Cody McSherry has been performing for as long as he can remember. In many ways, performing is at the core of what he does and who he is.
As he prepares to experience things in life that he never has before, the 2021 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School
and native of Conestoga can’t imagine an existence without performing.
“As a person, I’ll continue to perform,” said McSherry, who’s on track to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh in May of 2025. “I don’t know who it will be with or if it will be solo. ... Performing is something you do forever.”

Two million bucks.
That’s a lot of dough. That’s a lot of greenbacks. That’s a lot of moolah.
That’s a lot of learning opportunities.
This past spring, the Manheim
Township Educational Foundation (MTEF) surpassed the $2 million mark for the cumulative amount of grants it has awarded to teachers, administrators and students seeking to take education up a notch. It’s a significant milestone that symbolizes MTEF’s commitment to
kids, educators and the future of the community.
“The grant program is really the major focus of the organization,” said Becky Doumaux, who’s been MTEF’s executive director for a year. “That’s how we give back to the school district the most. We want to bring together

living SENIOR
Seniors can swim their way to improved health
Exercise provides a number of measurable benefits for people of all ages, including older adults. Swimming is one exercise that may be especially beneficial for seniors.
Many people learn to swim in childhood and sharpen that skill as they get older. Although swimming devotees may get in the water for fun rather than fitness, this pastime may be the ideal exercise for seniors looking to improve their overall health, particularly because it is very low-impact.
Because the water provides buoyancy, there is reduced risk of injury and minimal strain on the body. Water exercises, including swimming, work all the muscle groups, so it can be a complete exercise, says American Senior Communities. Swimming also is a great cardiovascular exercise that can strengthen the heart muscle and improve lung function and endurance. Because it lowers blood pressure and improves circulation, swimming is a great way to get the heart pumping.
A gentle, 30-minute swim can burn up to 200 calories, which is more than would be
used when walking. A faster swim can burn calories more quickly than running or cycling, and since water supports up to 90% of the body’s weight, this activity will put less stress on muscles and joints while one is exercising.
Individuals with mobility issues or arthritis pain may find that swimming helps relieve discomfort and improves range of motion. The water is doing much of the work holding up the body, which takes the stress off joints, helping a person to feel better while moving.
Even seniors who don’t know how to swim can reap the benefits of water exercise. Walking in shallow water or using a kickboard to stay above the water can be effective. Using foam dumbbells or even pushing and pulling one’s arms through the water can serve as a great resistance exercise that builds strength.
Swimming and additional water activities are great ways for seniors to stay in shape. As always, individuals should speak with their doctors before beginning any exercise regimen to ensure that it is safe.
On the road again: Tips to help seniors travel safely
Travel was once a key component of the picture that working professionals created of their ideal retirements. While the COVID19 pandemic put many retirement travel plans on hold in recent years, jetting off to distant locales is once again on retirees’ radars. Eagerness to get back on the road, in the air or on the high seas could make it easy to overlook some principles of safe travel. Such an oversight could lead to complications that could make it hard to enjoy time away from home. The following tips may reduce the likelihood that seniors encounter trouble while traveling.
- Determine if any health issues are affecting the planned destination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers an online resource that provides the latest travel health notices for a multitude of travel destinations, along with recommendations of vaccinations that travelers should have. To access the resource, visit www.cdc.gov/travel/page/ travel-vaccines.
- Speak to a physician. A pre-trip consultation with a physician can uncover any issues that might arise during a trip. Health conditions may be easily managed for domestic travelers who are not planning to visit any especially remote locations, but some issues may not necessarily be as easily navigated when traveling overseas. Physicians can also recommend vaccinations or other measures to protect one’s health while traveling. In
addition, a pre-trip doctor visit is a great time to refill prescriptions that will be needed during a vacation.
- Take financial precautions as well. Of course, not all travel-related concerns are medical. Finances also require attention prior to a trip. Inflation has caused a sharp spike in the price of various commodities since the start of 2022, so travelers should study up on the cost of food and attractions at their destination to ensure they take enough money. Baggage costs have risen significantly in recent years, so seniors traveling on a budget may want to pack less and do laundry while traveling in an effort to save money. In addition, the unpredictable nature of travel since the onset of the pandemic has underscored the utility of travel insurance. Seniors can look into travel insurance that could reimburse them in the case of delays or cancellations.
- Privately share the trip itinerary. Prior to departing, travelers should share their itinerary with friends and family members. They should avoid sharing the itinerary on social media platforms, which can make them a target for criminals at home and at their destination. The itinerary should include where travelers are staying, the dates they will visit certain locations and the dates of activities they will be engaging in on the trip.
Seniors rediscovering the joy of traveling can take various measures to make their trips more safe.

McSherry is currently a singing, dancing, accordion-playing, music-producing member of the Pittsburgh-based, nationally known traveling performance troupe, the Tamburitzans, whose members are all college students. When McSherry graduates from college this spring, his four-year stint with the Tamburitzans will end.
“(The four years with the Tamburitzans have) been great,” said McSherry. “You form bonds in the Tamburitzans. You’re living together on tours, and we all share in the joy of performing. We all have a lot in common. It’s a great way to explore performing.”
McSherry. “I’d like it to be the biggest performance of the Tamburitzans in Lititz, just because I want to share the moment with as many people as possible. I tend to be a person who likes to look ahead. This is definitely a chapter that will be hard to close. ... I’ll definitely be excited at the Lititz show. It’s going to be a weird feeling for sure.”
For McSherry, performing is a way to interact with an audience and a tool used for teaching and entertaining.

McSherry will perform with the group one final time in Lititz on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m. at Warwick Middle School, 401 Maple St. The hourand-40-minute show titled “Legacy” will feature the 25-member Tamburitzans performing folk music and dancing from eight different countries and regions of the world.
Tickets for the performance can be purchased at www.thetamburitzans.org.
Following the Lititz show, McSherry will perform with the Tamburitzans at a number of venues across the country before his time with the troupe ends in the spring.
“From the audience’s perspective, it’s going to be an exciting show,” said McSherry. “You’re experiencing a lot of bright and energetic dances. You get an enormous variety of music, which keeps the audience engaged in the show.”
“This is the last performance of the Tamburitzans in Lititz which I will be a part of,” continued
“I think performing, specifically music and dance, is one of the best ways to share a culture,” said McSherry. “You’re playing really fun music, and you’re getting to show off a little bit. For me, it’s about exposing a culture to people. It’s a lot about being an ambassador for that culture.”
McSherry’s post-graduation plans include learning, teaching and graduate school.
“I want to teach,” said McSherry. “I’ve wanted to teach language for years. I’m a little indecisive about which languages, but I’m leaning toward the Slavic languages. I want to be a professor.”

community resources to enhance student opportunities. If the Manheim Township Education Foundation didn’t exist, I have no doubt that the school district would be thriving. It just wouldn’t have the extra resources, materials and experiences (students and educators have) been exposed to.”
In May, MTEF awarded a $10,400 grant titled “Brick by Brick: Constructing a Brighter Future with Lego Spike Prime” to benefit Landis Run Intermediate School students. That award pushed the total amount of grant money handed out by MTEF since its 1993 inception past the $2 million milestone.
During that time, MTEF has awarded nearly 600

grants - in increments of a couple hundred dollars to thousands of dollars - for a wide variety of activities, from hip-hop dancing, coding, support for students with autism, salad parties, planetarium programs and magnetic phonics kits to robotics, speakers, library programs, 3-D printing and club activities.
“Every grant is different, and that’s the beauty of it,” said Doumaux. “What I love are the times when I can see a grant in action and see when the light bulb goes on. There are so many ways to reach kids. To me, providing a variety of resources is the most exciting thing we do.”
MTEF raises funds for its grant program through community and corporate donations, donations from
private foundations and government grant programs. Following an application and review process, its grants are awarded for special projects designed to enhance the Manheim Township education experience.
“Basically, we bring resources to the table that wouldn’t be available through the normal school budget,” said Doumaux. “I think a lot of students don’t realize MTEF is funding those projects, because it’s done so seamlessly, and that’s how it should be.
But it’s neat to hear about the impact. So many of our grants reach far more than the year of their implementation. The impact continues to happen year after year.”
More than 5,900 students from prekindergar -
ten through 12th grade are enrolled in the Manheim Township School District during the 2024-25 school year. The Manheim Township School District operates six elementary schools, an intermediate school, a middle school and a high school.
“We’re bringing new education experiences to our learners,” said Doumaux. “For MTEF, we exist to support the school district and support the learners. We always value ideas and input. MTEF is a great way to invest in our schools, invest in our future. We all have a stake in our future and the education of our students.”

PASR sets Retirement Fair
The Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) will host a Retirement Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The event is geared for people working in public schools in Pennsylvania who would like information about retirement.
To register before Oct. 15, call 717-928-4432.
PASR began in 1937 to support retiring school employees as they transitioned from work to retirement. The organization’s activities include assisting members with supplemental health insurance and dental and vision care insurance, providing opportunities for travel both locally and around the world, and aiding school retirees who are unable to care for themselves completely. PASR is not a union.
Lancaster County School Retirees (LCSR), the local chapter of PASR, is one of more than 60 chapters across the state sharing updates for retirees, providing deals on members’ benefits, and offering social activities. Members also participate in fundraising events for schools and students and
receive discounted prices at many local businesses. PASR has supported more than 3,000 members who are unable to leave their residences or who need special attention in senior living homes.
In the last 12 years, LCSR has raised more than $60,000 for scholarships for high school students across the county who plan to pursue further studies in the field of education. In the last five years, the organization has also raised more than $20,000 to provide grants to school employees for science lab equipment, library materials, musical instruments, physical education equipment, and more. Members volunteer at food and clothing banks, libraries, schools and hospitals, day care centers, and other locations. The organization annually recognizes outstanding school employees who were nominated by local school leaders.
This fall, PASR will award a $5,000 grant for funding for special programs in public schools. PASR received more than 1,200 applications for the grant from across the state.
PASR’s offices are located in Mechanicsburg.
