Children of all ages are invited to register for the Summer Reading Program, which will run from Monday, June 13, through Monday, Aug. 15, by picking up a reading packet at the library.
“We plan to hand out pocket folders the first week of June,” said Tom Knecht, library director. “Each folder will have a sheet to document reading progress, coloring pages, puzzles and activity sheets. A small weekly prize will be given out when the child returns with their progress sheet. At the end of the program, we will have an ice cream party in the pavilion at the park.”
The Summer Reading Program will also feature weekly activities, including four talks presented by Chester County Park Rangers. All ranger-led programs will begin at 2 p.m. and will take place in the Minch Park pavilion, which is located next to the library.
The first talk will take place on Wednesday, June 1. The program will be “Pennsylvania Mammals.” “Introduction to Disc Golf” will be presented on Wednesday, June 22.
A “Natural Critters Craft” will be offered on Wednesday, July 27, during which children will make crafty creatures using materials found in nature. The final ranger-led program will be “Building a Natural Bird Feeder” on Wednesday, Aug. 24. Attendees will learn how to build a bird feeder using pinecones and peanut butter.
A four-week Science Exploration Program will be offered on select Tuesdays in July and August. Each program will meet at the Minch Park pavilion from 10 to 11 a.m.
The theme on July 12 will be “Keeping Our Environment Clean.” During the program, children will play a recycling game and create posters.
The theme on July 19 will be “Water, Water, Everywhere.” Children will take part in an interactive story, where they will observe and experience the impacts of water quality.
The theme on Aug. 2 will be “Saving the Soil.” Youths will meet live composting worms as they learn about soil, and they will conduct several activities to visualize the impacts of erosion.
On Aug. 9, the theme will be “Conserving Water: You Can Help!” Children will learn how to help conserve water at home, at school and in their communities. Featured will be water activities and experiments.
In addition, Parkesburg Library Nights at the Lancaster Barnstormers will be held on Saturday, June 4, and on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the library. A link to purchase tickets is also available by searching for “Parkesburg Free Library” on Facebook.
For more information about any of the activities, visit the aforementioned Facebook page, call 610857-5165, visit www.parkes burglibrary.org or email tknecht@ccls.org.
