Arts And Crafts Show To Benefit Outreach Projects By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Ovations at Elk View will host its annual arts and crafts show on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place in the site’s clubhouse, located at 285 Henrickson Lane, West Grove. Proceeds will go to the senior community’s Project Outreach, which provides support to local charities. The shopping opportunity will have a mix of returning favorite crafters as well as some new artists with work to display and sell. The wide selection of items available will include original art, photography, painted eggs, crocheted items, fabric crafts, pottery, felted handbags, embroidery, pillows, jewelry, wood turning and more. In addition to the arts and crafts, there will be a sale of baked goods, a chance to win prizes through a random
drawing and a silent auction. Chaired by Jimi-Lee Weber and Denise Malone, the arts and crafts show was started six years ago and is a function of the Ovations at Elk View Social Committee. Ovations at Elk View is an active adult community in West Grove for residents age 55 and over. Originally, the vendors selling items for the arts and crafts show were the talented residents of the community, including Malone, who makes aprons, decorative pillows, adult bibs, and children’s bibs, and Weber, who is a basket maker and wood carver. “ When we started, it was just residents in the show, but it’s grown,” Malone noted. Volunteers from the Social Committee totally redo the clubhouse for the event. “(Vendors are set up) in every See Arts And Crafts Show pg 2
Inviting the community to the upcoming arts and crafts show at the Ovations at Elk View are (from left) organizers Eileen Kuc and Jimi-Lee Weber; Annamary Padilla, director of The Bridge Compassionate Ministry Center; and organizers Ginny Bryson and Linda Kane.

Initially, it represented the first step in the application process to join the Fugitive Apprehension Unit before it was opened up to all deputies. Woulfe explained that the test accomplishes more than just an assessment of physical prowess. It also measures teamwork, dedication, and determination, qualities that come in handy when deputies attempt to apprehend fleeing suspects or respond quickly to someone in distress. The instructors - Woulfe, Deputy Sheriff Steven Price, Deputy Sheriff Enrique Garcia, and Cpl. Daniel Strathy - took the test a week earlier so that they could oversee this year’s challenge and assist with traffic control during the run. Deputies who successfully complete the challenge receive

An uncommon sight greeted early-bird commuters in downtown West Chester on Oct. 10: more than a dozen deputy sheriffs on the run. Receiving some illumination from a Sheriff ’s Office truck with its lights flashing, the group was in the final stage of the 2018 Superior Fitness Challenge. The challenge began at 5 a.m. with 100 push-ups followed by 100 situps. Afterward, the deputies donned 30 pounds of equipment, including large shields, before they each dragged a 150-pound dummy up and down a long hallway, jumped over a 5.5-foot wall, carried a battering ram about a block, and then ascended and descended a nine-story staircase while wearing weighted vests. The ordeal preceded a fiveminute break. By 6:45 a.m., the deputies started the finale, a 2.5mile formation run around the borough of West Chester. The Chester County commissioners proclaimed Hispanic Heritage Month in Chester County at a recent public Sunshine Meeting. The commissioners also recognized the work of La Comunidad Hispana, presenting a check for $25,000 to LeeAnn Riloff, development director for the organization. The funds granted to La Comunidad are part of the county’s annual appropriations to organizations and nonprofits. La Comunidad will use its funds to expand dental services provided to the increasing number of residents that the nonprofit serves. The commissioners also announced the addition of Spanish translation to key web pages on the county’s website, www.chesco.org. The commissioners plan to increase the number of pages offered in Spanish. Pages that have been translated cover many of Chester County’s Human Services departments, the health department, courts, prison, probation, parks, the Prothonotary’s Office, the Register of Wills office, and services provided through the Treasurer’s Office. The home page of
provides a link to all web pages translated into Spanish, and on each page available for translation, an Español icon is displayed. Miguel Alban provided the translation services for the county. According to the commissioners’ proclamation for Hispanic Heritage Month, Latino-Hispanics are the largest ethnic minority group in the United States and the fastest growing minority community in Pennsylvania and in Chester County.

Sports Eye Safety Tips Posted tection. Monocular athletes, those with only one eye that sees well, should ask their eye doctor what sports they may safely play. Athletes should not buy eye protection without lenses. Only lensed protectors are recommended for sports use. Athletes should make sure the lenses either stay in place or pop outward in the event of an accident. Lenses that pop in against the eyes may cause serious injury. Fogging of the lenses can be a problem when a person is active. Some eye protection options are available with anti-fog coating. Others have side vents for additional ventilation. Shoppers should try on different types to determine which is most comfortable for them. Shoppers should check an eye protector’s packaging to see if the item has been tested for sports use and if it is made of polycarbonate material. Polycarbonate eye protection is the most impact resistant.

New annual data from Prevent Blindness shows that more than 33,000 Americans were treated for sportsrelated eye injuries last year. Eye injuries from any sport may include infection, corneal abrasions, fracture of the eye socket, swollen or detached retinas or a traumatic cataract. Eye injuries from water sports may include eye infections and irritations, and scratches or trauma from other swimmers. Prevent Blindness has posted tips on buying sports eye protectors. Shoppers should always consult an eye care professional to get the best eye protection for their sport and lifestyle. Sports eye protection should be padded or cushioned along the brow and bridge of the nose. Padding will prevent the eye guards from cutting the skin. Athletes should try on eye protectors to determine if they are the right size. The strap should be adjusted so it is not too tight or too loose. Athletes should consult their eye care professional to ensure eye protectors have a comfortable, safe fit. Prevent Blindness is offering printed materials to assist eye care professionals in educating consumers on the importance of eye safety during sports. Stage actor Lanny Millette is making his directorial debut with the latest Promise Players production, “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase,” which will be performed nine times between Friday, Oct. 26, and Sunday, Nov. 4, at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. “It is definitely challenging to be the director. There’s a lot more time involved - I’ve been busy recruiting sound and lighting technicians - and now I’m responsible for all aspects of the play,” Millette remarked. Millette started preparing for the production by reading through the script by Pat Cook an estimated 12 times even before auditions were scheduled. “I’m enjoying (the directorial process),” Millette said. “If you pick the right actors, it comes together on its own.” He noted that the actors were nearly ready to go off-book by the second week in October. “The actors I have are giving life to their characters. I just see it getting better and better by show time,” he added. “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase” is a comedy drama involving Uncle George Plunkett (Wayne Rhinier) and his family members. The clan patriarch has invited the family to spend a weekend in his rustic cabin, where he surprises them by reading his will. The biggest surprise, however, is that a suitcase holding $480,000 is apparently hidden somewhere on the property. The family members react with pettiness, slander, and greed before being confronted with their bad behavior, but in a way that Millette hopes audience will find humorous. “It was so much fun to watch my wife read it,” Millette related. “She was laughing until she was crying, just from reading the script. Audiences will be blessed by it.” Promise Players is a Christian theater company, and Millette noted that while this play is not overtly spiritual, it does have a spiritual lesson. “Matthew 6:19-21 encapsulates the meaning of the play: It’s important to put your treasures in the eternal, (not on earth where they can be destroyed or stolen).” One of the practical ways to live out that lesson is to show
Promise Players will present the comedic play “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase” at Lampeter Church of the Brethren nine times between Oct. 26 and Nov. 4. kindness to others. With the proceeds from each production, Promise Players gives a sizeable donation to a nonprofit organization that is doing good in a way that is related to the respective show. This time, the beneficiary will be the Lancaster-based A Week Away Foundation, which was founded by the late Caleb Walker in order to provide people with life-threatening illnesses a feeling of normalcy and hope. One of the getaway options is to a rural area. Millette pointed out that the play is located in a cabin, and there are some mental health overtones as well.
“We think (A Week Away) is doing a great thing,” he remarked. “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 26; Saturday, Oct. 27; Thursday, Nov. 1; Friday, Nov. 2; and Saturday, Nov. 3. Matinee performances will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 27; Sunday, Oct. 28; Nov. 3; and Nov. 4. Seats may be reserved by visiting www.promiseplayers.org or calling the church at 717-464-2050 on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Separate donations have been suggested for adults and for children age 12 and under. Children’s eye health is just as important as other aspects of their physical and mental well-being. According to a recent report from the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness, vision plays an important role in a child’s physical, cognitive, and social development, and visual functioning is a strong predictor of academic performance in school-aged children. While there are certain risk factors that can affect eye health, come the autumn, fall sports and Halloween are two areas where parents may have to extend extra caution to protect their children’s vision. Fortunately, there are many things parents can do to prevent visual and other injuries from affecting their children. A few simple precautionary measures can make this Halloween safe and fun. Parents should choose Halloween masks and accessories that do not impair the ability to see clearly and keep children’s vision unobstructed. Costumes that do not have masks, wigs, or accessories that impede the child’s ability to see should be chosen. Hats and scarves should be tied down, so they do not slip down over the eyes. Parents should exercise caution with cosmetics. Warnings on Halloween makeup should be read to see which products are safe to use on the face and around the eyes and which are not. Only hypoallergenic makeup should be used, and it should be removed carefully
when Halloween is done so it will not get in the eyes. Only safe cosmetic contact lenses should be purchased. Parents should speak with an eye professional to purchase colored or novelty lenses. Improperly controlled contact lenses can cause eye injuries like sensitivity to light and bacterial infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says decorative lenses purchased without a prescription may not fit properly, leaving eyes more susceptible to scratches on the outer layer of the eye. Decorative lenses also may contribute to ulcers, or open sores, on the cornea, which is the clear covering over the front of the eye. Discuss the safety of various lenses with your eye doctor and go over the proper handling of contact lenses. Children should be encouraged to trick-or-treat in daylight. Visibility is better during daylight hours, and sunlight makes youngsters less vulnerable to tripping over obstacles in their paths. Particularly for younger children, parents should avoid hard, plastic swords, staffs, and other objects that can poke the eyes or cause bodily injury. Parents are encouraged to opt for bendable foam choices instead. Children should be made to be as visible as possible. Parents can use reflective tape, glow sticks, and other tools to make children more visible to drivers and pedestrians.
