SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Quilting Group Seeks Volunteers, Fabric Donations By Francine Fulton

Members of the Mission Quilters at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Coatesville are seeking some extra hands to help with their efforts. Volunteers are needed to help “tie” the quilt layers together during meetings of the group, which are held on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. “If you can tie a knot, you can do this,” said Jean Broderick of Elverson, one of the group leaders. As part of the process, a needle and thread are used to pierce the three quilt layers, which include the top and the back with the batting in between. Similar to sewing on a button, the needle and thread go through each square of the material several times and the thread is eventually tied off. “ We could really use a lot more (help),” said Broderick, who noted that

the group has been meeting for more than 10 years. The completed quilts, which measure 60 by 80 inches and are composed of 11-inch squares, are donated to Lutheran World Relief (LWR) as part of its Mission Quilt program. According to www.lwr.org/quilts, Mission Quilts are used by residents of impoverished countries for bedding, as simple tents or floor coverings or to carry infants. “We send (the quilts) to a warehouse in Maryland, and Lutheran World Relief sends the quilts to wherever they are needed,” Broderick said. “Most of ours have gone to India. “We have a number on the box when we ship them, so we can track it that way,” she added. In 2017, the group donated 24 quilts to LWR, and so far for 2018, the members sent 33. “ We have seven in progress right now,” Broderick said. See Quilting Group pg 7

served buffet-style in the church fellowship hall and the menus vary. The meal on Nov. 10 featured chicken salad and ham salad sandwiches with chicken corn soup, chips and dessert. Beverages are also included with each meal. “Everything is homemade,” noted congregation member Jill Shank, who leads the meal preparation. The Rev. Sarah Diamond, 17, a senior at Twin Valley High School (TVHS), recently earned the Venturing Summit Award, the highest award that a youth can earn in the Venturing program.

“It’s not necessarily harder, but it’s more involved. It’s more high adventure,” said Sarah Diamond of Elverson when describing Venturing, the co-ed division of Boy Scouts of America that was founded in 1988. “It’s the same activities (Boy Scouts) do, like rock climbing and kayaking, but it’s aimed for older kids, 14 to 21.” Sarah, 17, a senior at Twin Valley High School (TVHS), recently earned the Venturing Summit Award, the highest award that a youth can earn in the Venturing program. The Venturing Summit Award is the equivalent in status to the rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts or the Girl Scout Gold Award. Like the criteria for Eagle Scout rank and the Gold Award, one of the requirements for the Summit Award is to plan and lead a community service project. the effort is a way to fulfill the church’s mission statement, which reads, in part, “To love God (and) serve Christ by loving others.” “We are here to serve the community,” said Keen. “We want to hear from the community what we can do for them.” Keen emphasized that although the event is held in a church, there is no pressure to join the church or attend Sunday services. “ We just sit around the tables and talk. It is very casual,” said Keen, noting that the church’s first community luncheon was held in October. “The last time people said that a (good way) to get to know people in the community was by coming here.” “Last month, we had some gentlemen who were just driving through and saw the sign and stopped,” said Shank. She noted that the church members often enjoy eating together. Annual events include a chicken barbecue in the summer and a breakfast that is held after the Easter Sunday sunrise service. Another church member volunteering to help cook and serve is 95-year-old Ann McAfee, who has been attending Nantmeal UMC for her entire life. The youngest volunteer was Taylor

With the winter season approaching, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) shared the agency’s plans for winter services and highlighted tools members of the public can use through the winter and how they can prepare for the coming season. PennDOT’s top priority is safety, and that guides winter preparations and operations. To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, resources are available at www.penndot.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts. The public can also access travel information on nearly 40,000 roadway miles year-round at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plow truck locations and details of when statemaintained roadways were last plowed. The information is made possible by PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) technology, which uses units in each of the more than 2,200 departmentowned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing where a truck is located. The 40,000 miles for which PennDOT is responsible translates into 96,000 snow-lane miles - enough miles to circle the globe nearly four times. A snow lane is calculated as the miles of road multiplied by the number of lanes, which means a 1-mile section of four-lane roadway would equal 4 snow-lane miles. The department maintains roughly the same number of miles maintained by the state in New York, New Jersey, and all the New England states combined. With $228 million budgeted for this winter’s statewide operations, PennDOT deploys about 4,500 on-the-road workers, has more than 620,000 tons of salt on hand across the state, and will take salt deliveries throughout the winter. Winter maintenance is a critical and difficult task, and drivers should always think safety first and be sure that they are giving plenty of room to PennDOT operators and other motorists. When winter weather hits, PennDOT’s primary focus is on interstates and expressways, and equipment may be redirected to those routes during significant winter events. The more traffic a roadway has, the more attention it will receive from plows, so motorists may find deeper accumulations on less-traveled routes and should adjust their driving for those conditions. If motorists encounter snow or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 440 crashes resulting in one fatality and 221 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors. In addition to planning for winSee Winter Driving pg 5

ter travel conditions, motorists should prepare their vehicles for the season. Tires should be checked often for the correct level of air pressure and adequate tire tread depth to perform on ice and snow. A quick way to check tread depth is to insert a penny in the tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down. If the entire head can be seen, the tires are worn and traction will suffer. If the driver lives in an area prone to heavy

snow, he or she may want to consider using dedicated snow tires or carrying a set of tire chains. At a minimum, all-season tires should be rated for use in mud and snow. Once vehicles are travel-ready, drivers should be prepared for winter or vehicle emergencies, especially if long-distance travel is planned. PennDOT urges motorists to carry an emergency kit. An emergency kit should include items such as nonperishable

food, water, first aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cellphone charger and a small snow shovel. However, motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families may have. Drivers should consider adding such items as baby supplies, extra medication, pet supplies, or even children’s games. Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA,

which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 860 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website. For more information on PennDOT, winter preparations, and additional winter-driving resources for motorists, readers may visit www.penndot.gov.

At an upcoming meeting of the group, instruction will be provided to those who want to tie the quilts. “You tie them a couple of times to make sure they are tight so they do not come apart,” said Broderick. After the tying process, the borders of the quilts are completed on a sewing machine by Broderick and group member Loretta Donohue. The congregation donates to the group members, who purchase sewing materials at discount stores. The community is invited to donate as well. “We can use money for batting and backing, (as well as) fabric,” Broderick noted.

OIC Tutoring Program Seeks Volunteers rs Online Training Available By Francine Fulton

The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteers willing to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Debbie Rikess, who is the new adult tutoring program coordinator, there is a current waiting list of 22 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer

she said. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations,” Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet.” She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. In the past, tutors were required to attend a training workshop held at the library in Exton. Now, the program offers online training for tutors. “We recently switched to online training

According to John Styer, one of the organizers of the first Terre Hill Christmas in the Park, one goal of the extravaganza is to create a holiday gathering spot for ELANCO-area neighbors. “It is to be an affordable, fun event that gets the entire community involved because there is something for everybody to enjoy,” said Styer. Styer said that the idea for Christmas in the Park has long been under consideration, but in the fall of 2017, a committee came together with community support to organize the inaugural event, which will be held in the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Dec. 7, 8, and 9, from 5 to 9 p.m. Plans for the event include a combination lighted walking trail and live Nativity, visits from Santa Claus, live music, and food items for purchase. The walking trail and Nativity will include lighted decorations. “The (light) displays along the trail are all handmade from metal,” said Styer, who explained that 75 wire frame displays were completed by November. “Everything was hand drawn, and (the displays were) bent from quarter-inch steel and custom strung with up to 20 different colored lights.” According to Styer, the animals that will be part of the walk-through, multiscene live Nativity, as well as a snowman playing baseball on the town diamond, will be among the many light creations. “We will decorate the entire park with See Terre Hill pg 10

lights,” said Styer. Admission to the trail will be by suggested donation, and children ages 4 to 12 will receive a discount. Children age 3 and under will be admitted free. The admission will be good for one entire evening. Because the trail covers approximately one quartermile of walking distance, transportation via a golf cart will be available to those who require assistance. In addition to the lighted trail, children may enjoy a holiday train ride through the park, which will also be available for a suggested donation. The train will travel through the forest, over a bridge, and even to the Terre Hill North Pole. Families may also want to enjoy a horse-drawn carriage

ride through town for a fee. Christmas Village will be located in the grove of trees by the lower pavilions. In this area, children will have the chance to visit Santa Claus and whisper Christmas wishes. In an area adjacent to the village, vendors will sell handmade items created especially for the upcoming gift-giving season. Other activities held in this area will include pet photos with Mrs. Claus from 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 7 and gingerbread cookie decorating for children from 5 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 8 and 9. A Community Corner where visitors can learn about local nonprofit organizations will also be part of Christmas Village. In Christmas Tree Plaza (the main park pavilion), organizers

have arranged for a number of food vendors to sell items such as soft pretzels, lemonade, and french fries, funnel cakes, and hot beverages. The pavilion food stand will also be open and selling soup and sandwiches. The Christmas Tree Plaza will feature live music, including holiday music with Steve on Dec. 7, which will be an interactive show of gospel music, and holiday favorites. On Dec. 8, members of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church band will play from 5 to 7 p.m., and

local musician Rich Arment will perform from 7:30 to 9 p.m. On Dec. 9, the plaza will feature music by Steve Dincau from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The plaza will also be the site of visits from animals, including the MaPaw Siberian Husky Rescue from 5 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 7 and the Eastland Alpacas from 5 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 8. Readers who would like more information on the event may visit http://terrehilldays.com or search for “Terre Hill Days Committee” on Facebook.

Trace” awareness event for elementary-age children and their families on Earth Day at Hibernia County Park in Coatesville. Sarah recruited a staff of youths and adults to run a series of fun games and activities at seven stations, each representing one of the seven principles of Leave No Trace. “One activity was predator versus prey, which was like sharks and minnows, where the predators are out in the field, and they had to tag the prey,” Sarah explained. “It showed how the different animals interact with each other.” More than 50 youths and their families participated in the free event. Participants who completed all seven stations also received a Leave No Trace backpack card to remind them of what they learned that day. “My friends and family helped advertise (the event) on social media, and I had flyers distributed at Twin Valley Elementary and at Honey Brook Elementary (centers),” Sarah noted. “Back in January, when I first had the idea, I went to the park and I had to have it approved by one of the rangers. “There was no minimum (number of hours), but I ended up putting in 150 hours,” she added. Sarah had to prepare a project workbook for approval by the Chester County Council Boys Scouts of America (BSA). “I had to document my planning process and (discuss) and how the project went,” she said. “I got a patch, a medal and a certificate. Just like an Eagle Court of Honor, you can have a Summit Court of Honor. I chose

to celebrate in a smaller setting with just my family.” Sarah is a member of Venturing Crew 51, which is chartered at Cedarville United Methodist Church in Pottstown. Her first adventure with the crew at the age of 14 was to take part in a canoeing trip in northern Minnesota that covered nearly 125 miles. “That was one of my favorite trips in Venturing,” she noted. As Sarah continued with Venturing, she became involved in the leadership aspect of the program. She is a graduate of National Youth Leadership Training, the BSA’s highest youth leadership program. She has served as her crew’s treasurer, vice president and president. Sarah also has served on various staff positions at Horseshoe Scout Reservation’s Camp Ware, most recently as the health and fitness manager. Sarah’s siblings are also involved in Scouting. According to the Chester County Council BSA, Sarah’s sister, Alexandra “Alex” Diamond, was the council’s first and only other recipient of the Summit Award in 2016. Concert To Benefit Food Cupboard By Francine Fulton

The fifth annual Christmas concert to benefit the Octorara Area Food Cupboard will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 4 p.m. in the auditorium at Octorara Area High School, 226 Highland Road, Atglen. A nominal admission fee will be collected at the door, and additional donations will be accepted. This year’s concert will feature choirs from various schools and churches. The participating group will include the Kennett Community Choir, the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church choir from Atglen, the Octorara Chorale, the Octorara Intermediate School Choraliers, the Parkesburg United Methodist Church choir, the Penningtonville Presbyterian Church choir, the St. Patrick’s Church of Kennett Square choir and the Unionville Presbyterian Church choir. “The choirs vary from year to year; some have been (performing) the entire time,” explained Octorara Area School District

(OASD) school board member Brian Norris, event organizer. “It gives them a chance to sing in front of a (different) audience (than they typically would).” Norris noted that each choir will perform two musical numbers and the choirs will also sing together. “There is a combined selection at the beginning and end where everyone is on stage,” he said. “It’s pretty impressive.” Dr. Michele Orner, OASD superintendent, will be master of ceremonies. She will introduce the choirs and make announcements about their upcoming activities or concerts. The concert coordinator will be Bill Johnson, a retired OASD music instructor. “I’ll be directing the first and last numbers,” he explained. “We will have close to 150 voices.” To prepare for the combined musical numbers, the choirs will rehearse on their own prior to the concert and then hold a combined rehearsal that afternoon. “They practice in school or at church, and that way they learn the combined songs ahead of See Benefit Concert pg 12

the food cupboard, which is run by director Judy Dougherty. “This concert is part of a capital campaign,” Norris said. “That’s (the amount) that Judy needs to keep her operational - to pay rent and utilities. There is a high demand for food for our area. It is a high-need time, especially this time of year.” Norris noted that the auditorium holds just under 1,000 people and that he would love to see those seats filled on the afternoon of the concert. “It’s a way to kick off the holiday season,” he said. “Most of the choirs do faith-based Christmas songs. It’s a very nice

concert; it’s always enjoyable.” The volunteer-run Octorara Area Food Cupboard, located at 714 W. Main St. in Parkesburg, serves the OASD region, including Atglen, Christiana, Cochranville, Compass, Parkesburg, Pomeroy, Sadsbury and Wagontown. The ninth annual Small Business Saturday will take place on Saturday, Nov. 24. Dedicated to supporting the diverse range of local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy, and enhance neighborhoods around the country, Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010 in response to small business owners’ most pressing need: getting more customers. Shop Small is a nationwide movement to support small, independent businesses and call attention to the valuable and distinct contributions they make to their communities and the economy. Shop Small celebrates small businesses ranging from retail stores and restaurants to fitness studios and salons, and everything in between. The Shop Small movement was spurred by the widespread participation in Small Business Saturday. To learn more, readers may visit www.shopsmall.com.

Beards for Brothers will benefit from a fundraiser during the month of November. Local police departments and first responders in Lancaster County will join to raise funds. The campaign was started by Officer Bill Watt, who heads up the East Hempfield Police Department K-9 program. Each year, officers select a first responder or organization from the community who is currently battling cancer or provides care to those battling cancer. This year, the campaign will raise money for Officer Wendell Metzler of the New Holland Borough Police Department, a 25-year veteran of law enforcement, a longtime volunteer and an emergency medical technician. In June, it was discovered he had stage IV melanoma. Metzler has undergone numerous radiation treatments and is currently receiving aggressive immunotherapy treatments to battle the disease. Metzler has been unable to serve his community, and the cost of treatment is significant. Throughout November, Faulkner Chevrolet staff members will also grow out their facial hair and collect funds through the program’s GoFundMe page. The goal is to make a sizeable donation and join members of Akron Borough, Columbia Borough, East Cocalico Township, East Hempfield Township, Elizabethtown Borough, Lititz Borough, Lancaster City, Manheim Borough, Manor Township, Millersville University, New Holland Borough, Southern Regional, Strasburg Borough, West Hempfield Township, West Lampeter Township, and Quarryville Borough police departments, along with Lancaster County Park Rangers andvolunteer firefighters, EMS, and dispatchers from throughout Lancaster County, to raise funds for Metzler and his family.
