“Dog Days of Summer” will be the theme of the Final Friday program to be held on Aug. 31 from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Parkesburg. In addition to enjoying food, shopping and entertainment, visitors will be able to meet with representatives from local pet rescues, which will have pets on hand that are available for adoption. Final Friday is a street fair hosted by the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC) on the last Friday of each month from April through October. Activities take place along the 200 block of Main Street in Parkesburg.

Special guests at the August event will include Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, LaMancha Animal Rescue and the Animal House Project, which runs the Chester County Pet Food Pantry. “Each one (of the rescues) is bringing animals (available) for adoption,” said PAC member Jenny Alexander, who noted that “Dog Days of Summer” was also the Final Friday theme last August. “People can meet them and then go through the adoption process. They want to make sure they go to good home. “Last year there was a little beagle, and one of our vendors fell in love with the dog and a week later adopted her,” she added. See Final Friday pg 4

The Chester County 4-H Dairy Goat Show was held on Aug. 6 at the Romano 4-H Center of Chester County in Honey Brook during the week of the 4-H Fair. A total of 41 goat projects were exhibited by 19 4-H youth participants. This year the show was divided into three classes - Alpine Dairy Goats, Oberhasli Dairy Goats and Pet Goats. A separate market goat show was held, and market goats were sold as part of the annual 4-H livestock auction on Aug. 8. Kyle Miller of Newport was in charge of placing the goats and instructing the 4H participants in how to improve their animals for show. In the Alpine breed, Frank Reith of West Grove captured the Grand Champion award for his 5-year-old doe, Reith Bros.

The Pet Goat division included 12 entries. Mermaid, a Boar-type pet goat owned by Ellie Harrop of Chester Springs, was the Grand Champion, and Oreo, an 11-year-old pygmy dwarf goat owned by Aaron Phillips of Elverson, was the Reserve Champion. Frank’s Grand Champion Alpine doe, Dixie, was selected for Best in Show honors. In the Fitting and Showing competition, Frank was both the Champion Showman and Champion Fitter for the senior division. Melissa Johnson was the top intermediate showman and fitter. Xavier Reith of West Grove was the top showman and fitter in the junior division. Gianna Emmons of Newtown Square was the top first-year showman and fitter. Another highlight of the day was watching five Cloverbud goat participants. The event was open to youths between the ages of 5 and 8, who had the opportunity to enter the show ring with their animals. They all went home with Cloverbud Achievement Ribbons. The Chester County 4-H Dairy Goat show was one of the many shows that took place during the Chester County 4-H Fair, held Aug. 6 to 11. 4-H is open to all youths ages 5 to 18. For more information about the 4-H program in Chester County, readers may contact the Penn State Extension office at 610696-3500.

County Community College Police Academy in 2013. When he is not working, Adams enjoys spending time with his family as well as playing golf. John grew up in Oxford, and after graduating from Oxford Area High School, he found a niche for his mechanical talents in the aerospace industry, where he built parts for private jets and helicopters. About five years, he became interested in changing gears. A close friend, former Chester County Deputy Sheriff Kevin Brough, urged John to consider law enforcement, especially the Sheriff’s Office. John graduated from the Delaware County Community College Police Academy in 2016 and began working for the Lincoln University Police

9/11 Stair Climb from pg 1 The eighth annual Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration for participants will open at 8 a.m., and the event will start at 9 a.m. with a time of calisthenics. Bagpiper Heidi Tywalk will play “Amazing Grace,” and East Petersburg Fire Company (EPFC) chaplain Bob Kauffman will give an invocation. Participants will begin climbing the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs at approximately 9:30 a.m. Moments of silence will be observed at the times the Twin Towers fell. The event will conclude in a new manner this year. The first 343 participants will receive a badge representing a firefighter who died in the World Trade Center collapse on Sept. 11, 2001. An additional group of people may receive badges representing police officers, as supplies are available. As individuals complete the climb, they may ring a bell and announce the name of the person whose badge they carry. Yuill explained that this new procedure is based on the method used in New York City to honor first responders who died in the line of duty. Prior to the introduction of two-way radios on fire trucks, a system of bells was used to communicate the location of fires. At firefighters’ funerals, 20 tones were rung in groups of five. The pattern of 5-5-5-5 will be sounded at the start of the 9/11 Stair Climb. The bell

used for the event previously hung on a fire engine used by the EPFC. The 9/11 Stair Climb is typically attended primarily by first responders, but anyone is welcome. “(This is) a chance for firefighters to remember, since we are involved with the same job they did,” Yuill said. “Whenever we go out on a call, we run the risk of not coming back.” There is a cost to participate in the 9/11 Stair Climb. Event T-shirts will be included in the registration fee for those who sign up by Friday, Aug. 24. After that date, folks may register at the event, but the availability of shirts will not be guaranteed. The silent auction of a framed poster featuring the badges of the 343 deceased firefighters will be held during the climb. The proceeds from the auction and the event registration fees will go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the counseling services unit of the New York Fire Department, which assists the survivors and bereaved families from 9/11. Last year, Lancaster’s event was ranked 13 out of 47 events in total amount raised. For more information or to register for the event, readers may visit www.lanc asterstairclimb.org. Anyone with questions and those who would like to volunteer to assist at the event may email Yuill at syuill@lancasterstairclimb.org.

day of hospice care for one patient costs $186. Auction bidders may “buy” one or more days of care. The art auction will offer original paintings from local artists as well as the debut of the 2018 Memorial Garden Ornament. Gardeners will love the plant auction, which will continue on Sept. 3 in order to accommodate the six truckloads of plants donated to the fundraiser. A high-end auction on Sept. 3 will focus on vacations, fine jewelry, handyman services, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and handcrafted items. Additional auctions that day will include sports items and quilts. The sports memorabilia auction will showcase items from regional, state, and national icons with guest auctioneer and SportsTalk host Eric May. The specialty quilt auction will offer handquilted pieces from Amish crafters, quilters’ groups, and volunteers, as well as gently used quilts in a wide range of sizes. There will also be opportunities to win a 2018 Ford Mustang Coupe and $2,000 or $1,000 Visa gift cards. Folks who are hungry during the Labor Day Auction are invited to join the Auction Club, which is designed for anyone who loves Amish-made food, enjoys access to an all-you-can-eat array of hot and cold sweets and savories, and wants to support medical, emotional, and spiritual end-of-life care and grief support. Folks may join the Auction Club for a set fee; membership offers access to all-you

-can-eat food on both days of the Labor Day Auction and acknowledgment of a donation in the auction program and Hospice Horizons magazine. To join the club or to view an auction schedule, readers may call 717-295-3900 or visit www.LaborDayAuction.org. Hospice & Community Care has been partnering with local businesses, individuals, the Amish community, and volunteers to grow this successful event over the past 34 years. All proceeds from the Labor Day Auction directly benefit patients and families receiving hospice and palliative care and bereavement support through the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss. The Chester County Sheriff’s Office recently welcomed three new deputies. Arthur B. Adams, Asim O. John, and Sean M. Marasco each took the oath during a swearing-in ceremony held in Courtroom One of the Chester County Justice Center. Adams, a native of Chester County, has been working for several years as a security officer, most recently at Lankenau Hospital. He also worked previously as a correctional officer at Chester County Prison. After graduating from Downingtown West High School, Adams decided that his longtime interest in helping others made law enforcement a logical career choice. Although his family has a strong history of military service, Adams was the first to pursue police work. He received his Act 120 certification from the Delaware

Department. In his spare time, John enjoys spending time with his family. He and his wife have three children, ranging in age from 7 months to 11 years, and a fourth child is on the way. John can also often be found making repairs or improvements to cars or exercising his passion for motorcycles. Although Marasco was born in Wilmington, Del., his family moved to Chester County when he was an infant. He considers himself a Coatesville native since he grew up in that area. He experienced strong military and law-enforcement influences from multiple family members, but he did not decide to follow that lead until after earning a bachelor’s degree in international business from Widener University. Since then, Marasco obtained a real estate license, traveled around the world, and joined the Pennsylvania Army

This month, Octorara field hockey will set up cones and children will be able to practice field hockey.” Alexander noted that there are generally 30 to 40 vendors and five food trucks. “We switch it up so there are different kinds of food, including desserts,” she added. PAC plans and organizes each Final Friday in conjunction with the borough of Parkesburg. “One of the reasons we decided to do (Final Friday) was to bring awareness of all the great things we have in Parkesburg,” said Alexander. “It’s nice to see people from surrounding communities come in.” For more information about Final Friday, visit www.parkesburgfinal friday.weebly.com or search for “Parkesburg Action Committee” on Facebook.

LGLC To Host Multi-Church Picnic

Living God Lutheran Church in Honey Brook will host a multichurch picnic on Aug. 26. Area Lutherans are invited to attend the free event to meet other Lutherans in the area and to enjoy a potluck meal, music, children’s games and fellowship. By Francine Fulton

As part of an effort to promote fellowship and sharing among members of local Lutheran congregations, a multi-church picnic will be held at Living God Lutheran Church (LGLC) in Honey Brook on Sunday, Aug. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. Participating in the picnic will be

congregation members from LGLC, as well as the following Lutheran churches: Messiah of Downingtown, Good Shepherd of Coatesville, St. Paul’s of Lionville and Community of Love of Oxford. Area Lutherans are invited to attend the free event to meet other Lutherans in the area and to enjoy a potluck meal, music, children’s games and a time of fellowship. All those attending will also be able to walk

LGLC’s nature trail, located on the church property. According to LGLC worship leader Sue Fessenbecker, one of the event organizers, the joint effort began earlier this year when members of local churches that were being led by interim pastors met to discuss the issues of finding a permanent pastor. “Lutherans have a lengthy process (for appointing a pastor),” she explained, noting that pastors in search of a new appointment are matched with churches who are seeking a pastor based on their profiles. Candidates are then interviewed and voted on by the congregation. “(Getting together) was a joint effort between Messiah and Living God Lutheran churches, which were both without pastors and decided to meet and join resources,” Fessenbecker continued. “We all struggle with ... how long the process takes, and we get discouraged. We try to keep everyone upbeat. We know it will happen in God’s time, and we are here to support each other.” The churches’ first joint activity was in March, when they took part in a private screening of “I Can Only Imagine” at a local movie theater. Fessenbecker said that last year, LGLC
