Scouting for Food is a national program of Scouts BSA, through which local troops collect nonperishable food donations in their communities to benefit area food banks.
As part of the program, Scouts
place door hangers in local neighborhoods explaining about the food drive on one weekend and then return a week later to collect the donations left outside near front doors and mailboxes. Residents are asked to place donated items in plastic grocery bags or boxes and attach the door tag to
the containers.
Locally, Berks County Scout troops participated in Scouting for Food by collecting nonperishable food items and monetary donations for Helping Harvest, formerly known as the Greater Berks Food Bank.
Scouts BSA Troops and Cub
Packs 37, 529, 543, 543G, 595 and 597 collected food from the Amity, Monocacy, Birdsboro, Robeson, Gibraltar, Elverson and Morgantown areas. The groups are part of the Hawk Mountain Council in the Frontier District, which serves Berks, Schuylkill and Carbon counties.

When Tom Phillip brought his wife, Geri, to the Snack Shack at Shady Maple Farm Market, it was not just about enjoying homemade food for lunch. Rather, the activity provided a form of socialization for Geri, who has Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease.
Tom and Geri, who are lifelong residents of Honey Brook and have been married for more than 54 years, visited Shady Maple every day until recently, when Geri was placed in hospice care at their home. The Snack Shack employees noticed their absence, which prompted them to surprise Tom and his wife with meals and goodies, which were delivered to their home. See

Cory Derer, media chair for the Frontier District, reported that Hawk Mountain Council units from throughout Berks and Schuylkill counties collected 42,086 pounds of food. Locally, 9,000 pounds of food was collected at the Gibraltar collection location. In addition, Helping Harvest received more than $1,581 in monetary donations, which can be used to purchase an additional 19,000 pounds of food.
According to Derer, this year marks the 36th year of the local Scouting for Food collection drive to benefit Helping Harvest. Since 1987, Scouts have garnered more than 2 million pounds of food as well as monetary donations in support of the effort.
Troop 529 has been coordinating the Gibraltar and Robeson Township collection location for more than 20 years. For the past nine years, Troops 529 and 543 have been working together to cover all of Robeson Township, Morgantown and eastern Caernarvon Township and the Flying Hills community in Cumru Township. In 2021, Troops 37 and 543G joined forces with Troops 529 and 543 and expanded their coverage area to include Elverson borough.
On hand at the Gibraltar food collection site this year were Scouts of all ages, along with their friends, family and neighbors, who volunteered to help. Tim Le, 18, an exchange student from Taiwan, who is friends with two of the Boy Scouts, was one of the participants. “Service to
people is the most essential thing for every Scout,” Tim said. “I was pretty surprised that we can collect so many bags of food. I think people here are really willing to donate some of their food for the needy, (which) is such kind behavior.”
Alex Johnson, 12, of Birdsboro, a Tenderfoot Scout in Troop 529, also participated. “This is the fourth year that I’ve helped with this,” Alex said. “I helped collect the food in my neighborhood and then helped to sort it. The fact that I’m helping the community and getting food to people who need it makes it fun.”
Helping Harvest, which provides food assistance to residents in need in Berks and Schuylkill counties, is always in need of food and monetary donations. For more information, visit www.helping harvest.org. Those interested in becoming a Cub Scout or a member of BSA may visit https://beascout.scouting.org for more details.

The Berks County Public Library System recently announced that beginning on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, all system-member libraries, including the Village Library of Morgantown and the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro, will be clearing overdue fines from all patron accounts as part of their fine-free policy change. Additionally, all traditional library materials, including books, audio and visual materials, will no longer accrue fines for being late.
The decision to remove the outdated financial barrier was unanimously accepted by all library directors in the library
system, a move that was supported by the three Berks County commissioners.
In September, the commissioners approved a proposal that was offered to all system member libraries to pay off outstanding fines on all patron accounts utilizing county lost revenue funds. Libraries accepting the proposal would receive a onetime payment to become fine free for all of their traditional materials.
The decision to purge late fines from all accounts impacts 21,326 library patrons, some which are barred from library services after accruing more
than $10 in fines.
While the decision to go fine free affects the majority of library materials available, there are a few exceptions for specialty items such as admission passes, equipment, Library of Things materials and items borrowed from outside the system.
Additionally, long-overdue items, regardless of their fine free status, will be marked as lost and accrue fees for each item.
Additional information about the library system’s transition to fine free is available at www.berks libraries.org/fine-free.

“I brought my wife to Shady Maple every day as a form of therapy. Having the stimulation and the daily relationships with Shady Maple staff gave Geri solace,” explained Tom. “After not seeing Geri at the store and hearing of Geri’s hospice situation, Shady Maple (employees) presented a token of their kindness and love for me and my wife. The staff brought a box of meals and goodies with this beautiful card.”
During their daily meals, which took place for at least a year, Geri and Tom got to know the employees at the Snack Shack. “Most of them are young women. One is a
senior in high school; others are freshmen or sophomores in college,” said Tom. “They work there when they can to earn some money to support their educational costs. They are out there trying to improve their lives and pursuing careers. I always took an interest in how they were doing and tried to (share) some experiences that I had when I was young person.”
Tom said he was not surprised that the employees pulled together to provide him and his wife with gifts, which included five pre-made meals, a basket of fruit, a container of mixed nuts and a box of chocolate-covered pretzels.
A card was included in the package, which was signed by Snack Shack employees.
“They knew about my wife’s situation and had a perception that these are things that don’t get better over time. We were kind of like family,” Tom shared. “These people are special, especially in that they are young people. They are thoughtful and they are respectful, and we always had a good time. There (was) always banter going back and forth.”
He said that people in the community should be aware of the Snack Shack employees’ kind gesture. “This is an act of kindness - good people doing good things,” said Tom. “The focal point for me is that the women who work at the Snack Shack (used) their own money (to) fund the cost of the big box of stuff. People in the vicinity should know they live in a special place.”
Tom is currently providing care for Geri, who attended St. Peter Parish in Honey
Brook and was a volunteer at St. Mary of Providence Center in Elverson. She previously worked at Kayeness Inc., a plastic molding company in Honey Brook, and at Tel Hai Retirement Community.
