Attendees will have a chance to meet the authors of the historical society’s newest publication, “Civil War Veterans Who Lived in or Were Buried in Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, PA.” Alfred Brown, Alfred Gerhardt Jr. and Joan Lorenz have assembled the book to honor the Civil War soldiers of the area. The project began in September 2011 and was completed in October 2018. The 569-page book contains 439 full biographies as well as photos, newspaper clippings and other documents. “I did a small project for Westtown Township in Chester County. Salisbury,” said Brown, explaining how the project got started. “I’m an English teacher, so I’m used to doing things like this. With these two guys working so hard and so well, it was a pleasure,” Lorenz said, praising Brown and Gerhardt, both of whom are veterans. “I’m very proud. Here these two veterans now are able to spotlight veterans of earlier times.” Information was gathered from hundreds of newspaper clippings, obituaries, letters and other documents. Sources are fully cited in footnotes. The bulk of the biographies cover Union veterans, but there were a few area residents who served the Confederacy. One chapter covers the complex history of Martin Buzzard, who began as a Union Army member, but switched sides after he was captured. Captured again by the North, he returned to Union Army. Beth Israel Congregation of Chester County has planned several special events in April and May, and the community is invited to participate. The activities will include a reunion of congregation members, a Holocaust remembrance and a day of service. The reunion will be held on Saturday, April 27, at 9:30 a.m. for all those who celebrated their bat and bar mitzvahs at Beth Israel. “We’re asking all of the members for the last several generations or those who have had bar or bat mitzvah services to come to our Saturday morning service, and we will honor them,” said Rabbi Jon Cutler, noting that this is a firsttime event at Beth Israel. He explained that a bar mitzvah is a Jewish coming-of-age ritual for boys, while a bat mitzvah is a coming-of-age ritual for girls. “At the age of 13, a boy or a girl officially becomes a member of the Jewish community and participates in prayer, reading the Torah and giving a homily or explanation of the Scripture readings,” Cutler noted. “At the age of 13, you have this initiation rite and every year it’s an anniversary you recognize. For example, my anniversary is on July 5, and this year it will be 50 years (since my bar mitzvah).” Scheduled to attend the event is a current congregation member who is celebrating the 80th anniversary of his bar mitzvah, which took place when the synagogue was located in Coatesville. A Yom HaShoah Shabbat Service and commemoration of the Holocaust will take place at Beth Israel on Friday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m. Featured will be guest speaker U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan. Houlahan, who served in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserve, will speak about her father, Andrew, a Holocaust survivor, who later went on to serve as a career naval officer for the United States. “Once a year we recognize Holocaust Remembrance Day in the Jewish community,” said Cutler. “Last year, we rededicated the Holocaust garden. This year, we thought that (hosting) Congresswoman Houlahan would be really appropriate.” Cutler also announced that congregation members will take part in an Interfaith Day of Service on Saturday, May 4, from noon to 4 p.m. During the annual event, people from various religious denominations work side-by-side to complete projects in the community. The day is sponsored by the Interfaith Action Community, an organization consisting of individuals from Beth Israel Congregation and several local churches and faith com-

Conference from pg 4 volunteered at her daughter’s school. The guest speaker at the lunch will be Joyce Chester, president and CEO of the Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC). Amber Little, candidate for state representative, will be the master of ceremonies. “After lunch comes even more fun things,” Johnson added. “We will have a whole area for pampering - massages, makeovers, haircuts and hair styling and essential oil treatments. And, we will (offer) Zumba.” Johnson said the event has grown through the years, noting activities are held in the school’s two gymnasiums, the cafeteria and the classrooms. “The first few years about 50 to 70 women attended, but it has since doubled,” she stated. “We also have giveaways and (prize drawings). Everybody walks out with pink bags with a lot of gifts in them. No one leaves empty handed.” Likewise, she added, children will enjoy special games and activities while their moms are participating in conference events. “What I’m really excited about is the activities they plan for the kids. It’s a fun day even for them,” Johnson noted. The event will feature a display of vehicles ranging from hot rods

However, donations of various items, as well as money, will be accepted to create care packages that will be sent to servicemen and servicewomen who are currently serving overseas in all branches of the Armed Forces. late 2008, and we officially had our first general meeting with many more in attendance in early February 2009,” he stated. “Since then, we have grown to over 100 members and associates - spouses and significant others - strong.” He noted that in addition to meetings, the club hosts a variety of car show events. “Our events have grown over the years as we have developed a following in the hobby and the communities in which we serve,” O’Fria said. “We host Cruise for the Troops cruise nights each season at Main Street at Exton, as well as our annual Drive Out Hunger car show and food drive at Downingtown East High School to benefit the Chester County Food Bank. Around Halloween time each year, we host a Halloween Cruise-In, with trick-ortreating activities for the kids to benefit our TDC Automotive Education Scholarship Fund.” He said the club also offers networking among car owners and social activities. “Besides hosting these events for our communities, we also like to have fun as a club, too,” said O’Fria. “Each year we host an annual club dinner/banquet in the winter months, as well as a club picnic and Road Rally each spring. In the past we have held a Fourth of July ‘Carbecue,’ as well as monthly ‘Cruise-To’ events that we all cruise together to. Closer to the holiday season, we host our annual Christmas party, as well as assemble and deliver Christmas stockings to the local (Coatesville) VA Hospital for our vets.” Club members, who pay a yearly membership fee, meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Chester County Food Bank, 650 Pennsylvania Drive, Exton. Guests are welcome. For more information, readers may visit www.facebook.com/tdc motorclub or www.tdcmotor club.com, email tdcmotorclub @gmail.com or call 484-206-5109.

planning, resource development, life skills and parenting support, mentoring/volunteer support and financial assistance for rent, utilities and transportation. In 2017, Good Samaritan Services took Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties under its wing via a merger between the nonprofits. Both had the same mission but offered different services, so combining allowed them to be even more effective in accomplishing their goals. “As a result of the merger, families in our Bridge of Hope @ GSS program can now participate in our Matched Savings and Microloan programs,” explained Nate Hoffer, the CEO of Good Samaritan Services. “The Matched Savings program awards $600 and the Microloan program awards loans up to $2,500 to clients, which, when paid back, rebuilds their credit.” In October 2018, the Bridge of Hope @ GSS program was given several awards from Bridge of Hope National for being the highest-performing program site in the network across both the U.S. and Canada. “We received awards for serving the most families and successfully helping families move into permanent housing,” said Hoffer. Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) will again partner with Bridge of Hope @ GSS for the 12th annual Golf Outing, which completely benefits the nonprofit. “We have been supporting Bridge of Hope @ GSS for the past decade, impressed by the continued progress they continue to make in the lives of our neighbors,” said EPC publisher Jocelyn Engle, who spearheads the event. “We are passionate to benefit organizations that recognize the importance to provide wholeness to individuals and families in need of support.”

In the past decade of the partnership, EPC has raised a total of $135,000, which has been directly used to provide rental assistance and case management services to the families in the Bridge of Hope program. “We recognize that our strong community can have a positive influence, not only financially but emotionally and physically, to provide assistance to our neighbors. cruelty laws in Pennsylvania to protect large animals from abuse, neglect or cruelty through education, abuse investigation and adoptions. Geiger, LAPS board members and humane agents are all volunteers. During the open house, visitors will be able to meet animals that have been rescued and are available for adoption, including a Thoroughbred horse, a pony and a miniature horse. “This is where the animals are brought and prepared for adoption,” Geiger explained. “If (the new owners) move or can’t afford to keep it, the animal comes back. It’s a lifetime commitment.” LAPS rescues farm animals, including horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, donkeys, mules and burros. “LAPS was incorporated in 1988. The local SPCA at the time could not rescue large animals and there was no one to call if someone saw a horse being abused and that’s how we got started,” Geiger said. “What makes us unique is that we have no paid staff and we do not pay our humane agents.” According to www.largeanimalprotectionsociety.org, the humane agency has state authority to investigate cruelty complaints and prosecute offenders in order to enforce Pennsylvania’s animal cruelty laws in Chester, Delaware, and Lancaster counties.
