HOPE International is golfing for purpose-filled dollars

The annual HOPE International Golf Outing isn’t a professional golf tournament. But the players will be playing for money - the kind that can change people’s lives.

“Money can be used as a tool, as long as it can be used in the right way,” said Jeff Rutt, founder and chairman of HOPE International. “The power of enterprise is learning to be responsible. It allows charities to be very healthy. There’s power in money being used in the right way.”

The 24th edition of the HOPE International Golf Outing will be conducted on Friday, Sept. 13 at three courses: Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Drive, Lebanon; Wyncote Golf Club, 50 Wyncote Drive, Oxford; and the Woodlands Golf Course, 2309 Ridge Road, Windsor Mill, Md. To register, go to www.hopeinternational.org/ take-action/event/24th-annual -golf-tournament. The deadline for players to register is Sunday, Sept. 1.

“The vibe is going to be very much about engagement and learning more about the purpose (of HOPE International),” said Rutt of the atmosphere of the day. “It’s all about fellowship and

getting to know others who are like-minded. If I’m engaged in some sort of outreach, it creates a different type of purpose. It’s not about how good of a score I can get.”

Organizers of the HOPE International Golf Outing would like to draw up to 375 players total to the three courses. In conjunction

with two separate sister golf outings, the goal is to raise a total of $1.4 million for the work of the faith-based nonprofit, which includes lending programs, Christ-centered financial training, saving programs, discipleship and Bible-based training - all of which possess the power to break cycles of poverty and to change

the plights of future generations.

Over the 27 years of its existence, HOPE International has raised $280 million and lent $1.7 billion.

“There’s poverty everywhere, but it’s all relative,” said Rutt.

“There are needs everywhere. We’d love to come alongside everyone. ... We believe a holistic

It’s agricultural. It’s recreational. It’s ecologically sound. It’s economically efficient. It may even be therapeutic. But even deeper than that, there’s something fulfilling and pure and wholesome about getting your hands dirty and living off the land.

Of all the amenities and services offered by the Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department (MTRPPD), the garden plot program may be one of its most beneficial.

“With the way the world is today, this is something that doesn’t need technology,” said Matt Stopa, Manheim Township’s recreation director. “It goes back to our roots. Some of it is the way life used to be. All you need is seeds, water, earth and patience.”

And maybe a little old-fashioned sweat and fortitude.

MTRPPD’s garden plot program offers an opportunity to grow and have access to a garden for local residents who might not normally have one. For a nominal fee, the program provides individuals 20-by-40foot plots of land within the confines of the township’s compost park at 2775 Oregon Pike, Lititz.

There are 63 garden plots

Foundation supports local youth organizations

The Buffalo Wild Wings Foundation is dedicated to giving back to its communities across the country. Throughout 2024, it will donate more than $3 million to organizations that support various youth initiatives that help kids thrive, compete and belong to a team. Of the total donation amount, $1 million will go toward Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the remaining $2 million will support more than 300 local youth-serving nonprofits throughout the United States.

Locally, the Buffalo Wild Wings Foundation donated $1,800 to Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster; $3,225 to Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg; $400 to Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Harrisburg; and $2,000 to Junior Achievement of South Central Pennsylvania Inc., York.

there and they’re all usually reserved by the end of the winter months.

“People grow all sorts of things,” said Stopa. “Mainly it’s vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers and beans. Most people are planting something they can consume. There aren’t too many people planting wildflowers.”

“It’s Lancaster County, PA, so the ground is going to be good,” he added. “We put down fresh soil for everyone. We’ve never had a problem with a lack of growth.”

In cooperation with Manheim Township’s public works department and local fire companies, the garden plots are tilled in the spring, and compost, mulch and water are made available for the green-thumbed residents. MTRPPD also goes as far as filling some basic seed needs.

“It’s healthy stuff. It’s a really cool concept. There isn’t much effort on our end. Once we sell the plots, it’s your effort. People use them and enjoy them.”

MTRPPD’s garden plot program coincides with the growing season and runs from April 1 to Nov. 1. Some plots are reserved by the same residents year after year.

live in,” continued Stopa. “You become one with your garden. It’s a different way of recreating.”

For as innovative a concept as MTRPPD’s garden plot program is, no one is taking credit for the original idea.

“The purpose is to provide an opportunity for residents who may not have the ability to plant a garden at their houses,” said Stopa. “Some people use it as recreation. Some people just like to garden. It’s a lot of senior citizens. It’s a lot of residents who live in apartments and who don’t have the land to do this.”

“It’s not very hands-on for us,” said Stopa. “We don’t need employees. It’s up to the people to grow whatever they want. It’s essentially a blank canvas to grow what they want.”

“It’s all locally grown stuff,” Stopa continued.

“If there’s availability, it’s a good way to disconnect from the world we

“I don’t know who should get the credit,” said Stopa. “We’re always trying to provide affordable services for Manheim Township residents. But I’m not sure of the origin. My only regret is that it isn’t bigger. There clearly is a demand. People are put on a waiting list. We could sell more if there were more plots.”

HOPE International

approach is really impactful. Here’s a quote from one of our clients: ‘It’s really hard to focus on your prayer life when you’re hungry.’”

Headquartered at 227 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, HOPE International has a reach that has steadily expanded over its existence to provide services for those in need around the globe. HOPE International conducts 15 major regional fundraising events annually.

Since its inception in 2000, the HOPE International Golf Outing has raised more than $7 million for the mission.

“Yes, it’s golf, but it’s not about the golf,” said Rutt. “It’s what happens from the golf. While we’re having fun hitting

that little white ball, we’re looking to drive out poverty in all of its forms.

Twenty-three years ago, we started using golf as a vehicle. It just kind of stuck. We found it was a good way to engage sponsors.”

“I think some of the sponsors’ motivation comes from the why behind the mission,” continued Rutt.

“There’s a large network of folks learning about HOPE International. Hopefully, there’s going to be some folks who are interested in going on trips. The camaraderie and fun of the day is just sprinkled in. We’re going to bond together over a great cause.”

To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.

Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!
