Innovations Challenge Set Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) are reminding high school students in grades nine to 12 to submit their entries for PennDOT’s Innovations Challenge. The deadline for submission is Monday, Dec. 31. This year’s challenge asks students to look at innovative methods, aside from laws and educational campaigns, that can be developed in the next five to 10 years to get drivers to slow down in work zones. The Innovations Challenge aims to not only help

students explore real transportation challenges that PennDOT is facing, but also open their minds to the possibility of working for PennDOT after graduation. Regional winners will be selected and invited to compete in Harrisburg next year for the statewide championship. The statewide winning team will be awarded $1,500 from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Traffic Services Association (ATSSA) to be divided among team members. For complete Innovations Challenge details, readers may visit www.penndot.gov/innovation.

as during the summer. UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn, are the strongest in the summer. However, UVB rays can burn and damage skin year-round, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces such as snow or ice. Snow reflects up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV light, so the rays hit twice, further increasing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging. UVA rays remain constant

throughout the year and can penetrate through clouds and fog. UVA rays can also penetrate glass, so it is still possible to damage skin while spending a bright winter day indoors. The first line of defense against this sun damage is clothing. Covering up is easier in the winter, because it is cold, but the face, head, and neck tend to remain exposed year-round, and this is

where most skin cancers occur. People should not forget their UVblocking sunglasses and broadbrimmed hat before heading out. Sunglasses protect the eyes while also fighting snow glare, and a hat keeps the head warm while keeping UV rays from damaging the scalp. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher should be applied daily to all exposed skin. People should make sure to cover often-missed spots like the tops of their ears, around the eyes, and near the hairline. Individuals should consider choosing a moisturizing sunscreen with ingredients like lanolin or glycerin to combat dry winter skin. Finally, people should try to avoid the peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and seek shade when they can. For more information, readers may visit www.skincancer.org.

It is easy to associate vigilant sun protection with summertime, when the sun is shining intensely. However, sun protection is necessary every day, regardless of the weather or time of year. Even when it is cold or overcast, UV rays that cause skin aging and skin cancer are reaching the skin. In the right winter weather conditions, people can sustain sun damage just as easily

should be wrapped in a plastic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season. Pre-cut trees should be cut again before leaving the lot. Pre-cut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they will need to make it through the season when they get home. To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, the tree should be placed in water the moment it gets home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the water in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses trees likely will not need their stands filled more than once per day. The tree should be placed away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.

Natural Christmas tree aficionados love the authenticity such trees provide during the holiday season. Natural trees also provide a unique aroma that can make holiday celebrations feel more homey. A few simple strategies can help holiday revelers ensure their Christmas trees make it through the holiday season unscathed. W hen purchasing natural trees, holiday celebrants, especially those who like to buy their trees in early December, may be concerned about keeping their trees fresh throughout the holiday season. Several tips can help trees last until the final present is unwrapped and the last of the egg nog has been consumed. The first tip is to buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, people should cut their own trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so throughout the season. If it is not possible to cut one’s own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided. The Tree Care Industry Association advises consumers to protect their Christmas trees as they transport them home. The tree

Arbor Day Foundation Offers Gift Opportunities Returning for the ninth season in a row, Give-A-Tree cards from the Arbor Day Foundation offer a holiday giving opportunity with conservation benefits that will endure for generations. Again this year, Give-A-Tree cards can be purchased individually and with customized text for a set price. Also, purchasing the Arbor Day Foundation’s coffee helps preserve rain forests in Central and South America. The foundation’s coffee, a part of the Rain Forest Rescue program, is shadegrown under the canopy of Latin American rain forests. The foundation’s Trees in Celebration program allows the giver to honor loved ones while supporting conservation efforts. For each dollar donated, one tree is planted in a high-need forest, and recipients are given a certificate showing them where the trees were planted. In addition, with foundation membership, recipients will be sent 10 free trees, which will be shipped at the right time of year for planting. Membership levels vary and begin with a set minimum contribution. For more information, readers may visit www.arborday.org.

Students Enjoy Holiday Feast

Donation Drive Posted The Salvation Army will benefit from an annual holiday donation drive being organized by Sheetz For the Kidz. During the month of December, customers can donate at checkout at all Sheetz store locations. One hundred percent of customer donations will go directly to support the children. Each of the 582 stores will support 16 children from its local community by partnering with The Salvation Army to receive wish lists from local families. Employees will volunteer their time to shop for items, wrap items and host holiday parties for the children and their families. At the parties, Santa will greet the children and present them with new toys, along with clothes and other items meeting basic needs. The children and their families will enjoy food, crafts, games and opportunities to take pictures with Santa. In addition to donating during checkout, readers may support the program by purchasing specially marked items at Sheetz, with a portion of proceeds supporting the holiday donation drive; shopping on AmazonSmile at https://smile.amazon.com and selecting Sheetz For the Kidz as the charity they would like to support; donating at www. sheetzforthekidz.org; or purchasing Sheetz Art Project swag at www.sheetzshop.com.

Sixth-grade students at Avon Grove Intermediate School show their gratitude while enjoying a lunchtime Thanksgiving Feast. They include (from left) Gabrielle Furline, Gabrielle DiCampli, Savannah Johnson, Gretchen Levandusky, Chandler Williams, and Olivia Dougherty. Avon Grove School District recently provided a lunchtime Thanksgiving feast for students and staff at all schools. Cafeteria workers spent weeks planning for the Nov. 15 event, an annual tradition at Avon Grove, requesting assistance from teachers, team leaders, and senior volunteers. The morning meal preparation included cooking, portioning and packaging the feast so it was ready to be served during each grade’s scheduled lunch period. Students and staff enjoyed turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and green beans with all the fixings, along with

apple pie and ice cream for dessert. This year, Avon Grove started a Senior Citizen Volunteer Tax Relief Program, which already has more than 50 members. Many of the program’s volunteers were present at each school to assist with the feast. The day was especially exciting for Avon Grove students since it coincided with the first snowfall of the season, causing an early dismissal from school. Everyone from teachers to support staff assisted to ensure that all students could enjoy the feast before going home for the day.

Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations,” Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet.” She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time.
