For many local kids, MTPL is their first learning center
BY JEFF FALKThe library is for gathering. The library is for books. The library is for getting things done.
The library is for learning. The library is for kids.
The Manheim Township Public Library (MTPL), located at 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, has forged a strong tradition of serving its constituents in myriad creative ways, not the least of which is its continuing dedication to developing young minds. MTPL’s commitment to children’s learning doesn’t just happen; it’s deliberate and intentional.
“I think one of our most important roles is to create memories,” said Joelle Block, MTPL’s youth services manager. “The library is a wonderful place. I still remember going to the public
library growing up. Of course, our goal is reading; we want to create a community of readers. We want to create a community within a community. Our free plays are a great way to meet other families. The Summer Reading Program is community-sponsored.”
By cloaking it in stories and play, MTPL aims to make learning fun and engage emerging brains. By name the youth programs go by Kindergarten Readiness, Toddler Time, Patio Play, Family Story Time, Duplo Free Play, Preschool Party, Baby Mania, Parachute Play, Wee Build Free Play and Ready, Set, Go!
In all, MTPL sponsors up to 12 programs or activities for infants to kids up to 7 years of age at any one time. Some are more structured than others, some are as long as 55 minutes, but all have the same mission in mind.
“It’s intentional,” said Block.
BY JEFF FALKThe need for first responders, firefighters, emergency medical technicians (EMT), paramedics and volunteers is real, both locally and beyond. The severity of the shortage seems to hinge on perspective, location and definition.
East Lampeter Township’s Lafayette Fire Company is addressing the shortage with
its Cadet Camp. The annual summer camp is designed to spark an interest in service for younger citizens.
“All over, volunteerism is a dying thing,” said Kim Herskowitz, a certified firefighter and EMT and Cadet Camp’s organizer. “Everybody needs that paycheck and to support their family. You really have to have a certain personality and that drive for service. We’re trying
BY JEFF FALKDoes Boy Scouts of America (BSA) expose and bring out inherent leadership skills or develop them? Maybe it’s not an either/ or proposition.
Through his involvement with BSA, Luke Oles has certainly explored the concept of leadership. It was that same leadership that helped Luke ascend to BSA’s highest rank.
“I guess Boy Scouts helped me to realize I had good leadership capabilities and that I should

use them,” said Luke, a 16-year-old rising junior at Manheim Township High School. “I stood out because I said that I wanted to become one of the people to lead the troop. I think that’s what made me a better leader, because people trusted me.”
A member of BSA Troop 99, which meets at Highland Presbyterian Church, Luke officially became an Eagle Scout during a court-of-honor ceremony on June 10. Luke admitted he was a little nervous on his special day, partly because he had worked so hard over the last 11 years to get to that point.
“I’ve always wanted to become an Eagle Scout; it was always my goal,” said Luke. “That day, I was very excited and a little anxious. But I was also proud to represent myself and my family.”
“I think it’s helped his awareness of the world and discover what’s out there,” said Luke’s mom, Mary Beth Oles, of his involvement with BSA. “Troop 99 really gets these kids out
and about. He’s had different roles in the troop, and it’s really helped his leadership skills. He’s gained the respect of the younger kids. He’s done a good job of working with the younger Scouts. It’s really been a lot of fun for him too.”
One of Luke’s final steps leading up to attaining BSA’s highest rank was the completion of his Eagle Scout project. Luke proposed, raised funds for, configured and oversaw plans to renovate and beautify a fellowship pavilion at his church, St. John Neumann, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster.
“For me, it was difficult asking for money,” said Luke of the $4,000 he raised for the project. “It’s tough to go in front of a large group of people. But I did pretty good, and my message got out there. With the Eagle Scout project, your fellow Scouts do it and you have to supervise it. That was tough for me because there was a lot of manual labor needed and I like manual labor.”
After joining Cub Scouts at the age of 7, Luke became a Boy Scout when he was 11. Along the way, he earned 22 merit badges - 21 are required of an Eagle Scout - including ones in cooking and citizenship in society, two of his favorites.
“I feel like the trail up to Eagle Scout is what’s important,” said Luke, who’s also the son of Mark Oles. “It shows you progressed and you learned skills needed for everyday life. I think the experiences have helped me become a better person. When I first joined Boy Scouts, I was a little overweight. I think it’s helped me be more fit.”
At Manheim Township High School, Luke competes on the cross-country, swim and track and field teams. Luke, who works as a lifeguard and enjoys traveling, hiking and camping, is currently considering a career in engineering or law or going into the military.
“I’m still looking to see if anything else interests me or stands out to me,” said Luke. “But I feel like (becoming an Eagle Scout) will help me be a better person in our society. One of my mottos is ‘never back away from a challenge.’ Even if you fail, you can learn from it.”
“Under
the Sea” VBS set

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.
“I think everything we do we plan meticulously. We believe events like story time introduce learning and our play programs introduce creative play. Our hope is to give families a place to go. We want to demonstrate to families how to engage with their children, how to read to their children, how to connect through reading.”
“I think we see a lot of amazing growth in children who come to
our library,” Block continued. “We see them develop. We help develop their sense of independence. It’s just amazing to see, and our families have expressed to us how our programs have helped their children.”
MTPL’s preschool activities and programs are attended by as many as 140 kids each week.
“We are serving a lot of families at the library,” said Block. “The
Cadet Camp from pg 1
to awaken that in kids.”
The fourth edition of Cadet Camp will be conducted on Friday, Aug. 2, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Lafayette Fire Company, 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster. The hands-on camp is open to individuals ages 8 to 14 from Lancaster County.
There is a fee to register, and registration ends on Monday, July 1. To register, go to www.lafayette fire.com/cadetcamp.
“The purpose is just to get kids interested,” said Herskowitz. “It gives them an opportunity to come and try it out. We want to introduce it in a fun way. We try to make the camp STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) based, and we try to tie in equipment. Sort of like, ‘You can be a responder and here’s all the things you need.’”
Cadet Camp will consist of 15 learning stations - five on Friday and 10 on Saturday. Among the topics expected be addressed are home fire safety, campfire and burn safety, hazmat, EMS, first aid, hose line basics, ropes and knots, firefighter rescue and bucket brigade.
Members of 10 local first-responder agencies will be on hand to provide guidance and assistance, as well as real-world connections for the campers.
“Some of the stations are simple,” said Herskowitz. “(Campers will) learn the ins and outs of being a volunteer. They’ll help wash a fire truck. We’ll have a critical thinking station and one geared toward team building. They
majority of our families come from Manheim Township, but we serve other members of our community as well. The children are very excited to come to our programs. They find it engaging - the crafts, the songs, the puppets.”
Curious minds are eager to learn, and learning at an early age can foster a lifelong thirst for knowledge.
“I think the social aspects of the activities are really important,” said Block. “Some of our programs are run like classrooms. It’s such a different world for kids. It’s loud and it’s a lot of people. If parents keep them coming, (kids will) come out of their shells.”
Staying true to its vision of informing, educating and inspiring, MTPL’s commitment to preschool learning hasn’t changed a lot over the years. If anything, it’s intensified.
“We’re very passionate about getting kids ready for kindergarten,” said Block. “We’re focused
on getting these kids prepared for things like holding crayons and holding scissors. It’s also an important step in the process of parents letting go and establishing independence.”

can choose to work as a team. Responders rely on their team and communication with other members.”
“The ability to work together as a member of a team is very important,” she added. “That’s an essential skill you’re going to need no matter where you go. As kids come to our camp and come back, we hope they build their skills and confidence, and hopefully they build some leadership skills.”
In 2023, 50 young individuals attended Cadet Camp. Herskowitz is aiming for a similar turnout this year.
“We want to keep them very engaged,” said Herskowitz. “In our eyes, this isn’t a camp that’s available everywhere. We’re trying to build interest in these kids and not just for our company. Our goal is to build up the emergency services world.”
While it’s still relatively new, Cadet Camp is already beginning to realize the fruits of its labor.
“It’s a little hard to judge, to see what the outcome is going to be,” said Herskowitz. “If you have kids coming in at 8 years old, it’s going to take some time to see what the returns of the camp are going to be.
We’ve already gotten a couple of junior firefighters and we’ve already gotten a couple of parent volunteers.”

To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.
Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!
