Avon Grove Charter School Dedicates New Addition By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
A new wing featuring classrooms and office space at the Avon Grove Charter School’s Kemblesville campus has been completed on time and within budget. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held on Aug. 23 with many of the people who made the project possible in attendance. The new 40,000-square-foot, twostory addition blends seamlessly to the building, adding seven third-grade classrooms; a music room; a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) room; administrative offices; a conference room; and a storage room for students’ records. The project also included an addition to the parking lot and new playground space. “The purpose of this amazing project
is so that third grade can come and move back over here from the main campus,” said Kristen Bishop, CEO and head of school. “We also have a business office we were renting in Jennersville. Now we can save the rental cost, because we have a new business office and administrative space that was very much needed.” The charter school had a $5.9 million budget for the project and completed the expansion within that amount. The construction project, which broke ground last October, was also on time, so third-graders could begin the school year in their new classrooms on opening day, Aug. 27. “We started planning three years ago, along with working on a bond issue,” financial officer Donna Archer explained. Bike Chester County Offers Group Rides Word UP Ministries To Start Sunday Worship By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Group rides on Thursday evenings and a recent children’s bike rodeo have been keeping members of Bike Chester County busy in the Atglen area. Bike Chester County is a volunteerbased organization that focuses on bike advocacy. The group is managed under the larger seven-county organization, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. Each Thursday at 6 p.m. through Oct. 4, a Bike Chester County group will meet at the Atglen Borough Hall, 120 Main St., Atglen, to enjoy a ride of about 10 miles on area roads. “On a night like tonight, when it’s nice and cool and bright, it’s just beautiful,” Jan Johnson said as the group prepared to head out on Aug. 23. “I moved to the area 37 years ago, and I’ve been riding all those years. I often come out in this direction and ride, and it’s been fun.” See Bike Chester County pg 3

David Kim Performance To Benefit “Messiah” Sing-Along W hen violinist David Kim performs at the Calvin and Janet High Fine Art Center at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m., the event will benefit another musical presentation - the “Messiah” Sing-Along - which has been held each spring and winter in
David Kim
Lancaster and Chester counties for more than 20 years. The “Messiah” Sing-Along is a musical event that includes no rehearsals and features volunteer singers and musicians. According to conductor Clair Leaman, the event is unique because people can just show up and sing. The piece is treated as a performance, but Leaman noted that sometimes people in the audience sing along too. The Lancaster County Sing-Along has been held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. The Chester County presentation has been held at Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1121 Octorara Trail, Parkesburg. The next Chester County Sing-Along will be held on Friday, Dec. 28, and the next Lancaster County Sing-Along will be held on Friday, April 26, 2019.
Kim, who was named concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1999, has been playing the violin since age 3. He began studying under Dorothy DeLay at the age of 8, and he holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School. He recently appeared as concertmaster of the All-Star Orchestra on the Public Broadcasting System, at the Brahms Festival, and with the Fairbanks Symphony in Alaska. He is soloist each season with the Philadelphia Orchestra. As a teacher, Kim is founder and artistic director of the annual David Kim Orchestral Institute of Cairn University of Philadelphia. He also serves as professor of violin studies at Cairn. Kim lives near Philadelphia. Readers may learn more about him at www.davidkimviolin.com.
About a year ago, Leaman was discussing the future of the sing-along with supporter JM Herr. “As we move forward, we will (need a legacy),” explained Leaman. “(Herr) is friends with David Kim,” said Leaman. Herr offered to ask Kim to perform a benefit concert for the sing-along. “Kim said he would love to do it,” said Leaman. Among the selections Kim will perform at the Sept. 18 concert will be “Soli Deo Gloria” and Massenet’s “Meditation” from “Thais,” which is Kim’s signature piece. His selections will also include “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “Banjo and Fiddle,” and “Carmen Fantasy.” Tickets to Kim’s concert are available at http://messiahsing along.com, and purchasers may select seats from those
available. Seats in the balcony will be sold at a discount, and discounts will be offered for senior citizens, military
personnel, and students. Any tickets remaining on the day of the concert will be available at the door.

most fun for the youngsters was the obstacle course, which was constructed with the purpose of teaching safety skills. “It was basically like a safety obstacle course for kids,” said Amanda Lozinak, a ride organizer for Bike Chester County. Bike Chester County also has weekly rides starting in Exton and Phoenixville. “We welcome everybody. We have a beginner ride, and we have an intermediate ride. Beginner rides are for people who just want to try it. Intermediate rides normally go about 15 to 30 miles,” Lozinak said. “We usually get a good following in Phoenixville and Exton of intermediate riders who come out. We go around 12 to 15 miles per hour. They’re for the regular

There are no fees or requirements for participation in the rides other than a usable bicycle and a safety helmet. A bicycle light is recommended. “I started leading these rides for Bike Chester County to get people out who are beginners, to get them ... comfortable riding on the road,” Johnson said. “We go about 10 miles, but we can add miles on if we want to. We usually ride along Octorara Creek because it’s cool and it’s shady and it’s beautiful and it’s flat.” Bike Chester County also held a bike rodeo in Atglen on Aug. 25. The organizers offered bike checks and taught children how to check their own bikes. They also helped with helmet fitting and taught hand signals. The

It’s a good opportunity to try some road riding out and get used to the hand signals,” Lozinak said. “It’s nicer to ride with a group instead of by yourself all the time.” The ultimate goal of Bike Chester County is to advocate for riders and support trails for cyclists’ use. The group has helped do that by meeting with planning commissions and local government when there are bicycle-related issues. Group members conducted study rides to gather information on routes and are available to explain the needs of riders on roads.

To make it possible to use the location as a church, a Sadsbury Township zoning ordinance had to be changed. That took four months to accomplish with the support of the township supervisors, and now there is an occupancy permit for the church. Meanwhile, for the past year and a half, Word UP has been holding monthly “Soup, Sandwich and Talk” events at the Gap Fire Hall on the last Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. During these gatherings, everyone is invited to enjoy food and fellowship, with an opportunity to hear God’s Word. The “Soup, Sandwich and Talk” evening on Thursday, Sept. 27, will be held at Gap Fire Hall, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap, and then the events will relocate to Dutchland for the October session and onward. Mowday noted that when the gathering moves to Dutchland in October, there will be no formal sermon format. Rather, the
“talk” portion of the evening will include a group discussion. Mowday draws inspiration for Word UP Community Ministries from a Bible passage brought to his attention more than 20 years ago by Ann and Jonas Beiler when he started his ministry with Victory Chapel. The passage, Isaiah 43:19, states “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.” “About three years ago, the Holy Spirit reminded me of this Scripture, that God wants to do a new thing. For me, and for Word UP, I believe this is the new thing,” Mowday said. Mowday will be the pastor, but he will be taking a different title lead follower. “Christ will be the Shepherd, I’m going to be the lead follower and other folks that come will be the followers,” he said. The focus of the church is on service. “We want to serve God by serving others. We’re going to stay focused on that and look for
opportunities to do that in Gap and the surrounding community,” Mowday said. Putting together a new church is a big task. “There are a lot of people to thank. First and foremost to thank is my Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, for all that He’s done in my life over the years,” Mowday said. “I have a great wife, Verna, that supports me and encourages me in
ministry and two great couples, Lloyd and Gail Murphy and Rodney and Stephanie Smoker, who are on the board supporting this whole vision.” “It has been a while working on getting this together,” Lloyd added. “We had many meetings to see what we can do and how we can do it.” To prepare for the new services,
there will be a volunteer training day on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 9 a.m. at the Dutchland building. Those interested in assisting as ushers, greeters, parking attendants or café staff, as well as in other positions, are encouraged to attend the training session and become a part of the ministry. Attendees do not have to contact Mowday in advance to

The Avon Grove Ministerium held a Prayer Walk on Aug. 21. Groups representing the Avon Grove Ministerium churches and para-church organizations took part. After gathering for instructions and prayer, participants departed for the schools for which they had committed to pray. Some participants prayed around the buildings, and others walked through the schools while praying. The schools included Avon Grove High School, Avon Grove Middle School, Avon Grove Intermediate School, Penn London Elementary School, Avon Grove Charter School, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary School, and the Nazarene Academy. Participants in the Prayer Walk ranged in age from kindergartners to senior citizens. Students prayed for their schools and teachers. Parents and grandparents walked with their children in prayer. Additional
members of the community prayed for schools, teachers and other staff members, buildings, and administrators. Some teachers, staff members, and administrators invited participants to pray for them, their classrooms, and the upcoming school year. Other staff members and teachers asked for prayers for more personal joys and concerns, such as illnesses, family members, grief and travel. The Prayer Walk was originally organized by Marge Pickle more than a decade ago. Her commitment to praying for the local schools inspired the Avon Grove Ministerium to continue the event. This year’s walk was organized by Pastor Monica, lead pastor of West Grove United Methodist Church. The Avon Grove Ministerium invites community members to continue to pray for the local schools, students, teachers, and staff members throughout the year.

People of all ages are welcome to participate in the annual 5K run and 1-mile Walk for Life being presented on Saturday, Sept. 15, by Chester County Women’s Services (CCWS), a nonprofit pregnancy care medical center. Events will take place in Downingtown’s Kerr Park, Kardon Park and along the Struble Trail. Registration will open at 8 a.m. at Kerr Park, 1 Park Lane, Downingtown, located off Pennsylvania Avenue. Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:40 a.m. “One of our board members will speak about what CCWS is, and our board president will bless us in a prayer,” explained Dana Faragaso, race organizer. Participants will then walk a short distance along Pennsylvania Avenue and across its intersection with Route 282 to the entrance of the Struble Trail in Kardon Park. “One of our volunteers will lead the way with the American flag,” Faragaso said, noting that the race will start at the head of the Struble Trail. The 5K run and 1-mile walk will begin at 9 a.m. “It is a paved trail,” Faragaso explained. “The turnaround (locations) will be marked for the 1-mile walk and 5K run.” Following the running and walking event, Family Fun Day will take place in Kerr Park from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Events will include a Kids’ Run for children age 12 and under. “Everyone is welcome to come back to Kerr Park,” noted Faragaso. “The kids will run around a loop in the open field area around the park and earn a medal.” Family Fun Day will also include free children’s games, face painting and story time. Children will receive a “passport” and will check off the activities they complete. “Once the kids complete the activities on their ‘passport’ by getting each one stamped, they
will receive tickets to win prizes,” Faragaso said. “They can also pick from a treasure box of prizes as well.” Attendees are encouraged to bring a baby item such as diapers, wipes or clothing to donate to CCWS to benefit clients in need. Proceeds from the event will support CCWS, a nondenominational ministry that has been serving county residents as a pregnancy resource center since 1985. It has offices at 1028 E. Lincoln Highway in Coatesville, at 645 E. Baltimore Pike in Kennett Square and at 139 W. Market St. in West Chester. CCWS offers medical services, including pregnancy tests, prenatal vitamins and limited ultrasounds, which provide a new mother with an opportunity to see her baby and confirm pregnancy viability and the expected due date. All services are free and confidential. The center also offers educational classes for expecting parents. Those who take classes at the center are eligible to receive items from a parenting closet that contains maternity clothes, baby clothes, baby food, diapers, wipes and formula. Classes are offered in both English and Spanish. Also offered are peer counseling, a homeless prevention program and community referrals. For more information about the 5K run and 1-mile walk and to register, readers may visit www.runsignup.com/CCWS. There will separate registration fees for adults age 18 and over and students ages 13 to 17. Children age 12 and under may participate for free. For more information about CCWS, readers may visit www.ccwsmedical.org or contact Myriam Ruager at 610-383-0930. More Than A Sightseeing Tour Trip Helps Deepen Biblical Understanding By Ann Mead Ash
In June 1976, Theresa Newell made her first trip to Israel. “The first day I was there, we were taken to the Western Wall,” recalled Newell. “When I walked up to the wall to pray, God just met me there, and I said, ‘Father, I am here,’ and I heard, ‘… and you’ll be back.’” Newell, who is director of communications for CMJ USA, has now led more than 50 trips to Israel. When she returned to the United States after her first trip, she began learning Hebrew. “That was a big adventure,” she noted. Her ability to use the language will be employed again, when Newell leads a group to Israel from Sunday, Sept. 8, to Friday, Sept. 20, 2019. Using the Shoresh Study Tours program, the group will travel to the coast, desert, and mountains, stopping at places where biblical events are believed to have occurred to help the travelers dig
deeper into the Scriptures. The tour will include both Old and New Testament sites and information about the history of modern Israel. The focus of the study during the trip is on Christ and a better understanding of His ministry. Newell’s second trip to Israel occurred in 1979, when she was asked to take a group of students from a Christian school back to Israel. She stayed for a month teaching students, and when she returned, others began asking her to take them to Israel. “Every year I began taking people back,” said Newell, who added that in the 1980s, she realized that study programs for Israel visitors were sparse. “There was some formal (education), but for people going for just a few weeks, the content was lacking,” she noted. Around that same time, Newell was introduced to the international director of CMJ, which stands for Church’s Ministry Among Jewish People. The ministry was founded in 1809 in London. Newell was asked to open an American office in Fairfax, Va. She
and other members of the ministry began asking the question “How do we get more biblical content into a travel program for laypeople?” “(We wanted) a program for people who wanted to deepen their relationship with Jesus and understand the relationship between Old and New Testament and understand Jesus in the Second Temple period,” explained Newell. “That’s how we came to develop the Shoresh program.” Newell explained that “Shoresh” is Hebrew for “root.” “(It’s a study program about) the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and seeing Jesus in His timeframe and understanding that as we walk the land,” said Newell. She uses her knowledge of Hebrew to bring out the nuances in the Bible and bring deeper meaning to the text. “I use Hebrew to help people understand, (because) when we hear what the people in (Jesus’) day heard, it helps us to be better disciples. A clearer understanding of the Bible is what Shoresh is all about.” After leading so many tours of
Israel, Newell noted that she has been struck by both the differences and similarities between bands of participants. “Each group is unique, and each bonds in a wonderful way,” she said. “They all come back saying they are surprised by how much (more) information (they now have about) the Bible they have been studying all these years, and that tells me we are achieving what we set out to do … to help people see Jesus more clearly and understand the Bible more clearly.” Before moving to New Holland, Newell was on staff at the Trinity School for Ministry in Pittsburgh, where she earned master’s and doctoral ministry degrees. While on staff at the school, she created the Israel travel study program. Readers who would like to learn more about the September 2019 trip to Israel may email theresa @cmj-usa.org or call 412-6806843. bright and cheery, with flexible seating. The STEM classroom features a Lego theme, including Lego-covered walls. Outside, the playground includes a unique feature - a bicycle track. “I think we’re the only school in Chester County that has a bike path for children to ride in recess. We’re really excited about it,” Bishop said. Relocation of the third grade to Kemblesville has allowed the charter school to increase the grade’s enrollment to 180 students. Numbers are also increasing for the charter school, with 1,865 students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade this school year, up from 1,640 in 2017-18.
“We’re excited about the ability for the school to provide more options for the students, the ability to expand out the high school by moving the third grade back here to Kemblesville,” said school board facilities committee chair John Lupfer. “The parents feel much better as their kids are going from second to third grade knowing that their kids are going to be here in a nice school with children close to their own age. It gives them another year before they go into the high school building.” For more information about Avon Grove Charter School, readers may visit www.agchar ter.org or www.facebook.com/ AvonGroveCharterSchool.
The Kemblesville campus had been dedicated to kindergarten and first and second grades, while the main campus on State Road, a former high school building, housed the remaining grades for the charter school. This year, third-grade students have been welcomed into new spaces designed with them in mind. The classrooms are
