Manheim Township

Detectives and patrolmen serve distinctly different roles in law enforcement. The positions demand different approaches.
But detectives and patrolmen are both police officers, committed to professionalism, public safety and teamwork.
A native of Lititz, Detective Cpl. Gary Rynier has been a Manheim Township police officer for 14 years. He’s been a detective for one year.
“Patrolmen are the face of the department,” said Rynier. “They’re the initial responders to every call. Basically, they’re the ones who would do the triage. If it’s simple, they’ll do it. If the investigation is extensive, it comes back to the detectives, who have more time for that type of work.”
“(Detectives) would do an extensive follow-up,” continued Rynier. “There are tons of work that gets done behind the scenes.
Patrol would do a quick field interview to identify witnesses. Here, we would do more extensive interviews and background checks. We’ll bring the case to a resolution. It’s a different mindset. You’ve got to be OK with sitting back and seeing the big picture. You’ve got to be very inquisitive.”
The Manheim Township Police Department is made up of 65 sworn officers, including six detectives, a detective sergeant and a detective lieutenant.
Last year as a department, Manheim Township handled 41,000 dispatches and wrote 22,000 reports. The criminal investigation division handled 325 cases.
“The characteristics that make you a good patrolman also make you a good detective,” said Rynier. “It’s an ability to communicate. Hard-working patrolmen who are willing to put in extra work and who want to be challenged more become detectives. But it’s a completely different world. As a patrolman, you’re interjecting
New isn’t necessarily improved; bigger isn’t necessarily better. But when the topic is mental health services, more is almost always desirable.
Samaritan Center is expanding its counseling services. It’s a move intended to provide more hope for a healthier, happier and better-adjusted community.
“We know that counseling works, that it improves lives,”
said Steve Schedler, executive director of Samaritan Center.
“For many, it’s a game-changer. What people come in with is very diverse, but there are some common threads. Counseling can give people a different way of thinking and navigating emotions and how they handle relationships. There are also these positive examples of people growing.”
At the beginning of April, Samaritan Center opened a

Enter North Star Initiative (NSI).
NSI’s next annual pickleball tournament is almost upon us. The competitive event will raise money and awareness in the fight against human trafficking while promoting the growth of
new counseling space at 33 N. Market St., Lancaster, to augment the mission started at its main location at 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. In addition to increasing the nonprofit’s coverage area, the downtown office will allow Samaritan Center to reach more people and provide more mental health services.
“We’re very aware of the gap between demand and the availability of counseling,” said Schedler. “We’re involved in that conversation. The good news is that we’ve seen a turn in people’s willingness to get help since COVID. Who doesn’t need to talk to somebody? Now we’re seeing the response to that. We saw a record demand over the last four years. Progress is being made, but it will take years to level back out.”
Housed on the fourth floor of a historic building near Lancaster Central Market, Samaritan Center North Market features five new counseling offices. Samaritan
the blossoming sport.
“It’s a way to get the community involved with something that’s going on in our own backyard,” said Alex Wagner, NSI’s marketing and communications director. “There’s a whole community that is super excited to play. The rules are easy to pick up. It’s something that’s fun and brings everyone together.”
hoping the brackets will make the tournament more competitive.”
NSI had so much fun with its initial venture into the competitive pickleball world in 2023 that it decided to stage another tournament this year. Last year’s event netted over $4,000 for NSI, a total the nonprofit is hoping to double this year.
Center, which is operated by 41 employees, 25 of whom are fulltime or part-time therapists, has added five new counselors.
“It’s everyone in the community, from all walks of life,” said Schedler of Samaritan Center’s counseling clientele. “We’ve seen all ages reach out. It could be older adults; some of our counselors work with children and teens, families, couples, individuals. There really are no groups of folks not reaching out. We have in-person and virtual capabilities, so we can work with anyone in Pennsylvania. But the bulk of our clients seen in-house are Lancaster County residents.”
In 2023, Samaritan Center provided more than 14,000 counseling sessions. With the addition of North Market, Samaritan Center now has the capability to provide an additional 6,000 sessions.
“Samaritan Center does many things in the community, and counseling is just one of them,” said Schedler. “We just reached a point where we were out of space. We wanted to come up with a way to serve more people, and we’re excited about being in the city for the first time. Our goal is to provide improved mental health to everyone. Samaritan Center’s mission is to be as accessible as possible to meet people’s needs for counseling services, and now we’re more accessible than ever.”
Samaritan Center was established in 1987 by a group from Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, interested in providing accredited, faith-based counseling. Over the last 37 years, the services Samaritan Center provides have changed to meet the evolving needs of the community.
“It was really a leap of faith to jump out and start a new counseling center,” said Schedler. “Over time, Samaritan Center has established itself by providing high-quality counseling services. Mostly through word of mouth, many lives have been changed. We’ve had a legacy of growing thoughtfully.”

The second edition of NSI’s pickleball tournament will be contested on Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Manor Middle School courts, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. In the case of rain, the event will be pushed back to the next Saturday, June 22, at the same time and place.
Teams of two players can register by going to www.north starinitiative.org/events before Friday, June 7.
“It’s a very family, fun atmosphere,” said Wagner. “There are tons of spectators and supporters. But there’s going to be a lot more going on than just a pickleball tournament. We also want people to know who we are as an organization.”
NSI’s pickleball tournament draw will be broken down into three divisions: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Each division can accommodate up to 25 teams.
The sponsored event will also include music provided by a DJ.
“It’s a mix of everyone,” said Wagner of individuals expected to attend. “It’s both supporters of NSI and pickleball players. It’s pickleball players who play regularly and neighbors. We’re
“All of the money raised will directly support our women going through our program at The House,” said Wagner. With facilities to support up to 10 residents, The Harbor is a safe house that provides support in the form of classes, therapy and life skills development.
“Different people have different capacities to give,” said Wagner. “No matter how big or small it is, it truly makes a difference in the lives of these women. NSI’s ultimate goal is to have survivors graduate and live a life of independence, whatever that looks like for them.”
Located in Lititz and founded in 2010, NSI conducts two other fundraising and awareness events throughout the course of the year: the Welcome to the Battle anti-trafficking event in January and Light Up the Night in October.
“We were needing to fill a gap, and we were hearing pickleball all over the place,” said Wagner. “Someone in our office said, ‘Let’s try a pickleball tournament, just because of how popular it is.’ We were like, ‘Let’s give it a try.’ We honestly didn’t know how it was going to go, but it took off. Now we’re hoping to expand it and grow it into the future.”
Lancaster Catholic High School faculty member Tony Brill was one of seven educators from Catholic schools in the Diocese of Harrisburg who were honored with a 2024 Golden Apple Award. At Lancaster Catholic, Brill is an instrumental music teacher, the band director, and the director of fine and performing arts.
The other winners were Kimberly Winters, principal of Saint Joseph Catholic School in Danville; Stephanie Bader, middle school language arts and religion teacher at Saint Catherine Laboure Catholic School in Harrisburg; Michael DiMarco, theology teacher at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg; Kelli

yourself into situations that can be unstable, whereas a detective is almost always involved until everything is done.”
There are no special requirements to become a police detective, no certifications, no accreditations. Generally, patrolmen work their way up to becoming detectives through experience, hard work, successful track records and specific career paths.
Perhaps most importantly, there has to be a desire to become a detective.
“In the end, we’re all just police officers,” said Rynier. “The teamwork, that’s what decides the successful resolution of a case or not. As detectives, when we’re given a case, we rely on accurate information from the responding patrolmen. As far as detectives go, the group I work with is probably the best team I’ve ever been a part of. Everyone has a specialty.”
A graduate of Warwick High School, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and York College of Pennsylvania, Rynier completed his police academy training at Harrisburg Area Community College. After being hired by the Manheim Town-

ship Police Department, Rynier was named an officer in charge (OIC) in 2018 and selected as a detective in 2023.
“I’ve always been around law enforcement,” said Rynier. “I participated in track and field at York College. When I graduated, I missed the team atmosphere. I went looking for that team atmosphere in law enforcement.”
“I thoroughly enjoy doing detective work,” added Rynier. “It’s like putting a puzzle together of a picture that you never got to see. I like putting the pieces together and helping the victims. I like helping the people I work with.”

JJ Roach shares his drawing “Eye of the Eagle” with the Eagles’ mascot, Swoop, during the opening night of the exhibit.
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDJJ Roach of Lancaster doesn’t see the world in the same way most people do. The 20-year-old artist has a keen eye for complex patterns and intricate details, which he often quickly spots in what appear to be ordinary settings. In 2020, JJ began leaning into his unique instincts to create elaborate, large-scale drawings that spare no detail. Over the last four years, JJ has continued to hone his craft by expanding his portfolio and participating in art shows and events in Lancaster County and beyond, including the Philadelphia Eagles Art Gala Charity Auction held in March.

“Green Is the Heart Inspired” was held from March 25 to April 15 at Arch Enemy Arts, a gallery located in Philadelphia’s historic Old City. The art gala and auction, which benefited the Eagles Autism Foundation, featured 35 pieces created by artists from the greater Philadelphia area. JJ was among three of the featured artists who have been diagnosed with autism.
JJ’s mother, Carol, first learned about the Eagles Autism Foundation in February from her other son, John. After doing some research and making a few phone calls, Carol received a response from the foundation, which invited JJ to participate in the upcoming gala by submitting a green piece of artwork. JJ had been working on a large drawing that he hadn’t colored in yet, and he decided to apply
the Eagles’ green and white color scheme to have it included. Despite the short timeframe, which necessitated several late-night drawing sessions, JJ finished his piece “Eye of the Eagle” in time for the gala.
“It was fun and crazy all at once,” JJ said of the exhibit’s opening night, which he attended with Carol. “I’ve been to art galas and fundraisers before, but never ones with NFL stars or anything.” The opening night at Arch Enemy Arts was attended by art collectors, supporters of the Eagles Autism Foundation and famous players from the Philadelphia football team. “It was beautiful, green chaos,” Carol added.
After a few bids, JJ’s piece sold for nearly $1,000. Sporting a glittering green suit and tie, JJ met other artists featured in the exhibit and a few of the Eagles players, as well as the team’s mascot, Swoop.
As a child, JJ was diagnosed with autism and ADHD, which often made it difficult for him to concentrate in class. When he was 16 years old, JJ started working on

Trucks gear up for last year’s Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy.
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy rolls through town on Sunday, May 12, it will honor a tradition that began 35 years ago with the wish of one child.
“It all began with Wish Kid Matt Strawser,” said Michelle Ruel, director of marketing and communications for Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley. “Matt was fascinated with big rig trucks, so it was no surprise he wished to ride in a big rig and talk to his sister, Heather, on the CB radio.”
Since 1990, almost 12,000 trucks have driven in the Convoy, and the event has raised more than $9.2 million, granting wishes to more than 900 children in the Susquehanna Valley.
This year’s Convoy will kick off with a carnival beginning at 9 a.m. at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. The Convoy will depart at 1:30 p.m.
the grand entrance of hundreds of trucks, each a sight to behold, as they roll into the venue. As you marvel at the impressive display, indulge in the diverse food truck offerings. And amidst the bustling atmosphere, take the opportunity to connect with the many Wish Kids and their families, whose stories are sure to touch your heart.”
Those who attend the event will have the opportunity to win gift baskets, and an online auction will run through noon on May 12. A drivethrough chicken barbecue organized by SEI Catering will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring barbecue chicken thighs, cheesy potatoes, green beans, a dinner roll, a cookie and a drink. No advance purchase is necessary, and dinners will be available until sold out.
At noon, a program will honor the 35th anniversary of the Convoy before the trucks leave the lot, accompanied by more than 50 Wish Kids. Ruel anticipates more than 400 trucks participating in the Convoy this year.
The 11th annual Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m. until the last item is sold. This year the event has a new location, Metzler’s Mennonite School, 535 W. Metzler Road, Ephrata. The one-room school is operated by the Amish and conservative Mennonite community. The new auction location is suitable because many community members travel by buggy, by bicycle, or on foot.
The full-day community event will feature live and silent auctions, a large bake sale, children’s activities, and homemade food. Competitive Spikeball tournaments will also return this year. The auction, facilitated by Beiler-Campbell Auction Services, Curvin Horning, and a team of more than 125 volunteers, will offer an array of items, including gift cards to local businesses, furniture, antiques, sheds, lawn and garden items, flowers and plants, quilts crafted by local artisans, and collectibles.
All gifts and donations received are tax-deductible, and 100% of the auction day profits go directly to Transformation Haiti and the Hope Library (Bibliyotèk Lespwa) and Christian Training Center, both located in Haiti.
As Haiti continues to rebuild after a challenging year of insecurity and turmoil, the Hope Library is one of the few public libraries and business training centers accessible to individuals in Port-au-Prince. It offers godly business training in various occupations for those looking to become self-sustainable as well as literature in French, Creole, and English.
Transformation Haiti offers the program Paradigm Shift in the city of Cap-Haïtien. Led by pastor Nelson Martin and his wife, Sue, the program offers business and leadership training to help people achieve self-sustainability.

“For first-time attendees, the Mother’s Day Truck Convoy is an absolute must-visit,” Ruel said. “From the moment you step inside, you’ll be immersed in a world of excitement and entertainment perfect for the entire family. … Treat yourself to delicious food, test your skills at carnival games and explore the array of merchandise available.” Wish Kid Troy will share his inspiring story and sign copies of his book, “Chemo Dog.”
“But the real magic awaits you outdoors,” Ruel shared. “Witness
“It’s a breathtaking sight that encapsulates the spirit of this remarkable event,” she commented.
Last year’s event raised $553,838, the second-highest total in the event’s history. Organizers have set a goal of $595,000 for this year. “Every dollar raised at this event goes toward granting the wishes of children in the Susquehanna Valley,” Ruel said. “With nearly 75% of wishes funded through this event, your participation directly impacts the lives of deserving children and families.”
The Convoy will follow a route through Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy. For more information, including a route map and access to the online auction, visit www.wishconvoy.org.
Oregon Community United Methodist Church, 1214 Creek Road, Lititz, will hold a yard sale and chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 11. St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 700 Pleasure Road, Lancaster, will host a program about pollinators on Wednesday, May 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. Penn State Extension Master Gardener Adam Barkafski will present “Our Native Pollinators and Their Favorite Plants.”
Attendees will learn which animals are native pollinators in the local area, how pollination occurs, and which native plants are the pollinators’ favorites. The presentation will provide information to help people protect pollinators.
The program is free and open to the public.
Barkafski has been a Master Gardener in Lancaster County since 2018. A web designer and former public school teacher, he is a home gardener by hobby. His gardening
interests began with perennials and later focused on native plants. He now gardens with an intention to create and preserve pollinator and wildlife habitat, and he enjoys observing pollinators interacting with plants.
Master Gardeners are volunteers who have an enthusiasm for gardening and are trained in a broad range of horticultural topics. They use unbiased, research-based information to educate community members on best practices in sustainable horticulture and environmental stewardship.
This program is part of St. Matthew’s Conversation Around the Corner speaker series. The aim of the series is to unite the community by exploring diverse subjects and fostering learning and connection.
The Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) fine and performing arts department will present “A Fresh Field of Music,” part of its LCHS Community Outreach Concert and Lecture Series, on Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m. The event will take place at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster. The concert will feature pianist Frances Veri, violinist Michael Jamanis, and cellist Susan Moyer Bergeron, who is a Lancaster native. They will premiere Richard Field’s Piano Trio No. 1, which blends elements of classical, jazz, and popular music. They will also present works by Bach, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Dvorak, and Piazzolla.
Jamanis is the son of Veri, and he, Bergeron, and Field have known each other since childhood. Field now resides in Budapest, Hungary.
Jamanis and Veri have been artists in residence at the LCHS performing arts series since 2012. They have a history of involvement in the music community of Lancaster and around the world as touring artists. Jamanis directs Music For Everyone’s education program and is a senior adjunct professor at Franklin & Marshall College.
Like Jamanis, Bergeron comes from a musical family. Her father, Karl Moyer, taught organ lessons and music courses at Millersville University for 30 years. He was also a music critic for a local newspaper. Bergeron’s late mother, Carolyn, was a well-known string teacher and a member of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra for many years, and a string lesson program was established in her memory through Music For Everyone in 2023. Sister Cynthia is a music professor.
Bergeron began her musical journey at age 4, and she won numerous awards as a child. A summer spent at the Kinhaven music camp in Weston, Va., inspired her to become a professional cellist. She holds degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music, the University of Akron, and the University of Miami. She is a former member of the New World Symphony, a current member of the Naples Philharmonic, and a founding member of the Dalbergi Trio. Admission is free. Donations by cash or check will be received for the LCHS Tri-M Music Honor Society’s community service charity project recipient, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania has planned its Barons & Builders summer day camps. A concert featuring Lancaster British Brass Band, conducted by Tina DiMeglio, will be held at St. John Neumann Church, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, May 14, at 6 p.m. This will be the 20th anniversary concert of the Lancaster British Brass Band and, to celebrate, the group will play some of its favorite pieces from the past, including “When the Saints Come Marching In” and “Georgia on My Mind.”
This will also be DiMeglio’s debut concert. She is currently the associate director of bands at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, and she conducts the USF symphonic band, in addition to teaching courses in conducting and music education. She has served as the music director of the Tampa Brass Band since 2021.
Lancaster British Brass Band follows the path first laid down in the mill and mining towns of mid-19th-century Britain. Gradually evolving into a fixed group of 28 players plus a conductor, the brass band flourished under the sponsorship of mill and mine owners looking to raise morale. Later, the Salvation Army began capitalizing on the success of the bands by establishing brass bands as part of its outreach through music.
The unique sound quality of Lancaster British Brass Band is due to its being composed entirely of brass winds and percussion instruments.
A freewill offering will be received for the Further in Faith Capital Campaign and St. John Neumann School and Church.
