Christmas at Joanna: A holiday tradition BY FRANCINE FULTON

weather. “There is a mix and match of little toys, games, crafts and activity sheets,” she pointed out. “We have a coloring book in one of the houses, and the gnome house has a stuffed gnome for kids to take home.” “We plan on 350 kids (visiting the village), which is what we had last year,” she added. Children can visit the village any time during the holiday season. The mailbox, which will be accessible 24 hours a day, will close on Monday, Dec. 18. All letters should be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

“Families have made our Christmas event their family tradition,” said Mark Zerr, executive director of the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA), when describing Christmas at Joanna, held at Historic Joanna Furnace. “It has become a very popular community event.” This year, HCVHA will present Christmas at Joanna on Friday, Dec. 1, from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 2 and 3, from 4 to 9 p.m. The event will feature a live Nativity, children’s activities, a sale of food and beverages and a craft market. Those who visit Christmas at Joanna will be able to see the historic site well in advance as they drive along Route 10, since more than 1,000 glowing luminarias will light the furnace walkways. The luminarias will be lit each evening by Boy Scout Troop 543, Plowville. This year’s Christmas at Joanna event will depict Christmas 1873, when the furnace was operated by the Smith family. During the event, the mule stable will be transformed into the parlor of the Victorian mansion of ironmaster L. Heber Smith and his wife, Ella Jane Grubb Smith. “This year, we will be doing a kitchen setting, where re-enactors will be preparing

The event will also mark the opening of Santa’s Village in the park, which consists of a series of small playhouses that children may visit, as well as a mailbox where they can mail their letters to Santa Claus.

Each child who places a letter in the mailbox will receive a personalized response from Santa in the mail. In addition to lighting a large tree in the park, the event will include a visit by Santa Claus, who will arrive on the back of Twin Valley Fire Department truck. Free coffee, provided by Twin Valley Coffee, and hot chocolate, donated by the Heritage Restaurant and the Berks Construction Group, will be available. “There will also be s’mores over an open campfire and a craft for the kids to do that night,” said Erin

McMullen, a member of the parks and recreation committee. McMullen has decorated each of the playhouses with a different theme, and each one will contain a small gift for children. “The village has expanded this year. We had eight houses last year and we will have 19 houses this year,” McMullen reported. “There is a treat in each house from the elves.” Each of the gifts, including crafts, candy, hot cocoa and stickers, has been individually bagged by McMullen, with the help of family members, to keep them safe from the

Victorian dancing will take place in a heated tent. The Hay Creek Valley Gold Band will perform old-time music while the Hay Creek Dancers entertain visitors with period dances. Guests will be invited to participate. Local musical groups will perform around the bonfire, which will be tended by members of Boy Scout Troop 241 of Alleghenyville. Wagon rides will be offered, weather permitting. Youngsters can visit the Kids’ Santa Craft Workshop and make a holiday craft or have their face painted inside one of the heated tents. Also included will be a Christmas light maze. A vintage train display will be in operation in the mechanical technology building. The historic buildings will be open for visitors to explore. will be available for sale in the office/store. Food items for sale will include sausage sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, pork and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, pork barbecue macaroni bowls, soups, chili, homemade furnace fries and kettle corn. The Christmas craft market will offer items such as baked goods, cookies and candy, handmade wood items, homemade soaps, stoneware pottery, handknitted scarves, jewelry, candles and fresh Christmas wreaths. “There are more than 50 vendors, which is an increase (from previous years),” Zerr said, noting that an extra heated tent has been added to accommodate craft vendors. Crafters will also be located outside in an open-air market. Joanna Furnace is located at 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown. Tickets for the event will be sold at the gate. Children age 12 and under will be admitted for free. For more information, visit www.haycreek.org or www.facebook.com/ historicjoannafurnace or call 610-286-0388.

The $19.7 million in opioid settlement funds earmarked for Chester County are part of the $1 billion-plus allocated to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania over 18 years from a 2021 lawsuit settlement. The lawsuit held several opioid manufacturers, distributors and pharmacy chains accountable for alleged wrongdoing related to the marketing, sale and distribution of opioids. The county’s Department of Drug and Alcohol Services will administer the funds for Chester County. The Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services has partnered with Capacity for Change LLC to conduct the brief, confidential and anonymous survey, which is open through Thursday, Nov. 30. Last year, the effort expanded to the park and included the addition of the Christmas village playhouses. “The letters are so moving. That child received a laminated photo of Santa in a bathing suit on the beach. “If they ask specific questions - and they do - we will send pictures back or write funny things or send jokes,” McMullen noted. “We really try to make it that when they open it, it’s the

#iGiveCatholic initiative announced The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is partnering with the Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia to participate in #iGiveCatholic for the fourth year in a row. #iGiveCatholic is nationally recognized as the official Catholic giving day. It is celebrated annually on #Giving Tuesday, which follows Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, and will fall on Nov. 28 this year. The advance giving phase will take place through Monday, Nov. 27. Last year, #iGiveCatholic raised more than $1.5 million for 102 Catholic parishes,

schools, and charitable ministries within the five-county archdiocese. This year, 169 organizations are signed up to participate in the #iGive Catholic initiative, including all 15 archdiocesan high schools, which is the most to ever sign up. Sponsors are providing prize incentives for all participating organizations, giving them an opportunity to raise extra funds through #iGiveCatholic. To make a gift to a participating organization, visit https://philadelphia.igive catholic.org. For more information on #iGiveCatholic, visit www.igivecatholic.org.
