Chester County Government recently announced the results of its most recent Chester County Quality of Life Survey, a survey of citizen priorities and service satisfaction conducted every five years. The surveys help form the basis of the Chester County Commissioners’ Strategic Plan goals. Results of the latest survey, conducted by West Chester University’s Center for Social and Economic Policy Research, are based on a random sample of 1,703 responses, representing all areas of Chester County. The survey showed that 94% of residents believe Chester County is an excellent or good place to live and raise a family, and that maintaining the quality of water, preserving open space, and managing population growth remain top areas of importance. The survey reported that nine out of 10 people rate the county as an excellent or good place to obtain a good education, and 83% describe Chester County as an excellent or good place to participate in community affairs and activities. The percentage of residents indicating that Chester County is an excellent place to find a job increased from 21% in 2018 to 30% in 2023. When it comes to services provided by Chester County Government, the areas of highest importance to survey respondents include emergency services and the 911 system, open space preservation, county parks and trails, voter services and flood and stormwater planning and control. Regarding the county’s performance in providing services, 70% or greater positive (excellent or good) responses were garnered for maintaining county parks and trails, ensuring public safety, managing the election process, and providing park programs. Seventy-six percent of survey respondents rated the county government’s management of the election process as excellent or good. In addition, the survey addressed the performance of Chester County Government employees. Of all res-

Sen. Carolyn Comitta (right) welcomes Donna and Matt Imbierowicz to the Pennsylvania Senate in recognition of Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month.

State Sen. Carolyn Comitta recently joined members of the Carly Imbierowicz Foundation to warn residents and families of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning during November, which is observed as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month. Carbon monoxide, more commonly referred to as CO, is a highly toxic gas, produced by devices that

burn fuels like vehicles, furnaces, generators, grills and many others that are found in everyday life. According to the National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Association, it is responsible for 50,000 visits to the emergency room each year, and tragically, 1,200 deaths. One of those was 16-yearold Carly Marie Imbierowicz See Awareness pg 4

Comitta and the Carly Imbierowicz Foundation also encourage residents to educate themselves on the dangers of carbon monoxide, offering the following tips: Have heaters and gas-burning appliances regularly inspected to make sure they are safe. Install carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of a home and near any gas-burning appliance. People should make sure that their vehicle’s exhaust pipe is free of snow, mud, leaves or debris. Shortly after his diagnosis, Richie, who recently turned 6 years old, began a series of chemotherapy and stem cell treatments at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in Hershey. He remained at the hospital several months as he received treatment. Richie returned home for a few weeks in August before traveling back to Hershey for a final round of highdose chemotherapy. Due to health complications that resulted from the treatments, Richie required a specialized series of proton radiation doses. On Oct. 13, Richie was moved to the Roberts Proton Therapy Center located at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The facility is the only hospital in the area that offers the unique See Richie pg 8

The top overall male winner was Noah Taylor, 20, of Mohnton with a time of 17 minutes, 37 seconds. The top overall female winner was Aubrey Ressler, 15, of New Holland with a time of 20:53. “This was (Taylor’s) third year in a row to take the top spot, his fourth time (in) total. This was (Ressler’s) second year in a row to take the top spot for females,” Gregory said. Gregory reported that there were 493 finishers in the 5K race and 111 finishers in the 1-mile fun run. “(The youngsters) all did a

great job in their race, even the real young ones who pushed through to the finish line,” he said. “A number of parents and grandparents ran alongside the young ones, encouraging them on.” The top overall male finisher in the 1-mile event was Caleb Sensenig, 8, of Gap, with a time of 6:40. Participants in the Turkey Bowl held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat have run through stormy weather, rain, fog and even snow flurries, but this year’s weather on Nov. 23 was ideal. “We had a beautiful morning for our 32nd annual Turkey Bowl race. The weather was beautiful this year, probably the best I’ve ever seen, which helped to encourage more runners to sign up,” said Bruce Gregory, camp director. “We had (more than 600) participants this year - up quite a bit from last year’s 480.” He noted that those who attended the event, which featured a 5K race and a 1-mile children’s fun run, included new people as well as those who attend the event annually. “We are grateful to all of those who have made this a family tradition. I am even beginning to see the third generation joining the race now,” Gregory stated. “We also saw many new runners this year.” Chip timing for the day was provided by Second Wind Race Timing. “We chipped both the 5K race and the 1-mile children’s fun run again this year,” said Gregory. “Our turkey mascot was here again, and the kids enjoyed taking photos with him. procedure, and Richie was moved quickly to decrease the chance of his tumors returning. As of Nov. 28, he had received seven of 30 proton radiation doses. On Nov. 7, Desiree created a post in Prayers for Richie to update its members on the development in her son’s treatment. In the post, Desiree asked Richie’s supporters to help her with an idea to cheer Richie up by helping him have his best Christmas yet. Since the diagnosis in February, he has spent almost the entire year receiving treatment, and he will remain in the hospital until after the holidays, so Desiree asked members of the group to send Richie a Christmas card. “The cards are to cheer him up and show him people are still praying for him and rooting for him to get better,” Desiree said. Less than a week after she made the post, Christmas cards addressed to Richie began to pour into the Metzlers’ mailbox. Richie’s family members, friends and classmates from the Wee Friends Preschool in Quarryville expressed

Cooking-related fire safety tips posted According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking is the leading cause of home fires, with nearly half of all home fires involving cooking equipment; cooking is also the leading cause of home fire injuries. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home cooking fires and related deaths. NFPA has provided a variety of tips related to fire prevention when cooking. Always keep a close

eye on the food that is cooking. For foods with longer cook times, such as those that are simmering or baking, set a timer to help monitor them carefully. Also, do not leave the kitchen while food is cooking, and minimize distractions. Clear the cooking area of anything that can burn, such as dish towels, oven mitts, food packaging, and paper towels. Turn pot handles toward the back of the

stove. Also, keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Create a kid-free and pet-free zone of at least 3 feet around the cooking area and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried. To learn more, visit www.fpw.org. The Pennsylvania Association of Community Health Centers (PACHC) was awarded a $91,500 grant from the Highmark Foundation with a $20,000 donation from Highmark Wholecare to support a Maternal Self-Measured Blood Pressure (SMBP) Learning Collaborative for three health centers in PACHC’s network - ChesPenn Health Services, Hamilton Health Center, and Primary Health Network. PACHC is working with the Health Federation of Philadelphia (HFP) to provide technical support on the development of an SMBP program in these health centers for women

who are within two years postpartum. This project will address barriers to care, such as transportation and child care, and re-engage postpartum women with primary care. Ultimately, it will seek to address the issue of maternal mortality, which includes women dying in the postpartum period and disproportionately affects women of color across the commonwealth. The health centers are developing SMBP program implementation plans and will offer several educational sessions presented by subject matter experts. Participating health centers will receive a $25,000 stipend to support staffing,
