Cornerstone sets annual Walk-Pull for Life

Cornerstone

Reproductive Health

(formerly known as Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone) will present its ninth annual Walk-Pull for Life, featuring a 5K walk, a flag football tournament, a chicken barbecue and children’s activities. The event, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., will take place at Salisbury Township Park, 750 White Horse Road, Gap.

Registration for the flag football tournament will begin at 8 a.m. “We have teams that are from local businesses and churches that come to compete,” said Kristi Martin, Cornerstone’s executive director. “We have professional referees that come in, and our board members will set up the field.”

She noted that the Walk-Pull for Life formerly included a walk and a tug-of-war, but that evolved into a flag football event. “(Organizers) wanted to do something unique. You have to ‘pull’ the flags off to play flag football,” Martin explained.

Registration for the 5K walk will open at 8:30 a.m. Same-day registrations will be welcome.

There will be an opening prayer by Adrian Young, board president, and a brief presentation about Cornerstone and its services. The walk, which will be contained within the boundaries of the park, will begin at 9 a.m.

The 5K route is paved and stroller friendly. Prizes will be awarded to the individual walker and team of walkers who collect the most funds from sponsorships.

The chicken barbecue will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Meals will consist of a half-chicken, a roll with butter, applesauce, chips, a beverage and a cookie. There will also be a chicken-only option. The deadline to preorder chicken is Thursday, Sept. 28. Chicken will be available on a first-come, firstserved basis on the day of the event.

A free Kids Zone will include barrel train rides, face painting and a balloon artist. Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary will present a show at 10 a.m.

Cornerstone serves as a resource for women experiencing unexpected pregnancies. It offers free pregnancy testing, ultrasound and prenatal and parenting incentive programs,

among other services.

“We have rebranded,” said Martin, noting that the announcement about the name change was made in July along with the unveiling of a new logo. “Our services have changed and evolved over the past couple of years. We felt that reproductive health encompasses everyone and more services rather than just pregnancy resources. We wanted it to be a little more medically focused and encompass more services and include men.”

The agency is currently building a mobile medical unit. “It’s like an RV with a doctor’s office in itabout the size of a UPS truck,” Martin noted. “It will offer the same services we offer (at the office), including pregnancy confirmation and ultrasound.”

To register for the walk or flag football tournament, visit www.pacornerstone.org and choose “About” and then “Events.” The deadline to enter a team into the tournament is Sept. 28. More information about Cornerstone, which is located at 5380 Lincoln Highway, Gap, is available by visiting www.facebook.com/ cornerstonereproductivehealth or calling 717-442-8694.

As part of an effort to offer informative and entertaining events for the community, WordUP Community Ministries will present a showing of the movie “Fireproof” on Saturday, Oct. 7. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and the movie will start at 5 p.m. The movie will be screened on two 65-inch television screens at WordUP, a nondenominational church located at 160 Route 41, Gap,

in the Dutchland Inc. building. Free bottled water, popcorn and candy will be available.

“Fireproof,” which stars former child actor Kurt Cameron, tells the story of firefighter Caleb Holt and his wife, Catherine, whose marriage is falling apart after seven years. As the couple prepares to begin divorce proceedings, Caleb’s father challenges his son to commit to an effort he calls “The Love Dare.”

WordUP Ministries to host movie screening Community Days to benefit BridgeWay House

BridgeWay House, located at 720 Buck Run Road in East Fallowfield, will host its first Community Days fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 1 to 8 p.m. Admission is free, although some of the activities will have a nominal fee. Proceeds from the event will be used to renovate a barn at BridgeWay House, a nonprofit addiction treatment center. Once completed, the building will be named Joey’s Barn in memory of Joey Bilder.

According to his mom, Jacqueline Bilder, who is a BridgeWay House board member, Joey struggled with addiction for eight years before he died at the age of 27. “I believe with all my heart that if my son Joey could have connected with BridgeWay, he may still be with us today,” she stated. “Joey passed away in April 2022 from a fentanyl/heroin overdose after doing well in his recovery. I make it my goal to stand with those at BridgeWay House who are doing amazing work and saving lives.”

Community Days frompg 1

Community Days will feature children’s activities, food trucks, a silent auction of gift baskets and chances to win prizes, including a 70-inch television. A DJ will provide music and a local barber will offer haircuts by donation.

“We will have pony rides and a bouncy castle and food, including hamburgers and hot dogs and baked goods. We are blessed that so many have come together to donate items and materials. We would love the community to come out,” said Bilder. “(Since) this event is focused on recovery and addiction services to support those in recovery, we will have some of the recovery

Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family

homes coming out.” She noted that members of the East Fallowfield Police Department will also be on hand to meet with the community.

Visitors to Community Days may also sponsor a plaque that will be placed inside the barn once it is renovated. The plaques may include personal messages such as “One Day at a Time,” “Stay the Course” and “Just Live This Day!” “These (messages) will provide constant inspiration for those who see them,” Bilder said.

Joey’s Barn will serve as a gathering and education space where BridgeWay’s residents can support one another in their journey to recovery.

Bilder reported that construction work in the barn has already begun. “The plumbing has gone in, and they have put a floor in, and a lot of the wood (framing has been installed). The electri-

cians are starting to run wire. It’s so exciting,” she said, noting that the barn will be open on Community Days. “(The building) always had good bones. It needed HVAC, electric and plumbing to winterize it. People can walk through it and see the work that is being done.”

BridgeWay House aims to provide safe, secure and supportive programs; housing and job placement assistance; and more for those who are trying to stay sober. It is certified by both the Pennsylvania Alliance of Recovery Residences and the National Alliance for Recovery Residences.

Calling all animal lovers

Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road North, Quarryville, will host its annual Whiskers, Wags and Wine event on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The rain-or-shine fundraiser will include a variety of vendors, food trucks, prize drawings and live entertainment, and it will highlight multiple nonprofit organizations dedicated to animal advocacy.

Inside the venue, items such as clothing, baked goods, hard-cut meats, jewelry and pet accessories will be available to purchase from more than 20 vendors. Among other alcoholic beverages, a drink special will be offered at the bar on the second floor. A portion of the proceeds from the drink special will be donated to the nonprofits participating in the event.

Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks on the front lawn of the property, and prize drawings will be held throughout the day. The proceeds from food sales and prize drawing tickets will benefit several animal advocacy organizations, which will operate booths to offer information and collect donations. Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet rescued dogs at a doggy kissing booth during the fundraiser, and each of the dogs will be available to adopt.

A variety of the participating nonprofits serve the greater mid-Atlantic area, although organizations such as Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation and Woerth It Hollow are based in the Southern End. Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation, located in Millersville, specializes in the rehabilitation of small woodland creatures such as squirrels, rabbits and groundhogs. Woerth It Hollow operates a facility in Kirkwood to provide equine therapy services for individuals with disabilities while also rehabilitating injured or rescued horses.

Leo’s Helping Paws, Honey’s RAID and Fund-A-Bull Bulldogs in Rescue are groups that seek to raise awareness of issues such as puppy mills and dog fighting, and each group raises funds for medical grants for abused or neglected animals. Other featured rescues will include Charlie’s Crusaders Pet Rescue, Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue, Angie’s Stray Foundation and Good Old

Tails Senior Animal Rescue.

From Wednesday, Sept. 27, until the end of Whiskers, Wags and Wine, Britain Hill will accept donations of items from a wish list on its Facebook page. The list includes specific items that are needed the most by this year’s supported animal advocates, such as collars, cleaning supplies, dog crates, unopened food and treats and gently used toys. Donations may be dropped off in the driveway of the vineyard, and they will be distributed to the nonprofits after the end of the fundraiser.

“This isn’t just a community event. It’s a call to action

for animals,” said Debbie Helm, owner of Britain Hill. “It’s a great opportunity to bring your family, bring your dog and enjoy the day. Anything you buy will contribute in some way.”

Helm created the fundraising event three years ago, inspired by her love for animals and her own rescued dogs. In addition to spreading awareness for animal-related issues and raising money for each organization, Helm said her goal is to assist their volunteers by donating essential items.

40-day challenge. In the movie, he does it for his wife,” explained Buck Mowday, WordUP pastor. “(The challenge requires that) every day you do something for your wife. Maybe one day you send flowers or make her a meal.”

Mowday noted that two Love Dare journals will be given away on the night of the movie through a random drawing of tickets. The Christian devotional offers daily entries that include a passage from Scripture, a journaling area, a check box to chart progress and the day’s “dare,” such as calling your spouse at work to see how his or her

day is going.

“This movie is an old movie, but I think there are a lot of younger people who have not seen it,” noted Mowday. “We are big on marriage and supporting marriages. If you are dating or planning to date or engaged (or) if your marriage is great or isn’t so great, I think it would be beneficial to see this movie.”

Additionally, WordUP has partnered with A&J’s Twisted Kitchen, 3572 Lincoln Highway East, Kinzers, to offer a special program for movie goers. Those who dine at the restaurant on Friday, Oct. 6,

Mowday emphasized that the upcoming movie night is designed for couples to enjoy together. No babysitting will be provided. “This will be a date night. Take your wife, husband, boyfriend or girl-

Jay’s Handyman Service

Turning houses into homes

“This isn’t a handout,” said Amanda Reilly-Sokoli, executive director of the Pennsylvania Furniture Mission. “It’s a hand up. Our goal is to fill a hole and a need in the community. We work with existing organizations, and we support the whole family.”

Pennsylvania Furniture Mission opened in June in a warehouse off of Chestnut Street in Columbia.

“We provide a full household of furniture to people who need it,” said Pashk Sokoli, chief operating officer and Amanda’s husband. “People get to choose what they want. We have couches, tables, chairs, dressers, mattresses, beds, lamps, small appliances. We give them the dignity of choice. Our goal is to convert a house into a home.”

Although the 501(c)(3) organization is new to the

region, its operating concept is well-established. Prior to relocating to central Pennsylvania, Pashk served as director of operations for the Chicago Furniture Bank, the largest furniture bank in the nation.

An Albanian immigrant, he grew up in a family that at times experienced homelessness. He met Berks Countynative Amanda when she was doing mission work in Albania, and they ultimately decided to launch their own furniture mission in Amanda’s home state.

“We wanted to work in a place where the help was most needed,” Pashk said, of the decision to start the organization in Columbia. From its warehouse, the Pennsylvania Furniture Mission can serve

clients in five counties - Lancaster, York, Dauphin, Lebanon and Berks.

The organization relies on donations for its inventory, accepting gently used furniture from individuals as well as from companies and organizations who are closing or transitioning to new items.

“We have standards for the furniture we accept,” Pashk said. “We won’t take anything with stains, rips or tears. If we don’t think we can use it in our home, we don’t take it.”

All items are thoroughly cleaned with high-grade sanitizer, and many pieces are refurbished or refinished at the warehouse before they go out to a client’s home.

Pennsylvania Furniture Mission clients are referred to

the organization by various community nonprofit organizations. Clients are able to come in person to shop for furniture in the warehouse, or they can set up a virtual appointment.

The organization delivers the furniture to the client’s home, and Amanda and Pashk recently took out a loan to purchase a 16-foot box truck for deliveries, which is saving them time and money now that they don’t have to rent delivery trucks. They are looking for sponsors to help offset the cost of the new truck, and sponsors will be able to place a sticker with their logo on the truck.

So far, both Amanda and Pashk are volunteering in their positions with the Pennsylvania Furniture Mission. Their goal is to be able to not only provide employment for people to drive the delivery truck and help with deliveries, but also earn a salary themselves.

For now, however, they are content with the strides they’ve made in a short amount of time.

“We believe in empowering people,” Amanda said, noting that their clientele includes anyone experiencing financial hardship, including people coming out of homelessness or incarceration. “Our goal is to get them established for future success.”

School safety tips offered

With a new school year in its early stages, parents and schools are concerned with ensuring children’s safety and well-being. Whether a child is heading to kindergarten or high school, parents may consider the following tips, provided by the Center for Safe Schools.

Parents should maintain open lines of communication with their child. Encourage the child to share concerns about safety, interactions with peers, or unusual incidents. Awareness of the child’s feelings may help parents address issues promptly and offer guidance.

If a child walks or bikes to school, parents should help him or her plan a safe route that minimizes exposure to busy roads and dangerous intersections. Parents and children may practice the route together until children are comfortable navigating it independently. Children should be reminded to wait in well-lit areas, cross streets at designated crosswalks, and avoid distractions like headphones while walking near traffic.

Parents are encouraged to review personal safety guidelines with their children, regardless of the children’s age. Parents may want to avoid using the term “stranger danger,” as statistically, most child abductions are committed by someone known to the victim. Children should be given a list of trusted adults they can contact in an emergency.

Children with access to the internet should be educated about online safety. They should know how to protect their personal information, avoid sharing sensitive data, and recognize potential online threats. Guardians may consider installing parental control software if necessary.

Parents should ensure children know their full name, the parents’ contact information, and emergency contact details. Children should memorize these details in case they need help and cannot access their phone.

Parents may want to discuss bullying with children and emphasize the importance of treating others with kindness and respect. If a child is bullied or witnesses someone else being bullied, the incident should be reported to a trusted adult.

At about 7 weeks old, Madrid was tossed out of a car and was rescued by a passer-by. Madrid suffered a severely fractured leg. He has had surgery on his leg and was casted for several weeks.

He arrived at LDAR several weeks ago and was recently taken to a veterinarian who reported that his leg is healing nicely but he may always walk or run with a limp. However, it doesn’t stop him from being a friendly and happy puppy. He loves people and other dogs. Those interested in adopting Madrid may complete an application at www.luckydawg animalrescue.com.
