Book collection to provide support, perspective in battle against cancer

It seems that cancer is all around us. If we haven’t been directly affected by it ourselves, we know someone who has.

But do you know what else is universal? Books, reading and information. Knowledge is power.

The Manheim Township Public Library (MTPL) and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health’s Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute have teamed up in the ongoing battle against cancer. Their tool is a selection of books called the Cancer Survivor Collection.

“Cancer is universal,” said Rennae Newman, a grant writer and fundraiser at MTPL. “It just makes sense that we’re going to tackle something that’s universal for the community. It’s part of the Manheim Township Public Library’s collection, but it can be borrowed by anyone in the

(Library System of Lancaster County). People from all over Lancaster County will be benefiting from this collection.”

More than the ABC’s of cancer or a bunch of medical pamphlets, the Cancer Survivor Collection consists of nearly 60 books, including memoirs, journals, children’s picture books and spiritually based books designed to approach cancer from a holistic standpoint through reflection, humor, validation and personal growth. The books were authored by medical professionals, comedians and philosophers and collected with survivors, families, caregivers and supporters in mind.

“The interesting thing about this collection is that it’s very broad,” said Newman. “We expect that these books are going to be very popular. We think those titles will be very used and become part

Power Packs’ superpower is silencing growling bellies

Power Packs.

Sounds like some sort of special energy concoction. Some kind of sustenance that invigorates superheroes, enabling them to do amazing things.

Some things are exactly what they seem to be.

“The name (Power Packs Project) comes from the pack of food we provide to help kids succeed in school and have

academic success,” said Brad Peterson, Power Packs Project’s executive director. “We want to empower families to help them make good nutrition decisions. Studies have shown that children need nutrition early in life to have their brains fully develop. We’re providing that nutrition. Studies have always shown that kids sitting in school with empty bellies can’t learn.”

James Lorenzo’s message comes across loud

and clear

“Sign, sign, everywhere a sign.” The Five Man Electrical Band may have said it best.

Everywhere we look there are signs - big signs, small signs, neon signs, colorful signs, funny signs, meaningful signs. Signs that push products, that express opinions, that deliver ideas, that distract us from our everyday lives.

James Lorenzo came up with an idea for a sign designed to combat distractions. And while it may have been directed at his peer group, the sign contained a message that could be taken to heart by drivers and vehicle operators of all ages.

In May, James, then a sophomore at Manheim Township High School (MTHS), was honored with an award for his entry in the 33rd annual

that includes the recipe and ingredients for a simple, single meal, as well as some basic staples like healthy snacks, fresh produce and milk, to help families over the weekend.

Located at 1915 Olde Homestead Lane, Suite 102, Lancaster, Power Packs Project distributes and delivers its food mainly on Wednesdays and Thursdays in advance of the weekend.

“One in eight kids in Lancaster County is food insecure,” said Peterson. “They may not know where their next meal is coming from, and the numbers continue to rise. It’s kids your kids go to school with, it’s kids of the people you work with, it’s your neighbor’s kids. Who we serve are kids who are eligible for free and reduced-priced meals at school. Families can sign up for a week, a month or for as long as they need assistance.”

Power Packs Project assists food-insecure students in the school districts of Cocalico, Columbia, Donegal, Hempfield, Lampeter-Strasburg, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Warwick and Lancaster in Lancaster County; students in the Annville-Cleona, Cornwall-Lebanon, Eastern Lebanon County, Northern Lebanon and the Lebanon city school districts in Lebanon County; and students in the Eastern York School District in York County. Beginning this fall, the program will also aid kids in the Conestoga Valley and Red Lion school districts.

“The Conestoga Valley School District came to us; they saw a need,” said Peterson. “It’s a benefit for them for their kids

to have better nutrition. Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services is doing great work, and Power Packs is here to work in cooperation with them. We’re complementing each other. It’s not either/or; it’s and.”

Last school year, Power Packs Project distributed a total of 440,000 pounds of food through 95 sites and deliveries. Power Packs receives donated food from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg and through partnerships and collaborations with other organizations.

“There are a lot of misconceptions that it’s an urban problem,” said Peterson. “But it’s an urban, suburban and rural problem. There are a lot of people out there struggling with food problems. It’s hard for some to comprehend that people are going hungry.”

Power Packs Project, which was founded in 2005 and was incorporated as a nonprofit four years later, is manned by a staff of five full-time employees and a part-timer. Much of the organization’s packaging and delivery work is performed through 6,000 hours of annual volunteer commitment.

“When We Climb Trees” explores allure of gaming and screentime

Catch the world premiere of a youth musical, “When We Climb Trees,” at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The show will be performed at 2 and 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 21.

“When We Climb Trees” tells the story of a tightknit group of friends who struggle with the conflict between sharing real-life adventures and succumbing to the draw of gaming devices and screentime.

“This show is really about finding balance between time to play, pretend, be a kid and be with friends with the ever-present allure of screentime and gaming,” said Steven Courtney, who wrote the

show. “I find it interesting to observe the youthful cast as they ‘pretend’ to bring this ‘play’ to life through their hard work yet willing spirits. Collectively, there are so many elements of teamwork, collaboration and planning to produce this playful, upbeat show with a rather serious undertone. More and more studies are showing the addictive power of devices.”

Courtney, who is the producer, songwriter and playwright of the show through Sun Hill Productions, worked in partnership with Kami Deppen of Big Dream Players, who is directing the show and served as costumer and set designer. The pair held auditions earlier this year for local youths to record

the musical’s soundtrack.

“The recording of the soundtrack demo was super fun, and it went as good as we could have hoped,” Courtney recalled. “We used the demo versions of the songs to share with the cast. After the cast selection process, we provided the soundtrack for actors to rehearse with prior to our official rehearsals. The instrumental parts of the soundtrack will be used in the live show, and the cast will sing live vocals for the performance.”

The cast of “When We Climb Trees” is primarily youths ages 10 to 16 from Lancaster and York counties.

This is the first youth musical Courtney, a singer-songwriter, has written, but he knows it won’t be his last.

“I am presently developing a new musical themed

around my song ‘Steven the Pirate,’” he shared. “I’m having a blast exploring the options for the storyline. There are a few other ideas in the vault as well. I do think I’ll stay in the ‘youth musical’ lane for moving forward.”

He hopes audiences will enjoy “When We Climb Trees,” noting that it will be performed in Landis Hall, a state-of-the-art production theater at the Junction Center.

“This show is all-ages

friendly and will run around 65 minutes,” he said. “Bring the whole family.”

Tickets will be available at the door or may be purchased in advance at www .thejunctioncenter.com/ when-we-climb-trees.

since 2013 to access permanent housing. The money was the result of HARTZ PT’s third annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament, which was held on May 10 at Crossgates Golf Club in Millersville.

The Spring Swing Golf Tournament was organized by HARTZ PT therapists and avid golfers Daulton Rutter and Kevin Sisbarro.

regional No Excuses Youth Traffic Billboard Design contest, which is sponsored by the national agency Center for Traffic Safety and State Farm Insurance. His entry, “Driving isn’t a game,” was chosen as the top selection from 180 Lancaster County entries.

After the design entries were submitted, a panel of judges picked James’ entry as the winner.

A federally funded organization, the Center for Traffic Safety provides driver and traffic safety education in Lancaster, Lebanon, York and Adams counties. A winner was chosen from each of those counties.

“The mission is to reduce crashes and fatalities in all aspects of driving,” said Danielle Horan, the Lancaster-Lebanon coordinator at the Center for

Traffic Safety. “This contest is directed at aggressive driving.”

For his design work, James won $100 and the Manheim Township School District received $1,000. In addition, James’ “Driving isn’t a game” design was prominently displayed on a billboard along New Holland Pike in Lancaster for more than two months.

To emphasize his message, James’ design featured three video-game hearts, which are generally used to represent the level of a player’s health in a video game. According to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) statistics, distracted driving is one of the leading causes of crashes in the state.

MTPL, which is located at 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, publicly unveiled the Cancer Survivor Collection during a formal ceremony on June 26. The collection will be prominently displayed for about a month.

“With this collection, we have more access to knowledge (about cancer) than we ever had,” said Newman. “These books are going to connect us with information from appropriate

sources. We think this will help families in their fights against cancer. We think that it takes knowledge to another level.”

The inspiration for the collaboration between MTPL and the Barshinger Cancer Institute was Jennie Barbieri, a physician, the mother of a cancer survivor and a former member of the MTPL Foundation’s board.

The partnership could serve as a blueprint for meaningful MTPL collaborations moving forward.

MTEF presents awards

Weston Groff and Rylie Martin won this year’s James L. and Jane Louise Wertz Awards. The Manheim Township Educational Foundation (MTEF) presents the awards annually to two freshman students in recognition of improvement and accomplishment. The students are nominated and selected by faculty members and administrators.

The James L. and Jane Louise Wertz Award was established in memory of the Wertz siblings, who graduated in 1982 and 1985, respectively, by their parents to recognize that the transition from middle

were killed on Pennsylvania roadways in 2023. From the World Health Organization, traffic accident injuries are one of the three leading causes of death among adolescents.

“I think that’s a very impactful statement,” said Horan. “(James) went at it from a video game perspective. The point is you don’t get more than one chance, unlike a video game. His idea was to relate it in a peer-to-peer way. He felt he could relate more to his peers than in any other way.”

James completed his project as part of the Environmental Design Unit in Courtney Hauer’s Graphics II class at MTHS. In addition to research and identifying key elements for effective billboard communication - like proper spacing, contrasting colors,

the use of short simple phrases and legible typography - James employed an Adobe Illustrator program in his work.

When Hauer announced the results of the contest to her class, James was excited and in disbelief that he had won.

James’ victory marked the third time in five years that a MTHS student took home top honors in the No Excuses Youth Traffic Billboard Design contest. MTHS students were also victorious in 2023 and 2020.

The timing of the No Excuses Youth Traffic Billboard Design contest is meant to coincide with the 100 deadliest days of summer, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day that is statistically the most dangerous time of the year for teen drivers.

“It’s not just because of kids being out of school,” said Horan. “It’s also when people do a lot of traveling, and there are a lot of holidays as well.”

For additional information on the Center for Traffic Safety, search “Center for Traffic Safety” on Facebook.com.

“(Cancer) can be a lonely and long journey,” said Barbieri. “Information to help answer the many questions parents and children have and hearing others share how they got through it can be a tremendous help.”

“We haven’t done a ton of these collaborations,” said Newman. “I’d like to hint that maybe there are some more to come. The library’s main mission is to be a community hub, and this collection plays into that mission.”

According to the World Health Organization, in 2018, more than 18 million new cases of cancer were reported and 9.6 million people died of the disease worldwide. While cancer can spread and affect many different parts of the body, cancers of the lung, female breast and colorectal portion of the digestive tract are the most common worldwide.
