What was once a storage room at the Stoltzfus family farm in Gap has been transformed into a Christian library by Sam Stoltzfus, who established the library in 2015 as a way to honor God and share his love of reading with the community.

The Stoltzfus Christian Library,

located at 5809 Limeville Road, Gap, offers more than 4,500 family-friendly books covering topics such as Anabaptist history and biblical subjects, along with cookbooks and books about gardening, landscaping, home repair, nature, health and more.

Like with a public library, patrons are provided with a library card, which allows them to check out books from the library for a

period of three weeks, with the option to renew the item for an additional three weeks. Books can be renewed in person, by voicemail or online.

Stoltzfus got the idea to create the library while recovering from serious injuries that occurred during a 2014 construction accident when he was pinned under a 3,000-pound excavator. “My first thought was that I was going to

die. My second thought was, ‘Am I ready to die?’” he shared. “Suddenly there was peace that washed over me, and I felt God’s presence closer than ever before. I cried out, ‘God, help me,’ and right as I said that, the machine that was on my back counterbalanced and rolled back over on its side. If it would have stayed on me, I would not be here to tell the story.”

The Parkesburg Consortium of Community Leaders will present its first community engagement event on Thursday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD), 329 W. First Ave., Parkesburg. The community is invited to learn about the organizations and businesses in the Parkesburg area and get details about upcoming events. Information about volunteer opportunities will also be available.

“The purpose of the event is to get the community more involved in the committees that already exist in the borough,” said Tina O’Connor, who is a member of the consortium as well as the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC). “Anyone in the surrounding area is welcome to attend.”

Organizations that will participate include the Parkesburg Historic Commission, KVFD, Parkesburg Lions Club, PAC, Parkesburg Free Library, the Parkesburg POINT youth center, the Parkesburg VFW, Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Commission and the Octorara Area Food Cupboard.

Also represented at the event will be the Borough of Parkesburg; the Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach (PCCO), which provides assistance to local individuals and families in need; and Everybody Plays! The latter group is a community organization that is looking to renovate the playground at Minch Park so that it is accessible to children of all abilities.

Church offers service, fellowship meal

The community is welcome not only to take part in Sunday worship at New Beginnings Church of the Cross in Christiana, but also to enjoy a buffet-style meal that follows the 10 a.m. service.

The food is served downstairs in the church’s fellowship hall. “People can go through and help themselves,” said congregation member Russ Huggins, noting that homemade desserts are offered along with coffee and other beverages. “It’s a way to reach out to people. It gives them a chance to (worship), hear the sermon and get a good meal.”

He noted that 50 to 75 people eat together each week, but newcomers are welcome. “When he sees someone new, the pastor (Kurt Schenk) will eat with them,” Huggins said. See Meal pg 8

Stoltzfus had collapsed lungs and a broken femur, among other injuries. “That was a wakeup call in my life,” he said. “During my recovery time, I was thinking about what I could do (to honor God). I thought of a library. Growing up, I was a serious bookworm, and I just love reading.”

Stoltzfus and his family members remodeled the storage room, adding electricity, heating and air conditioning, paneling, flooring and bookshelves, which they purchased from a local woodworking shop. Stoltzfus also purchased a stateof-the-art barcode and scanning system to allow people to check out their own books.

At first, the library was filled with books from the family’s personal library along with some purchased books. “We started out lowkey. We started with 1,600 items. We were feeling out (if there was) a need in the community,” said Stoltzfus.

That question was soon answered when a library grand opening was held on March 14, 2015. “I was thinking we would have about 50 or so people show up,” said Stoltzfus. “On our grand opening, we had over 200 people. Literally, by the end of the day, the bookshelves were basically wiped out.”

Today, books are sorted and color-coded in 15 categories, including children’s and preschool Christian books, Bible/bedtime stories and history and geography. The library also features a reading area with a scenic view of the surrounding farmland. Patrons may also purchase snacks and beverages to enjoy while reading.

The Stoltzfus Christian Library is open on Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call 717-672-1587 or visit www.stoltzfuschristian library.org.

“It’s a very warm and friendly place. (We) make you feel at home.”

Huggins explained that the church opened in Christiana four years ago after leaving a

United Methodist Church congregation in Maryland.

“(The church) met for a year in Nottingham, Maryland, and then this property came up for sale and they moved to

Christiana,” he said.

Sunday worship features a sermon, readings from Scripture and praise music. Attendees can sing along as the lyrics are projected onto a screen. “We also have a time of ‘joys and concerns’ - if you have a praise report or a request for prayer, you can participate in that,” Huggins noted.

Sunday school for people of all ages is held prior to the service at 9 a.m.

“People sit around fellowship hall for about an hour eating and getting to know about each other’s lives,” Huggins added. “Since the church used to be located in Maryland, we have people come from that area. It’s a fun thing. We are like one big family.”

when the first Europeans traveled west on the ancient Minqua Trail used by indigenous people for centuries. Cresting what is now called Gap Hill on that wooded trail, the pioneers could glimpse lush meadows in the valley, as well as forests that stretched for miles.

In 1681, Britain’s King Charles II granted William Penn the huge territory later known as Pennsylvania. History class taught us that he aimed for a “Peaceable Kingdom,” where the original inhabitants of the area and newly arrived Europeans could live together side by side. However, many of the new settlers found it hard to comply with Penn’s ideals. Their culture believed in land ownership, while to the Native Americans, the land belonged to God. Cultivating a particular plot for which they had set limits defined by a deed meant a lot to the English, German and Welsh settlers but contradicted indigenous beliefs.

store, the Gap Post Office, the Gap Town Clock and McDonald’s still covered with trees and dotted with temporary Native American and English campfires. For whatever reason, Penn decided to sign the treaty right there that night. Perhaps he recognized the building animosity of the Susquehannock warriors over pioneer violations of the original treaty and wanted to ensure a safe journey onward. Whatever the reason, sheepskin copies of the treaty were opened on a flat rock for signatures to rededicate both sides to peaceful coexistence. That rock has been recognized for centuries as the one at the sharp bend of the south end of Chestnut Street in Gap. Today, a sign hangs at the location designating that significant event.

By 1701, the situation was beginning to test the original treaty. Promises to the Native Americans were not being kept by settlers in this southcentral part of Pennsylvania. To reestablish good relations with the Susquehannocks, Penn himself traveled to meet the chiefs of that tribe to reaffirm the old Treaty of Peace. The area now known as Gap was a day’s horseback ride from Philadelphia. Gap was thus the obvious place for chiefs to meet Penn before escorting his party to their campgrounds on the Susquehanna River. Greetings and renewal of friendships would, of course, have been part of the meeting.

Imagine the area around what is now the Turkey Hill convenience

Of course, a celebration accompanied this reaffirmation of intended good relations among the two civilizations. Feasting, dancing and general partying presumably lasted into the night. Before venturing farther with his Native escorts, Penn is reported to have rested in a nearby cave and had a breakfast of produce from the gardens that the Natives maintained near today’s Gap Post Office.

Local residents are encouraged to view the flat rock, which once felt the hand of William Penn in his attempt at joining two diverse cultures. Take a moment to imagine what Penn and those chiefs would think of our little corner of the world were they to join us today.

Tax reassessment initiative posted

United Way of Chester County, in partnership with Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania, is accepting applications for its Mobile Home Tax Reassessment initiative for the 2023 season. This program offers free assistance to mobile home owners in Chester County to file property tax reassessment appeals and will do all the work and pay the fees on behalf of the homeowners in the program.

To help spread awareness, United Way of Chester County will host six inperson events. Assistance will be available in both English and Spanish.

All informational events will run from 5 to 7 p.m. Events will take place on Tuesday, April 18, at Avon Grove Library, 117 Rosehill Ave., West Grove; Monday, April 24, at Oxford Village, 2 Dolinger Drive, West Grove; Thursday, May 18, at Phoenixville Public Library, 183 Second Ave., Phoenixville; Wednesday, June 21, at Oxford Library, 48 S. Second St., Oxford; Thursday, July 13, at Phoenixville Public Library; and Wednesday, July 19, at Oxford Village.

To be considered for the 2023 reassessments, visit www.unitedfor mobilehomes.com and fill out the reassessment form. The deadline to fill out this form is Thursday, July 13, as the Chester County Reassessment filing window is from Monday, May 1, through Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Once the form is complete, United Way of Chester County will contact the client to schedule an intake appointment with a representative from Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania. A paralegal will complete the forms and will contact the client for their signature. A volunteer from United Way of Chester County will take photos of the home for documentation. Clients will be notified of the results of their reassessment appeals in October.

Individuals who recently appealed their taxes should wait between two to five years to reappeal, based on the year of their mobile home. To learn more about the Mobile Home Tax Reassessment project, visit the website noted above or call 877-4295994 for assistance in English or 610436-4510 for assistance in Spanish.

To learn more about the United Way of Chester County, visit www.liveunitedchestercounty.org.

Re-enactor to present program

The Historical Society of Salisbury Township will meet on Thursday, April 20, at 7 p.m. at the Salisbury Township Building, 5581 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap.

John Voris will portray John G. Nicolay, Abraham Lincoln’s private secretary. Voris is a direct descendant of Nicolay.
