Parkesburg Free Library welcomes new director
BY FRANCINE FULTON
“It is a beautiful library.
It is light and airy, and I could tell that it was a very community-oriented place just from when you first walk in,” said Faith Dopirak, the new director of Parkesburg Free Library when describing her first visit to the library, adding, “The staff was all very friendly.”
Dopirak replaces long-time library director Tom Knecht, who retired in 2023. After interviewing with the library board, she was named director in August. “I was the children’s librarian at the Oxford Library until 2019. I was there for two years,” she explained. “In between there and
here, I was a stay-at-home mom for a few years.”
A graduate of Avon Grove High School, Dopirak received a degree in fashion design and English from Albright College. She earned a master’s degree in library and information science from Clarion University, now known as PennWest Clarion.
Dopirak said that she plans to continue the library’s successful programming and add new activities as well. The library currently offers a Chess Club on Tuesdays, with groups that meet at 12:30 p.m. and at 4:15 p.m.; Story Hour, which is offered on Wednesdays at 10 a.m.; Kids Craft & Story Time, offered on Thursdays at noon; a Mystery
Book Club, which meets on the third Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m.; and a knitting club, which meets on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m.
“There are really great programs here. The Chess Club is very well attended on Tuesdays, and we have a knitting group and a Mystery Book Club that has been well attended for many years,” said Dopirak. “I have started a new story time. There was already story time on Wednesdays that was put together in conjunction with the (Octorara) Primary Learning Center. I do the story time on Thursdays now. As a previous children’s librarian, I could jump right into the children’s programming.”

The Factory plans fourth homecoming
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“The Pequea Valley community is one that rallies together to care for one another,” shared Adam Nagle, executive director of The Factory Ministries. “As an organization, we’ve really centered on that energy.” Nagle is looking forward to celebrating that spirit of community care, which has been a focus of The Factory for three decades. “For the past 30 years now, we have been honing in and looking at the needs of (Pequea Valley
residents) and seeing how we can best empower this incredible community to care for one another,” Nagle added.
The fourth annual Homecoming Open House and Kickoff to the ExtraGive will be held at The Factory, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, sponsored by Stoltzfus Meats. The evening will include games, prizes, selfguided tours, a silent auction, and an address by Peter Greer, CEO of HOPE International.

Factory homecoming
Everyone who attends will have the chance to tour The Factory, formerly Paradise Elementary School. “The tour will focus on stories of the lives that have been changed in each of our four departments,” said Ellie Green, communications director. Green noted that the four featured departments will be adult advocacy, the Factory Market, the Building Braves Center, and the youth center.
“A lot of exciting things have transpired in this historic building,” said Nagle. “This is an opportunity to
come be inspired by the stories of your neighbors in a beautiful setting.” Green added that there will be fun games with significant prizes for those attending the open house.
New this year is a “sweet tooth tour” that will end in the silent auction areaRoom 117 adjacent to the gymnatorium. A number of items will be up for bids.
“We’re excited to welcome back Joe Bartolo from Bartolo Auction Enterprises to host a silent auction that will include travel experiences, such as an overnight stay in the Poconos, water-

park passes, and trips to Antigua and Barbados,” said Green, adding that exclusive sports memorabilia, including signed items from Jason Kelce, and much more will be auctioned.
Greer will give the keynote presentation in the gymnatorium at 6:30 p.m.
Several of The Factory staff members will also speak, and a film about the 30 years of The Factory, made by MAKE/FILMS, will be presented. Nagle will provide closing remarks.
Refreshments at the event will include meats, cheeses, fruits and vegetables, sweet treats, and beverages, such as coffee.
Registration for the homecoming and open house is recommended, but not required. Those who wish to register ahead are asked to do so by Thursday, Nov. 14, by visiting https:// rb.gy/zh3ft1.
The event is free, but opportunities to give will be offered throughout the evening. “We will be encouraging people to give the following day, on
ExtraGive Friday (Nov. 22) to double their impact,” explained Green. “We (also) want people to be able to give (at the open house).” Green pointed out that a number of sponsors, including MAKE/FILMS, the Old Candle Barn, and Paradise Custom Kitchens, are making this year’s homecoming possible. “Whether you have been involved since the very beginning in 1994 or have never heard of us before, there will be fun and exciting things for everyone,” said Green.

Church sets meal, Christmas Bazaar
The mission committee of the Leacock Presbyterian Church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, will serve a hot meal from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, in celebration of Thanksgiving. The menu will consist of Amish filling, which includes turkey; gravy; mashed potatoes; broccoli and cauliflower; cranberry sauce; fruit salad; and desserts.
The meal is free and will be served in the handicapped-accessible Smith Fellowship Hall. For more information, call the church at 717-687-6619.
In addition, the church is seeking crafters and vendors to rent tables at its Christmas Bazaar to be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. To rent a table, call 301-452-2215.
Run
By including the special activities, organizers are hoping to attract local families. “We are super excited about the 5K this year and really are looking forward to an incredible event,” said Stacey McNutt, CCCC events coordinator.
“With the addition of the Diaper Derby and some kid-friendly fun, we (hope) many families will continue to come out and enjoy a nice morning with us.”
Race-day registration will open at 8 a.m., and the 5K will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the fun run/walk at 9:15 a.m. “The 5K is a paved surface. It has lowgrade inclines and declines and goes through trees and the campground,” McNutt said. “It is on road and gravel, not on grass. (Runners and walkers) will begin at Pavilion 5, run through the campgrounds and come back and end where they started.”
First-, second- and thirdplace medals awarded will be to the top three male and female finishers for each age group and the overall male and female winners of the 5K.
Youngsters in strollers along with dogs on leashes are welcome to be a part of the fun run/walk, which will be less than 1 mile. “We will have a Pup Station, and everyone who registered their dog will get a bandana for their pet. We will have treats for the dogs and water,” said McNutt. All children age 12 and under in the fun run/walk will get a participation medal.
“We will also have a hot cocoa and coffee bar, doughnuts, soft pretzels, chips and other refreshments for all to enjoy, including our race tent for all our participants to enjoy some healthy snacks before and after the race,” McNutt added, noting all snacks will be provided free of charge.
Following the awards ceremony at 10:15 a.m., the Diaper Derby will begin at 10:30 a.m. The race is open to toddlers, who will be asked to crawl - not walk - along a cushioned race course.
“The rule that applies is that it’s just for crawlers,” McNutt said. “They will crawl along 10 yards of foam squares.” Prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place finishers of the race during a ceremony at 11 a.m. All
toddlers will receive a CCCC onesie and headband to wear during the race.
There will be separate registration fees for the 5K, the fun run/walk and the Diaper Derby. All participants in the 5K and fun run/walk will be given a T-shirt.
Church groups and others are being invited to take part in a FUN-Raiser by registering for the 5K as a team. “Our top team fundraiser will be announced as well as individual top fundraiser. There is still time to join the FUN-Raiser,” McNutt pointed out. “We close that on Nov. 16, so they have an additional week to raise funds and win prizes.”
McNutt noted that more than 300 people took part in last year’s event, which is being held at Hibernia for the third time. “People are walking for the mission and the cause,” said McNutt, noting, “Myriam (Ruager, CCCC executive director), will push an empty stroller with balloons to honor the number of babies that have been lost.”
Ruager will also talk about CCCC’s mission and where the funds are going. Proceeds from the event will support the agency’s ongoing mission to provide medical, educational and material support to women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. All services are 100% free. Families are supported physically, emotionally and financially through basic pregnancy care, parenting education, peer counseling, a homeless prevention program and community referrals. McNutt announced that the agency has recently purchased a home to further assist women in need.
“We now offer a residential housing program,” she said. “We have a brand-new house, and we just finished furnishing it. It’s a private address in Coatesville, and it can house five women that
are in need whether they are pregnant, have babies or multiples. We have enough space for five moms, but they must be clients of our program. We have this option so they can learn the life skills needed so they have a future out there. We want these moms to know there is potential for them.”
McNutt added that non-runners and walkers may also attend the event on Nov. 9 with their families. Also featured during the day will be a petting zoo, face painting and balloon animals. “It’s not just the run; we are adding things,” said McNutt. “We want people to come out, hear about the mission and learn why we do this every year and come out and enjoy a couple hours with the family and the kids.”
She added that attendees are asked to bring donations of diapers sizes 4, 5 and 6.

It is holiday time again, which means thoughts of family get-togethers and a perfect time to delve into family history.
Many cultures have special storytellers who study for years learning family or tribal history. Although today those stories could be written down, the cadence of vocal recollections adds so much to the telling.
But not all of us have that tradition. Fortunately, more records are being digitally filed for public use. We can’t all find family names in books or online, but that does not mean that our great-grandfather’s family failed to contribute to community history.
Family members may ask, “What was it that Grandmother once said about how the family crossed the mountains into Germany in the 1500s to escape persecution? “Or, “Is it true that, as an 8-year-old, Great-Grandmother saved her sister from being run over by a car?” There are

interesting stories but if not retold, who will remember them?
For those whose roots extend back more than one generation in Pennsylvania, Lancaster County or Salisbury Township, there are ways to research history. People may look into marriage records or obituaries of the generation before them online because they usually give parental names, which can lead a person back another generation. Was Grandpa a laborer, a schoolteacher or a doctor? Union or national and state professional associations may offer clues. Knowing the state in which Grandpa resided might narrow the search.
Check genealogy sites: Names are being added every day. If you checked a site one three years ago, try again today. An unknown family member may have already done some now-public genealogical research. If FindAGrave .com or Ancestry.com failed you when you typed in your grandfather’s surname as he spells it today, search

for other ways that name is spelled.
Can’t find the male line? Try researching the female line. For example, in September’s From The Attic column, a history of the Todd family was highlighted. Pamela Todd descended from an immigrant who stayed in Lancaster County. But Mary Todd Lincoln descended from that same man’s brother who had moved to Kentucky. And that genealogical record is extensive, so the connection was easy to find.
If an ancestor’s state,
county or township of residence is known, contact those local historical societies. This can sometimes bring surprising results. Thanks to astute sleuthing by an Historical Society of Salisbury Township researcher, it was discovered that a person who called the local society really meant to get in touch with the Salisbury Township Historical Society, located near Erie, where the lady found great success.
And never overlook seemingly unrelated findings.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. Election Day is Tuesday, November 5th. Call us to find your polling place: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely,
She said that the Chess Club is one of the library’s most popular programs. “Our Chess Club is for all ages. There are children as young as 8 or 9 and adults in their 70s and 80s. It is a wide-reaching program for us,” said Dopirak, noting that chess boards are provided. “The older people are teaching the younger children how to play. That is the best way to learn is from people who have been playing for a long time.”
“It’s very popular with the homeschooling groups,” she added. “The homeschool families come, and the parents will congregate and have conversations while their children are playing.”
Dopirak said that she wants people to be aware that the library is more than a place to borrow books. “I
am trying to add as much programming as possible because it is a great way to get people into the library who might not otherwise (visit),” she noted.
The library also offers a community garden, and free produce is offered throughout the summer on the library’s sharing table courtesy of the Parkesburg Borough Council. “The table was filled with peppers and tomatoes. It is a wonderful resource,” Dopirak said.
The library also has a book nook where patrons can purchase books and other materials for a nominal fee. A Little Free Library, where people can take a book or leave a book, is also located in front of the library building.

“I am (planning) to do a bunch of holiday-centered programs in November and December,” noted Dopirak.
She said that she has enjoyed meeting residents of Parkesburg and surrounding communities.
“The first couple of weeks I was here, everyone was saying they were glad there is a new director (after a hiatus) and ‘Glad you are here.’ It was very welcoming,” she said, adding that
she is able to offer programming, which not all library directors have an opportunity to do. “Being able to do programs …that really helps me get in with the patrons and meet everyone and learn more about the community itself. It is a beneficial part of this job.”
The Parkesburg Free Library is located at 105 West St., Parkesburg. Scouts to collect food donations
The Scouts of Chester County Council invite community members to participate in the annual Scouting for Food drive, an initiative aimed at supporting local food banks and addressing hunger in Chester County and northwestern Cecil County, Md.
This year, Scouts will take to the streets during the weekend of Nov. 9 to deliver door hangers that inform residents about the food drive and encourage participation.
The hangers will detail the types of nonperishable food items needed and highlight the importance of community support in combating food insecurity.
Scouts will return the following weekend to collect donations left on doorsteps. Residents are encouraged to contribute nonperishable items such as canned goods, pasta, rice, and other staple foods. Last year, the Scouts collected more than 30,000 pounds of food, and this
year the Scouts aim to surpass that total. The collected food will be distributed to local food banks. Monetary donations will also be accepted. GSS opens new facility to offer housing in Lancaster city
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Good Samaritan Services (GSS), a nonprofit organization that seeks to combat homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties, recently celebrated the opening of a facility in downtown Lancaster that will offer housing for single mothers and their children experiencing a crisis. On Oct. 15, GSS held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly renovated building on North Lime Street, and it welcomed its first clients at the end of October.
“It’s so essential to be able to offer short-term housing for people with nowhere to go,” said GSS’s marketing and communications manager, Rachel Shelley. “Lancaster city is one of the most densely populated areas of families that we serve, and we’re happy to be able to take this first step to helping more people in need.”
After the ceremony, attendees were invited to tour the new residential

facility. GSS had been using the building as an office space since 2017, and it served as a place for case managers to provide preventative services and meet with families at risk of eviction. The building was frequently empty between meetings, and GSS began thinking of ways it could better utilize the space. The organization began moving its offices out of the facility in October 2023, and the building was renovated to support transitional housing.

Another factor in GSS’ decision to offer housing in Lancaster city is the convenience and accessibility it offers residents. Clients who stay at the facility are closer to child care, have more job opportunities nearby and can easily access public transportation. “It’s a rich opportunity for people to access resources in the city that we haven’t been able to offer before,” Shelley said.
official opening of the North Lime Street building, GSS now offers short-term housing at all five of its locations, which include facilities in Phoenixville, Coatesville, Kennett Square and Ephrata. The Lancaster city location will provide safe housing for up to eight people in addition to case management services and resources. Although the facility will only serve single mothers and children for the time being, GSS plans to expand its services to assist all demographics over the next 10 years.
Although the North Lime Street location has officially opened its doors, GSS still hopes to complete two addition projects to add a laundry room and renovate a patio on the second level of the building. Shelley said the organization is seeking partnerships with businesses and other nonprofits, as well as volunteers to assist with the projects. “We would love to welcome people for tours to learn more,” added Shelley. The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) has announced a partnership with the Chester County Imagination Library; this organization is an affiliate of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free books for children from birth to age 5. Children who reside in Chester County may apply to have a free book delivered to their home each month.
Families can enroll online or in person at YGBW branches across the county. The goal of the program is to increase literacy levels for preschool-age children living in Chester County. Increasing childhood literacy is important to improving a child’s chance of graduating from high school, earning a living wage, being able to navigate the health care system, and more. Intervening at an early age is key to increasing literacy rates.
The Chester County Imagination Library is sponsored by Arts Holding Hands and Hearts (AHHAH) in partnership with the Justamere Foundation and the YGBW.
