Avon Grove Library Creates Reading Room By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Libraries can become busy places, but the Avon Grove Library has added a quiet refuge - the Ringler Reading Room - where people can sit and read in comfort away from the hustle and bustle. The bright, sunlit room, furnished in the manner of a comfortable living room, is the perfect place to enjoy reading. Partitioned from the main library by a glass wall and door, visitors can enjoy the space while remaining connected to the events going on in the library. Those who visit the room will find the latest copies of area newspapers to peruse, as well as a small assortment of books. People may also sit with their laptops or look through books from the library’s shelves.

The room was opened with a dedication ceremony on Sept. 25. It is dedicated to the memory of Kim L. Ringler, a former director of the Avon Grove Library. Ringler managed the library for 22 years, retiring in 2014. She passed away in 2016, at which time several of her friends made donations to the library in her memory. That funding made the construction of the new reading room possible. “She was quite a beloved figure, especially among the staff. We thought we really should use that money for something special, and a staff member suggested a reading room,” library director Lori A. Schwabenbauer said. “ We’re very happy to be able to preserve her legacy here in the building she worked so hard to help build and in the library she did so much to advance.” See Reading Room pg 2

Craft Fair, Bazaar from pg 1 Our Lady of Consolation Parish will host its 28th annual Christmas Craft Fair and Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Schneider Parish Center, 2995 Cemetery Road, Parkesburg. Admission is free and open to the public. The craft fair will include more than 50 area artisans, crafters and vendors. In addition to a wide variety of handmade goods, homemade foods and baked goods will be available for purchase throughout the day. There will also be an opportunity for visitors to enter drawings for themed gift baskets and to win door prizes. The event will also include a Scholastic Book Fair, face painting and other children’s activities. Santa will greet children and be available for pictures from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The staff and families at Our Lady of Consolation Early Learning Center (OLCELC) have organized the annual event for more than a decade. OLC-ELC is located in the lower level of the Schneider Parish

Center and offers preschool programs for children ages 2 to 5. OLC-ELC offers a variety of extendedday options for enrolled children, including before- and after-care, along with enrichment opportunities throughout the school year. All proceeds from the craft fair will benefit OLC-ELC. More information about the Early Learning Center is available at www.olcelc.com. For more information about the craft fair and bazaar, readers may email olccraftfair@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/olcelcCraftFair. Pictured on front: Students at Our Lady of Consolation Early Learning Center invite the public to the 28th annual Christmas Craft Fair and Bazaar, to be held on Nov. 17 at the Schneider Parish Center in Parkesburg.

Memorial donations were supplemented by donations from Ringler’s family, the Avon Grove Rotary Club and the Friends of the Avon Grove Library. Donors were recognized at the dedication ceremony and on a plaque in the reading room. A spot for the reading room was created by removing outdated books and taking out some of the shelves. “The library is pretty much all one space. Unfortunately, there’s not any real quiet spaces in this room. Sometimes in the back of the library, you can hear people talking in the front, even though we try to keep our voices down,” Schwabenbauer said. “In the back of the

library, there’s a window seat and we have one or two armchairs, but we didn’t have a place for people to sit comfortably.” The result of remedying those issues is a comfortable room for library patrons. “We wanted something cozy and homey looking,” Schwabenbauer said. “It’s not for tutoring or meetings or anything like that. It’s a quiet space. It’s supposed to be like an oasis.” Avon Grove Library is located at 117 Rosehill Ave., West Grove. Thanksgiving Service from pg 1 different churches and organizations that want to worship together, Lighthouse Youth Center (LYC) director Buzz Tyson said. “It’s a nice gathering for us to fellowship with the community. Each year, the service moves to a different location. Terry noted that he enjoys the opportunity to worship with friends from other churches and to visit another church. “It is always a lot of fun to see friends that I don’t get to see on a Sunday morning,

and to hear a sampling of the musical talent that we have in so many of our churches, he said. Those who attend are asked to bring a nonperishable food item. These donations, along with funds from the offering, will go toward organizations helping to alleviate food needs in the area, including the LYC. “While many remember their less-fortunate neighbors this time of year, the need is still great, said Terry. “The food we

collect and funds we receive in the offering will be very helpful to these organizations this time of the year. Some items particularly needed at the LYC include taco seasoning packets, barbecue sauce, macaroni and cheese, ketchup, ranch dressing and individualsize snacks such as crackers, fruit cup and granola bars. COMMUNITYCOURIER - Oxford Edition Pictured on front: Community Warehouse Project of Chester County board memApproved furniture can be dropped off on bers and volunteers, including the third Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. members of the Rotary Club of

One-Year Anniversary from pg 1

The Community Warehouse Project (CWP) of Chester County, a nonprofit organization that collects and redistributes donated furniture and household goods to people in need, is celebrating its one-year anniversary. Looking back to the project’s formation in November 2017, Glenda Brion, executive director, reports that the effort has been a great success. “We have served about 150 families this year, which is amazing,” she said. “They came for beds, sofas, coffee tables and dressers. I knew the need was tremendous, but I wasn’t sure how much we would be able to accomplish with all volunteers, but it’s working.” Brion explained that individuals and families that are seeking items are referred to the agency by Chester County social service organizations such as the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County; Children, Youth and Families; and Friends Association for Care and Protection of Children. CWP maintains a large warehouse in the Downingtown area in a space that is provided free of charge by the E. Kahn Development Corporation. CWP works in partnership with the Rotary Club of West Chester. West Chester University students are also involved in the program. “Students from the West Chester University Center for Community Solutions volunteer and designed our logo,” Brion said. “The Friars’ Society out of West Chester University are young men who come and help us move furniture and deliver donations.” For those in need of furniture, a case manager, social worker or sponsor must complete a form on their behalf at www.communitywarehouseproject.com. The client and the case manager then come to pick out the furniture at the warehouse. Items needed by CWP include living room furniture, tables, lamps, nightstands, bunk beds and linens, as well as housewares, such as dishes, plates, silverware, pots and pans. Donations must be clean and in good condition. Items that CWP will not accept include clothing, televisions and large appliances. Brion said that the organization is particularly in need of single beds with bed frames. “We never have enough single beds,” she said. “I know there are a lot of people out there who would be willing to buy a bed for people.” Those who have furniture to donate are asked to contact the agency in advance. “There is a place on the website for people who want to donate furniture,” explained Brion. “You include a picture so that way we know what we are getting.”

Frank Stearns (left) and Joe Morrissey are just two of the volunteers who help move furniture and mattresses for the Community Warehouse Project of Chester County. The organization is seeking additional volunteers and furniture donations.

to 2 p.m. The next scheduled furniture dropoff event will be on Nov. 17. Brion encourages real estate agents to let homeowners who are moving know about the option of donating unwanted furniture to CWP. “Realtors have reached out to their clients who are downsizing,” she explained. “People take what they need to move onto the next place, and we will get the rest of the furniture. It gives them a place to put it, and all (donations) are put to good use.” Brion said that as the effort grows, so does the need for volunteers. “I can always use help in the warehouse straightening, rearranging things and labeling things,” she noted. She would also love to have someone donate or loan a delivery truck to the organization. “Someone with a box truck who is willing to drive the truck once a month would be nice, or if we had a truck available, I could find a volunteer to drive the truck,” she said. “Right now, we have to rent a truck, but the Friars do the heavy lifting. It’s a real challenge for us to keep up with deliveries.” For more information about CWP, readers may call 484-473-4360, visit www.communitywarehouseproject.com or search for “Community Warehouse Project of Chester County” on Facebook.

SCCEMS Medic 94 operates independently from an ambulance service. When an emergency call comes in, 911 operators follow a set protocol and dispatch the closest ambulance and, if necessary, Medic 94 as well. Only about half of the ambulance calls will also be Medic 94 calls. SCCEMS Medic 94, based at Jennersville Hospital and Avon Grove Fire Company, does not transport patients - that is done by ambulance. What it does is provide additional care beyond what the ambulance emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are authorized to do. “Think of us as the emergency room on wheels, said Bob Hotchkiss, SCCEMS Medic 94 CEO and emergency medical services (EMS) chief. “The paramedics bring advanced life support, medications, IVs, airway equipment and advanced monitoring equipment. We only go out on life-threatening calls. Oct. 15 was the official birthday for SCCEMS Medic 94, which was originally established as a joint venture between the former Southern Chester County Medical Center, the St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, the former St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lancaster and the local volunteer ambulance services in Oxford, West Grove, Avondale and Kennett Square. Until the advent of SCCEMS Medic 94, if advanced life support care was needed, paramedic units had to travel from West Chester or Coatesville to reach patients with their lifesaving care. The distance involved ate up valuable time that is important in treating a patient with a life-threatening condition. Cutting that response time by utilizing units in the region has improved outcomes, according to Hotchkiss. SCCEMS Medic 94 serves more than 75,000 people in a 225-square mile region encompassing 18 municipalities, with a fleet of four licensed paramedic

units and 18 employees. Last year, SCCEMS Medic 94 paramedics responded to more than 2,700 dispatch calls, working closely with local ambulance services as well as Jennersville Hospital and other area hospitals. SCCEMS Medic 94 also provides community outreach and wellness programs and is an accredited Pennsylvania Department of Health Continuing Education Training Institute. Hotchkiss said the goals on each call are to stabilize the patient before leaving the scene, provide the right pre-hospital care and ensure a smooth transition from paramedic care to hospital care. In 2017, SCCEMS Medic 94 was recognized as the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council (PEHSC) EMS Service of the Year. SCCEMS Medic 94 is a nonprofit organization with a communitybased board of directors, composed of community members and representatives from the local ambulance services in Oxford, West Grove and Avondale. As a nonprofit organization, it does bill insurance companies for patient care, but the amount it receives covers an average of just 60 percent of actual costs. To make up the difference, SCCEMS Medic 94 depends on contributions from the municipalities it serves and donations from the public. “The community supports us in two ways - one is a fund drive, said Hotchkiss, adding that the second way the community supports SCCEMS Medic 94 is by knowing basic first aid practices. “We’re the professionals who come out when you dial 911. What the general public does is as important as what we do - that they know CPR and that they know how to control life-threatening bleeding. These are things the public can do that make a tremendous difference. For more information about SCCEMS Medic 94, readers may visit www.sccems.org or www.face book.com/Medic94SCCEMS.

Contact Lens Safety Tips Posted selling contact lenses without having a valid prescription. Prevent Blindness, a nonprofit eye health organization, recommends several tips for contact lens care. Individuals should always visit an eye doctor to be fitted for contact lenses before use. Contact lenses should always be worn under the supervision of an eye doctor. Before handling contact lenses, hands should be washed with soap and water, then rinsed and dried with a lint-free towel. Contact with water should be minimized, including removing lenses before going swimming or in a hot tub.

Individuals should never sleep in contact lenses unless authorized by an eye doctor, as this may increase the risk of infection, according to a new report from the CDC. Contact lenses should not be rinsed with or stored in water (tap or sterile water). Contact lenses should be worn and replaced according to the schedule prescribed by an eye care professional. The contact lens case should be kept clean and replaced regularly, at least every three months. Old solution should not be reused or “topped off” in the lens case. A cracked or damaged lens case should not be used. Lens cases can be a source of contamination and infection. Individuals should never trade or share lenses. Contact lenses should be removed, if the eyes become red, irritated, or painful. If vision issues continue, individuals should contact an eye doctor immediately. For more information on contact lens safety, readers may call 800-331-2020 or visit www.preventblindness.org/wearing -contact-lenses.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 45 million people in the United States wear contact lenses. Many consumers may not be aware that contact lenses are medical devices and are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, the FDA states that contact lenses are not over-the-counter (OTC) devices and companies that sell them as such are misbranding the device and violating Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations by

Earlier this year, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) unveiled a new alcohol education campaign called “Know When, Know How.” This campaign teaches parents how to start a conversation with their children about the dangers of underage drinking. In an effort to continue the dialogue about the dangers of underage drinking, the PLCB is encouraging students from across the commonwealth to participate in the 27th annual Alcohol Awareness Poster Contest. The contest is open to all Pennsylvania students in kindergarten through 12th grade, including those who are homeschooled or in private or parochial schools. Students may enter through their schools, clubs, or Scout troops, or they may enter individually. Entries must feature a clear no-use message about underage drinking and may be created using any artistic medium. Students are encouraged to use positive messages and images, such as the benefits of being alcoholfree or alternatives to underage drinking. Each year, approximately 50 posters are selected by a panel of judges for recognition. Each artist who creates a selected poster will be notified of his or her accomplishment and invited to attend a recognition ceremony in Harrisburg in April 2019, which is Alcohol Awareness Month. Several students will receive $50, and one student from each grade will receive $25. Some of the winning designs may be reproduced in various formats and distributed across Pennsylvania. Entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, Nov. 16. For additional information about submission dates, guidelines, and prizes, readers may review the contest guidelines and entry form available at www.lcb.pa.gov under Education, then Poster Contest. Questions about the contest may be directed to 717-772-1432 or RA-LB Education@pa.gov. The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board works to educate the public about the dangers of underage and dangerous drinking through a variety of avenues, including the poster contest, a free annual alcohol educational conference, the creation and distribution of a wide range of educational materials, and training and technical assistance for organizations working to address the issues related to irresponsible consumption. The PLCB is again providing a sample lesson plan, which educators are encouraged to use in guiding and teaching students about the dangers of underage drinking.
