While many youngsters write letters to Santa Claus expressing their Christmas wishes, local children have an opportunity to receive a personalized letter in return through the Twin Valley Letters to Santa program.
The effort started last year when Morgantown resident Erin McMullen set up a mailbox at the Caernarvon Township Building in Morgantown. She, along with a few other volunteers, answered each of the letters.
“Last year, we did a tiny setup with a mailbox, and we had 100 letters come through. Myself and two other ‘elves,’ as we call ourselves, wrote back to each of those children,” McMullen said. “The letters were very personalized. If they wrote they were looking for Legos, we wrote something about Legos.”
The volunteers assisted Santa in answering the letters as they came in throughout the holiday season. “Some of the (return) letters were handwritten and some of them were done on the computer with a handwriting font,” McMullen noted.
This year, the Letters to Santa program has expanded. In addition to the mailbox, six children’s playhouses will be set up next to the pavilion at Caernarvon Friendship Park, 3287 North St., Morgantown, beginning on Saturday, Nov. 26. Hot chocolate will be served on opening day from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., weather permitting.
“This year, we are making it a lot more interactive and fun for the kiddos. We have six little playhouses that we have decorated like a little Santa’s village,” McMullen explained. The village will feature a
Gingerbread House, Reindeer Lodge, Toy Workshop, Candy Cane Lane, Winter Wonderland and Candy Kitchen. “There will be special (item) for them to take home from each house,” she said. “In the Toy Workshop, there will be a little toy for them, and at the Candy Cand Lane, there will be candy canes.”
Children may drop off letters through Thursday, Dec. 15. All letters should be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. The mailbox will be accessible 24 hours a day. “People can stop at any time,” said McMullen.

“(The location) is different than last year but still provides cameras, lights, security and lots of parking. Safety was very important (when choosing the location).”
McMullen emphasized that the response letter does not guarantee children that they will receive what they asked for. “We don’t make promises. (If a child requests a doll), we would write, ‘I heard that you want to have a doll. That would be special. At the toy workshop, we love to make dolls.’”
Twin Valley Letters to Santa is being sponsored by McMullen and her husband, Andrew. Loughin Real Estate Group, where McMullen works, is also contributing financial support to the effort, and staff members recently helped paint the houses for the Christmas village.
McMullen is also the administrator for the Twin Valley Gift and Take Facebook group, where members share items they no longer want with other members at no cost. “I have a strong passion to help the
community,” she said.

“We will have it set up so that children can write letters to Santa. When they get to Santa, they can put their letters in the mailbox and say hello to Santa and get a candy cane.”
The Ryerss Gift Shop will be open, offering holiday gifts. “It will be wellstocked,” said Seeburger.
“We have stuffed animals, Ryerss apparel, candles, coasters, light-up cowboy boot glasses, flashing western pins and jewelry.” Also offered for sale will be the
2023 Ryerss Farm calendar. The Giving Tree will be on display for those who choose to provide financial support to the retired and rescued horses that live at the farm. There will be several options such as a bag of feed or a veterinary visit, with a dollar amount assigned to each card. One of the cards will also ask people to sponsor a horse for one year.
“(We invite people) to give a horse a pedicure or buy a halter,” explained Seeburger.
“I always ask the kids, ‘How would you like to buy a Christmas present for a horse?’ They can look at the pictures of the horses and

Founded in 1888, Ryerss Farm provides a comfortable retirement for senior horses, donkeys and mules that have faithfully served their former owners or were rescued from abusive situations. The horses at Ryerss are never worked again and spend their remaining days grazing the fields at the property.
“Omen, a little pinto pony, came from a very bad situation. He was abused and when we first got him, you could not even pet him,” said Seeburger, adding that Omen now welcomes human contact. “He is a real success story; he is a farm favorite.”
In addition to the horses, Ryerss is home to Albert the donkey and Rhubarb, a large potbellied pig, who will all be on hand to visit during the open house. “We have three pigs. They live in the upper barn. Rhubarb is the oldest and the biggest,” noted Seeburger. The other pigs are Hamlet and Penny.

First Responders Complete Leadership Program
Eighteen Chester County first responders receive certification from a leadership program on Oct. 21. They were honored at a gathering in East Windsor, N.J. Pennsylvania’s inaugural class is among the newest graduates of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) Command and Leadership Academy, which was brought to the Chester County Government Services Center in 2022 through Southern Chester County Regional Police Department Chief Gerald Simpson and Chester County Sheriff Fredda Maddox.
For 13 weeks, law enforcement and emergency first responders from Chester, Bucks, Lancaster, Montgomery, and Delaware counties, along with law enforcement officers from Cecil County, Md., undertook rigorous training inspired by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Academy participants studied leading theory and current best practices in four primary areasbecoming a leader, motivating personnel, leading groups and managing environmental factors and outside influences. They applied those

On Saturday, Dec. 3, the Chesco 4-H Outdoors Club will make a meal over an open fire at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. This outdoor adventure, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., is one of several planned activities of the new club.
The Chester County 4-H Program would like to invite families interested in outdoor activities to explore outdoor cooking firsthand at the event. Participants will make a campfire, build a Buddy Burner,
and practice camp knife and campfire safety while making a campfire meal. Families should come prepared for the weather. Activities will be indoors as well as outdoors regardless of the weather.
