Everything lunch lady Bonnie Eberly serves comes with
BY JEFF FALKThere are nicknames and handles and pet names.
Bonnie Eberly wears hers like a badge of honor.
Eberly is a lunch lady. Personally, and professionally, she embodies everything that is positive and pure about the scholastic term of endearment.
“I am proud to be a lunch lady,” said Eberly. “I’m proud of what I do because I know there is value in what I do. In my mind, the lunch lady is the person in school you can count on, who is loving and compassionate. If you have a problem, you go to the lunch lady.”
At Smoketown Elementary School, Eberly’s official title is child nutrition manager. She’s been a lunch lady for 35 years, ever since her youngest child first went off to school. The first 13 years were dedicated to
the Manheim Township School District, and the last 22 years she has spent in the Conestoga Valley School District.
As the head lunch lady at Smoketown Elementary, Eberly oversees a kitchen staff of five. In addition to preparing and serving breakfast and lunch almost every day, Eberly and her staff order, receive, and store food and adhere to government nutrition guidelines.
They also perform duties that can’t be found in a job description.
“Our duties are pretty much across the board. We do everything - sweeping, mopping, wiping noses,” said Eberly, a resident of Manheim Township.
“Whatever it takes to serve our students, we do it. We really do make a difference in kids’ lives every day. I’ve had children tell me stories of their home life. The lunch ladies are the keepers of secrets.”

One of the keys to good writing is a compelling subject.
Bob Ruder had never written a book before, yet he wrote his first one in 15 minutes. It turns out cats make very good subject material, and besides, Ruder really had little say in it because his subject chose him.
“What (people have) always found interesting is that cats
are so aloof,” said Ruder. “They meander to their own beat. They come and go as they choose. If they choose to love you, they will.”
Meow is the name of Ruder’s mature male cat and the subject of his book, “I Am Meow.” The book is nonfiction - because as they say, the truth is stranger than fiction - and it’s not necessarily a children’s book. Instead, it’s suitable for anyone who
BY JEFF FALKThe Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series (LLCS) is cool, it’s refreshing, it’s delightfully delicious - not unlike the summertime drink bearing its name and served at the end of each performance.

Getting back in the game for a good cause
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAt any age, amputees and individuals born with limb loss or limb difference face many challenges. But children in America often face additional obstacles when seeking prosthetics and therapy due to a decreased likelihood that their family’s insurance will cover the cost. Nonprofit organization Iron Leg Corp. seeks to provide support for children in Lancaster County who are in need of assistance with obtaining prosthetics.
Iron Leg is one of the few organizations of its kind, and it will hold an equally unique fundraising event on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Biemesderfer Stadium, 45 Pucillo Drive, Millersville. The event will begin at 7 p.m., and it will entail full-contact football games for individuals above the age of 34 and amputees who are 18 or older. Registration is available online for residents in any part of Lancaster County, and the football teams will be helmed by both former and current coaches from several local school districts, including Donegal, Hempfield, Solanco and Penn Manor.
Practices for the game will begin at the end of May; exact dates and additional information will be announced by Iron Leg once they are available. The registration fee will include equipment such as a uniform, a helmet and shoulder pads. Players are required to bring a seven-pad girdle and turf cleats. To register online, visit https:// ironleg.org/interest-form.
The primary goal of the fundraiser is to acquire the resources that allow Iron Leg to provide financial support and to purchase prosthetics for children with limb loss or limb difference. Due to how quickly children outgrow prosthetics, insurance often will not cover the cost; if it does, it typically only allows the child to obtain a basic prosthetic that is unsuited for physical activities such as playing sports or hiking. “Most of the time, insurance companies won’t pay for a $30,000 leg if the kid is going to grow out of it in within two years,” said Iron Leg co-founder Matt Millhouse. “But the thing is, that means the kids miss out on being more active. A basic leg will allow them to walk, but to us that’s not good enough. A kid can run track

and field with a good leg.”
In addition to raising funds for children in the community, the goal of Iron Leg’s fundraiser is to give football players an opportunity to play one more game under the lights of the Millersville Marauders’ stadium. Not only do Millhouse and fellow Iron Leg co-founder Sean Laukhuff hope to engage adults who want to stay active and enjoy a full-contact football match, but they also see the fundraiser as an opportunity for players’ children and grandchildren to see them out on the field.
“It was really cool to see the comradery among the coaches when we had our first meeting,” Laukhuff said. “When they coached for their school districts, they were always playing against each other. But now they’re on the same team, and they’re excited to plan out their plays and strategies.”
Sponsorship opportunities are available on Iron Leg’s website. To purchase a ticket to spectate the game, visit www.717shows.com/ events/iron-leg-football-game.
Quick Draw introduces different element of taste to community event
BY JEFF FALK
Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. | PO Box 500, Mount Joy, PA 17552 TOWNLIVELY.COM

Art and the outdoors go together like a brush and a canvas, like the Lititz Art Association and Venture Lititz, like Quick Draw and Taste of Lititz.
Venture Lititz and the Lititz Art Association are pooling their talents and resources to stage a unique outdoor art event designed to enrich the community. Quick Draw and Taste of Lititz are a couple of simultaneous local happenings - an event within an event.
“Our goal with the Lititz Art Association is to foster and promote the arts and partner with other organizations which have similar purposes,” said Donna Felton, a board member of both the Lititz Art Association and
Venture Lititz. “Venture Lititz and the Lititz Art Association are a natural combination; we work on projects together. All of the board members have their own specialties, and my role for Venture Lititz is for the arts.”
Held in conjunction with Venture Lititz’s tradition-rich Taste of Lititz street festival, Quick Draw is a judged and timed art competition pitting local artists against one another for cash prizes. The Quick Draw contest will be held at the Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square, from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 7, and then the artists’ creations will be put up for display and sale. East Main Street will be blocked off from Water Street to Broad Street for Taste of Lititz between 4 and 9 p.m.
Artists age 18 and older can pre-
register for the Quick Draw contest at www.lititzartassociation.com or up until 10 a.m. at the event.
“We’re trying to bring people to Lititz for a day out and to enjoy the medium of two-dimensional art,” said Felton. “It’s really the art part of Taste of Lititz. There are other things during Taste of Lititz where people can wander around and try their hands at art. Quick Draw is the professional artists. We’re trying to get onlookers to come out while the artists are painting.”
Nearly 30 artists from Lancaster County and southeastern Pennsylvania are expected to participate in the Quick Draw contest. Typically, contestants employ mediums like oil, acrylics, watercolors, pencil, pen,

Eberly’s time as a lunch lady is coming to an end. When the school year concludes early in June, she will retire after 35 years of service.
“It’ll be bittersweet,” said Eberly of her retirement. “I’ve done this for a long time. I enjoy the women I work with. I’m looking forward to slowing down. It’s been challenging. It’s been fulfilling. It’s rewarding working with the students and seeing the kids growing up.”
“When my youngest went into the first grade, I started working a few hours,” she continued. “I worked my way up and eventually became a manager. It seems like a good time to pursue other opportunities.”
The importance of childhood nutrition can’t be overstated. Without food, there is no school.
“You can’t teach a hungry child,” said Eberly. “These kids come from all sorts of backgrounds. Good nutrition helps that cognitive development and their ability to learn.
The best part of my job is when I see those kids enjoying their meals.”
A caring individual, a mom, and a lunch lady, Eberly has always maintained a professional relationship with the students she’s served.
“I hope my relationship with the children has been one of mutual respect,” said Eberly. “We are humans. We’re not trying to get kids through the serving line as fast as we can. As they’re coming through, we talk to them. ‘Hi. How are you doing? Good morning. We’re glad you are here.’ Our job is to create a loving relationship.”
“Meals are relaxed. Students have an opportunity to converse with their friends,” added Eberly. “It’s a social time. School is hard, and a lot of these kids have challenges. We try to make it a fun time. I try to celebrate everything on the calendar. I run contests throughout the year just to make it a fun atmosphere for them.”

pastel, ink and charcoal to create two-dimensional representations of architecture, landscape, plants or any subject of their choosing.
The artists are allotted two hours to complete their creations from a blank canvas. Eighty percent of the proceeds from the sale of the artworks goes to the artists, while the other 20% is donated to Venture Lititz.
“You have to think about how you’re going to go from a blank canvas to a finished product in two hours,” said Felton. “I would say most (artists) do it because of their love for the arts. It’s nice to win. If you can enjoy the day, win and sell your painting, you have the trifecta.”
“Some have been professional artists all their lives,” continued Felton. “We have people who have
from pg 2
retired and just started painting. We have college students. We have college instructors. We have novices. Some are very talented, and some are beginners. That’s the beauty of this event. It’s not overwhelming to come out and try it.”
While there is a fee to register as an artist for Quick Draw, the art contest is free to spectators, as is entrance to Taste of Lititz. There are costs involved with sampling the fares offered by local restaurants and taverns at Taste of Lititz.
The Taste of Lititz block party will also feature live music. Typically the event draws more than 3,000 visitors to the downtown business district.
For additional information about Taste of Lititz, go to www.lititzpa. com/event/taste-of-lititz-3.

“I Am Meow”

enjoys a good cat tale.
“It’s the story of a cat who chose to leave its previous home, meander across the countryside and find us as a new family,” said Ruder, who lives with his wife, Margie, in Manheim Township. “When we first got this cat, he was reluctant to come near us. But he finally came into our home. He was a skinny little guy when we first met him. The book is about this guy’s journey. I wanted to tell why this guy came to us.”
All of this cat drama went down during the summer of 2022. Ruder published “I Am Meow” in December of 2023.
“This cat chose to adopt us,” said Ruder. “Meow is an example of a free spirit. He chose to find a better life for himself. We gave him a new life, but he’s brought joy to our life.”
Illustrated by local artist and former Hempfield High School art teacher Kelly Gallagher, “I Am Meow” is a 20-page, black and white publication that can also serve as a coloring book.
“We called him Meow because he says his name all the time,” said Ruder. “Maybe he thought we didn’t understand it, so he said it over and over until we got it right. The book is about who this cat happens to be.”
“I would say that the book’s primary audience is grandparents, because it could give them an opportunity to sit down with and spend time with their grandchildren reading a book,” he added. “There are few things more important than sharing a book with a child.”
Ruder has already sold more than 80 copies of “I Am Meow” and proceeds from the sale have gone to Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, which provides low-cost veterinary services. Ruder has ordered a second printing of “I Am Meow.”
“It is an absolute true story. That’s what made it interesting,” said Ruder, who retired from his work as the Manheim Township Middle School principal in 2004. “There are various messages to be seen in the book. People, regardless of their circumstances in life, can find joy if they wish to. It’s all about choices.”

the air conditioning makes it a cool atmosphere,” said LLCS board member Kathy Seaber. “People are talking, but they’re very attentive during the performance. It’s every informal. It’s very relaxed. People come casual. It’s very charming. It’s a fun evening.”
Conducted at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, LLCS is a series of eight concerts given mostly by local musicians and bands on Thursdays at 7 p.m. The popular summer series will kick off on June 13 with Auscultation Brass and will conclude on Aug. 8 with a performance by Lancaster Marimba Ensemble.
There will be no show on July 4.
The performances, which are typically 90 minutes in length, are free to attend, and good will offerings are received during the intermission of each one.
“The musicians enjoy performing; that’s why they want to come back the next year,” said Seaber. “I think it’s that homey atmosphere. The performers know that people appreciate their talent. That has to make you feel good as a performer. What performer doesn’t appreciate applause?”
This year’s LLCS will also feature Celtic Americana band Rizzetta’s Tones on June 20, Shaun and Kayla Ressler accompanied by A. Scott Williams on June 27, John Darrenkamp & Friends on July 11, “I Got You Babe: Let’s Duet” featuring Reji Woods on July 18, the New Holland Band on July 25 and the Lancaster British Brass Band on Aug. 1.
“Some of the bands have quite
the following,” said Seaber. “People know about our concerts in the summer on Thursdays. It’s kind of established; it’s familiar and regular. Each show is a variety of songs, maybe even something you don’t know. The audiences like when the performers talk to them. That makes it personal and familiar. But all of the performers are good in their own way.”
While the variety of LLCS’ music is wide and familiar, the series places an emphasis on patriotic music, including marches, Broadway show tunes, operatic music, Irish songs, movie and television show themes and popular music. Typically, between 200 and 400 people attend the concerts.
“The median age of the audience is probably 60 or older, but we do get some families,” said Seaber. “It gives people something to do in the summer.”
This season will mark LLCS’ 51st series of concerts. LLCS can trace its origins to the early 1970s and the Lancaster Opera Company Associates.
“It continues a tradition of supporting local talent and providing entertainment in the summertime that appeals to a wide audience,” said Seaber. “We’re still here. We’re sponsoring another season, and it’s going to be a good season. Finding the groups, calling the groups and organizing is hard work in January, February and March, but then it kind of runs itself.”
