The Mellinger home was awarded second place. “This house was beautifully decorated with classic white lights and included touches of red (poinsettias),” noted McKenna. The home’s surrounding fence was also strung with lighted garland.

Third place went to the Entress family. “Their house had lots of lights along with a variety of character stakes as well,” McKenna said. The home also included large Christmas ornaments suspended from the front porch and a lighted walkway.

Honorable mention was given to Impact Church for its outdoor Nativity, as well as for lights and ornaments that were placed on trees outside the church. Accepting the award on behalf of the church was pastor Mike Bailey.

Photos of all of the winners can be found on the club’s Facebook page, which can be found by searching for “Parkesburg Lions Club.”

“Our residents provided many festive and beautifully decorated homes for the community to enjoy,” McKenna said. “It really does add to the beauty of the season, and (their) efforts are appreciated.”

McKenna announced that the Parkesburg Lions Club has several ongoing community service projects, and the public is invited to contribute.

“We collect eyeglasses that get recycled into new glasses. These can be dropped off at a variety of local eye doctor’s offices, at Walmart and at the Parkesburg Library,” she noted. The library is located at 105 West St., Parkesburg, and Walmart is located at 100 Commons Drive, Parkesburg.

The Lions Club is also participating in the Trex Recycling Challenge program. Groups that collect more than 500 pounds of plastic refuse in a six-month span can earn a highperformance composite bench for their community.

“We are continually collecting plastics to be used to earn benches through Trex. These benches will become part of our community as we earn them,” McKenna stated. Receptacles are located at Fulton Bank, 100 W. First Ave., Parkesburg, and the Parkesburg Library.

Plastic items that can be donated include plastic grocery bags, newspaper sleeves, empty ice bags and bread bags and the plastic that is used to wrap a case of bottled water. A complete list of plastics that will be accepted is available on the club’s Facebook page in a post dated May 30, 2021.

The Parkesburg Lions Club, which has a motto of “We Serve,” is always looking for new members. The club meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Parkesburg Baptist Church, 103 West St., Parkesburg.

Boot Up for Winter

Pennsylvania Master Naturalist, a nonprofit organization, will partner with Green Valleys Watershed Association this spring to train citizen volunteers in the natural sciences. The program is geared for adults who want to learn about nature, enjoy the outdoors, and be a part of natural resource protection.

Once accepted, trainees will attend a 50-hour course made up of weekly classroom instruction and Saturday field sessions. The classroom sessions will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, March 30 to June 8, and the field sessions will occur on April 9, April 23, May 7 and May 21. COVID-19 safety protocols will be followed, and proof of vaccination will be required.

After the course, participants will take part in 30 hours of service and eight hours of continuing education to become certified. Master Naturalists must complete 20 hours of service and 12 hours of continuing education each year to maintain their status as a certified Master Naturalist volunteer.

Those who apply for the training by Saturday, Jan. 15, will receive a discount. The final deadline to apply is Friday, Feb. 4, and space is limited. More information can be found at www.pamasternaturalist.org. Scholarships are available.

Pennsylvania Master Naturalist is dedicated to training knowledgeable volunteers committed to protecting Pennsylvania’s natural heritage with partnering organizations. Volunteers’ service includes habitat restoration, native planting projects, educational nature walks, and water quality monitoring. Volunteers have contributed more than 70,000 hours of conservation service since 2010.

A full training schedule and application information can be found by visiting the aforementioned website and looking under “Become a Master Naturalist” and “Training Courses.” For additional information, email SEprogram@ pamasternaturalist.org.
