Craft fair to feature vendors, homemade food, prize drawings and more
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Our Lady of Consolation
Church will host its 38th annual craft fair on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Schneider Parish Center, 2995 Cemetery Road, Parkesburg. The event will feature a sale of crafts, homemade food, an opportunity to win prizes and a visit by Santa.
More than 50 artisans, crafters and vendors will be featured on two floors inside the center. “We have 55-plus crafters this year, and if it’s nice, we will have another five
or six people (set up) outside,” said the parish’s director of religious education, Janice Dagney, who is also one of the event organizers.
Offered for sale will be wreaths, wooden flags, candles, jewelry, holiday décor, soaps, candles, crocheted and sewn items, pottery and pet items. “Burnt Timbers Winery will join us this year, and we have the PhillyMead Winery,” said Dagney. “A new little bakery - Flour Girl Breads in Parkesburg - will sell breads.”
Visitors will also be able to enjoy a chair massage offered by one of the vendors, and face
painting will be available for children for a small fee.
Food items offered for sale will include baked goods, homemade chicken corn soup, chili, gourmet chicken salad and quiches.
Santa will stop by for a visit and sit for pictures from 10 a.m. to noon. A nominal fee will be charged. “We did confirm that the Parkesburg Grinch will be visiting,” said Dagney, noting that he will also be available at the same time and will pose for photos.
Visitors can enter to win door prizes throughout the day.

A Night With Tony Dungy
The Parkesburg POINT announces fall fundraiser
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Super Bowl champion coach, sports analyst and author Tony Dungy will be the keynote speaker at The Parkesburg POINT’s annual fall fundraiser.
“A Night With Tony Dungy” will be presented on Monday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. at Coatesville Area Senior High School, 1445 Lincoln Highway East, Coatesville. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
Dungy is the latest in a long line of sports figures that have spoken at The POINT’s fall fundraiser. Past speakers have included former NFL players Tim Tebow and Brian Dawkins. The POINT was able to secure the speakers with the help of sports radio talk show host Rob Maaddi, who has a syndicated talk show, “Faith on the Field.” Maaddi will also be featured at the upcoming event.
All speakers “align with the values” of The POINT, according
to Dwayne Walton, executive director. “We’re excited. (Dungy) is so respected in the world of sports not just as coach but a mentor,” said Walton. “He has written several books to challenge people to be leaders. Anyone that knows the NFL and sports respects him.”

Event to benefit Limeville’s Blessings
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Limeville Church, 5783 Limeville Road, Gap, will host a fall craft fair on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Also featured will be a silent auction and a sale of food items.
The craft fair will be set up downstairs in the church’s fellowship hall. Crafts for sale will include leather jewelry and leather crafts, custom iced coffee cups and crocheted items.
“Someone will sell wreaths, and we have (several) crochet
vendors who make different things,” said congregation member Melanie Shivery, who is organizing the event along with Danae Baldwin. “There will be variety of handmade gifts.” Silent auction items, which have been donated by local businesses, will include tickets to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Hands-on House in Lancaster, Dutch Lanes in Ephrata and the Turkey Hill Experience in Lancaster. “The majority of crafters also donate items for the silent auction,” noted Shivery.

The silent auction will close at 1 p.m. Bidders do not have to be present to win.
Food items will include hot dogs and beef barbecue. Takeouts will be available. “We are having iced coffee and a hot chocolate bar,” Shivery added.
All proceeds from the craft fair will support the church’s children’s ministry and the Limeville’s Blessings store, which offers free clothing, household items, children’s toys, toiletries and more to people in need. The store, which Shivery operates, opened at the church in July of 2022. Anyone in need of assistance is welcome to visit the store, and no proof of income or residency is required. Limeville’s Blessings is currently open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
SINGING SPRING FOODS
“The total (number of) families helped this year is 704, which brings our (total) number up to 1,807 since opening,” Shivery reported.
People are permitted to visit the store to collect free items once per month. Donations of gently used clothing, shoes, bedding, blankets and small kitchen appliances are also accepted during store hours. Especially needed are children’s
clothing sizes preemie through 14/16.
“We are collecting new children’s toys for our annual toy giveaway. This will be my second year doing it,” said Shivery, noting that parents will be given one ticket per child to redeem for a free toy. “People can register with how many children they have. We set up the fellowship hall as a toy store. We have a wrapping station so they can wrap the toys before they go home, and we give them
big black trash bags (to hide the gifts). The parents have a good time.”

Crafters who would like to take part in the event can register by visiting www .limevillechurch.org and choosing “Craft Show” on the homepage. Payment for vendors who want to participate is due by Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Initiative to honor veterans
For the third year, the Chester County commissioners and Chester County Department of Veterans Affairs are supporting Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide initiative that recognizes the contributions of veterans and their families. Operation Green Light will take place this year from Monday, Nov. 4, to Monday, Nov. 11. As part of the initiative, the commissioners will present a proclamation, and they will illuminate the façade of the Chester County Historic Courthouse in green from Nov. 4 to 11. The county encourages residents to join in supporting Operation Green Light by shining a green light bulb from Nov. 4 to 11 to show veterans and their families that they are seen and appreciated.
To help with the effort, Chester County Veterans Affairs is giving away green light bulbs to county residents and businesses, thanks to a grant from Walmart. The light bulbs will be available while supplies last. Locations where free green light bulbs may be obtained include the Chester County Department of Veterans Affairs located in the Government Services Center, 601 Westtown Road, West Chester. For more details, visit www.chesco.org/ veterans.
The Chester County Department of Veterans Affairs encourages anyone participating in Operation Green Light to take a photo of his or her green light display and send it to ccveterans@chesco.org.
Operation Green Light was established by the National Association of
Counties and is supported by the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania.
Veterans are encouraged to learn about the benefits and resources available to them. Tdap vaccines available at Giant and Martin’s pharmacies
Following a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is on the rise, the Giant Company announced that Tdap vaccines are now available in all Giant and Martin’s in-store pharmacies.
Whooping cough is a serious respiratory disease that can be life-threatening for infants. The CDC recommends Tdap vaccinations for everyone with booster doses every 10 years or sooner if the person is pregnant or injured. This vaccine is a combination of shots that protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.
Giant and Martin’s pharmacies in Pennsylvania can vaccinate customers
age 18 and up without a prescription
If customers are unsure if they are in need of a Tdap vaccine, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists can look at their medical history and determine eligibility. Walk-in vaccinations are available, but customers can save time by booking an appointment online at www.giantfoodstores.com/ pages/tgc-vaccines or www .martinsfoods.com/pages/ tgc-vaccines. Customers must bring photo ID and a prescription insurance card. Parental consent is required, and a parent or guardian must be on-site. In addition, customers can visit any in-store Giant or Martin’s pharmacy to receive their flu vaccination. Flu and pertussis vaccines can be given together.
Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely,
Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

Starting a social club for seniors
Various changes are associated with aging, and these can be physical, mental, and emotional. Although each person manages these changes in his or her own way, there’s no denying that social interaction can benefit people from all walks of life as they navigate their golden years.
The Foundation for Senior Care says socializing can give seniors a sense of purpose,
stimulate the mind, relieve boredom, potentially prevent feelings of depression, and give individuals something to look forward to. The senior living center Aston Gardens says socialization provides a significant boost to the cognitive health of older adults, helping to prevent or delay conditions that can affect memory. Individuals looking to cultivate healthy social interactions

When considering forming a new group, people must decide on the group’s purpose. Social clubs can meet and be organized around any number of themes or interests, such as gardening, crocheting, reading, or other shared hobbies. Friends also may be interested in doing food
and beverage sampling. In such instances, a luncheon social club makes sense. After choosing a theme, conduct a search of groups already meeting within a 50-mile radius to see if an existing group already meets your criteria. If not, proceed full speed ahead to establish the new club.

All prizes will be a variety of new designer bags and accessories. Extra books and daubers will be for sale. There will also be an opportunity for guests to purchase tickets to win gift baskets. A snack bar will be open offering entrees, desserts and snacks.
Tony Dungy
Former Eagles coach
Dick Vermeil is scheduled to introduce Dungy at the event. “(Vermeil) is a wonderful man, and he and Tony are good friends,” noted Walton.
Walton said that it is especially fitting to have a coach speak at a fundraiser that will benefit youths. “Coaches are so important to the demographic we work with. Coaches encourage (student-athletes) to also focus on their academics and get them graduated,” said Walton. “Our kids matter, and we want to do whatever we can to keep them ahead of the game. There are obstacles, but together we can help them through the obstacles.”
Players and coaches from throughout Chester County, including the Coatesville and Octorara Area School districts, have been encouraged to attend.
“We serve Coatesville and Octorara students (at The POINT), but other students throughout Chester County need that message of hope, and Tony will bring it and hopefully it will resonate with them,” said Walton. “Bringing people like Dungy in matters. He will bring a message of hope.”
All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit The POINT, located at 700 Main St., Parkesburg. The POINT provides a variety of programs and services for students in grades two through 12 such as offering a healthy dinner during the school year and both lunch and dinner during the summer. The POINT also offers sports
and recreation programs, including basketball, boxing, soccer, gaga ball and flag football, as well as hands-on job training.
“From January to now, we registered over 700 students, which does not count the weekend sporting events. We serve 20,000 meals every year,” Walton reported. “We are growing exponentially, and to keep up with the growth we need the support.”
The POINT also offers opportunities for students to serve the community.
“In September, we took 10 students from Collegium Charter School, Coatesville, Octorara and Conestoga Christian School to Montana to serve at the Crow Indian Reservation,”
Walton said. “Some of these kids are beaten down with challenges, but they were inspired to serve and help others.”
“Native American reservations are the toughest places with a lot of poverty,” he continued. “(Students from The POINT) played basketball with the young people to connect and develop relationships. Kids traveling to serve others is something we can all applaud.”
In an Instagram post, Dungy expressed his excitement about speaking in Chester County, noting he has an affinity for Pennsylvania because of his time spent playing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. “I’m excited to really share the message of hope and the Gospel,” he stated. “Our young people need to get that message, and I hope we can get pastors and caring adults
people (to the event). Yes, it is a sports fun night, but we will hear a Gospel message … and it will be impactful for the rest of your lives.”
Tickets can be purchased through noon on Nov. 4. No tickets will be sold at the door. For tickets or more information, visit www.parkesburgpoint .com or www.facebook .com/parkesburg.point. Those with questions may call The POINT at 610-857-3393.
Craft show will support wreath program
BY ANN MEAD ASH
On Saturday, Dec. 14, the Pequea Valley Cemeteries division of the Wreaths Across America program will lay more than 2,800 wreaths on the graves of veterans in 28 Octoraraand Pequea Valley-area cemeteries.
To foot the bill for all those wreaths, which is fast approaching $50,000 a year, the organization holds a number of annual fundraisers, including a bingo and golf outing. This year, for the first time, a craft and vendor show will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Gap Fire Company, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap.
“It’s our first year, but we are hoping to make it annual,” said Deb Plum, who is working with Paula Diem to organize the event. Plum first suggested the event to Diem, noting, “I said it might be fun to do.” Plum, who has now gathered more than 20 crafters and vendors to take part in the event, added, “It’s going over well.”
Among the vendors Plum has lined up are those selling packaged food items and cooking gear, along with crafters making crocheted items or working with glass or wood. Candles, pumpkin rolls, and chocolate-covered foods will be among the items offered for sale, along with dried flowers, jewelry, and clothing. Diem noted that a few young entrepreneurs will be selling their wares at the show. “They will share a space,” said Plum of the two brothers who make dog
treats to sell and the young lady who creates beaded pens.
Prizes and giveaways will also be part of the event. “Vendors will each donate an item to be (given away),” said Plum. Diem added that fall and Christmas décor items will also be among the prizes.
Hungry attendees will find a variety of food items prepared and sold by the Gap Fire Company, including breakfast sandwiches, lunch items, and beverages.
Wreaths Across America places wreaths on the graves of veterans every holiday season to remember and honor those who served in the military and teach others, especially children, about the value of freedom. The Pequea Valley Cemeteries program will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS), 166 S. New Holland Road, Kinzers. The event will begin with a ceremony at noon, and then wreaths will be distributed to more than 300 volunteers to be placed on graves.
“We used to take a bus to Arlington every year and lay wreaths,” explained Plum, “but then we decided to do this locally.” Diem recalled that the first year the effort was held, about 1,250 wreaths were placed on local graves.
Readers who would like more information about the craft and vendor show or the area Wreaths Across America program may search for “Wreaths Across America - Pequea Valley Cemeteries” on Facebook.
Church to host Flourish Conference for women
Pastor Michele Masteller of Freedom Life Church invites women from the community to be encouraged and refreshed at the Flourish Conference set for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 2.
In the past, the Flourish Conference was hosted at Freedom Life Church along Noble Road in Christiana, but because the church is in the process of moving its campus to a new facility, the Flourish Conference will be hosted at Smith Middle School, located at 645 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville.
Guest speakers for the Flourish Conference will be Tori Hammer and Miriam Fleming. Hammer oversees a team of youth pastors at Elevation Church. She has served in youth and college ministry for the past eight years, and she is passionate about the local church and helping individuals encounter the powerful presence of God.
Fleming founded the Resilient Women ministry in 2019 to empower women, and she is currently launching She Leads Strong, a mentorship
cohort to help women in their faith and leadership journeys.
The Flourish Conference will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 1. Doors will open at 6 p.m. The Flourish Conference will resume on Nov. 2 at 9:30 a.m., with doors opening for breakfast treats at 8:30 a.m.
Following the conclusion of the conference at noon, women are invited to enjoy an optional lunch at The Houston Cafe in Gap. The space has been rented for the ladies to enjoy a nice meal and social gathering after the event.
Another element of the annual Flourish Conference is the community service project. In continuation from years past, the Flourish Conference
Safety tips for pet owners
Newly adopted pets waste little time becoming beloved members of a household. But much like young children, pets are a significant responsibility, and they rely on their human caretakers
to ensure their safety. To help ensure a pet’s health and happiness, people may follow a few tips, courtesy of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Old Farm Veterinary Hospital, and Security.org.
Pet owners may consider installing an indoor and outdoor security camera system. Having eyes on pets while they are alone at home may enable a quick response should something happen.
Pet food should not be left outdoors overnight. Dog and cat foods can attract other animals, such as bears, raccoons, foxes, and opossums, depending on where a person lives. Wild animals grow accustomed to receiving easy meals, which could decrease their trepidation about being around a home or yard. Run-ins between pets and wild animals
will raise money for five local pregnancy resource centers. Before the conference, women can pick up a baby bottle from Freedom Life Church and fill it with spare change at home or work. Ladies are also welcome to bring a donation to the conference. The money from the collection will be distributed to Love Life, Cornerstone Reproductive Health, Chester County Connect Care, A Woman’s Concern and Pregnancy Resource Clinic.
Preregistration for the Flourish Conference is appreciated. Individuals may register at www.free dom.life/flourish-conf. Those with questions can email info@freedom.life or call 610-593-5959.
should be avoided.
People should not use a retractable leash. Walking a pet on a non-retractable leash allows better control of the animal in the event of an encounter with a person or another animal.
It is important to be cautious with chemicals. Pet owners should consider any chemicals they use in their yard, including pesticides and weed killers, as well as cleaning products used indoors. Pets can ingest or inhale these products and get sick.
Potential choking hazards should be picked up from the floor so that pets will not swallow them. These items include string, small pieces of toys, and rawhide bone fragments.
Before starting a car when it is cold outside, families that allow their cats outdoor access should thump on the car hood.
Cats sometimes take shelter near a warm engine block, and they can become injured if a person starts the car while they are under the hood.
Pets should be kept up to date on their vaccinations. Whether pets never step outdoors or have free rein, people should vaccinate companion animals against common parasites and other pests.
Microchipping is also advisable. Microchips not only protect pets should they get lost, but they also can help track down animals that may have been stolen. People should keep the microchip data current to ensure a swift recovery. Pet owners should keep foods and medicines out of reach. Pets can be curious, and many human foods can be toxic to them.
By taking these steps, people can help to safeguard their pets’ well-being.

Social club
be available, such as posting information in a community bulletin or on a message board at a local house of worship, the internet can sometimes be a speedier messenger. Facebook groups are one way to organize social clubs, as is the website Meetup.com. The latter is a large online network of offline groups that meet all over the country and the world. The website makes it a snap to organize a local group or find an existing club.
Group leaders should also establish consistent meeting times, as most people prefer a schedule so they can plan their days accordingly. Choose a regular meeting time and place to hold the social club; otherwise, it can be
confusing to accommodate everyone. Inconsistency also can make it hard to get the club off the ground.
People forming new clubs are advised to start small and then build. For those new to hosting social clubs, it may be better to begin with only a few members as everyone gets into a groove. As the group becomes more established, it can be opened up to more members, although people may consider capping membership so that the group is more easily managed.
Social clubs are a great way for seniors to stay connected and active.
When there isn’t one that meets a person’s interests, he or she may consider starting one.

Volunteer readers sought for Ag Literacy Week
The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is seeking volunteer readers for its ninth annual Ag Literacy Week, which is set to occur from Monday to Friday, March 17 to 21. Volunteers from communities across the state will visit classrooms and other student groups to read the book “The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” and talk about local farming.
Ag Literacy Week connects volunteers from the agricultural community to local classrooms to share the story of agriculture. Readers have the opportunity to talk about farming and agriculture through the book they read as well as sharing their own story about farming, agriculture programs they are involved with, or their connections to agriculture. After each reading event, volunteers donate a copy of the book and educational activities to the classroom to be used throughout the year and with future classes. More than 2,000 copies of the book will be presented in classrooms in Pennsylvania this year.
“The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” explores the joys of planting a garden, nurturing and harvesting food, and recycling scraps to compost, ensuring that the cycle of growth and sustainability continues. Scientific facts about soil, plants, pollinators, decomposers, and more are included on every spread. The book encourages young readers to become environmental stewards, learn how to care for a garden, understand a plant life cycle, and discover the power of pollinators and the importance of composting.
To register as a volunteer reader by Friday, Dec. 13, or to learn more, visit www.pfbfriends.com/ ag-literacy-week/.
The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is a charitable organization supported by the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. The foundation has been educating the public and promoting agriculture since its inception in 1986. To learn more about foundation programs, go to www.pfbfriends.com.

Tips for fuel conservation
often a top priority for consumers, and bills paid at the gas pump are no exception. Drivers can follow a few simple tips to help save money on gas.
Lighten the load. How much weight is being carted around in a vehicle can directly affect the amount of gas it consumes. Remove any unnecessary items from the trunk or cargo area of a truck or SUV. Consider removing extra accessories, like roof racks or hitches.
Accelerate slowly. Resist the urge to gun it when beginning to move after a stop light or stop sign, as rapid acceleration wastes gas. Press the accelerator pedal gently to increase speed gradually and conserve fuel. Similarly, coast to a stop, rather than slamming on the brakes.
Consider whether to use air conditioning or put the windows down. While it’s true that the air conditioning will drain fuel when in use, driving with the windows open makes the vehicle less aerodynamic by causing drag. Some experts recommended leaving the windows down during slower city driving and using the air conditioning for higher speeds on the highway.
Keep tires properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires can make a vehicle less efficient by causing more friction between tires and the roadway. Check the PSI rating for the tires and inflate accordingly. Many modern vehicles automatically alert drivers when tires are low on air.
Don’t idle. Turn off the engine if the car will be idling for more than a minute. Modern engines do not need to be warmed up for more than 30 to 60 seconds, even when the weather is cold. Driving will warm up the car faster than idling while parked, provided the car is driven moderately until the temperature gauge shows the car has reached the right temperature.
Drive a consistent speed. When driving on the highway, switch to cruise control to maintain a consistent speed. This action can reduce drag, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.
Stick to a maintenance schedule. Maintaining a vehicle by getting routine oil changes, fluid checks and other simple upkeep helps a car or truck run properly, which can help conserve fuel.
These are just a few strategies drivers may employ to conserve fuel.
