NHAHS To Feature Displays By Ann Mead Ash
Wilbur Horning of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) has not forgotten what it is like to be a child waiting in line to see Santa Claus. “Every December when Christmas on Main is held, Santa Claus visits Kauffman’s,” said Wilbur, referring to Santa’s visits to the NHAHS Museum in the Kauffman building, 207 E. Main St., New Holland, during Christmas on Main, which is held the first Saturday of December. “People go to St. Stephen Church for breakfast, and then the (children) come up here and stand in line and wait to see Santa,” continued Wilbur. “Someone said it would be nice to have a train layout here for the (children) while they’re waiting to see Santa Claus.” Seeking to implement that idea, Wilbur turned to Henry Black of the Garden Spot Village Train Club for help. Black connected him to Tom Hawk, who enlisted Art Johnsen and Art Algeo for help. The trio met with Don Horning of NHAHS to learn more about the area at the museum where the train would run. After considering three different layouts, the club members went to work on a complex double figure eight. It will take four minutes for the train to

In a small bowl, scramble egg. Open and remove the wrapping (not the white rind) and dip into egg mixture. Coat the brie evenly with Panko breadcrumbs, pressing crumbs into brie. Roll ends in breadcrumbs as well. Set aside. Drizzle medium-sized pan with olive oil and heat over medium-high heat until oil is hot. Place brie in pan and fry for several minutes until the breadcrumbs are golden brown. With brie up on its end, gradually rotate brie until ends are cooked, then flip over and cook the other side. Remove from heat and set on serving board. Heat apricot preserves in a pan on low heat (or microwave for 30 seconds at a time). Stir in diced apricots. Pour apricot mixture over brie and serve immediately. For more recipes visit www.goldenbarrel.com.

traverse the entire track. More than 15 of the 23 members of the train club worked on building the HO layout, which is divided into four segments - a farm area, a railroad depot, a downtown area, and an industrial section. There is also a mountain tunnel where the train will disappear and re-emerge from the other side. “Each area gives a different flavor to the overall layout,” said Johnsen. The dairy farm features custom-painted Holstein cows and a laboriously made tiny split rail fence. A custom chain-link fence is also included. “We got signage for local businesses to put on the buildings to make it feel like New Holland,” said Johnsen, who pointed out a building on Main Street that resembles the bank building across from the historical society. “The buildings are clustered similar to the way they are here (in downtown),” said Johnsen, adding that organizers purposely designed the layout to give a feeling of New Holland.” Names of businesses on the buildings in the layout include New Holland Agriculture, Musselman Lumber, Stoltzfus Meats, Yoder’s Country Market, and J.B. Zimmerman. “We were thinking of a little figure eight, but these guys took the

YODER’S GIFT CARDS Make Great Gifts!
Agency Seeks Volunteers By Francine Fulton
Compeer Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community, recently held its 20th annual Friendship Luncheon at Dutch-Way Family Restaurant in Gap. The event is held each year to celebrate the special camaraderie among the compeers, which the dictionary defines as a companion or peer. More than 50 people attended the event, which was led by Donna Kueny, program manager. The guest speaker was Rob Chisholm. “We’d invited Rob to speak since he launched Compeer Chester County in 1999 and served as its first program director for 15 years before retiring,” said Sherry Thompsen, Compeer program coordinator. In his talk, titled “Reflections on 20 Years of Compeer,” Chisholm discussed that while people in recovery from a mental illness are treated by professionals and various therapies, they may lack the support of personal friends. That, he said, is why the Compeer program is so important and successful. “Compeer friendship matches are proven to create connectedness, offering measurable outcomes for both matched partners, such as overcoming feelings of social isolation, loneliness and hopelessness,” he stated. Chisholm remains involved in the program and still maintains two one-to-one Compeer friendships. During the event, the volunteer pairs were recognized, as well as members of the Compeer Advisory Council. The event also included a costume contest. Compeer Chester County is a program of Mental Health Partnerships (MHP), supported by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations. According to Kueny, Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Individuals in the program have been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a therapist or case manager. “People accepted in the program are screened, and they have the support of their mental health professional,” she said. Volunteers, who must be age 18 and over, are required to undergo an interview, get a background check and take part in a training session. Volunteers are asked to meet with their friends for four hours minimum each month for one year. The pairs can share activities such as meeting for lunch or going to a sporting event. As of this month, Thompsen reported that there are 45 Compeer one-to-one matches in Chester County; six calling matches, where pairs talk on the phone; and two e-buddies, where the friends communicate via email or text. “We need volunteers for everywhere in the county,” Kueny said. She mentioned that some volunteers with the program are students at West Chester University. To learn more about Compeer Chester County, readers may contact Kueny at 610-436-4445 or dkueny@mhphope.org. More information, including a volunteer application, is available at www.com peerchesco.org. Readers may also learn more about the organization at www.facebook.com/CompeerChesco.

Ministry from pg 1 When Dave Kling, pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 105 W. Main St., Terre Hill, and Churchtown United Methodist Church, located along Route 23 in Churchtown, took a seminary course in change leadership recently, he found the main project for the class fit nicely with the state of his ministry. “The main project (was) to start a visioning process in the church, which I had planned on doing as part of my annual
goals,” said Kling. “It all dovetailed very nicely.” Kling began working with a team of members from St. Paul’s. “I wanted the team to be made up of folks from different perspectives,” he explained. “And it was,” recalled Linda Saad, who served on the team. “There were some lively conversations.” Working with Mission Insight material provided by the United Methodist Church Conference, the group examined demographics of a 10-mile radius around the
church. “We know age, income, churched or unchurched, attitudes about church,” said Kling. “It’s pretty intensive data,” added Saad. With that information in hand, the team looked at some specific questions regarding St. Paul’s. “We needed to … figure out why we exist,” said Kling. “That was the first question the team had to answer.” In addition to the basic answers, which included being the hands and feet of Christ and making disciples of Jesus, the team members

examined gaps that they could bridge. “What niche in the community could we fill?” asked Kling. “It became obvious very quickly that it was older adult ministry.” “We have a ministry called Seniors Serving Seniors, which started in Churchtown and came over (to St. Paul’s),” noted Kling. The group, which meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m., alternates between the two churches. Members have taken a trip to Wheatland, gone miniature golfing, toured the Moravian Church, and visited Peaceful Valley, a contemplative walk with stations located on North Shirk Road near New Holland. “That was a really big hit,” said Kling, who noted that the group has also done crafts, such as making wreaths from picture frames. St. Paul’s is also home to the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank; hosts an immunization clinic through the Welsh Mountain Medical and Dental Center, beginning at 9 a.m. on the first Tuesday of the month; and has held Christian concerts and community family movie nights. On the schedule for the holidays is a Blue Christmas service on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. in Churchtown and on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s. A GriefShare program called Surviving the Holidays will be held at St. Paul’s on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. St. Paul’s is also considering other activities including a music jam day where area musicians could gather at the church in the afternoon. “It will give the older population a chance to come in and listen and have fellowship and treats,” said Saad. Tai chi gong for seniors is also under consideration. Saad noted that a class might be held outdoors, as St. Paul’s has a scenic view of East Earl. “Ministry goes beyond the sanctuary,” said Saad. “If we can fill gaps, we can help people enjoy fellowship and come together as a group in Christ. We decided (these activities) would be a unique way to bring folks in for the fellowship and community.” St. Paul’s is also looking forward to celebrating its 185th anniversary in 2020, with a special jubilee service planned for Sunday, May 24. “We will have historical displays, and the Terre Hill Historical Society will be here,” noted Saad, who added that Kling will discuss the history of the church and that the quartet Brothers in Grace will play. Readers who would like to know more about St. Paul’s may search for “Terre Hill St. Paul’s UMC” on Facebook or call 717-445-5512. Pictured on front: Pastor Dave Kling (left) and Linda Saad (right), holding Fuzz, are looking forward to the many activities St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Terre Hill, is planning as part of a ministry to area seniors.

The all-volunteer parade committee raises funds yearround by gathering donations and holding fundraisers. “We have a golf outing every year, and Penn Medicine came on board (as a sponsor) this year, and really helped us a lot,” said Scibek.
