Library to host special event

After being canceled last October because of bad weather, the Atglen Public Library (APL) Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire will return on Saturday, June 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities will be take place around APL, located at 121 Main St., Atglen.

For the love of horses

“Themajority of our kids don’t (own horses). They just love horses and want to be around them,” said leader Christi Scott when describing the Rough Riders 4-H Club, which meets on the second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at WaterGap Stables in Christiana.

The club, which is currently

seeking new members, is led by Christi and her mother, Judi Scott. The program is open to 4-H Club members ages 8 to 18, as well as those in Cloverbuds, a 4-H program for children ages 5 to 8.

Participants do not ride horses or receive riding lessons during club meetings, but they do learn how to groom and care for them. Horserelated crafts and other activities are also featured, along with guest speakers.

Each meeting begins with the reciting of the 4-H Pledge followed by the program. “We go over the parts of the horse and the (equipment) like saddles and bridles. Sometimes we do games with the horses,” said Judi, noting that club members recently painted horseshoes and made dreamcatchers out of them.

Club members are also learning grooming and showmanship. “We teach them how to braid and clean the horses

really well,” said Judi. “They learn how to lead the horses safety and how (to make) the horses look their best.”

Field trips are also offered, such as one the group took last year to Gettysburg National Park, where they had an opportunity to go horseback riding.

Judi said that the club has been meeting at the family farm for more than 30 years. “We started out with Chester County Penn State, but we joined the Cecil County, Maryland, 4-H (program),” she noted.

Those interested in joining the club may attend a meeting. The next scheduled event will be on Monday, June 12. Club members are asked to pay a membership fee to join 4-H. “They can decide if they want to join, and we will give them information to sign up through the 4-H website,” Judi explained.

Christi said that the horses used in the 4-H Club are the same horses that the family uses to give riding lessons at the farm. The farm also offers equine therapy.

WaterGap Stables is located at 325 Noble Road, Christiana. Those who would like more information about the club may call 610-593-2000 or join the Facebook group “ROUGH RIDERS 4-H WaterGap Stables.”

For the past several years, the event has been held in the fall, but organizers decided to move the celebration to spring/early summer to coincide with the kickoff of the library’s Summer Reading Program.

“The event was (set for) Oct. 1, and then we got Hurricane Ian. It was actually the wind that shut us down, not the rain,” noted Erin Metzler, a member of the organizing committee. “We are basically doing what we had planned last year.”

The event, which is open to people of all ages, is an annual celebration of a wizard-themed fantasy book series. Featured will be live entertainment, children’s activities and shopping. Attendees are encouraged to dress in costume. There is no admission fee, and most of the activities are free.

Upon arrival, attendees will receive a program detailing the events. “There is a formal entrance, which will mean something to the fans (of the literature series),” said Metzler. “The librarians will have a stand where they will hand out the programs and little gift bags to the kids.”

Beulah Baptist Church to celebrate 200th anniversary

Beulah Baptist Church in Russellville will celebrate its 200th anniversary on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4.

The weekend will begin with an outdoor gathering on June 3 at 3 p.m. “We are having a church family and alumni reunion and get-together on the church grounds. We will have a catered meal and activities for kids, including bounce houses,” said Richard Farmer, a member of the Beulah Anniversary Committee.

The public is encouraged to attend a special worship service that will take

place on June 4 at 10 a.m. Guest attendees will include pastor emeritus Roger Hunter, who was pastor at Beulah for nearly 25 years.

“We are going to have (alumnus) Philip Graybeal give a testimony and remembrance. I will be dressed up in an 1823 outfit and talk about what was going on nationwide in 1823 and talk about the beginnings and origin of the church,” said Farmer.

There will be special music during the Sunday service, and the message will be delivered by current pastor Ed Arnold. “He grew up in the church and was mentored very well by Pastor Hunter,” noted Farmer.

After graduating from Lancaster Bible College in 2007, Arnold became Beulah’s assistant pastor and then lead pastor in January 2021. Other staff members at the church include Mark Freisleben, pastor of student ministries, and Noah Phenninger, music and worship pastor.

According to a history of the church, a group of Christians from Hephzibah Baptist Church in East Fallowfield belived there was a need for a Baptist church in the southern end of Chester County. In June of 1823 they established what is now Beulah Baptist Church. “They met somewhere in the village of Russellville, although the exact location is not known,” noted Farmer.

In 1832, a meeting was held under an oak tree on a property along Route 896 north of Russellville to discuss where to build a permanent church building. The group bought the site where Beulah Baptist Church now stands for $27.75.

Over the subsequent 200 years, the church has undergone modifications and additions. “The right section (of the building) is the main sanctuary,” Farmer stated. “The center section was the original church … built in the early 1830s; it is now our vestibule/social area.” The left portion of the church houses classrooms, and additional classrooms and a fellowship hall are located downstairs. The front portico with the steeple is the church’s most recent addition, constructed in the late 1980s.

Farmer pointed out that church members come from the northern Maryland, Cochranville, Nottingham, Oxford and southern Lancaster County areas. Each congregation member will receive a 200th anniversary booklet on June 4. Additional copies will be available to purchase.

“On May 7, we dug up a time capsule that was buried at the 150th anniversary in 1973,” Farmer added. “There was a VHS tape (of church photos and activities), which we converted into modern media, and a Sunday paper from 1973. We are planning on burying another time capsule later this summer or early fall, so we can collect things from this celebration.”

The GPS address for Beulah Baptist Church is 3815 Newark Road, Oxford. For more information, call 610-932-9595 or visit www.bbcoxford.com or www.facebook.com/beulah.b. church.

(WAA) announced the 2023 Youth Service Project as part of its year-round TEACH program. The project will tie into the national nonprofit’s 2023 theme, “Serve and Succeed.”

New book on Lafayette released

Members of the Lafayette Bicentennial Brandywine Committee collaborated with the American Friends of Lafayette to produce a book titled “Lafayette: America’s Young Hero & Guest.”

In 1777, 19-year-old Lafayette defied his king and left his family behind in France to come to America to fight for independence and freedom. He was injured during the Battle of Brandywine on Sept. 11, 1777. Brandywine marked the beginning of Lafayette’s becoming an American hero.

Lafayette became a trusted member of Gen. George Washington’s staff. America was able to defeat the British with assistance from France, which provided crucial supplies and troops at Lafayette’s urging.

The American Friends of Lafayette, a national organization, is re-creating Lafayette’s tour of America. The organization established a Bicentennial Committee to commemorate the Farewell Tour of Lafayette.

The Lafayette Bicentennial Brandywine Committee is organizing celebrations in Chadds Ford, West Chester, and Delaware County. Lafayette had a grand dinner in Chester on Oct. 5, 1824. His visits to Chadds Ford and West Chester took place on July 26, 1825. The modern celebrations will take place exactly 200 years after Lafayette’s visits.

Military license plates available

New military themed license plates will be available throughout Pennsylvania. Recently passed legislation allows the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to offer license plates honoring military members and their families. Two of these new plates - the Air Medal license plate and the Afghanistan and Iraq veterans license plate - recognize veterans’ special contributions during their service.

Applicants for the Air Medal license plate must submit a completed Form MV150, “Application for U.S. Military Service License plate,” and a legible photocopy of their Form DD214, “Separation Papers or Dis-

charge Papers,” to show that they are recipients of the medal. The license plate contains the standard Pennsylvania license plate colors of blue, white, and gold and depicts an image of the Air Medal.

Applicants for the Afghanistan and Iraq veterans license plate must submit a completed Form MV-150V, “Application for U.S. Military Veteran License plate,” and a legible photocopy of their Form DD214, “Separation Papers or Discharge Papers.” Only veterans who served in both theaters of operation are eligible for these license plates. The license plate contains the standard Pennsylvania license plate colors of

blue, white, and gold and depicts images of both the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Operation Iraqi Freedom Medal.

A third license plate design authorized by the legislation is the Blue Star Family license plate. Applications for this license plate must be submitted on Form MV-920, “Application for Blue Star Family Plate,” and certify that the applicant is a family member of an active-duty, Reserve, or National Guard service member. Family members include spouses, parents, step-parents, adoptive parents, foster parents in loco parentis, children, stepchildren, adopted children, brothers, sisters, half-

brothers or half-sisters, and grandparents. The license plate contains the standard Pennsylvania license plate colors of blue, white, and gold and depicts an image of the Blue Star Family flag, which has a red border around a white background with a blue star in the center.

All three plates are available for a fee for passenger cars or trucks with a registered gross weight of not more than 14,000 pounds.

More information, including eligibility requirements and images of the license plates, is available by visiting www.dmv.pa.gov and looking under Vehicle Services for Registration Plates and then Military.

Throughout the year, the WAA TEACH program provides educational opportunities for people nationwide to engage with veterans in their communities. In 2022, WAA launched a kindergarten through 12th-grade curriculum that is aligned with the

National Council on Social Studies and state Common Core standards. The free, downloadable lesson plans aim to ensure stories of service, sacrifice, and valor are passed down to future generations while building good character and self-worth through service to others. WAA also launched

Veterans warned of benefits scams

Pennsylvania veterans and their advocates should be aware of scammers looking to poach their military pensions, warns the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA). Pension poaching is financial exploitation often targeting veterans age 65 or older or veterans who are disabled and may be receiving monthly pension payments from the DMVA and/or the U.S.

Department of

Affairs (VA).

Veterans

Veteran pension poaching occurs when scammers, unscrupulous players, or dishonest financial planners charge veterans or their advocates for assistance in applying for or submitting applications for military pensions. The scheme often involves financial maneuvers such as advising claimants to hide their assets in trusts or annuity products sometimes resulting in lost investments and lucrative fees paid to the adviser.

Veterans and advocates should be especially vigilant now about PACT Act-related scams. The new PACT Act law expands VA health care and benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances.

Veterans and advocates can protect against PACT Act scams in several ways. Veterans should not provide per-

sonal, medical, financial, or VA benefit information online or over the phone. Federal agencies will not contact veterans unless they make a request. Veterans should not click on online ads or engage with social media that seems suspicious. Veterans should look for https:// at the start of website addresses, which means they are more likely to be legitimate. Veterans should also enable multi-factor authentication on all accounts, if possible. Veterans should never share their VA login information or deposit VA benefits directly into a third-party bank account unless the person is court appointed or a VA fiduciary. Veterans should also work with veterans service providers they already know. Any suspected fraud should be reported to www.ftc.gov.

Veterans or their advocates should never pay for U.S. Department of Veterans

its first Youth Service Project in 2022, when students participated in an oral history project that involved interviewing veterans.

To learn more about the TEACH program and participate in the service project, visit www.wreathsacross america.org/teach.

Affairs and/or PA DMVA forms, pension application fees, restructuring assets in order to “qualify,” the promise of eligibility for a pension, or a lump sum payment on a pension.

There are approximately 200 veteran service officers in Pennsylvania who work within organizations such as the DMVA, county Veterans Affairs offices, and several veterans service organizations. To learn more about the DMVA and for contact information for county directors of Veterans Affairs and veteran service officers, visit www.dmva.pa.gov.

Veterans who have experienced or suspect a pension scam should contact 717-7831944 or PAvets@attorneygen eral.gov or submit a complaint online at www.attor neygeneral.gov. Also, report any VA-related scam to the VA benefits hotline at 800827-1000.

Summer Hymn Sing series posted

The Summer Hymn Sing series will begin with an event on Sunday, June 4, at 7 p.m. The series will be held at the historic Old Leacock Presbyterian Church, located on Route 340, 1 mile west of Intercourse.

Participants will choose their favorite hymns for all to

sing using the “Glory to God” hymnal and the traditional “Crowning Glory” hymnal. The 1904 Estes pump organ will be used to accompany the opening hymns.

The public is invited to attend. The series will continue on Sundays, July 2, Aug. 6, and Sept. 3.

Motorcycle safety courses posted

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) reminds residents that free Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program (PAMSP) training opportunities are available to motorcycle riders across the state. Prospective, experienced, and new riders who have a motorcycle learner’s permit or motorcycle license can develop and refresh operator proficiency through the trainings.

PennDOT’s third-party training providers offer many classes. A full list of providers and their locations can be found by visiting www.dmv.pa.gov and looking under Driver Services for Motorcyclists and then Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program.

Successful completion of a basic or intermediate course waives the requirement to take a skills test at a Pen-

nDOT Driver License Center for those over age 18 and automatically earns the permit holder a motorcycle license. Motorcycle permit holders who complete a three-wheel basic course will earn a motorcycle license with a restriction prohibiting the operation of a two-wheel motorcycle.

Classes can be scheduled at locations throughout Pennsylvania, and class schedules are coordinated by each thirdparty training provider at each location. Individuals interested in training should contact the training providers directly or check their websites for class availability, as additional courses may be offered, and providers may offer additional walk-in or waitlist opportunities.

Metzler explained that the term Di-Atglen Alley is a spoof of Diagon Alley, a wizarding shopping district in London from the popular book series. “Just like last year, we will close down Main Street in front of the library, and borough hall will be closed. We call that Di-Atglen Alley, our shopping district,” she said.

One of the highlights of the day will be the Wizard Academy. “Children will be able to make slime in the potions class, and in the transfiguration class, they will hatch ‘dragon eggs,’” said Metzler.

In Di-Atglen Alley, shoppers will find vendors selling wands and other handcrafted, wizard-themed merchandise, as well as butterbeer, which is made from brown sugar, butter syrup and cream soda. There will also be face painting.

Also located in Di-Atglen Alley will be the stage where visitors can watch a live owl show with Dawn White and a magic show with Professor Snark.

A costume contest will be

offered for people of all ages at 1:30 p.m. There is no fee to participate, and prizes will be awarded.

There will be two different scavenger hunts - the traditional Sorcerer’s Scavenger Scramble and a more challenging game, the Cursed Object Quest.

Metzler pointed out that the event is open to all people, not just those who are familiar with the literature series, noting that the only book-specific event will be Quizzo, where participants will be asked to answer trivia questions about the books.

“It would be fun for people even if they are not fans,” she stated. “At the Wizard Academy - what kid doesn’t want to make slime or excavate a dragon egg? You don’t need to know about the (books) to enjoy the owl show or the magic show.”

instruction and practical riding, provides training for new riders and gives experienced riders the opportunity to polish their skills and correct any unsafe riding habits they may have developed. Students are responsible for providing all protective gear. Act 84 of 2012 established the requirement that all permit holders under age 18 must successfully complete the BRC to receive a motorcycle license.

The eight-hour Intermediate Riding Course allows skilled riders to refresh their

safety knowledge and hone their on-road skills. Students taking this clinic must provide their own motorcycle and protective gear and provide proof of insurance, current registration, and inspection for their motorcycle.

During the 3-Wheel Riding Course, riders learn the same skills and safety strategies taught in the BRC, except on a three-wheeled motorcycle. The clinic consists of classroom instruction and riding exercises. The majority of students must provide their own

motorcycle and all of their own protective gear and provide proof of insurance, current registration, and inspection for their motorcycle. However, select locations offering the course have threewheeled motorcycles on hand for student use. Individuals should check with the location before signing up for a course.

The Advanced Riding Course, a one-day clinic for experienced riders who want to enhance their safety skills through attitude and awareness, rounds out the PAMSP

Strategies to foster reading

Many adults feel there is no better way to relax than curling up with a good book. Although

a relaxing afternoon of reading may appeal to adults, some kids are more reluctant to

crack open a book.

Children have much to gain from reading and being read to. According to the Children’s Bureau of Southern California, a nonprofit organization devoted to strengthening vulnerable children, their families and the communities where they live, reading aloud to children supports their cognitive development, improves their language skills, prepares them for academic success, increases their discipline and ability to concentrate, and improves their imagination and creativity.

Parents can try several strategies to encourage kids to read more.

offerings. The clinic is designed to enhance a rider’s ability to avoid a crash by honing his or her decision-making abilities, riding strategies, risk management, and rider behavior and choices. Students taking this clinic must provide their own motorcycle and protective gear and provide proof of insurance, current registration, and inspection for their motorcycle.

Classes and locations will continue to be added throughout the riding season. Registration for the 2023 training season is ongoing.

Parents of young readers or children learning to read undoubtedly know that children like to read the same book over and over again. Although that might not engage moms and dads, experts note that allowing kids to read the same books multiple times is an effective way to foster a love of reading in children. Kids are more likely to enjoy reading if they recognize more words and can better understand the stories, so parents can encourage kids to re-read books.

When the family is traveling by car, children may often watch movies on an electronic

You are invited to explore 55 activities throughout the region, including things to do, see and eat. Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) has created a unique bucket list to highlight activities and places in America’s 55th National Heritage Area.

“In March 2019, York and Lancaster counties were officially designated the nation’s 55th National Heritage Area,” explained Megan Salvatore, visitor service representative for SNHA. “National Heritage Areas are places where historical, cultural and natural resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important

landscape. It’s obvious why some places are designated as national parks, but National Heritage Areas are more complex. Our bucket list showcases some of the reasons why these two counties have been

nationally designated.”

Among the activities on the list are learning about the power of wind turbines at the Turkey Hill Trail Overlook, exploring the Railroad Museum

of Pennsylvania, learning about early science and medicine at Haldeman Mansion, checking out some of the oldest farmers markets in the country and searching for a whimsical gnome garden in Akron.

As Salvatore explained, the SNHA bucket list runs throughout the year. It includes seasonal activities and events, as well as year-round activities to explore. “Participants can share their bucket list experience by snapping photos, posting them to social media and tagging @susqNHA in the post,” she noted. If participants complete at least five items and submit their information on the SNHA website, they can receive an SNHA sticker.

SNHA started the bucket list idea to keep people in the region busy during the pandemic in 2020. The list focused specifically on Columbia that year and then branched out to include the river towns of Marietta and Wrightsville the following year. Last year was the first time the organization launched a bucket list covering the entire region. Salvatore came up with the tasks on the

list, noting that they are engineered to explore partners and sites offering a diverse mix of heritage, culture, recreation and refreshments unique to the region. A collaborative effort with the SNHA staff narrowed down the final 55 activities, she said, noting that number was chosen because the region is the 55th designated National Heritage Area.

“I would encourage residents to rediscover and learn new things about the region, using the Susquehanna National Heritage Area bucket list,” Salvatore remarked. “The bucket list tasks open conversations about our collective past and create fun talking points with visitors to the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and Zimmerman Center for Heritage. It’s an interesting way for visitors to understand the national connections this region has woven throughout history.”

A digital version of the list can be found at www.susq nha.org. Paper copies are also available at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, and the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.
