Local Teacher Receives Grant Climate science research, 3-D coral reefs, solar-powered robots, and urban gardening experiments are just some of the innovative and forward-thinking projects students will tackle throughout eastern and central Pennsylvania, thanks to the PPL Foundation’s Empowering Educators grants. Since the grant program’s inception in 2003, more than $230,000 has been awarded to more than 165 teachers. The PPL Foundation announced grants to 25 middle and high school teachers to support science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities in their classrooms. Each teacher will receive a grant of $1,000 to spend on equipment and materials for projects. Among the recipients is local teacher Janet Caley from Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown. Caley will use the grant for the supplies needed for special education students to build a solarpowered hydraulic robot, teaching them hands-on lessons in engineering and technology. The PPL Foundation contributes more than $3 million annually to a wide variety of nonprofit organizations in eastern and central Pennsylvania. To learn more, readers may visit www.pplweb.com.

Jalou retired to Ryerss Farm on Aug. 23 at the age of 28. Like the other horses that live at the farm, he will never be ridden or worked again. Ryerss Farm, founded in 1888, provides care for aged, abused or injured horses at its 383-acre facility. Some of the equine residents are brought to Ryerss Farm by their former owners, who want their horses to live out their retirement years at the farm. Other residents are rescued horses, brought to Ryerss Farm by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) or LAPS for a temporary or permanent home. All of the retired horses’ needs are met, including veterinary and dental care. Ryerss Farm is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for visitors. Treats of apples and baby carrots for the horses are welcome. Ryerss Farm is located at 1710 Ridge Road (Route 23), Pottstown. For more information about Ryerss or the open

For those who visit the farm’s residents, the stalls of each of the horses will be clearly labeled with the horse’s name and photo and a biography, including how he or she came to the farm. In addition to horses, the farm is also home to Albert the donkey. Albert came to Ryerss Farm from the Large Animal Protection Society (LAPS), which needed a place for him to stay. Albert has bonded closely with a horse named Max, a Tennessee walker, and the two of them can always be found together in the fields. The site’s newest resident is Jalou, a Trakehner that was born in Germany. According to his biography, Jalou competed in dressage after being imported to the United States. Later in his life, Jalou worked as a dressage schoolmaster. “He schooled the riders, explained Temoyan. “A schoolmaster has learned the steps so well that if there is a rider on him that gives him an incorrect command, he won’t do it.

Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, a nonprofit organization that rescues homeless, abused or unwanted dogs and cats, is currently seeking foster homes for rescued pets. People who are willing to provide a forever home for animals currently in foster care are also needed. Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue Inc. is an allvolunteer organization that was founded on Jan. 1 of this year. “We are brand new, and we have already adopted out over 80 dogs and approximately 40 cats,” said organization founder Mary Bauer. “We are all fosterbased. All of our animals are learning how to live in a home before being adopted out.” She noted that some cats rescued by the organization but are not in foster care can be adopted from Pet Valu stores, including the ones at 144 Eagleview Blvd. in Lionville, and at 408 Commons Drive, Parkesburg. Bauer noted that the first dog rescued by the organization was in December of 2017, when a stray dog was found roaming the streets of Elverson. The dog, Sir Winston, was eventually adopted by the Bauers. “He now lives in front of our fireplace,” Bauer said with a smile. That adoption spurred the founding of the animal rescue. Some dogs and cats come to the organization from families that cannot keep their pets, while others are rescued from dire situations. “A quarter of our animals are owner surrenders,” Bauer noted. “We get puppy mill (dogs), and we also pull from animal control.” Every effort is made to find the owners of stray dogs, “If there is a lost dog, we put them on hold and scan them for a chip,” explained Bauer. “If it doesn’t work out and the owners are not found, we will go ahead and take the dog as long as we have a foster available.” Bauer said the organization’s biggest need is for foster families for both cats and dogs. “Foster families must complete an application and we check their veterinarian references, and we will come and do some teaching in their home as soon as the application is cleared,” she explained. “We provide the food, the vet care and the crate. We want (the dogs and cats) to learn things so it’s easier for them to become adopted.” One of the organization’s success stories is Rose, at dog that was found as a stray after being hit by a car and turned over to Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue. The rescue funded medical care over several months, which included the amputation of a leg, but Rose blossomed in her foster family’s care and they recently adopted her. Bauer said that the rescue is entirely dependent on its volunteers and foster families. “I have an amazing group of volunteers. My husband, Mark, trains dogs, so he works with the dogs that come in,” said Bauer. “We are blessed to do it.” For more information about the rescue, including how to foster, volunteer or adopt, readers may email LuckyDawgAR@ gmail.com. More information is also available at the Facebook page and at www.luckydawgrescue.com. Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue will present a holiday fundraiser, featuring a sale of arts and crafts handmade by local artisans, on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Freedom Village at Brandywine, 15 Freedom Blvd., Coatesville. Admission is free and open to the public. Pictured on front:

OIC Tutoring Program Seeks Volunteers rs Online Training Available By Francine Fulton
The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteers willing to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Debbie Rikess, who is the new adult tutoring program coordinator, there is a current waiting list of 22 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer
she said. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations,” Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet.” She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. In the past, tutors were required to attend a training workshop held at the library in Exton. Now, the program offers online training for tutors. “We recently switched to online training

The Berks County Public Library System has announced that it will discontinue its countywide subscription to the digital downloading service hoopla, effective Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. Hoopla, one of two digital borrowing services available to all Berks County library patrons, provides e-materials to cardholders of participating libraries including e-books, audiobooks, comics, movies, and TV shows. Hoopla was previously restricted to only Reading Public Library patrons, but the library system opened hoopla up to all Berks County residents in early 2017 through financial contributions to Reading’s subscription. Patrons from any of the 19 member libraries could instantly download titles without the need for holds. A monthly cap limited users to five downloads per month, helping stretch the budget over the course of a year. Since September 2017, the number of Berks County library patrons using hoopla has nearly doubled. The budgeted

fruit, doughnuts and beverages. They will also get a ticket for a chance to win prizes donated by local businesses such as gift cards and gift baskets. “The prize drawing will take place after the race,” noted McFarland. “Each (registrant) will get a shirt and an entry into the drawing.” The 5K will be professionally timed. Awards will be given to the top three overall male and female runners in the 5K, plus the top three finishers in various age groups. “There will also be prize for the most fun and festive outfit,” McFarland pointed out. A registration fee will be collected per person for the 5K and the walk. Students age 17 and under will receive a discount for the 5K. The Coatesville Soccer and Cross-Country Booster Clubs are sponsoring the event. Proceeds will be used to support the teams and to raise money for off-season training and philanthropic activities. For more information about the event or to register, readers may visit ww.runsignup.com/ RRC3. When registering, individuals also have an opportunity to contribute to “Donations for Gabby.” Funds will be used to support Gabby, a senior at CASH and a member of the cross-country team who is battling cancer. More information about the event is also available by visiting www.facebook.com/RedRun Challenge. If the parade is canceled in the event of inclement weather, the run will also be canceled and will not be rescheduled, and there will be no refunds. “We will still do the drawing and people can get their shirts, but there will be no run,” McFarland added. mulled cider and coffee. A highlight of the event will be activities in the mule stable. There, visitors can meet re-enactors portraying ironmaster L. Heber Smith and his bride, Ella Jane Grubb Smith, who moved into the mansion after their wedding in 1868. In June, Joanna Furnace hosted a re-enactment of the couple’s wedding, portrayed by actors from the Genesius Theatre in Reading. “It won’t be the same actor and actress (portraying the couple), but some of the actors from Genesius will come out and stroll the grounds,” said Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. “Our re-enactors will talk about the wedding and holiday customs. The theme will be the couple celebrating their first Christmas together.” There will also be period dances and Victorian parlor games. A traditional large cedar Christmas tree will be on display - just like the one that would have been in the Smith family mansion a century and a half ago. An antique train display will operate in the mechanical technology building, and wagon rides will be offered for a small fee. Face painting will also take place in the heated tent, and, on Dec. 1 only, families can get their picture taken in the Christmas photo booth. Zerr noted that a host of HCVHA volunteers, as well as community groups, make the Christmas at Joanna event possible. For example, members of Boy Scout Troop 543 from Plowville are responsible for preparing, setting up and lighting the thousands of luminarias. “Boy Scout Troop 341 from Alleghenyville will stand the Christmas trees and decorate them,” Zerr added. “Boy Scout Troop 315 from Exeter will hang green roping and wreaths on all the buildings.” Joanna Furnace is located 3 miles north of Morgantown off Route 10. Visitors should access the site via Furnace Road. An admission fee will be charged. Children age 12 and under will be admitted for free. All proceeds will benefit the HCVHA and its work in restoring and maintaining the Joanna Furnace complex. For additional information, readers may visit www.haycreek.org, find the HCVHA on Facebook or call 610-286-0388.

The annual Coatesville Christmas Parade, featuring the Duffy and Quaker City string bands, the Coatesville Red Raiders marching band and cheerleaders, costumed characters and more, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, beginning at 10 a.m. The parade will travel on Lincoln Highway (Business Route 30), starting at Strode Avenue and ending at 11th Avenue. Parade attendees will also be able to watch floats, school groups, Scouts, community groups, customized automobiles and farm tractors, along with representatives from local police departments and fire companies. “There will be lots of fire engines and antique cars with local dignitaries,” noted Marianne Scibek, a member of the parade committee. Costumed characters will be another special feature in the parade. “We will have a Transformers cartoon character that is brand new. The kids will really like that,” Scibek said. “The characters will give out candy and interact with the kids.” Other featured characters will include Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Dalmatian and Scooby Doo. She said representatives from the string bands, which will perform in the annual Mummers Parade in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, are also a
popular attraction because of their unique blend of music and colorful costumes. “Not everyone who appears on New Year’s Day (plays in Coatesville), but they send a good number of players,” Scibek noted. Special honorees will include members of the Coatesville Sports Hall of Fame and local veterans. The grand marshals will be representatives from the Scott Field Project group, an organization that is working to revitalize Coatesville’s Scott Field Stadium. Also on hand will be the Coatesville Area Senior High School Meistersingers, the Philadelphia Eagles Pep Band and Chris Scott, the “Top Chef” contestant from Coatesville. At the end of the parade, Santa Claus will make a special appearance on a Coatesville Fire Department truck to officially usher in the holiday season. The parade will include an automotive competition as well as other contests, including Best Appearing Fire Apparatus, Best Appearing Police Vehicle, Best Appearing Float and Best Appearing Group. The all-volunteer parade committee raises funds year-round by gathering donations and holding fundraisers. “We have a golf outing every year, and we have bowling or a dance at one of the fire houses,” said Scibek. “Sometimes we do dinners out when certain restaurants

Cancellations will be listed at www.coatesvillechristmasparade.com and on the Coatesville Christmas Parade Inc. Facebook page. “The string bands and some of the (musicians who play) wind instruments can’t play in the rain or the snow,” Scibek explained. “Last year it snowed on us a little bit, but we pulled it off.” Scibek said that all the planning and fundraising needed to produce the annual parade on the first Saturday in December is well worth the effort. “It’s so nice to make people happy for a day,” she added. “It puts a smile on your face to be able to make (others) happy.” For more information about the parade, readers may call 610-384-2677 or search for “Coatesville Christmas Parade, Inc.” on Facebook.

Organizers envision the new marketplace as a small Christmas village featuring decorated sheds made by local builders. “Vendors will rent space in the sheds,” explained Vicki Owens. Maryann Oestreich added that a variety of local crafters and artisans have been invited to display their wares. Among the vendors who have signed on to take part are those who make horseradish, lemon curd, jellies, pottery, and repurposed clothing. Organizers hope to have a maker of toys on-site as well. Local neighbors will bring homemade refreshments such as cookies to be served in the West Tenant House. A Chinese auction including items donated by local ven-

Live music during the event will be provided by a group of area flute players, a brass group made up of Garden Spot High School students, and other local musicians. Owens has lined up a number of area businesses to fill the mansion and basement of the Paymaster’s House with specially decorated themed trees. “Some highlight their businesses, and some just do something really beautiful,” explained Ekdahl. Oestreich said many of the beautified trees are unique. Among the many businesses that will decorate this year will be printers, a builder, a landscaper, window and door sellers, two savings banks, a design and interior decorating business,

a therapeutic massage practice, an audiologist, an optometrist, an insurance agency, a personal trainer, and a local publisher. A local dentist who usually decorates the tree with teeth will participate this year, as will a glass blowing shop from St. Peter’s Village. Nonprofit organizations that will take part include Laurel Dance Studio, the Poole Forge Garden Club, the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society, and more. Poole Forge features a renovated 18th-century Welsh Ironmaster’s Mansion, so on the evenings of Dec. 1 and 8, organizers have planned bonfires, caroling, and educational sessions about Welsh customs for visitors to enjoy. Along with the picturesque Ironmaster’s Mansion, Poole Forge includes a covered bridge, the babbling Conestoga Creek, and more. Ever since the nonprofit Historic Poole Forge organization was formed to preserve the site, a variety of activities have been held at the location. There is an admission cost to attend Christmas at the Ironmaster’s. Children under age 12 may enter for free. Groups of 15 or more should call 484-797-5302 for reservations. Tips Shared For Healthier Holidays The American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good initiative offers simple swaps for healthier holidays. The association provides its latest recipes and sciencebacked health tips as part of Eat Smart Month in November. Taking small steps and avoiding one common mistake - putting good habits on hold - is recommended. People may celebrate the season with no regrets by enjoying special occasion foods in moderation and swapping in healthier substitutions when they have control over the menu. To be at one’s peak this holiday season, American Heart Associationapproved recipe hacks are offered. Additional recipes are available at www.heart.org/eatsmartmonth. About 70 percent of the sodium Americans consume comes from processed, prepackaged, or restaurant foods. Reading labels is a simple way to net healthy results. Compare the nutrition facts on similar foods and go for the one with less sodium, including frozen varieties. Salt can be replaced with herbs and spices. Lemon juice, citrus zest, or hot chilies can add extra flavor without the added sodium. Canned fruits packed in juice or water rather than syrup are recommended. Fruit is plenty sweet without added sugars. Overly ripe fruit can be used to sweeten baked goods. Non-fat, plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream is a healthy swap with the same texture and flavor. Instead of butter, a healthier vegetable oil can be used, or people may substitute equal parts unsweetened applesauce when baking. Sneaking in a vegetable like pureed sweet potatoes, carrots, or cauliflower can boost nutrition. Frozen cubes of pureed vegetable can be ready in the freezer. Using half whole wheat and half white flour is also recommended. Whole grains are a great nutritional boost, and mixing the flours helps to disguise the swap. People can sip smarter by adding seasonal fruit to old-fashioned water. There are plenty of ways to jazz up a beverage without adding alcohol. Readers are encouraged to try infusing cranberries, pomegranate arils, or orange slices into sparkling water. To learn more, readers may visit www.heart.org or call 800-AHA-USA1.
