Skin Protection Information Posted RSO Sets New Year’s Eve Show to 80 percent of the sun’s UV light, so the rays hit twice, further increasing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging. UVA rays remain constant throughout the year and can penetrate through clouds and fog. UVA rays can also penetrate glass, so it is still possible to damage skin while spending a bright winter day indoors. The first line of defense against this sun damage is clothing. Covering up is easier in the winter, because it is cold, but the face, head, and neck tend to remain exposed year-round, and this is where most skin cancers occur. People should not forget their UV-blocking sunglasses

A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher should be applied daily to all exposed skin. People should make sure to cover often-missed spots like the tops of their ears, around the eyes, and near the hairline. Individuals should consider choosing a moisturizing sunscreen with ingredients like lanolin or glycerin to combat dry winter skin. Finally, people should try to avoid the peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and seek shade when they can. For more information, readers may visit www.skin cancer.org.

It is easy to associate vigilant sun protection with summertime, when the sun is shining intensely. However, sun protection is necessary every day, regardless of the weather or time of year. Even when it is cold or overcast, UV rays that cause skin aging and skin cancer are reaching the skin. In the right winter weather conditions, people can sustain sun damage just as easily as during the summer. UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn, are the strongest in the summer. However, UVB rays can burn and damage skin yearround, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces such as snow or ice. Snow reflects up
Church Posts Dramatic Presentation Cornerstone Bible Church, 529 Lauschtown Road, Bowmansville, will host “Christmas Through the Ages,” a dramatic and musical presentation by Piercing Word, on Sunday, Dec. 23, at 6 p.m. Audience members will see the story of Christ’s birth passed down through the ages from Luke to a medieval monk to Victorian carolers to a modern-day mother and child decorating for Christmas. The actors’ lines are taken word-for-word from Luke 1-2 and other passages of Scripture. The show features original music as well as selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” including the “Hallelujah” chorus. There will be an opportunity to make freewill donation at the end of the performance. Piercing Word has been performing Scripture-based performances since 2007. “Christmas Through the Ages” is quadruplecast to enable its presentation at 37 locations across Lancaster County and beyond this Christmas season. Piercing Word’s mission is to “ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church.” Piercing Word challenges everyone to memorize Scripture, and the group aims to equip people to do so by providing memorization workshops and discipleship programs. For more information about the performance at Cornerstone, readers may contact pastor Jahn M. Horgen at 717-445-0582.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has announced the results of the 2018 Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Great American Cleanup of PA that runs annually from March 1 through May 31. The event engaged 108,638 volunteers in 5,362 events across the state that focused on community greening, beautification, and cleanups. Organized groups, civic organizations, families, and friends took to Pennsylvania parks, trails, and streets to reclaim communities by picking up more than 5 million pounds of trash and planting 10,979 flowers, bulbs, and other plants in an effort to keep Pennsylvania beautiful. As in years past, all 67 counties participated in this annual community improvement event. Registration for the 2019 Great American Cleanup of PA will open in January. During this period, events registered through www.gacofpa.org will receive free bags, gloves, and vests from PennDOT District offices, as supplies last. As part of this event, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association will sponsor Let’s Pick It Up PA - Everyday from Saturday, April 13, through Monday, May 6, 2019. During Pick It Up PA Days, registered events will be able to take the trash collected during their cleanup to participating landfills for free or reduced cost. money they bring in and spend each month so they can get a clear picture of their spending habits. The audit may help people make smart choices in regard to spending and saving. 3. Eradicate existing debt. One of the key parts of a financial plan is to pay down high-interest debt to free up money for the future. Focus on paying off credit card balances, high-interest loans, or balances for other accounts where interest is high. People who are having trouble paying down high-interest debt may consider a debt consolidation loan. 4. Start saving. Building savings is essential to reaching many goals. It also is key to avoiding financial ruin during emergency situations, such as home or car repairs or a disability that causes time off work. People should start small by having a certain percentage of money deposited into a separate account automatically. Investing in the right products also can help people grow their savings.

A clear understanding of personal expenditures and savings rates is essential for securing a strong financial future. People may establish this understanding through the creation of a financial plan, which, according to the Financial Planning Association, identifies goals and objectives that take finances to achieve and creates a plan for making those things happen. Financial advisers may assist in the creation of these plans. When creating financial plans, people should use the following steps. 1. Identify goals. People should consider what they want to achieve, such as buying a home, retiring early, providing for a child’s education, or having more time and money for travel. Putting goals on paper may inspire people to pursue them more vigorously. 2. Conduct a financial audit. People should make a list of all their assets and then subtract existing debts to figure out their net worth. While tabulating, they should find out how much

Roberts, board chair of LeadingAge and the awards committee, the award is given to recognize programs for their innovation and excellence. Garden Spot Communities was chosen for the award because its leadership team recognized the need for affordable housing for older adults on fixed incomes, explored different opportunities and concepts to develop a Cooperative Living House and partnered with the local community to build the home. Members of the New Holland and greater Lancaster community helped to build the home by donating funds and materials and volunteering. Garden Spot CEO Steve Lindsey believes that the Cooperative Living House is a project that can be scalable for the future. Garden Spot Village welcomed the first residents to Thistledown in March.

3. Keep the family active. When children are out of school, parents are encouraged to squeeze in some active chores and trips to the park. The video game marathon can be broken up with a physical activity break. Everyone can take advantage of cooler weather to get moving outdoors. 4. Sip smarter. Sugary beverages, including sodas, energy and sports beverages, sweet tea, lemonade, and coffee beverages, can be replaced with water or unsweetened tea and coffee to avoid excess calories. To make the switch easier, people can cut back the amount of sweetener gradually until their taste adjusts. 5. Give oneself the gift of peace. When the invitations pile up, individuals should not be afraid to say no to some of them. If some down time is needed to recharge for the next party, take a break. Do something relaxing, like doing yoga or meditation, reading, taking a warm bath, or spending time in nature. 6. Keep portions in check. People can enjoy favorites without overeating. People are encouraged to put less on their plate and pass on that second helping. Another strategy is to split appetizers, entrees, and desserts with others. Standard portions can be divided into halves or quarters before serving. Using smaller plates when possible will make the plates look fuller. 7. People are encouraged to be their own barista and opt for

less-sweet homemade versions of sugary coffee beverages, hot chocolate, and other holiday beverages. Marshmallows and whipped cream can be swapped out with steamed or frothed low-fat milk. 8. Keep up healthy habits. People can commit to staying healthy during the holidays. For example: “For the next three weeks, I will move more and do something active every day, have a healthy breakfast and limit the sweets, and get at least seven hours of sleep each night.” If someone does not completely give up their healthy habits, they will not feel like they have to start all over once the holidays are in the rear-view mirror. 9. For holiday eating events, whether potluck or not, people can offer to contribute a lighter, healthier dish. That way, there will be at least one better-for-you option. 10. If alcohol is being served at a holiday event, individuals should alternate each glass with a glass of water. This will quench their thirst and fill them up so they will be less likely to overindulge. Non-alcoholic versions of beverages can be enjoyed to lower the calorie count. It is important to watch out for added sugars. 11. People should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Individuals should not let their wake-up time and bedtime get too far off their regular schedule. People should nap when needed and ditch the digital devices at night. 12. Treat oneself. People can try bite-size tastes or split portions of desserts and other holiday treats or choose fresh fruit for dessert. Seasonal fruits make great gifts, too. 13. Remember, the healthiest thing a person can drink is water People are encouraged to make it their go-to choice when they are feeling thirsty. Extra appeal can be created by adding fresh or frozen fruits, herbs, or a splash of 100 percent fruit juice. 14. Seasonal fruits and vegetables can give meals, snacks, and party dishes that healthy holiday spirit. Apples, dates, leafy greens, pears, pumpkin, root vegetables, sweet potatoes, and winter squash are healthy options. 15. People can make beverages sparkle by trying seltzer, club soda, or sparkling water for the fizz. For a
festive holiday look, beverages can be garnished with whole cranberries and mint leaves. 16. People should find the time to fit in fitness. People are encouraged to try to stay committed to their workouts when the holidays kick into high gear. But when a full social calendar gets in the way, people should try to squeeze some healthy activity like walking into their daily routine. People are also encouraged to do something active with the whole family. 17. If it is just not Christmas without eggnog, try a low-fat version or mix it with an equal amount of low-fat or nonfat milk. People can still get the flavor without as many calories. 18. Many holiday dishes can be packed with sodium. Breads, poultry, and canned soups are three common foods that can be loaded with salt. When shopping
for ingredients to prepare their holiday meal, compare the labels and choose options with the lowest amount of sodium. Herbs and spices (like rosemary and cloves) can be used to flavor dishes instead of salt. 19. Spices can be used to flavor foods and beverages with less sugar. For example, a skinny hot apple cider can be made with unsweetened apple juice and plenty of cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg. Garnish with whole cinnamon sticks. 20. Focus on being present instead of buying presents. When holiday stress starts to get to people, the two simple practices of mindfulness and gratitude can help. People are encouraged to focus on what they are doing right now and what they are thankful for. Slow down, take it one step at a time, and make wellbeing a priority.

“Messiah” Sing-Along Set For Dec. 28 The Chester County Christian Chorale will present the 32nd annual Chester County “Messiah” Sing-Along on Friday, Dec. 28, at 7 p.m. at Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1121 Octorara Trail, Parkesburg. Area residents are invited to attend to sing or listen during the performance. Participating singers, who do not rehearse in advance, will be accompanied by a professional 16-piece orchestra. The sing-along will also feature professional soloists, including Heidi Shannon, soprano; Heidi Kurtz, mezzo soprano; Timothy Bentch, tenor; and Mark Moliterno, bass. The guest conductor will be Marcella Hostetler, Campus Chorale director at Lancaster Mennonite School. Complete biographies and photos of the soloists can be found at www.messiahsing along.com/the-artists. The Chester County Christian Chorale was founded in 1976 by Clair Leaman, who wanted to provide local singers an opportunity to sing with a professional orchestra and soloists, who are hired prior to the performance. On the night of the sing-along,
members of the community who would like to sing in the choir are asked to arrive at the church at 6:30 p.m. Attire is business casual. Singers will then be organized by voice part. Leaman noted that between 130 to 150 singers generally take part. According to www.messiahsingalong.com, the full “Messiah” by G.F. Handel is organized into three parts. The first part covers Christ’s birth and fulfillment of prophecy, and the second part focuses on Christ’s suffering and death. The third part concludes with triumph over sin and death through the Resurrection. Leaman explained that at Christmastime, the Chester County sing-along covers all of the first part, sections of the second part and excerpts of the third part of the score. A Lancaster County sing-along is also offered at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster during the Easter season. That program begins with the overture and then includes all of parts two and three. During the “Hallelujah” chorus, the audience is encouraged to stand and sing with the vocalists. Both performances are open to anyone who wants to sing or

The timing of the events is designed not to interfere with Christmas and Easter schedules and to occur when professional musicians are less busy. At the event on Dec. 28, Carol Stevens and Grace McConkie will provide American Sign Language interpretation at Stevens’ suggestion. “The signers are really important,” said Leaman. “It started because Stevens came to one of the sing-alongs and she came up to me afterward (and mentioned having signers), and we have had signers ever since at both venues. “ We may have people who can’t hear, (and also) others love it because it adds something,” Leaman added. Leaman encourages vocalists who wish to take part to practice using the “Learn and Practice
Your Voice Part” link at www.messiahsingalong.com. Singers may rent or purchase music to use at the event. The event is free and open to the public. Early seating is advised. A freewill offering will be received to help finance the cost of the event. The concert is supported by local businesses, as well as the Huston Foundation, the Robert Carwithen Music Foundation, the J.S. Herr Foundation, the James M. and Lois B. Making Lighting Displays Safer and 2014, fire departments in the United States responded to an average of 210 home fires that started with Christmas trees. Lighting displays strung on home exteriors also can pose safety risks if homeowners do not exercise caution. Lighting displays are one of the many things that help make the holiday season a special time of year. Holiday lighting displays present a perfect opportunity for communities and individuals to showcase their festive sides. Safety should always be a priority when stringing holiday lights both inside and outside a home. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) notes that each year between 2009
going on trees inside a home and those being strung outside, should be inspected prior to being strung. Owners should look for any worn or broken cords and replace any defected lights. W hen stringing lights, individuals should always work with at least one other person. This makes it safe for homeowners who must climb ladders to string lights on especially tall trees and/or on their home exteriors. People should avoid working outdoors in inclement weather. The weather during the holiday season can sometimes be unpleasant or unpredictable. People should check the forecast before stringing exterior lights to ensure Mother Nature will not pose a threat. They should avoid hanging lights if the forecast predicts wet, icy, or windy conditions that can make ladders unstable. Individuals should turn lights off when going to bed and/or leaving the house. Interior and exterior holiday lights should not be left on when no one is home or everyone inside is sleeping. If left on overnight or when no one is home, lights may contribute to fires that damage homes and may even prove fatal. Holiday lighting displays help make this time of year special. Following some simple safety procedures when decorating with lights can ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday season.

Holiday Tree Tips remain so throughout the season. If it is not possible to cut one’s own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided. The Tree Care Industry Association advises consumers to protect their Christmas trees as they transport them home. The tree should be wrapped in a plastic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season. Pre-cut trees should be cut again before leaving the lot. Pre-cut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the
lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they will need to make it through the season when they get home. To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, the tree should be placed in water the moment it gets home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the water in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses trees likely will not need their stands filled more than once per day. The tree should be placed away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.

Natural Christmas tree aficionados love the authenticity such trees provide during the holiday season. Natural trees also provide a unique aroma that can make holiday celebrations feel more homey. A few simple strategies can help holiday revelers ensure their Christmas trees make it through the holiday season unscathed. When purchasing natural trees, holiday celebrants, especially those who like to buy their trees in early December, may be concerned about keeping their trees fresh throughout the holiday season. Several tips can help trees last until the final present is unwrapped and the last of the egg nog has been consumed. The first tip is to buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, people should cut their own trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will

Successful financial plans often begin with the creation of a budget. A budget is an estimate of income and expenses in a given period of time. Budgets help with long-term goals like paying off a mortgage or sending a child to college as well as short-term goals like financing a dream vacation. Not all budgets are alike, and when people hear the word budget, they may get apprehensive. Budgeting may require making some concessions in regard to spending habits, but it does not have to put a complete damper on plans. In fact, with a budget in hand, people may be more free to spend, because they will have a stronger grasp of their financial situation. To make a budget, people should start by listing their necessities. They should calculate the costs associated with fixed needs, including rent/mortgage, utilities, food, and any other bills that have to be paid each month. Existing debt should then be added. Debt includes any routine payments being made in connection with credit cards, student loans, car payments, or unpaid medical bills. A spending analysis should be conducted over several months. Budgets are easier with fixed numbers, but unforeseen variables can affect spending every month. These can include clothing, entertainment, and more. The cost of these expenses should be averaged throughout the analysis period so one can get some idea of how much to allocate for them. Software or apps can be used to help. There are plenty of resources available to help people calculate their budgets and get a picture of their financial habits. Resources such as Mint, You Need a Budget (YNAB), and various accounting programs can produce spreadsheets, pie charts, and bar graphs as a budget is created. People are encouraged to start trimming gradually. Quitting a certain lifestyle cold turkey can be jarring. People should gradually cut back on spending if the analysis suggests that is the way to go. Saving should be automated. Immediately removing a set amount from paychecks by having it directly deposited into a separate account can remove the temptation of spending too much. Budgets are a key part of a financial plan and can help people reach their goals.

Money-Saving Advice Posted Rather than succumb to cabin fever, people can use the winter months to visit area stores and score a few deals. December and January are great times to grab steep discounts on an array of products. Savvy shoppers understand that key items go on sale at specific points throughout the year. Learning how to shop the sales can lead to considerable savings. Toys are perhaps the best items to purchase in December. Apart from buying Christmas gifts, people may stock up on toys children have coveted, which can be put

away for birthday presents or other occasions. Retailers tend to lower toy prices as Christmas approaches. Decorative holiday items also tend to be heavily discounted in December. Stores slash prices on ornaments, gift wrap, artificial trees, holiday-themed baking items and more. If an item has even a slight connection to the holidays, stores may cut the item’s price by 50 percent or more once Christmas is over. It is possible to find discounted televisions even after the Black Friday sales have come and gone. Peo-

ple should look at the circulars and buy items when sales are advertised, as inventory may be limited. As the winter progresses, the amount of clothing stock in stores starts to dwindle to free up room for a new season’s worth of attire. Starting in late December and continuing through late January, retailers are eager to liquidate their stock of scarves, sweaters, boots and winter coats. This is a prime time to replenish wardrobes. Sales on linens, also known as white sales, are traditionally held in January, with home goods
retailers offering discounts all month long. These sales generally encompass towels, bed sheets, curtains and other linens. January is the ideal time to purchase a new gym membership or fitness equipment since these purchases tie into New Year’s resolutions to get fit. Gyms may waive some fees or offer discounted rates. Most people return home after the holidays, and that can generate a slow travel season afterward. The travel industry attracts new customers with discounted hotel rates and other deals. Tickets to Broadway shows and other events also may be discounted to encourage people to leave the house.
Toy Safety Tips Given Prevent Blindness, a nonprofit eye health organization, recommends Christmas gift buyers make safety a priority. To help shoppers select appropriate gifts this holiday season, Prevent Blindness has declared December as Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month. Prevent Blindness offers tips and suggestions with safety in mind. Safety tips include reading all warnings and instructions on the box; asking if a toy is right for a child’s ability and age; considering whether other smaller children may be in the home and may have access to the toy; avoiding
