Continuing a call for assistance and protection of women, the Chester County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) led a winter holiday project, Lights On for the Holidays, to benefit the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC). Joined by women’s service sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha-Iota Tau Omega and WSFS, members of the CCSO provided donations to help provide electricity at safe houses and offices of DVCCC.
Throughout the year, one role of deputies at the CCSO is to serve Protection From Abuse orders, which are intended to provide protective relief by prohibiting abusers from contacting survivors and their children. Sometimes, survivors are forced to leave their homes for safety and end up at an emergency shelter or transitional home. Although men are sometimes abused, the majority of survivors are women.
Dolly Wideman-Scott, CEO of DVCCC, noted that survivors often face a life-threatening dilemma: stay with the abuser or become homeless. They may not have the money or established credit to pay for mortgage or rent, utilities, food and other basic necessities.
DVCCC offers an emergency shelter, transitional housing and independent housing.
For more information, call DVCCC’s 24-hour, free hotline at 610-431-1430. Anyone in immediate danger should call or text 911.

Johnson To Head County Department
After serving for 10 years as the second in command of the Department of Drug & Alcohol Services (D&A), Jamie Johnson was named as the new director by the Chester County commissioners named upon the retirement of Vince Brown. Brown worked in D&A for 32 years, the last 10 as its director. Commissioner Josh Maxwell noted that Johnson was involved in launching Chester County’s Law Enforcement Treatment Initiative earlier in 2022.
As the director of D&A, Johnson will verify that programs and case management meet state and federal regulations, oversee spending, and ensure that the department continues to serve the needs of Chester
County residents. D&A supports numerous events each year, including the Chester County Color 5K, which raises funds for the Community Outreach Prevention and Education (COPE) program; Recovery Month; International Overdose Awareness Day; Alcohol Awareness Month; and naloxone training.
Johnson has resided in the Borough of West Chester for over 35 years and is also an animal advocate.
Anyone who is struggling with a substance use disorder or who has a loved one with such a disorder may call the D&A information and referral helpline at 866-286-3767 or Get Help Now, a 24/7 hotline, at 800-662-4357.
Ways To Make Meals Healthier
Cooking foods at home is one way people may gain greater control over personal health. When people cook at home, they can know precisely what they are putting into their body each day. Cooking one’s own meals also enables individuals to customize
recipes so they align with any dietary restrictions or personal preferences they may have.
Increased creativity and confidence in the kitchen, as well as the fact that cooking at home helps to save money and enables one to eat
healthier, is driving the ongoing increase in dining in.
When cooking at home, cooks can consider various tips to make meals that much healthier. Small dietary changes can add up to big health benefits.
Increasing fiber intake
makes meals healthier. Fiber improves bowel regularity and helps a person feel full between meals. High-fiber foods also help stabilize blood sugar levels. Two servings of fibrous foods at each meal and an additional fiber-rich snack each day

can ensure the body is getting the fiber it needs.
Individuals should strive to slow the pace at which they eat. The pace at which a person eats a meal can affect his or her overall health. Healthline reports that fast eaters are more likely to eat more and have higher body mass indexes than slow eaters.
Whenever possible, individuals should choose whole grains. Choosing whole grain breads or
cereals over refined grains can make for a more nutritious diet. Whole grains are linked to a reduced risk for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
As a healthier option, Greek yogurt should be swapped for other varieties. Greek yogurt contains up to twice as much protein as regular yogurt, providing roughly 10 grams per 3.5 ounces. Protein along with fiber helps a person feel fuller longer, which can manage appetite and reduce overeating. Greek yogurt also can replace mayonnaise or sour cream in certain recipes.
It is important to add a vegetable to every meal. Vegetables are loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. Plus,
they tend to be high in antioxidants that strengthen the immune system.
While a person should minimize the amount of oils and other fats used during the cooking process, when it is necessary for a recipe, individuals should select the best fat possible. Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat that is packed with antioxidant polyphenols. It is considered a heart-healthy oil, and it may promote a healthy brain and memory function.
Cutting out sweetened beverages is another strategy for healthier eating. Sodas and other sweetened drinks are leading sources of added sugar in diets. Opting for water or naturally sweetened fruit juices can improve overall health.
School Bus Stop Safety Tips Posted
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently reinforced the importance of school transportation safety and highlighted the potential school transportation challenges posed by changing daylight conditions.
The results of Operation Safe Stop, an annual school bus enforcement and education initiative that was held on Oct. 19, were also announced.
Operation Safe Stop data revealed that participating school districts and law enforcement agencies reported witnessing 155 violations of the law, down from the 252 reported last year. The initiative is held in conjunction with local and state police departments, school districts, and pupil transportation providers to conduct enforcement, raise public awareness about the consequences of improper passing of school buses, and reduce occurrences.
The School Bus Stopping Law requires motorists to stop at least 10 feet from the bus when approaching a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Motorists approaching from all directions are required to stop. The only exception to this law is when motorists encounter a school bus stopping on the opposite side of a divided highway when lanes of the highway are clearly separated by a divider, such as a concrete barrier or grassy median.
Some safety tips for students to remember while waiting for or loading and unloading the bus include getting to the school bus stop five minutes early, so they will not have to run across the road to catch the bus. When waiting for the bus, students should stay away from traffic. Students should line up at least five giant steps away from the curb or the roadway to wait for the bus. Children should never run after the school bus if it has already left the bus stop. Children should never push when getting on or off the school bus.
For more information about school bus safety, visit www.dmv.pa.gov and search for “School Bus Safety Tips.”
Benchmark FCU
Donation
For an 11th consecutive year, employees of Benchmark Federal Credit Union (FCU) spearheaded a donation drive to benefit a Chester County nonprofit in need. Benchmark FCU recently presented a check for $2,022 to The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County. Employees raised the funds in 2022 by making contributions each time they wore jeans on Casual Fridays, and Benchmark FCU matched those contributions.
Benchmark FCU president and CEO Daniel Machon Jr. presented the donation to The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County CEO Christine Zaccarelli at Benchmark’s headquarters in West Chester. Also taking part in the check presentation were Chris Breslin, Benchmark FCU’s vice president of retail services; Donna Rastadter, teller; Barbara McClay, senior EFT ACH processor;
and Suzanne Herr, senior loan officer.
This year, Benchmark FCU staff members chose The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County as its recipient because of the organization’s ongoing efforts to provide counseling, advocacy, resources and education to victims of crime in Chester County. Major services include a 24-hour hotline for sexual assault victims at 610692-7273 and victims of other crimes at 610-6927420. Benchmark also sponsored the organization’s Race Against Violence and Fourth Annual BBQ 911. The Crime Victims’ Center will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2023 and relies on donations, which can be made anytime at www.cvcofcc.org/donate.
Last year, Benchmark FCU made its Casual Fridays donation to Chester County Food Bank. Additional previous
recipients have included Friends Association, The Arc of Chester County, Family Lives On Foundation, Good Samaritan Services, Cuddle My Kids, Home of the Sparrow and Lord’s Pantry. Benchmark was honored with the 2021 Corporate Partner Award by The Arc of Chester County and named 2020 Business of the Year by the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce.
Since 1940, Benchmark FCU has evolved to provide its members with complete financial services, including free checking accounts, vacation and holiday club accounts, loans, certificates, money market accounts and individual retirement accounts. The holiday season is a special time of year. Individuals often spend a little more on gifts, indulge a little more on rich foods and treats, and make a concerted effort to enjoy more time with their loved ones during the holidays.
The tendency to overdo things during the holiday season can create a lot of waste. In fact, Americans produce 25% more garbage from Thanksgiving through the end of the year, according to Waste Advantage magazine, a publication of the waste and recycling industry. That uptick equates to 1 million tons of extra trash per week throughout the holidays.
Extra food, plastic, and paper waste is generated this time of year, but people can be mindful of the potential to go overboard and take some
steps to be more waste-conscious as they entertain.
People can reuse a small portion of wrapping paper or look for other wrapping items. Sunday comics, newsprint, colorful magazine pages, and even pieces of fabric can be used to wrap gifts in lieu of new wrapping paper. Otherwise, individuals can collect used wrapping paper and reuse it next year, doing the same with boxes and bows. According to researchers at Stanford University, if every American family wrapped just three presents in reused materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields.
Another option is to skip disposable party items. It is certainly easy to use disposable plates, napkins, and cups when hosting holiday parties,
but that is very wasteful. Hosts should opt for durable, reusable products that can be packed away and used each year during holiday events.
People can reduce waste by buying durable and reusable items as gifts. Gift-givers are encouraged to avoid fad gifts and focus on items that will have staying power. Homemade gifts, such as foods, knitted scarves, artwork, and more, are generally eco-friendly.
It is important to set up marked trash and recycling receptacles. To remind party guests to recycle the appropriate materials, hosts should clearly mark a pail designed for collecting recyclables, such as cans, plastic beverage bottles, and glass bottles. Most hard plastics can be recycled.
Another way to save waste is to have one’s name removed
from catalog lists. To do so, individuals need to call companies and ask to be taken off promotional mailing lists to reduce paper waste.
Instead of holiday cards, people are encouraged to send a photo. When mailing photos of the kids or the entire family in lieu of cards, recipients are apt to save the photos and display them, helping to keep even more paper trash out of landfills.
Another waste-saving strategy is to research new recipes for leftovers. With an abundance of food remaining after entertaining, leftovers can be turned into new meals by exploring recipes from friends or by doing a little research online.
Waste can get out of control during the holidays, but there are ways to tame the excess.

Baking is a tradition in many households, and goodies include cakes, pies, and cookies. Cookies are a tradition passed down through the ages. In medieval Europe, small spiced cookies were exchanged as treats, and people still bake and share gingerbread cookies today.
Cut cookies are especially prominent during the holiday season, with some families having favorite cookie cutter shapes and dough recipes. Certain techniques can make baking sessions easier and help to ensure consistent results any time of year.
Working on a lightly floured, cool surface, such as a cutting board or stone counter top, is recommended. Bakers should never work on a warm surface, which can cause dough to spread and stick.
The dough can be rolled out between two sheets of baking or parchment paper to prevent it from sticking. Betty Crocker recommends a thickness of about 1/8 inch, unless noted in the recipe. The parchment paper also enables rolledout dough to be easily transferred to a refrigerator or elsewhere.
When rolling out dough, portioning the dough into a few smaller amounts allows it to roll out more easily. This will also help it to chill more readily.
Cookies cut most easily when the dough is chilled. The dough should be refrigerated for as long as possible, ideally an hour or moreeven overnight. The more chilled, the firmer the dough will be.
Rubber rolling pin rings that slip onto each side of the rolling pin can help ensure that the dough is being rolled out to a uniform thickness.
Cookie cutters should be dipped in flour with each cut. It is a good idea to work from the center and move out to the edges when cutting out
designs. When cutting, it is a good idea to maximize space and avoid scraps and rerolling.
Some expert bakers say that metal cookie cutters cut cleaner than plastic ones. Whichever cutter is used, the cookie should be cut by pressing straight down. The cookie cutter should not be twisted or jiggled when being used. Doughs with a high butter content can help, as the extra grease helps separate the dough from the cutters.
If cut cookies have gotten warmer, placing them in the freezer for a few minutes will help them firm up again before baking. This will help to ensure the cookies will not spread or become misshapen while baking.
Extra steps may seem like they will take a lot of time. However, the extra effort and attention to detail may help produce better results.
