At graduation, LCHS executes God’s perfect plan
BY JEFF FALKGraduation is a ceremony, a special occasion performed for a purpose. Ceremonies celebrate milestones, achievements and, in a very special way, life itself.
All graduations are similar, and all graduations are unique. The recent graduation ceremony at Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) celebrated the completion of goals and new beginnings, scholastic success and, of course, God.
“At Catholic, we get in and get out,” said LCHS principal Terry Klugh. “Everybody should know their roles and it moves, there’s a rhythm to it and the focus is on the students. You look up and it’s over. We have it down to an hour, and it’s a solemn hour.”
“I think people truly understand what we’re trying to do, which is honor our seniors,” Klugh continued. “The celebration happens at the end of our ceremony. The
focus is on the student and what he or she achieved. That doesn’t happen too many times in a person’s life.”
On the picturesque Thursday evening of May 30, LCHS conducted its 96th graduation ceremony at the school’s Crusader Stadium. Surrounded by family, friends, teachers, administrators, underclassmen, community members and officials of the Diocese of Harrisburg, 118 members of the Class of 2024 bade farewell to Lancaster Catholic High School together.
The day prior, LCHS had conducted its senior awards celebration and baccalaureate ceremony.
“When members of this class were freshmen, they were still dealing with COVID,” said Klugh.
“They may have been the first class to understand the need to overcome. They’ll almost be known as the persevering class.
It wasn’t a smooth process. It was a struggle, but they did it. As they went through their four years at
Catholic, they became more and more evolved. Then they took leadership roles as juniors and seniors.”
On their big day, those seniors began showing up outside Crusader Stadium around 6:30 p.m. After Klugh gathered
them together and reminded them that they are loved, members of the Class of 2024 processed boys and girls, side by side, across the stadium turf to their seats.
The ceremony opened with a prayer from Fr. Stephan Logue,
the singing of the national anthem by Sydney Diane Dissinger and the reciting of the class poem “Cap and Gown, Reflections on Graduation” by Gemma Elizabeth Nazickas. Dan Breen, the Diocese of Harrisburg’s secretary of education; Lyla Grace Maurer, class

When summer rolls around, the program continues to support families looking for Christian-focused curricula and resources. The organization offers a podcast, a blog and a variety of at-home resources.
“We are going on three years of doing a weekly podcast,” said Megan Risser, director of
marketing and advancement officer for Bible2School. “It’s released on Tuesdays, and each week we chat with a different guest regarding a variety of topics, but they are all ways of sharing God’s Word with kids.”
Topics on the “You CAN Tell the Children” podcast have ranged from praying for your child’s future spouse to establishing family devotion time.
“Each episode is under a half hour, and we don’t do ads,” Risser explained. “In the middle of each episode, we take a short break,

The Arc plans resource fair event
Fulton Bank, a subsidiary of Fulton Financial Corporation, recently presented a $10,000 check to the Bench Mark Program, a strength-based family of mentors based in Lancaster who use weight lifting, academics and career coaching to propel at-risk youths toward success. The donation was made as part of the Pennsylvania
Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program.
Smokey Glover, director of fair and responsible banking at Fulton Bank, presented the check to Bench Mark representatives Terrence Mercado; Lydia Castaneda; Ayanda McGill-Jefferson, director of programs; and Will Kiefer, founder and executive director.
Fulton Bank’s Fulton Forward initiative is focused on building vibrant communities with programs, products and services focused on four key areas: affordable housing and home ownership; job training and workforce development; financial education and economic empowerment; and diversity, equity and inclusion.
Organizations seeking funding from Fulton Bank can visit www.FultonBank .com/FultonForward for more information, including gift criteria.
Founded in 2014 as a fitness-based mentoring program, Bench Mark is a continuum of care that supports at-risk youths throughout their journey in the juvenile justice and child dependency systems. The organization focuses on long-term mentorship and evidence-based, trauma-informed mentoring practices. Since its launch, the organization has served more than 900 students, and it recently completed its first Women’s Strength and Fitness Center to further expand its positive impact on at-risk young women in the community. The Arc Lancaster Lebanon will host a Disability Health and Wellness Resource Fair and Summer Party on Saturday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brickerville Volunteer Fire Company, 10 Hopeland Road, Lititz.
A recent study by The Arc of Pennsylvania on health care needs of individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities showed that health care providers are often unsure how to effectively work with and communicate with someone with a disability. Individuals with disabilities can also face challenges when talking to health care providers. The goal of the Disability Health and Wellness Resource Fair is to provide both parties the opportunity to interact and learn how to collaborate to improve care. Those who attend may meet various local providers who can serve their health and wellness needs.
Representatives from these providers will staff resource tables. The entities that will be present include ProCare @Home, Wellcare, Disability Empowerment Center, and Lighthouse Vocational Services. Those
who attend may also participate in free health screenings, such as blood pressure checks by Bayada. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the event, and the Summer Party will include a child-friendly area with games, crafts, and face painting. Food trucks will be available in the parking lot throughout the event. Admission is free and open to the public rain or shine. Vendor spaces are available.
For more information, contact The Arc at 717-3945251 or info@thearclanc leb.org. This event is paid for in part by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Begun by a group of parents seeking services for their children with disabilities, The Arc Lancaster Lebanon has served Lancaster County for more than 60 years and Lebanon County since 2016. The mission of The Arc Lancaster Lebanon is to empower people with intellectual/developmental disabilities and autism and their families to lead full, satisfying, independent lives of their choice. and we answer a question from a Bible2School kid.” These prerecorded questions could include inquiries such as “How do I get to heaven?” or “If God created everything, who created God?” she said.
Once a month, Bible2School updates its blog with topics similar to the ones covered in the podcast. “Some people prefer to read, some prefer to listen, so we’re looking at different types of ways to get our resources out to people,” Risser said. “We want to offer practical, useful topics.”
Bible2School at-home resources include a mix of materials created in house as well as links to partner organizations that share a similar mission.
“We want to provide free resources that can make learning about the Bible easy at home,” Risser said, noting that resources include crafts, skits and science experiments. “We provide all of the instructions for the activity, and most include a guided conversation. We want to give parents exactly what they need to connect the dots for their kids.”
Most of the at-home resources are geared toward elementary school-age children, since Bible2School provides school-year programming to students in second, third and fourth grades. However, Risser noted, much of it could be tweaked to serve middle school students as well.

American Legion Riders post fundraiser
The American Legion Riders Chapter 56, 109 N. Broad St., Lititz, will hold a Carnival Ride on Saturday, June 22. Participants may sign in between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine, and the ride will travel throughout Lancaster and Lebanon counties.
They may play games to earn points. Participants do not need to be present to win prizes.
resources from Bible2School is a 22-page guide called “God Was Not Taken Out of Public Schools.” “This is a downloadable tool to educate parents and caretakers on ways their child can confidently live out their faith in public school,” Risser explained. “A lot of parents don’t understand what their kid can do in a public school setting when it comes to their faith, and we’re on a mission to teach people. People feel like they need to leave their faith at the door, and that’s not the case.”
Bible2School began 45 years ago in Manheim Central School District.
The program has grown to more than 100 classes at 45 schools throughout Lancaster County, and the organization has expanded to include programs in Idaho and Tennessee, as well.
“We want to create a program in every state, but we also know that our roots are here in Lancaster. There’s still a significant number of people who have not heard of us or don’t know about our program,” Risser said.
“There are kids who are our neighbors who have never heard of Jesus, and we are working to change that.”
For more information on Bible2School and all of its resources, visit www.bible 2school.com.
On the self-directed ride, participants may follow the provided map and visit stops at various American Legion posts.
A silent auction will also be held with prizes donated by Classic Harley-Davidson in Leesport. The event will conclude at 5 p.m. with food at Lititz American Legion, 109 N. Broad St.
There is a fee to participate. Proceeds will benefit homeless veterans in Lancaster County.

salutatorian; and Julia Elizabeth Smith, class valedictorian, addressed the seniors and Klugh presented diplomas to each member. Included in the ceremony’s conclusion were a closing prayer, the singing of the LCHS alma mater by Collin James Stritch and, of course, the traditional flinging of caps into the air.
Kreider’s Strawberries
“I think most Catholic principals would see themselves as the conductor of an orchestra, kind of a collaboration conductor,” said Klugh,
who’s retiring after 10 years as LCHS’ principal.
“The students look to you to give the credence of the music. Once all the players have all the instruments and music, you just need to let them play. Commencement was like watching the symphony. It’s very rewarding to see it happen. Everyone is playing their roles, and all the players are interacting.”

HARTZ PT Day celebrated
Community Blood Drive
Lancaster mayor Danene Sorace declared May 10 HARTZ Physical Therapy (PT) Day and surprised founder and owner Brian Hartz and his wife, Amy Walker Hartz, CFO of the practice, and their staff with a proclamation just before their third annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament at Crossgates Golf Club.
All proceeds from the tournament benefited Off the Streets, an all-volunteer organization that has assisted more than 5,070 men, women and children since 2013 to access permanent housing. The entirety of the proceeds will help to finance security deposits for those referred by social services. The HARTZ team has also joined Off the Streets volunteers on numerous moves helping

bring diversity in genre and people from different areas of the world to Lancaster,” said Kristin Chronister, LPAF’s president-elect. “I think rather than top ourselves each year, we’re looking for high-end music we haven’t showcased in a while. We’re looking for different themes in order to bring different kinds of music to Lancaster. It’s more about, ‘Let’s do something different and have fun.’”
to deliver furnishings and set up the homes for those who were formerly homeless.
For the past 24 years, HARTZ PT has developed a physical therapy practice with six offices and 42 employees. Brian and Amy are also committed to serving local communities. Together with the employees they motivate and through their HARTZ Physical Therapy Charitable Organization, the Hartzes spend an average of 50 volunteer hours and contribute more than $1,000 per employee in support of local Lancaster charities each year.
HARTZ PT staff members have volunteered their time cleaning parks and adopting a local highway and they started Equipped for Life, a free medical equipment loan program. They have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars
This summer’s music series, which includes 12 concerts at Long’s Park Amphitheater, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, will feature artists performing genres of music from American rock to gospel rock, from the blues to bluegrass, from country to pop rock. All of the shows will be performed on Sundays starting between 7 and 8 p.m., and most of the concerts last from 90 minutes to two hours.
The sponsor-supported, publicly funded, allweather shows are free to attend.
“As a foundation, we believe that music is not only important to a community but vital,” said Chronister. “Art is meant to be consumed, whether you can afford it or not. The summer series can enable people to experience music without leaving their community and not spending any money. We regularly have people thanking us because that particular artist got them through a hard time. That’s important to us. We believe music is part of every thriving community.”
LPAF’s 2024 concert lineup kicked off on June 2. The Summer Music Series will feature soul/funk group Snacktime at 7:30
p.m. on June 16; Carolyn Wonderland’s blues at 7:30 p.m. on June 23; the U.S. Army Band’s patriotic performance at 8 p.m. on June 30; the three-act “A Night in Nashville,” featuring Jeff Cohen, Brett Sheroky and The Close at 7 p.m. on July 7; American singer/ songwriter Marc Broussard at 7:30 p.m. on July 14; Canadian/Colombian world music artist Ramon Chicharron at 7:30 p.m. on July 21; the three-act Watkins Glen Tribute at 7 p.m. on July 28; gospel rockers The Sensational Barnes Brothers at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 4; the high-flying United States Air Force Band at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 11; and the all-female bluegrass band Della Mae at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 18.
Local artist PA Mambo Orquesta will perform a 45-minute opening set on June 16, as will locals Los Monstros on July 21.
“Each night brings a new flow,” said Chronister. “You shouldn’t expect to sit there and have a chill night. There’s excitement just to be there. It can be infectious, and the excitement permeates. You want to jump up. You want to move your body. The vibe is alive. It’s something that gets stronger as the evening goes on.”
On average, about 3,000 spectators make up the audiences for each performance.
“There is such a deep history with the Summer Music Series. It’s almost Lancaster lore,” said Chronister. “Not long after Long’s Park was founded, the amphitheater was built. The mission of the foundation became, ‘We’ve got this amazing venue, so let’s see what we can do to bring music into Lancaster.’ From an evolution experience, we’ve grown it and then maintained it. We’ve taken cues from the public about what they want to hear.”
