At 89 years of age, Albert Gans is not just a member of the Oxford Area Senior Center (OASC); he is a longtime teacher there, leading art classes every Wednesday from 8 to 11:15 a.m. “I’ve been doing this at least 20 years at the Oxford Senior Center, maybe longer,” Gans said. Gans was an electronic engineer until he retired at the age of 65 and had time to turn his attention to fine art. He credits his pursuit of teaching art to the late Amy Beeman, whom he met through the Octorara Art Association, where she was president for several years. See Art Classes pg 7

I have been in it once before, and I really wanted to go for the role of Gaston,” he said. “He’s the big guy, and I’m 6 foot 9 inches and 240 pounds-plus. He’s got a big old deep voice like me. The music fits me very well.” Knettler has a strong performing background, but this is his first time with ACT. “I love doing community theater shows. It’s a way to meet new friends, to get involved in the community, and do something fun,” he said. “It gives me a break from the day-to-day grind. Murphy worked with ACT several years ago when she was a high school student in a production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” “This is the first time I’ve ever played the lead for them, so it’s exciting,” she said. “I love the family-oriented vibe of it. I also love that it is loved by so many people. around 250 years. The site features a 16-foot steel water wheel, which is powered by Colonial-era wooden gears and was used to produce cornmeal and flour. The site was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2005 and is maintained by the Mill at Anselma Preservation and Educational Trust, a nonprofit organization that formed in 1998. The mill was constructed in 1747 by Samuel Lightfoot. It changed ownership through the years, and its last owner through 1982, Oliver Collins, ran a grist mill, a saw mill, a cider press, a metal working shop, a barbershop and a lawnmower repair shop at the location, all powered by the same water wheel. The family also operated the Anselma Post Office. At one time, the Reading Railroad ran through the property on its way to Philadelphia. “The railroad was put in in 1871,” said Dave Rollenhagen, who is the site’s miller. “It opened up this area significantly. Farmers had a market for their products (by selling goods to city residents). Plus, they could bring freight, like coal and lumber, out here, and there was passenger service. It was a busy area at one time.” On Aug. 2, the tour will take place at the Phoenix Iron Company, 2 N. Main St., Phoenixville. Attendees will be able to learn

Money-Saving Travel Tips For Retirees Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal. According to a 2014 study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling. Many retirees are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting

just how much older adults like to get out and ex plore the world. Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement. Seniors are encouraged to take advantage of age-related discounts. Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer

direct discounts to customers age 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Discounts on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller ex penses can add up to big savings. Travel agencies should not be overlooked. W hile many prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort

to find the most affordable trips, it is important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, and those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or partner with travel agencies. Travel agencies have access to the latest information, and many specialize in certain

countries, knowing all the attractions visitors want to see. Travel agencies may offer packages that include admissions to popular attractions, which can be more affordable than planning a trip a la carte. Traveling as part of a group is also an option. Group travel may not appeal to everyone, but it should appeal to older, budget-conscious travelers. Retirees who are uncomfortable driving at home will likely be even less comfortable driving in foreign countries where

the rules of the road are not the same. Traveling in groups, whether it is with a retirement community, religious organization, or another program, can save travelers substantial amounts of money. Many hotels and tourist attractions offer steep discounts for group tours, which can even be arranged through travel agencies. A hidden benefit of signing up for a group tour is the chance to meet new people and develop new relationships with fellow globetrotters.

Art Classes from pg 1 “ We got to be really good friends. She was teaching at about six senior centers at the time. She got busy doing a mural and asked if I would help her. She gave me four senior centers to (teach art lessons) at the time - Coatesville, Oxford, Downingtown and Kennett Square,” Gans explained. “When she finished the mural, she said, ‘Why don’t you just stay?’ so I kept the job. “I give her credit,” he continued. “Through her friendship and efforts, I became a full-time artist teaching at the senior centers and opening an art studio.” Gans studied at the Philadelphia College of Art and had his own studio in a barn on his property, where he gave lessons. Currently, Gans focuses on teaching at the OASC, but he keeps busy with his own work as well and had a display at the Oxford Arts Alliance Annex earlier this year. His work as an artist covers a full spectrum of subjects and materials. “I prefer certain mediums for the subject I’m doing. I like oil for portraits, I like watercolor for painting outside landscapes, I like acrylic for abstracts because it dries so fast,” he explained, adding that he has also done sculpture, wood carving and mosaics. Teaching, however, is one of his primary interests. “I love it. We not only have an art class, (but) we have a social club,” Gans said. “These people here are such

good friends. It’s a wonderful thing to have friends.” Gans’ students are just as enthusiastic. “I can’t say enough good things about him,” said Nancy Devine as she worked on a watercolor. “I just always liked art. I was always interested, but I never had anyone teach me like Al has. When you come here, you not only get a teacher; you get a friend.” “We love Al; he helps us all,” Evelyn Munson agreed. “He’s kind and he’s helpful. I never painted a thing until I retired at 65.” Diane Rickards has been taking classes at the OASC for more than seven years. “If it wasn’t for Al, I would have come one or two weeks and quit,” she said. “He’s wonderful. He has patience, and he helps all of us. He’s just the best artist. We feel very relaxed; there’s no pressure.” Art classes at the OASC cost a nominal fee per session. The class is open to area residents age 60 and over. Art classes are just one of many offerings at the center, located at 12 E. Locust St., Oxford. Other regular activities include crafts such as making greeting cards, tech classes, stretching, Zumba and more. For more information, readers may contact the center at 610-932-5244 or oxsrctr@zoom internet.net or visit www.oxford seniors.org.

VisionCorps Foundation has received a $1,000 grant from the board of directors of the MAXIMUS Foundation. The funds will be used to provide free vision screenings for nearly 9,000 preschool children. Since 1994, VisionCorps’ KidSight program has provided free vision screenings for more than 100,000 preschool children. KidSight also offers an educational program that teaches children about eye health and safety. VisionCorps’ Youth Enrichment program, which impacts youths ages 6 to 18, provides

recreational, socialization, and other daily living activities to help them achieve independence. Since being established in 1926, VisionCorps has been helping to restore autonomy and independence for southeastern Pennsylvania residents who are blind or vision impaired. Identity Theft Tips Posted Identity theft is a serious concern that affects millions of people. The 2017 Identity Fraud Study, released by Javelin Strategy and Research, found that 15.4 million consumers in the United States were affected by identity theft of some form in 2016. In those instances, $16 billion was stolen. Protecting one’s identity is not as complicated as it may seem, and it can safeguard consumers against fraud and theft. People should password protect all smartphones and other digital devices. Many are used to transmit

sensitive information and may store passwords and other data that connects to financial institutions. People should never click on links in unsolicited emails. Such links may contain malware or computer viruses. People should not provide Social Security numbers, birth dates, or other personal information to unsolicited callers, no matter how official they may sound. The same password or PIN should not be used on multiple sites. Passwords should vary, and a

combination of numbers, symbols, and uppercase letters should be used to make it more difficult for thieves to decode. People should not keep all credit cards or important identification cards in a wallet at all times. Private records and statements should be shredded or destroyed. People should monitor their credit report. Consumers can receive a free credit report from the three major credit agencies free of charge each year. Any inconsistencies should be addressed and reported promptly.

Conservation Award Available A prestigious award that celebrates voluntary conservation by farmland owners is coming to Pennsylvania. This year, Pennsylvania will become the 14th state to present the Leopold Conservation Award in partnership with the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and Heinz Endowments. Sand County Foundation, a voice for private land conservation, presents the Leopold Conservation Award to farmers, ranchers, and foresters for extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation on private working lands. The inaugural award will be presented at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January 2019. The recipient will receive $10,000 and a crystal award depicting Aldo Leopold. Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the award recognizes those who inspire others with their dedication to land, water, and wildlife habitat management on private, working land. The award brings together agriculture, government, environmental organizations, industry, and academia to advance the cause of private

lands conservation. Pennsylvania Farm Bureau welcomes this opportunity to promote the inaugural Leopold Conservation Award in the state as another occasion to recognize and reward farmers, who are going above and beyond in adopting best management practices on their farms to protect the environment, while maintaining the future economic viability of their farming operations. Nominations for the first Pennsylvania Leopold Conservation Award are now being accepted. Nominations may be submitted on behalf of a landowner, or landowners may nominate themselves. The application can be found at https://sandcounty foundation.org/uploads/ Pennsylvania-2018-CFN.pdf. Applications must be postmarked by Wednesday, Aug. 15, and mailed to Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, c/o Joel Rotz, P.O. Box 8736, Camp Hill, PA 170018736. Summer Travel Safety Tips Posted

! E L A S D A O L K C U TR

Anyone planning to travel this summer may want to consider taking precautions to protect their health. Patient First has posted health-related vacation tips. Travelers should ask their doctor about health issues and health care in the regions they plan to visit. Vaccinations or certain medications may be necessary. Travelers should research the area’s medical facilities, including hospitals, urgent care centers, and pharmacies. Readers should also remember to take any prescription and nonprescription medication they might need. They should pack the medicine in a carry-on bag if they fly so they do not lose the medicine if their luggage gets lost. While traveling, people should wash their hands frequently to protect against viruses and bacteria. When traveling by car, people should wear seat belts and take frequent breaks to help drivers stay alert behind the wheel and give everyone a chance to stretch their muscles. Vacationers should not forget about sun protection. Before going outside, they should protect their skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays. People should always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF, even when it is cloudy. Sunscreen should be applied 15 to 20 minutes before one leaves home. People should reapply sunscreen at least every two hours and after swimming. Wide-brimmed hats help to shade the neck and face, but they do not offer complete protection. People should use sunscreen on these sensitive skin areas. Travelers should also wear lightweight sun-protective clothing. Long sleeves and long pants will help protect skin. Travelers should wear sunglasses that block UV rays and also take advantage of shade whenever possible. They should keep in mind the sun’s UV rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Travelers should carry any important medical history with them, along with the name, address and phone number of an emergency contact. For more information, readers may visit www.patientfirst. com/blog.
