Final Friday Festivities To Feature Theme Of “Dog Days Of Summer” By Francine Fulton
“Dog Days of Summer” will be the theme of the Final Friday program to be held on Aug. 31 from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Parkesburg. In addition to enjoying food, shopping and entertainment, visitors will be able to meet with representatives from local pet rescues, which will have pets on hand that are available for adoption. Final Friday is a street fair hosted by the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC) on the last Friday of each month from April through October. Activities take place along the 200 block of Main Street in Parkesburg.
Special guests at the August event will include Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, LaMancha Animal Rescue and the Animal House Project, which runs the Chester County Pet Food Pantry. “Each one (of the rescues) is bringing animals (available) for adoption,” said PAC member Jenny Alexander, who noted that “Dog Days of Summer” was also the Final Friday theme last August. “People can meet them and then go through the adoption process. They want to make sure they go to good home. “Last year there was a little beagle, and one of our vendors fell in love with the dog and a week later adopted her,” she added. See Final Friday pg 3
The Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC) will present a “Dog Days of Summer” Final Friday event on Aug. 31 in downtown Parkesburg. Inviting people to the event are (from left) Mary Bauer from Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, PAC member Jenny Alexander and Colleen Sgarra, a foster mom from Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, with Serena, who is currently available for adoption.

Each bag will contain a dog or cat treat and a pet toy. All donations will benefit the Animal House Project, whose mission is to keep pets at home and out of shelters by providing donated pet food and pet care services to families in financial need. During Final Friday, the street will be closed to vehicular traffic so that local residents can enjoy visiting local businesses and shopping from vendors. Also featured will be food trucks, a Kids’ Zone and live music. For August, in keeping with the theme, there will be personalized dog trainers on hand, as well as Heidi Mottin and her dog, Reed. Mottin, author of
“Rescuing Reed: The Little Dog Who Could,” will offer autographed copies of the book. “We have local artists and jewelry makers and all kinds of vendors come in from surrounding areas,” said Alexander. “We have churches that will offer kids’ crafts. This month, Octorara field hockey will set up cones and children will be able to practice field hockey.” Alexander noted that there are generally 30 to 40 vendors and five food trucks. “We switch it up so there are different kinds of food, including desserts,” she added. PAC plans and organizes each Final Friday in conjunction with the borough of Parkesburg. “One of the reasons we decided to do (Final Friday) was to bring awareness of all the great things we have in Parkesburg,” said Alexander. “It’s nice to see people from surrounding communities come in.” For more information about Final Friday,

Sheriff’s Office from pg 1 The Chester County Sheriff’s Office recently welcomed three new deputies. Arthur B. Adams, Asim O. John, and Sean M. Marasco each took the oath during a swearing-in ceremony held in Courtroom One of the Chester County Justice Center. Adams, a native of Chester County, has been working for several years as a security officer, most recently at Lankenau Hospital. He also worked previously as a correctional officer at Chester County Prison. After graduating from Downingtown West High School, Adams decided that his longtime interest in helping others made law enforcement a logical career choice. Although his family has a strong history of military service, Adams was the first to pursue police work. He received his Act 120 certification from the Delaware County Community College Police Academy in 2013. When he is not working, Adams enjoys spending time with his family as well as playing golf. John grew up in Oxford, and after
graduating from Oxford Area High School, he found a niche for his mechanical talents in the aerospace industry, where he built parts for private jets and helicopters. About five years, he became interested in changing gears. A close friend, former Chester County Deputy Sheriff Kevin Brough, urged John to consider law enforcement, especially the Sheriff’s Office. John graduated from the Delaware County Community College Police Academy in 2016 and began working for the Lincoln University Police Department. In his spare time, John enjoys spending time with his family. He and his wife have three children, ranging in age from 7 months to 11 years, and a fourth child is on the way. John can also often be found making repairs or improvements to cars or exercising his passion for motorcycles. Although Marasco was born in Wilmington, Del., his family moved to Chester County when he was an infant. He considers himself a Coatesville native since

he grew up in that area. He experienced strong military and law-enforcement influences from multiple family members, but he did not decide to follow that lead until after earning a bachelor’s degree in international business from Widener University. Since then, Marasco obtained a real estate license, traveled around the world, and joined the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, where he has served for the past five years. He also attended the Reading Police Academy, graduating in 2015. Marasco and his wife, Jessica, have two sons: 3-year-old Mason and 4month-old Kelley. In his free time, Marasco enjoys a wide variety of outdoor activities, including camping, kayaking, snowboarding and scuba diving. LaMancha Animal Rescue in Unionville recently received a donation of $2,460 as a result of an event conceived and managed by a Pennsylvania College of Technology student. Victoria A. Sosar of Berwick is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on sport and event management. As part of an internship this summer with Beale Manor in Parkesburg, a special events venue in Chester County, Sosar was given the opportunity to plan and hold an event of her own. Sosar planned a Sip and Drool Festival to benefit LaMancha Animal Rescue in Unionville. The family-friendly event included activities for both children and pets. Sosar also lined up several food vendors, 20 craft and product vendors, a variety of gift baskets that were given out as prizes, musical entertainment and a special presentation by the Chester County K-9 Unit. The event not only raised funds for LaMancha Animal Rescue, but also promoted pet adoption. The animal rescue brought adoptable dogs to the event, and four LaMancha dogs were adopted as a result of the festival. Sosar’s planning began well before her summer internship officially commenced in May. She sought vendors, a disc jockey, and other entertainment. She also developed a logo and began a Facebook campaign months before the July 14 event. During the spring semester, when she began formulating her plans, Sosar was enrolled in a Professional Event Planning course taught by chef Frank M. Suchwala, associate professor of hospitality management/culinary arts. The course teaches students to manage successful events, beginning with comprehensive planning that encompasses resources, site specifications and audience accommodations. LaMancha rescues and finds homes for horses, dogs, cats, goats and the occasional exotic animal. More information is available at www.lamanchaanimalrescue.org. Instructions: 1 - Place 10 to 12 bamboo skewers in water to cover at least 30 minutes before grilling. Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill or preheat a gas grill to medium-high. 2 - If using the basting sauce, in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin, and sugar over medium-low heat and cook, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved and the liquid just begins to turn syrupy, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside in a small bowl. 3 - Drain the skewers. Thread the chicken pieces alternately with the onion pieces onto the skewers, using about 3 pieces of chicken and 2 pieces of onion for each skewer. As each skewer is ready, place on a plate. Brush the chicken and onion pieces lightly on all sides with the oil. 4 - The grilling goes quickly, so set up a workstation next to the grill before beginning: the plate holding the skewers, the bowl of sauce and a basting brush and/or the salt, and tongs for turning the skewers. If using the basting sauce, either dip each skewer in the sauce or brush the sauce on the skewers and then place directly over the heat. Grill the skewers, turning 3 or 4 times and basting with additional sauce, until the chicken is cooked through and the onions are scorched around the edges, about 5 minutes total. If the sauce appears to be burning at any point, move the skewers to a cooler part of the grill, or reduce the heat if using a gas grill. If using salt instead of the basting sauce, place the skewers directly over the heat and grill, turning 3 or 4 times, until cooked through, about 5 minutes total. Sprinkle both sides of each skewer with salt and remove from the grill. Serve the skewers piping hot.

As part of an effort to promote fellowship and sharing among members of local Lutheran congregations, a multi-church picnic will be held at Living God Lutheran Church (LGLC) in Honey Brook on Sunday, Aug. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. Participating in the picnic will be congregation members from LGLC, as well as the following Lutheran churches: Messiah of Downingtown, Good Shepherd of Coatesville, St. Paul’s of Lionville and Community of Love of Oxford. Area Lutherans are invited to attend the free event to meet other Lutherans in the area and to enjoy a potluck meal, music, children’s games and a time of fellowship. All those attending will also be able to walk LGLC’s nature trail, located on the church property. According to LGLC worship leader Sue Fessenbecker, one of the event organizers, the joint effort began earlier this year when members of local churches that were being led by interim pastors met to discuss the issues of finding a permanent pastor. “Lutherans have a lengthy process (for appointing a pastor),” she explained, noting that pastors in search of a new appointment are matched with churches who are seeking a pastor based on their profiles. Candidates are then interviewed and voted on by the congregation. “(Getting together) was a joint effort between Messiah and Living God Lutheran churches, which were both without pastors and decided to meet and join resources,” Fessenbecker continued. “We all struggle with ... how long the process takes, and we get discouraged. We try to keep everyone upbeat. We know it will happen in God’s time, and we are here to support each other.” The churches’ first joint activity was in March, when they took part in a private screening of “I Can Only Imagine” at a local movie theater. Fessenbecker said that last year, LGLC members attended a community worship service at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in West Brandywine. “That’s kind of what we wanted to do, but it evolved into a fellowship picnic for us to get to know each other,” she noted, adding that LGLC reached out to other nearby Lutheran churches when planning the picnic. “We really enjoyed worshipping with Catholics and Presbyterians, Episcopalians and others (at the community service at St. Peter’s),” she added. “With all that’s

happening in the world, it was nice to be united as a Christian community.” The upcoming picnic will be held outdoors, weather permitting. Members of the various churches are providing the food. “We will have a hymn sing, and each of the interim pastors (and pastors) will do an introduction of their congregation,” said Fessenbecker. “We will have an icebreaker event for people to get to know other congregations. We will also have a scavenger hunt along the nature trail.” LGLC expects between 100 and 125
