Chester County receives national award The Chester County Department of Community Development has received an Award of Excellence from the National Association for County Community and Economic Development (NACCED) for the creation of its Affordable Housing Developer Collaborative. The award, announced at the NACCED conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, was presented to Chester County, citing the efforts of the county’s Partnership to End Homelessness initiative to bring together property developers and organizations to find ways to create more affordable housing options. As the award announcement noted, “Chester County’s Affordable Housing Developer
Collaborative brought together regional groups to address geographically-specific needs, leading to new partnerships with property developers, nonprofits and municipalities to discover opportunities (for affordable housing) that otherwise may have been dismissed.” In 2022, the Chester County commissioners pledged a commitment to the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s House America initiative, with a goal of adding 1,000 affordable units in the county over 10 years. To read more about the housing support programs in Chester County and the Chester County Partnership to End Homelessness, visit www.chesco.org/housing.

All of these projects are in partnership with other individuals and groups, including Chester County, Delaware County, municipalities, schools, watershed associations, con-

Displaying the award are (from left) Chester County Department of Community Development Planning supervisor Trish Hennessy, deputy director Shaun Bollig and director Dolores Colligan.
Extensions from pg 5 numerous riparian buffers, including three that will provide live stakes for future streambank repair workshops. All of these projects are in partnership with other individuals and groups, including Chester County, Delaware County, municipalities, schools, watershed associations, con-
servation groups, and friends of groups. The increased volunteer membership and activities created a need for additional staff support. By creating two full-time positions, the MG and MWS programs can continue growing and expanding outreach offerings in local communities.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will sponsor the Litter Hawk Youth Award Program, a recognition program for students in kindergarten through grade six who complete a designated project specific to their grade level. Students can participate individually or as part of a lesson initiated by schools, homeschools, Scout troops, 4-H clubs, environmental clubs or other organized groups. The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program is a way for
youngsters to share their hope, optimism, and concerns about litter and to inspire others to care for their communities through art, words, or video. In coordination of the release of the revision of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s popular “Children Open your Eyes to Litter” series of books for children in kindergarten through grade six, the theme is “Open Your Eyes to Litter - Show Us What You See.” Projects include a poster for
children in kindergarten through grade four, an essay for children in grade five and a video for children in grade six. The deadline to participate is Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024. First- and second-place winners will be awarded prizes in each grade level. All participants will receive recognition of participation. Winners will be announced in May 2024 in coordination with a display of winning entries at the Pennsylvania State Capitol
building. The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program was created with funding provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. For more information, downloadable promotional posters, and an online entry form, visit www.keeppabeautiful.org and select Awards under Grants & Awards. For more details, contact Stephanie Larson at slarson@keeppabeautiful.org or 724-836-4121, ext. 104.
