Riding for a cause

Event to benefit Pennsylvania veterans

The Chester County chapter of the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education

(A.B.A.T.E.) organization will hold its annual bike ride to benefit Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors on Saturday, Aug. 17, beginning and ending at the Parkesburg VFW, 406 W. Fourth Ave., Parkesburg.

Registration will be held from 8 to 8:45 a.m., and the ride will begin at 9 a.m. Participants will be asked to pay a registration donation, which will include lunch after the ride.

Coffee and doughnuts will be provided by the Parkesburg Wawa at the beginning of the ride. “We will travel from VFW Post 4480 in Parkesburg to Post 5892 in Hockessin, Del.,” explained chapter chaplain and event chair Jeff Smack, noting that coffee and fresh baked goods will also be available at the Delaware location. “From there, the group goes to Kennett Square VFW Post 5467,

and then we will we weave our way back to Parkesburg, so it’s a big circle.”

The ride has been held for at least 10 years, according to event organizers. “We average between 50 and 100 motorcycles,” noted chapter coordinator and president Stephen Sinson. He emphasized

“When you see bikes out in a big group, it’s usually for a cause.”

that the ride benefits Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors, an organization that is not affiliated with the Wounded Warrior Project. “This ride is for PA Wounded Warriors. It is all nonprofit, and 96% of the funds that they raise go directly to wounded veterans. They help with medical bills, rent and utility bills,” he said.

More information about the organization is available at www.pawoundedwarriors.org.

Sinson noted that every effort is made to keep the riders safe during the event. “Most of the time we stick to smaller roads to avoid traffic,” he stated. “The municipalities help us out. They will block major intersections or us.”

Following the ride, the group will enjoy a catered lunch by A&J’s Twisted Kitchen.

The Chester County Chapter of A.B.A.T.E. is a nonprofit organization of bikers that has been working to protect motorcyclists’ rights in Pennsylvania since 1983. “Our biggest goal is to promote safety, and we also do a lot with the community,” Sinson said. “We have other rides that we do. We have a drug awareness ride to benefit Kacie’s Cause and we have a food run every year for Oxford (Area Neighborhood Services Center).”

The chapter has about 125 members, but it is not necessary to own a motorcycle to join. “We have people who come and participate and help,” said Sinson.

Calvary schedules Great Giveaway

For more than two decades, Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) has invited area residents to its Great Giveaway. This year, lead pastor Chris Lenhart emphasized that, along with clothing, household items, and backpacks, the church will offer prayer. “If people have things going on that they would like someone to pray with them about, (prayer) is available here,”

To help youngsters prepare for kindergarten this fall, Our Lady of Consolation Early Learning Center (OLC-ELC), located at the Schneider Parish Center, 2995 Cemetery Road, Parkesburg, will offer a Kindergarten Jumpstart Camp. Camp will take place from Monday, Aug. 19, through Friday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A half-day

option is also available.

The first-time camp is being led by teachers Shelly Carr and Janice Dagney; Dagney is the parish’s director of religious education. “We are both certified teachers, and we have been both teaching for 20-plus years,” noted Dagney.

A fee will be charged per child to attend camp, which is designed to simulate a typical week of kindergarten. “We will

explained Lenhart. “Or they can put a prayer request on a card, and we will commit to praying for them throughout the fall. We’re faithful to pray for every one of those requests.”

This year’s giveaway, which will feature free clothing, household items,

books, toys, and more, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 8 a.m. to noon inside the church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise. CMBC is located at the corner of Mine and South Kinzer roads.

Since its inception, the Great Giveaway has featured clothing and shoes sorted by size and gender, kitchen items and housewares, toys, books, purses, and accessories. New and gently used items are donated by church attendees and members of the surrounding community. The church will continue to accept donations until noon on Friday, Aug. 9. Any items that are left after the event ends will be donated to area organizations, such as Goodwill.

Amanda Vargas, executive assistant at CMBC, said that she starts planning for the giveaway in April. The event took a hiatus in 2020, but since it returned in 2021, there has been a special effort to include backpacks filled with school supplies. “People from our church donate school supplies, and we just hand (the backpacks) out,” said Vargas, who noted that about 30 backpacks will be available to give to any student who comes to the event.

Sunday of the month at noon at the Parkesburg VFW. Guests are welcome to attend. “We have a close group. Our meetings average between 20 to 45 people. We vote on things and discuss things,” said Sinson.

During the upcoming ride, chapter officers will

lead the pack of bikes. “Everyone fans out behind us,” Sinson said. “When you see bikes out in a big group, it’s usually for a cause. We really do have a good time.”

Feeding the family on the farm

Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township

As canning and freezing season moves into high gear, an excerpt of Faye Mummau’s memoir recalls a girl’s life on the farm in the late 1930s, early 1940s.

“It took a lot of food to feed our family. Mother planted a large garden in the spring. Along with the regular vegetables, she grew horseradish and turnips because Dad liked them.

“Breakfast in winter was often mush and puddings. The mush came from corn Dad took to the mill to be crushed. Puddings were made from the pigs Dad butchered. Most of the meat had been canned to preserve it because we did not have a freezer in the early days. We rented a freezer locker at the market in Gap to store what food

had to be frozen. One year Dad promised Mother he would buy her a freezer if the steers brought a certain figure at market. The steers sold and Mother got her freezer.

“Mother was very organized. When it came time to harvest peas, she picked the peas and made piles for each of us to shell according to our age. We had to finish our pile before we could swim in the creek. One day I hurried and finished first, jumped into my suit and hurried to the creek. But it was boring being there by myself. Another lesson learned: it was a lot more fun if we helped each other and then swam as a group.

“When cherry picking time came, Dad helped pick and seed. I have a picture of Dad falling asleep while he was seeding cherries. Mother canned both sour cherries for pies and sweet

do what local kindergarten classes do so (children) are confident knowing what is expected,” said Dagney. “We will do centers, circle time and have some (indoor and outdoor) cooperative play.”

Children will be asked to bring their own lunches; snacks will be provided. Before- and after-camp care will be available for an additional fee.

Dagney said the camp may help children who have fears about entering a formal edu-

cation program for the first time. “There will be a lot of nerves, and hopefully this will eliminate or alleviate some of that,” she stated.

To register or for more details about the camp, contact Dagney at jdagney@ olcchurch.org or 610-8570511. Class size is limited.

Dagney is also one of the event organizers of the annual OLC-ELC craft fair. This year’s event, now in its 38th year, will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9,

cherries as well as about 100 quarts of peaches and 300 quarts of applesauce. We also canned pears when there was a good harvest. Fruit was our main dessert at mealtime.

“One of my chores was peeling a large crock of potatoes for supper the next day before I went to bed. Another job was packing the school lunches, (which consisted of) rows of bread slices slathered with butter, (with) homemade bologna added before they were closed and packed.

Into each bag also went an apple and some cookies. With four brothers each taking two sandwiches plus what we girls ate, I soon tired of packing lunches. I remember complaining of ‘having to work all day.’

Mother told me I could have the whole day off, she would do my chores. I was to come indoors only for

meals. I knew Mother had a bad heart and worried all day that she was doing too much and something would happen to her. That cured me of complaining of too much work.

“Household chores were also designated: cleaning, lawn mowing, weeding the garden, food preparation for the girls and barn chores for the boys. Mealtime chores rotated. One cleared the table, another washed the dishes, the third dried them, the fourth swept the floor. In the summer, we liked to play baseball and sometimes we went out to play while the dishes were still on the table. Mother had a rule about that, too. If that night’s dish washer was ready to wash dishes before the table was cleared, they only had to wash the ones used to prepare the food. The person who cleared the table had to do the rest.”

from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Schneider Parish Center. In addition to crafts sold by more than 40 vendors on two floors, the event will feature homemade food, a visit by Santa Claus, face painting, a chance to win themed gift baskets and door prizes donated by the craft vendors.

Registration is currently open for vendors and crafters to participate. Those interested in setting up a booth at the fair may contact

Dagney for more details. More information about the kindergarten camp and the craft fair can be found at www.facebook.com/ olcchurch/events.

Humane Pennsylvania president and CEO celebrates 20 years

What started out as a part-time job at the Chester County SPCA (now the Brandywine Valley SPCA) has turned into a career in animal welfare for Karel Minor, president and CEO of Humane Pennsylvania (PA), who recently celebrated his 20th year with the organization.

Minor, who was honored in July with a celebratory luncheon and presented with a 20-year service pin, joined the Humane Society of Berks County in 2004. In 2014, he led the merger of the Humane Society of Berks County and the Humane League of Lancaster County to form Humane PA.

Minor is a graduate of West Chester University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in earth and space science. During his 30-plus year career, Minor has served in various positions including operations, education, fundraising and development.

“I was finishing my degree, and my wife suggested that I could fill in my schedule with a part-time job,” explained Minor. “I was a part-time adoption counselor at the Chester County SPCA, then stepped into community educator and then operations manager, and that became a full-time job. I then picked up development and fundraising positions, and that became a permanent job.”

“I wasn’t expecting it to be career, and I am still in it,” he added, noting that his family currently has four cats, a baby turtle and three Costa Rican dart frogs. The family recently lost its senior dog, Treetop, a Labrador retriever.

Today, Minor is responsible for the overall operations of Humane PA, which includes the Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving, 1801 N. 11th St., Reading; the Humane Pennsylvania Lancaster Campus, 2195 Lincoln Highway East; the Humane Veterinary Hospital, 1729 N. 11th St., Reading; the Giorgi Family Community Resource Center, 1350 Schuylkill Ave., Reading, which offers a pet food

pantry, vaccines and microchip clinic; and the Danielle Ruiz-Murphy Dog Park, 503 S. Center Road (Route 82), Birdsboro.

“I hire senior-level staff, and I am involved in the process from top to bottom - budgeting, developing programs, how things run and where we should be going in the future,” Minor stated. “I do everything and more.”

Although his primary office is in Reading, Minor visits the various Humane PA facilities during the week, including the Lancaster campus, which recently opened a new Cat & Critter Adoption Center.

Minor said that he is proud of what he and his

team have been able to accomplish through the years, such as no-fee adoption events, the establishment of a pet food pantry and the creation of a nonprofit full-service veterinary practice.

“The first thing was … fee-waived adoptions. We did it as a test drive in 2004. We only did it for animals which were set for imminent euthanasia,” Minor said, noting that the first year, 200 animals were adopted through the program. “We opened it widely to all animals, and it was so successful it won a national award

as ‘Best Industry Practice.’”

The other two programs that were developed under Minor’s leadership are the pet food pantry and the nonprofit veterinary practice. “We started with new

A bug’s goals

On July 8, Ryan Bridge, better known as Ryan the Bug Man, visited the Perella Schoolhouse at the Intercourse Library to present “Let’s Take an Insect Adventure!” Ryan’s goal is to change attitudes toward insects with scientific facts about “the most numerous living things on the planet.”

“Everybody likes bugs; they just don’t know it yet,” Ryan told the gathering of more than 20. “At 5 or 6 years old, we like bugs, but most adults don’t like bugs and insects.”

Ryan’s promotional program for insects aims to slice away at the myths associated with the tiny creatures. “We’re told about the horrible things that are supposed to happen (when we get near bugs), but we are not being taught the right things,” he said. Ryan noted that he battles bad bug press with education.

“You’ve heard that if you see a bee, you should be afraid because it might sting you,” Ryan explained. “Well, if you grab a bee off a flower and hold it in your hand, it might sting you. But if you leave the bee alone and step back and watch the bee, nothing will happen.” Ryan further explained that insects are not thinking about us. “Bugs and insects don’t know you exist,” he noted. “They know two things - they know food and they know threat.”

According to Ryan, giving insects human characteristics endows them with emotions they are simply not capable of exhibiting. “There’s no such thing as an angry bee or a happy butterfly,” he pointed out. “Bugs and insects don’t know what happy is.” He added that there are not good bugs or bad bugs, and to demonstrate his theories, he handled a number of insects and arachnids,

including a tarantula, scorpions, and cockroaches. According to Ryan, bugs have only a few simple goals. “Bugs look for food and water and to stay alive one more day,” he said.

Quizzing the gathering, Ryan asked questions about the number of legs an insect has - six; the number of legs a spider, which is an arachnid, has - eight; and the number of body parts an insect hasthree - a head, thorax, and abdomen. “What do insects do with their antennae?” asked Ryan, who noted that bugs smell with their antennae and taste with their feet. “Everything about an insect is about staying alive,” he pointed out.

Color and camouflage are important in helping insects stay alive. Ryan displayed a case of butterflies in violet, blue, and iridescent green, explaining that females of many species are attracted to this color and that all the butterflies in the case were male. He also showed a case of moths and pointed out the markings that resemble eyes to deter predators. Ryan shared that

Ryan the Bug Man demonstrates how scorpions glow under ultraviolet light at a presentation he gave at the Intercourse Library.

scorpions have a special and little-known feature that helps insect enthusiasts to catch them. “I like to hunt scorpions,” he noted, adding that the activity is best done at night. “I use ultraviolet light (because) true scorpions glow under ultraviolet light.” Ryan demonstrated by turning off the lights and shining a light on a scorpion in his hand. “There’s nothing cooler than running around in the woods making scorpions glow,” he said. First, parents should get their children involved. Have children make a list of their favorite foods from each food group - starch, protein, vegetable, fruit, and dairy - and get them excited by

bringing them to the store to shop for their favorites. Together, parents and children can build a balanced lunch, making sure children have one item from each of the five food groups. Ideas for a balanced lunchbox include English muffins, sliced ham, carrots, strawberries, a cheese stick, wheat crackers, hummus, sugar

snap peas, clementines and nonfat Greek yogurt.

Second, lunches should contain protein. Protein helps keep stomachs full and minds focused. When thinking about breakfast, lunch and snacks, include quick and easy foods like lunch meat, cheese, nut butters, Greek yogurt or hard-boiled eggs.

The third tip is to get colorful. Colorful fruits and vegetables provide a variety of nutrients. Entice kids with daily color challenges to encourage produce variety. For example, Monday’s lunch can focus on red foods, Tuesday’s meal can feature orange foods, and so on.

Fourth, parents should stock convenience items. Be prepared with pre-sliced apple packs, granola bars, applesauce pouches and trail mixes available for grab-and-go after-school

snacks, and load up on frozen waffles and pancakes, fruit cups, oatmeal pouches and drinkable yogurts for easy breakfasts.

The fifth tip is to make dinner easy. Balanced dinners do not have to be elaborate. Keep it simple on busy weeknights with tried-andtrue winners like breakfast for dinner or sandwiches with no-cook sides.

Giant’s dietitians also offer easy meal and snack ideas and recipes, simplified with five or fewer ingredients, at www.giantfood stores.com/pages/back-to -school-dietitian-picks.

YGBW hires López

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) has announced the addition of Verónica López as vice president of health strategies. López has nearly three decades of experience in nursing leadership, patient advocacy and community outreach.

López most recently served as the director of nursing at Community Volunteers in Medicine. Her experience encompasses various health care roles, including director of health equity at Reading Area Community College, Latina Community Health Services at Pennsylvania Hospital, and Greater Philadelphia Health Action Inc. She is dedicated to promoting patient-centered care and advancing health equity and accessibility for all.

The YGBW is currently

To build on current offerings such as LIVESTRONG at the Y, A Matter of Balance and Parkinson’s Cycle, the Y plans to seek certification as a medical fitness facility. It also plans to mobilize a Fit Truk across Chester County in the coming months. Fit Truks are fully equipped mobile gyms, designed to deliver health care and fitness opportunities directly to schools, organizations, community events, and more.

The expansion of the Y’s medical fitness services will be accelerated through strategic partnerships. Elite Physical Therapy recently launched services at the West Chester Area branch on Airport Road. things that were considered radical at the time, which are normal operations now,” said Minor. “I am proud that we as a team have done things that were true firsts in the industry.” The newest program being offered by Humane Pennsylvania in both Berks and Lancaster counties is Spike & Tilly’s Pet Resort, which offers pet boarding for animals, whether they are there for the day, overnight or for an extended time while their families are on vacation. Separate boarding accommodations are available for K-9 officers, pets with special needs and pets requiring emergency boarding through Humane PA’s PetNet program. “We recognized there is a need not only for affordable boarding but boarding that could handle dogs with special needs or police dogs. This will change that,” Minor said.

Finally, Minor announced that families are encouraged to adopt a new pet during Clear the Shelters Month, a nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign that helps find loving homes for animals in need. This year’s event will be celebrated from Saturday, Aug. 10, through Tuesday, Sept. 10.
