Toys for Tots’
vehicle for enhancing young lives
BY JEFF FALK
Lancaster Toys for Tots continues to do amazing things in our community. But it’s work that can’t be done alone, or without the support of many generous donors.
Lancaster Toys for Tots’ latest venture, Touch-A-Truck Family Day, looks to build off that altruistic spirit and take the organization’s work to a whole different level.
“We’re helping kids in Lancaster County, and there’s a big need in Lancaster County,” said Gil Bixler, Lancaster Toys for Tots’ coordinator for the last 37 years. “I’ve got a fantastic team of volunteers who just enjoy doing it. That’s what it takes to make it all happen. They work harder than I do.”
Associated with the United States Marine Corps Reserve, Lancaster Toys for Tots’ Touch-ATruck Family Day is a brand-new, kid-friendly event. It will be held outdoors at Park City Center, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster, near Tires Plus, on Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free to attend, but families are encouraged to donate a new, unwrapped toy. It is also being used as a way to draw attention to autism.
“Park City came to us and said, ‘What do you think of this idea?’” said Bixler. “We thought it was great. The goal is to create awareness and supply toys for autism groups. Autism is more prevalent than you and I know. We want to get the public more aware of the needs of these children.”
On hand that day will be nearly 100 vehicles - cop cars, fire trucks, emergency medical services vehicles and tow trucks - as well as a LifeLion helicopter and a state police helicopter. Many members and representatives of police departments from Lancaster County townships and Lancaster County’s first responders will be present.
“It’s helping us and it’s great
(public relations) for them,” said Bixler of the public servants. Up to 500 people are expected to attend.
Lancaster Toys for Tots’ TouchA-Truck Family Day will also include food trucks.
“I perceive it being a growing event every year,” said Bixler, himself a retired Marine. “It’ll be a lot of families, a lot of kids, a lot of fun. The state police will show

One of the five human senses, hearing is something that can be easily taken for granted. But for those who can’t hear, there’s an element of appreciation that inspires creativity, ingenuity and a manifestation of the human spirit.
Through a wealth of services and resources, the Lancaster Center of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (LCDHH), located at 2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, which is a subsidiary
of and overseen by Keystone Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services (KDHHS) of Reading, helps individuals with hearing loss learn to listen, communicate better and generally lead fuller lives.
LCDHH client services manager and language specialist Karen Pfortsch, who has been deaf since birth, was interviewed for this article with the help of sign language interpreter Kandy Reyes, KDHHS’ president.
“Deaf individuals are happy being deaf,” said Pfortsch. “We can do everything except hear.

Lancaster Toys for Tots also raises funds for its annual Christmas toy drive for local underprivileged children by conducting a golf outing at Overlook Golf Course in May, by hosting car shows in the spring and fall and through a motorcycle ride in October.
In 2023, Lancaster Toys for Tots distributed 63,523 toys and supported 15,138 children, mostly from Lancaster County. Those toys were provided through monetary donations to Lancaster Toys for Tots
from pg 1
and through 7,000 collection bins placed throughout the county.
“Through those donations, we support 56 other organizations,” said Bixler. “Where else can you help so many children at one time? I meet so many wonderful people in this position. I really enjoy it.”
Founded in 1947 by the United State Marine Corps Reserve, Toys for Tots is a national organization with more than 800 chapters. The Lancaster chapter of Toys for Tots began in 1987 with veterans distributing new toys from the trunk of a car.

Event to feature former Pittsburgh Steelers player
the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC) and in turn LCFMC’s annual Christmas in July Fossil and Mineral Extravaganza.
“(Fossils and minerals) represent our world and life on Earth from when it began to now,” said Chris. “People are fascinated with precious gems because they’re beautiful and valuable. Generally, people know about (fossils and minerals); our culture is everywhere. Some people like it because it’s grassroots. I think it’s more relevant now than it ever was.”
This year’s Christmas in July Fossil and Mineral Extravaganza will be conducted in three rooms at Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 28. Attendees will be afforded an opportunity to peruse and purchase up to 10,000 unique fossils, minerals, crystals and jewelry from 40 licensed dealers.
sters may also appreciate interactive adventures in a geology learning center. The activities are designed for fun, but it should be noted that learning could occur.
Also on display at the show will be a rare fossil specimen of Hylonomus Iyelli, believed to be the world’s first reptile. In addition, the show will include a light-refracturing demonstration by a scientist and a presentation by a tinsmith.
Nearly 1,000 visitors are expected to attend the extravaganza over its two days. Proceeds from the event will go toward LCFMC’s operating expenses and activities.
After first being introduced at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville, LCFMC’s Christmas in July Fossil and Mineral Extravaganza moved to Farm and Home Center four years ago.

Tickets may be purchased at www.etix.com/ ticket/p/61979044/.
Tickets are also available for a VIP dinner at Homestead Village, 1800 Village Circle, Lancaster, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. prior to the feature presentation. For more information, call 717-8744226 or email jstout@ hvillage.org.
An admission fee will be charged, and the Paradise Lions Club will make refreshments available.
“It’s families with kids who are interested in paleontology and geology,” said Chris of the expected visitors that day. “It’s an enthusiastic crowd of people who come, and then you have the camaraderie. It’s a very lively atmosphere. People anticipate it every year. This is our forte; this is what we do. There’s a whole stream of history people don’t know because it’s not taught in schools.”
The fossil and mineral extravaganza will also feature a mine tour where kids bearing flashlights can find mineral samples. Young -
“(LCFMC is) a very noble thing to be involved in,” said Chris. “When you’re part of a club, new ideas will spring from it. We get to meet other clubs and other club’s people. If you like minerals and fossils, there’s nothing like it. It’s not like going to a museum and looking at what someone else found. You found it.”
Chris and Catherine Haefner founded LCFMC in 2013, and the club initially involved 12 members. Today, LCFMC’s membership numbers 130 fossil and mineral aficionados. LCFMC meets on the last Thursday of every month at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. Lititz Chocolate Walk slated
The Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area will hold the 23rd annual Lititz Chocolate Walk on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 25 locations in downtown Lititz will serve chocolate treats.
Tickets are currently on sale. Only 2,000 tickets are available for this event. Last year, 500 tickets were sold on the first day, and 800 were sold in the first week. The event typically draws visitors from 16 or more states each year, such as California, New Mexico, Alaska, and Florida.
Tickets may be purchased by cash or check at Wilbur Chocolate, 45 N. Broad St., Lititz; Zum Anker Alley Shoppes, 22 E. Main St. (rear), Lititz; Aaron’s Books, 35 E. Main St., Lititz; Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz; and Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. Credit card purchases may be made at Zum Anker Alley Shoppes and at www .lititzchocolatewalk.com.
New this year, some of the merchants and sponsors will offer coupons. These coupons will be emailed to online purchasers of the tickets prior to the event. People who purchase their tickets in person should provide their email address so they receive the coupons. To redeem the coupons, a person must show his or her Chocolate Walk button.
This fundraising event is held each year by the Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area to raise funds for the children’s charities it supports, including the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, Schreiber Center for Pediatric
Development, the Manheim Township and Lititz libraries, and Power Packs. Last year, the club - which has fewer than 30 members - was able to provide more than $100,000 to these organizations, and in the 30 years the club has been in existence, more than $1.1 million has been donated. Chocolate Walk is made possible by sponsors like Wilbur Chocolate, the retail locations and restaurants that open their doors for the event, the town of Lititz, the more than 150 volunteers, the people who buy tickets, and the chefs and chocolatiers who provide treats without compensation.
The Kiwanis Club of Lititz
Area is part of Kiwanis International, a worldwide service organization that is devoted to serving the children of the world, one child and one community at a time.
For more information about the Kiwanis Club or to volunteer at Chocolate Walk, contact Charlie Stickler at 717-560-2295 or visit www .lititzkiwanis.org.
Churches plan scrapbooking event
Oregon Community United Methodist Church (UMC) and Faith UMC will hold a scrapbooking fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fundraiser will take place at Faith UMC, 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz. All proceeds will benefit the ministries of Oregon Community UMC and Faith UMC.
Table spaces measuring 4 feet by 2 and a half feet are available to rent. Participants may choose someone to share the other half of their table. Assistance will be available to transport scrapbooking supplies from participants’ cars to their tables upon arrival and back to their cars at the end of the day. Classes will available, and door prizes will be awarded throughout the day.
Spaces are limited. Registration is preferred by Monday, July 15. To register, visit www.faithumc .us or call the church at 717-560-0321.
We can drive; we can work. American Sign Language is a beautiful language. What’s important to us is our eyes and being able to see.”
At LCDHH, individuals with hearing loss and their family members are directly and indirectly connected with services like sign language interpreters, sign language education, hearing aids, speech therapy, amplifiers, closed caption video phones, doorbell signalers, smoke and fire alarms, workshops, community activities and social events.
People who are deaf or hard of hearing also employ lip reading, facial expressions and body language as ways to receive communications, but they are more informal and learned skills that are often less accurate than sign language.
“The goal is barrier-free services and community access,” said Pfortsch. “Our goal is to empower our clients with whatever services are needed. It’s like a one-stop shop. When a person comes in here, they need to discuss their needs with us. Some might be looking for a job, and we’ll connect them with employment agencies. Some people might be struggling with reading. Some people have limited language skills. Some might need to know how to get their pensions. We’ll get them connected to the right
people. There are a variety of things we’ll do to get them help, and sometimes we do advocacy.”
LCDHH serves about 300 clients on a regular basis. According to numbers from a recent census, approximately 80,000 Lancaster County residents have some sort of hearing loss.
“We are only scratching the surface,” said Pfortsch.
“Some people have a mindset about deaf people from what they’ve seen on TV. They label all deaf people as ignorant. We have to work to prove ourselves because it’s considered a disability. But deaf people don’t think they’re disabled.”
KDHHS employs a total of 10 individuals, two of whom work out of the LCDHH office. LCDHH is a nonprofit that receives funding from donations, grants and fees from its interpreter services.
“We are known in the deaf and hard of hearing community,” said Pfortsch. “Some organizations know us, and they connect their clients with us. They’ll work with us and collaborate with us. But some people don’t know the services are available. We’re here. People are welcome to call us.”
