Each year, a chili cook-off is sponsored by the Rotary Club of West Chester to benefit local charities as well as Rotary causes. This year, the 17th annual event took place on Oct. 13 in downtown West Chester. “The chili cook-off was started 17 years ago and is the major fundraiser for the Rotary Club of West Chester,” explained Rotary member Cathy Palmquist, who was named the West Chester club’s Rotarian of the Year for 2019. She noted that the club raises about $50,000 at the event after expenses. “We provide cook-off participants with tents, chairs, ladles, thermometers, trash bags, little sample cups, spoons, See Chili Cook-Off pg 2

HiSet Testing Center Opens At CareerLink Community Choir Prepares For “Messiah” By Francine Fulton

People without a high school diploma pursuing their High School Equivalency credential now have two testing options to choose from. Students may take the General Educational Development (GED) exam or the High School Equivalency Test (HiSet). Locally, both exams are offered by the Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) at the OIC testing center located in the CareerLink building, 479 Thomas Jones Way, Suite 500, Exton. HiSet testing hours are on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and GED testing hours are on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 pm. “The HiSet is another test that individuals can use to obtain their high school equivalency diploma. It is another option in addition to the GED test that most people are familiar with,” explained Maryann Stravous, director of workforce

education for the Chester County OIC. “The GED is only able to be taken as a computer-based test. The HiSet can be done on paper or the computer.” According to www.hiset.ets.org, the test was developed in 2014. “It came about a few years ago. It has taken a while to become known,” said Stravous. She compared the two tests to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the ACT. “SAT was the only thing you could take. Now, ACT is accepted as well, so there are two tests that colleges accept. This is a similar situation,” she said. Stravous explained that there are some slight differences between the GED and the HiSet. “In the GED test there are four sections - reading and language arts, which we call RLA; social studies; science; and math,” she noted. “HiSet has five sections because it breaks out the RLA to reading and writing separately. You do an essay on both tests. (The essay) is included in See HiSet Testing Center pg 3

“They get started before I get to go in, and it sounds so good,” Merleen Troutman commented as she prepared to check in singers who were arriving at Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC) for a rehearsal of the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah.” “I’m very excited (about the production). To me, it’s grand and big for the community. People traveling to come sing for us - I’m just really amazed at it,” she said. Led by Tom Berdos and accompanied on organ by his wife, Deborah Berdos, the rehearsals on Wednesday nights have been a positive experience for See Choir pg 2

Tom Berdos (far right) and a group of community members are rehearsing for a performance of the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah,” which will take place at Memorial UMC in Quarryville on Dec. 15. Attendance will be limited to 300 people, and tickets are available now.

everyone involved. Approximately 90 people from Lancaster and York counties have registered to sing in the production, which will take place on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m. at the church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville. “It’s been a great turnout from the community,” Tom said, sharing that he had hoped for 60 to 70 people. About 20 of the participants, including Troutman, are from Memorial’s choir. An additional 20 singers are expected to come from New Jersey, where the Berdoses previously lived and produced similar performances of “Messiah.” A full orchestra and professional soloists will also be part of the Dec. 15 production. “I think we’re doing well with it,” Tom said of rehearsing the music. “They’re working hard, and they’re having fun. We laugh at our mistakes and keep learning.” “It’s been very fun and exciting,” agreed John Rintz of Strasburg Township. A member of Mount Eden Lutheran Church, Rintz joined the group as a way of reconnecting with his musical side following a busy career and the recent death of his spouse. “The first two rehearsals were over my head, but now it’s good. Tom is such a great instructor,” Rintz remarked. Tom said he hopes to make “Messiah” performances an annual tradition like they had been at the churches he served in New Jersey. “We’d love for people to come and enjoy it and make it part of their Christmas,” he said. Rintz noted that he would like it to be part of his family’s Christmas tradition as well. “We have a lot of young children in my family. They’re excited to come see this,” he said, adding that it is gratifying

to have their support after years spent supporting them. “I’ve been to all their shows.” Strasburg resident Jenny Purvis sings with the West Chester Community Choir and has sung with church choirs, but this is her first time to be part of Handel’s “Messiah.” She is enjoying the experience. “I like to sing, (and) it’s a very friendly group. Everybody sings well,” Purvis commented. “Tom is very organized, very detailed,” she added, holding up a rehearsal sheet with the plans for the evening clearly marked and color coded. “(Tom) is amazing,” agreed Troutman, who has sung with Memorial’s choir since she was 13. “He knows what to ask and how to get sounds from you. I’ve enjoyed (his directing) very much, and Deborah is magnificent on the organ.” Purvis noted that her favorite selections from the portion that will be performed on Dec. 15 are “For Unto Us a Child is Born” and the “Hallelujah” chorus. “It’s one of the most beautiful compositions I’ve heard,” remarked Joshua Benkendorf. At age 16, Joshua is one of the youngest members of the “Messiah” choir. He and a friend come from York. “I love to sing; I’m in five choirs currently,” Joshua explained. “I like the experience (of singing the ‘Messiah’) and how holy it is.” Tom said he expects the performance to run for about 80 minutes. Tickets will be required for admission. As only 300 tickets will be sold, he recommended that people purchase them in advance by calling the ticket line at 717-7239001 or visiting http://quarryville. church. If not sold out, tickets will be available at the door.

napkins (and more),” Palmquist said. The chili cook-off is always held on the second Sunday of October on the streets of downtown West Chester, which are closed for the day. “We have four categories of competitors in the cook-off and give first-, second- and third-place awards in each category - businesses, restaurants, nonprofits and hometown cooks/volunteers,” said Palmquist. “We generally have between 55 and 70 competitors who prepare chili.” According to Palmquist, chili samples are tasted “in the blind” by a panel of five or so judges, mostly made up of local “celebrities,” such as the mayor or president of the local chamber of commerce, who select what they think is the best chili in each of the four categories. “In addition, each individual who purchases a wristband (can) eat as much chili as they want,” she said. “They also get five wooden nickels to put in a plastic pumpkin on each competitor’s table to vote for their favorite chili - the People’s Choice Award.” She noted that the chili cook-off has been expanded into a family event and now features a Kids Zone and other vendors that sell ice cream, funnel cakes, jewelry and T-shirts. Local charities are invited to be recipients of the Rotary’s grant money. “Each nonprofit fills out an application form, and we have a Rotary Community Philanthropic Committee (CPC) of about 15

members, and each person reads over all applications,” Palmquist explained. “We usually have about 30 applicants, and we usually choose from 11 to 13 to whom we give grants. The CPC reads the applicant’s request and reviews their 501(c)(3) letter and their latest financial statement or audit. We try to give to those whose requests make a real difference in the community.” In addition, the fundraiser supports Rotary Club projects that include providing warm coats for school children, distributing dictionaries for about 900 second-graders in 16 area schools, providing scholarships to graduating high school students, donating backpacks and school supplies to disadvantaged children in the West Chester Area School District, providing funds for the Hands Across the Sea reading project and partnering with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, World Health Organization and UNICEF to end polio. The Rotary Club also partners with the Global Medical Relief Fund and Shriners Hospital in support of children from Rwanda, Tanzania and other countries who have lost limbs due to war, disease and other factors. The children are brought to America to receive prosthetics for the lost limbs. To learn more, readers may visit www.westchesterrotary.us. United Way from pg 1 Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone and Terence Farrell recently presented a check for $10,000 to the United Way of Chester County to support the organization’s Mobile Home Reassessment project. The donated funds are part of the county’s annual appropriations to organizations and nonprofits and will be used by the United Way of Chester County to provide property tax reassessment support to all mobile home owners in the county. The Mobile Home Reassessment initiative, piloted by the United Way of Chester County in partnership with the Honey Brook Food Pantry, resulted in 177 successful mobile home assessment appeals with an average property assessment decrease of $970 a year. The funds presented by the county commissioners will allow for an expansion of the United Way

of Chester County’s program to reach an additional 200 homeowners. For more information about the United Way of Chester County’s Mobile Home Reassessment project, readers may contact Darshana Shyamsunder, manager of community impact at United Way of Chester County, at 610-429-9400. the RLA section for the GED and separate in the HiSet.” She also noted that the fee to take the HiSet is slightly lower than that of the GED. Students are encouraged to take the tests in sections on different days. “There are four parts to the GED, and it is recommended that they take one part at a time,” said Jackie Painter, testing center administrator and test proctor. “If they take two parts, it would be science and social studies because they are shorter.” Painter reported that about 20 to 25 people take the GED test at the CareerLink facility per month. As of mid-November, no one has registered to take the HiSet. “We have four computers that deliver the tests, so there will only be four people in the room, and there is a proctor in there,” explained Painter. “People taking the HiSet can have a calculator, and we provide it.” Stravous noted that some folks feel more comfortable taking a test on paper rather than online. “They can fill in multiple choice with pencil and paper,” she said. “It gives an option for people that don’t do well on a computer. We have (senior citizens) taking the test, and they feel uncomfortable using an online calculator or clicking on items with a mouse.” Those interested in taking the GED must register at www.myGED.com. To schedule a time for the HiSet, individuals can register at www.hiset.ets.org. In addition to offering the GED and now the HiSet, the OIC provides daily classes to help people prepare for the tests, as well as one-on-one tutoring for adults. A class schedule can be found at www.ccoic.org/adult-education. “Individuals can be tutored for a number of things - one of which is studying for the (tests),” Stravous pointed out, noting

In the Village of Intercourse, shop owners and other members of the community begin to string up lights and hang greenery tied with colorful ribbons. The holidays will soon be here, and the merchants of Intercourse especially look forward to sharing the joy of Christmas with visitors from near and far. Each year when December arrives, the village marks the occasion with special events and activities. Starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, children may pick up a map at the Best Western Intercourse Village Inn, 3610 E. Newport Road. The hunt, which invites participants to solve riddles and win prizes, will be held all day Friday and Saturday. The Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL), 31 Center St., Intercourse, will once again be the scene of several events that kick off the village holiday season. At 5 p.m. on Dec. 6, there will be a holiday craft time for children, followed by refreshments, available by donation. At 5:30 p.m., Santa will arrive at the library courtesy of the Intercourse Fire Company. The annual tree

counselors. A specially programmed early learning computer in English and Spanish will be purchased with grant money by the West Chester Public Library, according to Dow, executive director. At the Salvation Army, a small computer room is planned for those needing help finding jobs, said Maria. Some funds will also be used for clothing and prescriptions for the Salvation Army’s clients, she added. Schwab, a volunteer, explained that the LLL, which places children’s books in laundromats, will use the grant to purchase books in Spanish and books focusing on multicultural children. The ARC of Chester County will use its grant to help purchase wheelchair-accessible vehicles to provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to get out in the community, explained Meikrantz, executive director, who noted that the outing will also provide respite for caregivers. Wideman-Scott, executive director of the DVCCC, said the grant will be used to replace some of the old playground equipment at a shelter location. Welsh, a board member at the Chester County Family Academy, explained that the grant will be used in music and other programs for children from kindergarten through second grade who come from challenging backgrounds. Sullivan, executive director of the senior center, said the grant will be used to continue to provide nutrition education for seniors. In addition, the center provides emergency food boxes for seniors that are filled with nonperishable items. Raspanti, a volunteer with Chester County Children Inc., said the grant will help provide summer camp and after-school programs for as many as 70 children.

throughout the year, and the committee is always trying to come up with new ideas and ways to make the parade even more enjoyable for all. “We meet year-round after a break in January,” said Scibek. “We do try to tweak it every year. We look for new costumed characters that the kids would like. The kids love (the parade).” In the event of inclement weather in the forecast, a decision will be made on Thursday, Dec. 5, about the status of the parade. Cancellations will be listed at www.coatesvillechristmasparade.com and on the Coatesville Christmas Parade Inc. Representatives of a number of Paradise organizations have joined together for Christmas in Paradise on Dec. 7. The Paradise Township Lions Club, Leacock Presbyterian Church, and Paradise Leaman Place Fire Company will all host activities during the day. In the evening, the community Christmas tree will be lit at the Paradise Township Building. By Ann Mead Ash

A variety of activities will help to kick off the holiday season in Paradise on Saturday, Dec. 7. The Paradise Township Lions Club will hold its annual Christmas Market in the Together Community Center. Leacock Presbyterian Church has scheduled Trees, Treats ’n’ Treasures. The Paradise Leaman Place Fire Company will hold a vendor fair, and the Paradise Township tree lighting ceremony will be held at the township building. The Christmas Market will be held at the community center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. More than 30 vendors selling items including original art, photographs, candles, handmade soap, and crafts will fill the gymnasium, along with representatives of Mary Kay, Thirty-One Bags, Tupperware, and Scentsy. At 10:30 a.m., a special visitor from the North Pole will arrive to greet those in attendance. The event is co-chaired by Mary Alice High and Crystal Gregg. Door prizes, donated by vendors, will be given away. Those who bring canned good donations for The Factory food pantry or glasses for the Lions Club will receive extra tickets. Winners will have their choice of door prizes while they last. Food items that will be available for purchase will include coffee, egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn soup, grilled cheese, pork barbecue, hot dogs, baked goods, and soda. The Leacock Church bazaar, a tradition in the area for more than 40 years, will take place at the church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. As in the past, the event will feature a variety of items for purchase, including ornaments, cards, jewelry, and handcrafted items. Homemade treats, such as baked goods and sweets will be offered, along with the church’s popular peanut butter bonbons in milk and dark chocolate flavors. The bazaar will also feature fresh greens made into arrangements, along with holiday décor for inside and outside the home. Themed baskets are a hallmark of the bazaar. In previous years, baskets included a coffee lovers basket, a learn-to-knit basket, a children’s book basket, and more. Along with the bazaar, the Holiday Café will be open, and both breakfast and lunch items will be available for purchase. Among the breakfast items will be fresh doughnuts, and lunch foods will feature homemade soups and hot dogs. A baked

goods table will also be available. Funds raised by the bazaar will help support community mission projects of the church, such as the Leacock Community Meal, The Factory Ministries, the Welsh Mountain Medical and Dental Center, Water Street Mission, and Church World Service. Readers who would like more information about the Leacock event may visit www.leacockpres.org. Paula Knosp of the Paradise Leaman Place Fire Company, 57 Hershey Ave., Paradise, said the vendor fair at the fire hall will feature more than 20 vendors, including representatives of home-based businesses and those selling craft items. The vendor fair will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Coffee and breakfast items will be offered for purchase, along with hot dogs, hamburgers, and walking tacos. Prizes and giveaways at the event will be donated by vendors. All funds raised by the show will be donated to the fire company’s building fund. At 7 p.m., area residents are invited to gather at the Paradise Township Building, 2 Township Drive, Paradise, for Christmas carols, refreshments, and a visit from a special guest. The event will culminate with the lighting of the community Christmas tree.
