofit organization and chose to collect shoes because Max loved shoes. “A lot of organizations (collect) Christmas gifts, so we were thinking about back-to-school supplies. I was a teacher, and that was close to my heart,” Lynn explained. “My daughter said, ‘It has to be shoes.’
That was her idea.” In time, the family partnered with the Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children, recently donating 32 pairs of shoes to the organization. Lynn said forming the charity has given the family a new focus. “Even before we started the foundation, his life and death were never out of our minds. Until you go through it, people don’t understand,” Lynn said. “We think about him moment by moment. (Forming the charity) helped me to have something to focus on. My husband and I are both retired, and we have a lot of time. It keeps my mind busy; it makes me feel better to do some good.” Lynn said the task of forming a charity has been emotionally difficult, but it helps with the healing process. “I get my strength from Max,” she said. “I feel like I have the strength of two people, and I couldn’t do it without him.”
off,” she added. “It is a tradition, and my kids said they wouldn’t miss it for the world.” As in previous years, all participants at the Turkey Bowl will be cheered on by the Tel Hai turkey mascot. “The turkey wishes to remain anonymous. He’ll be back this year and wants to keep the mystery of his identity going,” said Gregory. The Thanksgiving Day run was started in 1992 by former camp program director Buzz Tyson, who is now director of the Lighthouse Youth Center in Oxford. The Turkey Bowl is sponsored by local businesses. The sponsors are listed at the event website. Proceeds from the event are used to benefit Tel Hai Camp and Retreat, a nonprofit Christian camp that is a member of the
Christian Camping and Conference Association. The camp is located along Beaver Dam Road, 1.5 miles east of Route 10. The GPS address is 31 Lasso Drive, Honey Brook. For more information, readers may contact Gregory at 610-273-3969 or bruce@telhaicamp.org or visit the website.
Turkey Bowl from pg 1 Among the participants in 2018 were members of the Stratton family of Downingtown, including Rebecca and Eric and their children, Aidan, Gabe and Meredith. “I have been doing the Turkey Bowl since 2014; it was my first 5K,” Rebecca reported. “My family started doing it with me in 2015. My daughter does the fun run, and last year my husband joined me and my two (sons) for the first time in the 5K.” Rebecca said the event is ideal for local families. “It is something that I do, and everyone saw how much fun it was, and they joined me,” she said, adding, “We live in Guthriesville, so it’s not too far and our kids take homeschool classes there. “I cook the turkey and we head

female winner was Traci Tempone of Lancaster, with a time of 20:52. “We had 38 finishers in the 1mile fun run and 353 finishers in the 5K race,” he said, noting that the 5K will be professional timed. Gregory and the other race organizers are hoping for good weather this year. “Thanksgiving is a week later this year, so hopefully it won’t be colder than last year,” he noted. “We had frigid weather last year, which we think kept some runners from coming out.” Gregory said that the Thanksgiving event has become a tradition with area families. “Besides the Honey Brook area, we have runners from Downingtown, Gap, Oxford and New Holland,” he stated.

with the Thanksgiving holiday, celebrated on Thursday, Nov. 28. “It was designed for everyone to be able to participate, including seniors, children and the disabled,” said Jen Rosenberg, foundation board member. “Participants can do their 5K anywhere, anytime and any way that they want. The idea is to just get moving for a good cause during a week that we all eat too much.” Those who register for the event will be asked to post details about their 5K experience. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative 5K in addition to best times in different age categories. Proceeds from the registration fees will benefit international scholars who are seeking to earn American high school diplomas online. The mission of Scholars’ Promise, a charitable organization, is to provide students around the world the opportunity to earn a worldclass education. Exton resident Dr. Matt Bramucci, the foundation’s executive director, has been teaching online for the past several years for an educational company. He explained that the company partners with local high schools and delivers their academic programs online to students who cannot afford to come to America to study. The students pay tuition, and a portion of the tuition is given to the partner schools. The educational company formed the nonprofit foundation. “We created the charity so we can accept charitable donations for scholarships for students to study online with us,” Bramucci explained. HiSet Testing from pg 1 “The HiSet is another test that individuals can use to obtain their high school equivalency diploma. It is another option in addition to the GED test that most people are familiar with,” explained Maryann Stravous, director of workforce education for the Chester County OIC. “The GED is only able to be taken as a computer-based test. The HiSet can be done on paper or the computer.” According to www.hiset.ets .org, the test was developed in 2014. “It came about a few years ago. It has taken a while to become known,” said Stravous. She compared the two tests to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the ACT. “SAT was the only thing you could take. Now, ACT is accepted as well, so there are two tests that colleges accept. This is a similar situation,” she said. Stravous explained that there are some slight differences between the GED and the HiSet. “In the GED test there are four sections - reading and language arts, which we call RLA; social studies; science; and math,” she
noted. “HiSet has five sections because it breaks out the RLA to reading and writing separately. You do an essay on both tests. (The essay) is included in the RLA section for the GED and separate in the HiSet.” She also noted that the fee to take the HiSet is slightly lower than that of the GED. Students are encouraged to take the tests in sections on different days. “There are four parts to the GED, and it is recommended that they take one part at a time,” said Jackie Painter, testing center administrator and test proctor. “If they take two parts, it would be science and social studies because they are shorter.” Painter reported that about 20 to 25 people take the GED test at the CareerLink facility per month. As of mid-November, no one has registered to take the HiSet. “We have four computers that deliver the tests, so there will only be four people in the room, and there is a proctor in there,” explained Painter. “People taking the HiSet can have a calculator, and we provide it.” Stravous noted that some folks feel more comfortable taking a test on paper rather than online.

To educate consumers on one of the leading causes of vision loss and blindness, Prevent Blindness has created a new resource, the “Diabetes and the Eyes” toolkit. Materials are available in both English and Spanish. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that diabetes is the leading cause of new blindness in adults. According to the Prevent Blindness study, “The Future of Vision: Forecasting the Prevalence and Costs of Vision Problems,” more than 8 million Americans have diabetes-related retinopathy. Those numbers are projected to sharply increase in the future by 35% to 10.9 million by 2032 and a 63% increase to 13.2 million by 2050. Diabetes-related eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that people with diabetes may face as a complication of the disease, including diabetes-related

State Sen. Andy Dinniman and his poodle, Jagger, recently visited the Coatesville Area Senior Center to recognize residents age 90 or older with special Senate Certificates of Recognition. Since taking office, Dinniman has visited senior centers and senior living communities throughout the region to offer birthday wishes to nearly 1,000 seniors each year who are part of his 90+ Birthday Program. Under the program, area seniors age 90 and older receive special certificates on their birthdays. Dinniman said the 90+ Birthday Program is part of his effort to not only recognize the contributions of the senior community but also to ensure that local seniors are receiving support and services from tax rebates to medical assistance.

Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (DVGRR) will again participate in Lancaster County Community Foundation’s (LCCF) Extraordinary Give event on Friday, Nov. 22. This 24-hour online philanthropy event will begin at midnight and continue until 11:59 p.m. Through the Extraordinary Give, nonprofit organizations in Lancaster County raise donations to earn a share of the LCCF $500,000 stretch pool as well as other incentive monetary awards and prizes. Winter Season Driving News With the winter season approaching, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), and Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) recently outlined the commonwealth’s plans for winter services, highlighting the tools the public can use to successfully prepare for the season. This winter, the PTC is prepared to battle the elements as well, with 380 trucks, plows, and salt spreaders and 400 licensed equipment operators ready to activate 24/7 staffing this fall. Its goal is to keep the turnpike system as free of snow and ice as possible, but motorists too have a responsibility to know their own winter driving skills and their vehicle’s performance. Winter storms are a fact of life in Pennsylvania, and drivers should never assume roads will be free of ice and snow during and after a blizzard. Wintertime driving requires reducing driving speed to well below the posted limit, even in an all-wheel-drive or four-wheeldrive vehicle. If motorists encounter snow- or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance, and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 440 crashes resulting in one fatality and 221 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors. Motorists should prepare for potential bad weather by ensuring they have supplies in their cars before heading out: food, water, blankets, extra gloves and hats, a cellphone charger, hand or foot warmers, a windshield brush and scraper, and any specialized items like medications or baby and pet supplies. It is also important for drivers to know the difference between a weather watch and warning. A watch means there is increased risk of a hazardous weather event, but
its occurrence, location, or timing is still uncertain. Drivers should pay attention to forecasts and plan out what they will do if or when it occurs. A warning means the weather event is imminent or is happening. People should take immediate action to protect lives and property. In addition, snow squalls can often produce dangerous and deadly travel hazards on otherwise clear winter days. The National Weather Service now issues “Snow Squall Warnings,” which alert drivers of whiteout conditions and slippery
roadways, so motorists can avoid traveling directly into these dangerous squalls. For more information on PennDOT’s winter preparations and additional winter-driving resources for motorists, readers may visit www.PennDOT.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts. The public can access travel information on nearly 40,000 statemaintained roadway miles year-

Turkey Savings
Bank Posts Teen Video Contest
Frozen Private Label Whole Self Basting Turkey
Ephrata National Bank is accepting submissions for its Lights, Camera, Save! video contest. The contest, organized by the American Bankers Association Foundation, is a national competition that encourages teenagers to use video to communicate the value of saving money and to inspire their peers to become lifelong savers. Lights, Camera, Save! gives students an opportunity to harness their creativity, learn about using money wisely and communicate those lessons with their peers. Ephrata National Bank believes that a strong financial education is critical to a successful future. To participate, students ages 13 to 18 must create a video that is 90 seconds or shorter and focuses on saving and using money wisely. Entrants must submit a link to their video along with a completed entry form to the bank by Tuesday, Dec. 3. Ephrata National Bank will host the first round of judging and select a winner to compete at the national level for a prize up to $5,000, plus a scholarship for a teacher at the winner’s school to attend the annual Jump$tart National Educator Conference. The local winner will receive $500 from the bank. Videos will be judged on their quality, message, and content as well as other criteria set forth by the contest’s official rules. To learn more about the contest, readers may visit www.epnb.com/lightscamerasave/. Ephrata National Bank is an independent community bank with 12 full-service locations in Lancaster, Lebanon, and Berks counties. For more information, readers may visit www.epnb.com.

“Emotional Gettysburg,” a book featuring original paintings by Karl J. Kuerner and essays by Chester County author Bruce E. Mowday, is being released by Regent Press. Kuerner created 20 original paintings of Gettysburg for the book, which combine today’s peaceful existence with the history of the pivotal battle of the American Civil War. Kuerner was personally tutored by two members of the famous Wyeth family of artists, Andrew and Carolyn Wyeth, the children of artist and book illustrator N.C. Wyeth. Kuerner enlisted Mowday to write essays combining the history of the battle with the painter’s impressions of Gettysburg today and in 1863. Mowday has authored more than 30 books, including three other books on the Civil War and two centered on Gettysburg, “Pickett’s Charge: The Untold Story” and “J. Howard Wert’s Gettysburg.” Advance copies of the book will be ready by Sunday, Dec. 1, with the official release taking place in January 2020. For more details about purchasing copies of “Emotional Gettysburg,” readers may contact Mowday at mowday@mowday.com or Regent Press at regentpress@mindspring.com. For more information on Kuerner, readers may visit www.karljkuerner.com. Information on Mowday and his books is available at www.mowday.com.
