Fun in the sun at Beltzville State Park Beach, Lehighton, Carbon County
BY WENDY ROYAL
Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state.
Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to midSeptember. Many of these beaches have a swim-at-your-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road.
You’ll find links to all the state park beaches on www.townlively.com/ summer-vibes-at-pa-beache es. • Bald Eagle State Park, Howard • Black Moshannon State Park,

Budgeting Workshop Planned
A budgeting workshop will be presented by financial coach Grace Lantz on Tuesday, July 13, at 7 p.m. at Twin Brook Retreat, 5697 Strasburg Road, Gap. Lantz has always been interested in budgeting and personal finance, and she recently opened Family Financial Coaching in order to use this interest to help others.
At the workshop, Lantz will share how budgeting and managing one’s money wisely can help a person better serve his or her family and community. Topics will include how to set up a budget, budgeting categories, methods of tracking spending on paper or electronically, how couples can communicate better when making a budget together, and how to use a budget to pay off debt and save for the future.
The event is for singles and couples alike. Although Lantz will present a faith-based perspective, the event is open to anyone, regardless of religious beliefs. There will be a question-and-answer time, and budgeting worksheets will be provided. Water and coffee will be available, and Lantz will give away a free coaching session.
The event is free. Optional reservations may be made on the “Family Financial Coaching” page on Facebook; questions may also be directed to this account. More information is available at www.family financialcoaching.org.

Angel, who is about 8 months old, was found in a window well as a feral older kitten. She is affectionate and sweet and would do best in a quiet home where she can get to know someone in her own time. Once she feels safe and loved, she becomes a lap cat. Giant Expands Flashfood App Availability
The Giant Company recently announced that it is rolling out the Flashfood app to all Giant and Martin’s stores following a successful pilot. Designed to reduce food waste and help customers save money on fresh food items nearing their bestbefore date, the Flashfood partnership has helped the Giant Company divert more than 250,000 pounds of food waste from landfills.
The Flashfood app allows shoppers to purchase fresh food, including produce, meat, deli and bakery products that are nearing their best-before date at significantly reduced prices. First introduced in May at four Giant stores in Lancaster, Flashfood is currently available at more than 30 stores.
The rollout will place Flashfood at 170 participating Giant and Martin’s stores by fall. The chainwide rollout of Flashfood begins with stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, with additional stores joining each month.
By downloading the Flashfood app, which is free on iOS and Android, shoppers can browse deals on fresh items that are nearing their best-before dates. Purchases are then made directly through the app and shoppers pick up their order the same day from the Flashfood zone located inside the participating Giant or Martin’s store.
In addition to the Flashfood app, Giant also has recycling and donation programs in place. Last year alone, through Giant’s Meat the Needs program and in partnership with Feeding America, more than five million pounds of safe, consumable fresh food that would have otherwise gone unsold was frozen and donated to regional food bank partners.
