St. Luke’s posts holiday bazaar

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 22 S. Sixth St., Lebanon, will host its annual holiday bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 23, the same day as the Lebanon Holiday Parade. The bazaar will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A lunch of hot sandwiches and soups will be available in the fellowship hall on the lower level of the parish hall. The Bazaar Marketplace on the main level will offer Polly’s Pantry, featuring homemade jams, jellies, salsa, and other delicacies; the Sweet Shoppe, offering homemade candy, cookies, pies, breads, and other items; a used book sale; and a chance to win themed giveaway drawing baskets. A Children’s Corner will offer activities for kids. Parents are invited to bring their children from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for free photos with Santa using their own camera or smartphone. The church will be open to tour, and live music will be presented throughout the event.

“St. Luke’s is proud to be a part

of downtown Lebanon, and this bazaar has become a great way to connect with our neighbors,” said Steve Doster, senior warden of the church. “It also helps us raise funds to support both our parish ministries and those in the wider community.”

A team of parishioners has worked to transform the church auditorium into a holiday wonderland, ready for the display of treats and gifts. This year the team had help from members of Boy Scout Troop 20 of Myerstown.

Visitors may enter the church from Sixth Street. The buildings are accessible for those with mobility challenges by way of the newly renovated Chestnut Street entrance and an elevator in the rear of the church that provides access to all levels.

Ulrich to depart the Caring Cupboard

The Caring Cupboard, a community organization dedicated to ending food insecurity in Lebanon County, has announced the departure of its executive director, Shila Ulrich, who has been named the new president of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Ulrich will assume the role at Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in January, bringing nearly two decades of experience and a commitment to hunger relief and community support to the organization.

Under Ulrich’s leadership, the Caring Cupboard has expanded significantly in both outreach and impact, including joining with Jonestown Outreach Pantry in 2023 and championing initiatives that have transformed the way food assistance is provided. She played an instrumental role in securing resources, building partnerships, and innovating service models, including the recent establishment of a new vehicle delivery service aimed at increasing food access in

Campbelltown Community Alliance (CCA) will host its sixth annual holiday tree lighting event on Sunday, Dec. 1, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Campbelltown Community Park, 129 Lawn Road, Palmyra. The event will take place rain or shine. According to CCA president Jen Bushta, the festivities will include food trucks, more than 20 vendors, kids’ games, giveaway drawings, music, photo opportunities, and Santa. The first 100 kids will receive a free gift. The event will culminate with the lighting of the holiday tree at 5 p.m.

The Children’s Corner at a previous bazaar offered activities for kids.

“It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve the Caring Cupboard and work alongside an exceptional team dedicated to addressing hunger and building hope in our community,” said Ulrich. “I am incredibly grateful to our partners, supporters, volunteers, and the entire Lebanon County community for their unwavering support, and I look forward to expanding my work to end hunger across central Pennsylvania.”

The Caring Cupboard’s board of directors expressed its appreciation of Ulrich’s dedication and vision. “Shila has been a transformative leader, and while we are saddened by her departure, we are also excited to see the impact she will make on a larger scale at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank,” said Terry Lewis, chair of the

board of directors.

During this transition, the Caring Cupboard is committed to ensuring continuity in its services, and the organization has named David Fitzkee as acting executive director. Fitzkee will assume the daily operations management and will continue the organization’s efforts with the recently announced Beyond Hunger, Building Hope campaign to fund a new building for the Caring Cupboard. The Caring Cupboard remains steadfast in its mission and will continue to provide support to families in need throughout the region.

Holiday spirit will shine at Christmas at the Star Barn Village

Brittany’s Hope wants everyone to have a sleighful of fun this holiday season. The Elizabethtown-based organization will host Christmas at the Star Barn Village on Saturday, Dec. 7. The event will be held at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.

“Christmas at the Star Barn is the perfect way to begin your family’s Christmas season,” said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope. “Walking in the Star Barn is like entering a magical Christmas wonderland.”

The event will feature breakfast with Santa; pony rides; crafts; a DJ and dance party; and visits from princesses, including

Anna, Elsa and Belle. A Christkindlmarkt will highlight vendors for holiday shopping, and professional photos will caption all the day’s memories.

“The entire day is a gift to Brittany’s Hope from Food for Thought Catering and Stone Gables Estate,” Myers said.

The breakfast buffet will be sponsored by Food for Thought Catering and will be served at six seating times between 7:30 and 10:15 a.m. Tickets will include a special gift delivered by Santa’s helpers, a photo with Santa and access to all activities on the site.

Visitors can stroll the grounds of Stone Gables Estate to take in holiday scenery; play backyard games; enjoy face painting; decorate cookies and

New program aims to improve work zone safety

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) have launched a new, statewide training program to improve new driver safety and roadway worker protection. The launch took place at Carlisle High School to highlight teen driver safety during National Teen Driver Safety Week.

Pennsylvania’s New Driver Work Zone Safety Program is a training project that uses videos, infographics, knowledge checks, and testimonials to teach new drivers work zone laws, signage, and key facts, in addition to offering real-life scenarios to enhance understanding. The new program launched during National Teen Driver Safety Week in October; this annual observance aims to provide education on safe driving to teens and all new drivers in the commonwealth.

The free, 35-minute virtual New Driver Work Zone Safety Program is currently available in English and Spanish. The transportation agencies will also collaborate on hands-on training opportunities to supplement the course.

Last October, Oklahoma became the first state in the nation to require new drivers to pass a work zone

safety course to get their licenses. After hearing about Oklahoma’s program, the PA Turnpike developed a plan to introduce a similar initiative and has been working with PennDOT to make it a reality. The project was funded through $50,000 from the Federal Highway Administration’s State Transportation Innovation Council Incentive Program.

While the program is free and encouraged for all Pennsylvania residents, it is especially geared for new drivers.

Key factors in crashes involving teen drivers in Pennsylvania include driver inexperience, driver distractions, driving too fast for conditions, and improper or careless turning. The risk of a crash involving any of these factors can be reduced through practice, limiting the number of passengers riding with a teen driver, obeying all rules of the road, and using common sense.

The joint training project extends PennDOT and the PA Turnpike’s collaboration on increased work zone safety awareness. Both organizations host work zone-related educational events throughout the year. In March, PennDOT and the PA Turnpike, in partnership with the Pennsylvania State Police, started enforcement of the statewide Work Zone Speed Safety Camera

program, which uses vehicle-mounted systems and electronic speed timing devices to detect and record motorists exceeding posted work zone speed limits by 11 miles per hour or more.

Riding in style: Golf cart accessories

Golf carts are not necessarily reserved for those hitting the links. While it’s true that a cart makes it easier for golfers to travel around a course, the vehicles are popular in and around many residential neighborhoods as well.

Global Market Insights says the golf cart market was valued at $2.5 billion

in 2023, with an estimated growth of more than 7.5% expected between 2024 and 2032. The carts are regularly used in residential communities, on university campuses, at campgrounds, and in small towns. Many homes in suburban communities, like those being built in Texas, Florida, and

Proceeds from the event will benefit the mission of Brittany’s Hope to aid orphaned and at-risk children. Brittany’s Hope provides adoption grants for families to adopt special needs children, and the organization also supports humanitarian efforts with its partner

children’s homes in Vietnam, Kenya and Ethiopia.

“One hundred percent of all proceeds are dedicated to the children we serve,” Myers shared. “Attending Christmas at the Star Barn is a gift to your family and a gift to orphaned and at-risk children. What better Christmas gift can you give?”

cup holders attach easily to the rear accessory bar and elsewhere.

- Upgraded tires: Tires that come standard on most golf carts are not the most durable, according to Matt’s Custom Golf Carts. Replacing the tires with ones designed for the terrain the cart will travel the most can be a wise investment.

The Caring Cupboard grew out of a program initiated by a Sunday school class in the Palmyra Church of the Brethren to help food-insecure families in Palmyra. The pantry is now an independent organization that is growing rapidly to serve much of northern and western Lebanon County. It has collected and distributed food to more than 15,000 households in the last year and has

merged with the Jonestown Outreach Pantry, allowing it to greatly expand its service area to include almost 40% of the people in Lebanon County. On Oct. 24, the Caring Cupboard broke ground for the construction of a new $7 million facility on East Broad Street in Palmyra. This new facility will allow the Caring Cupboard to provide Palmyra with meeting space for community organizations, health care facilities, a mobile library, and 12 affordable housing units, as well as a much larger and more modern food pantry.

- New lighting: Improve on visibility and style by customizing lighting accessories on the golf cart. Many carts are being used to get around town, so it pays to have brighter headlights to see roadways and increase the cart’s visibility to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

- Anti-slip mats: These mats can help ensure passengers stay safe and

secure when stepping in and out of the golf cart, particularly on rainy days. Custom floor mats are available so people can put even more style into their ride.

- Side mirrors: Improve on safety with the addition of side mirrors. Icon Electric Vehicles says most factory golf carts feature only one small, center-mounted mirror so drivers can view the roadway behind them. While adequate for the golf course, a one-mirror setup may not be safe for the open road. Adding side mirrors can help to elevate the safety factor.

- Speakers: Adding speakers to a golf cart can make the ride even more enjoyable. Bluetooth speakers may not require any special wiring and can work with a smartphone. Golf carts are turning up outside of golf courses, making them a go-to second vehicle for people in various communities. Accessorizing a golf cart can improve the driving experience.

- Tinted windshield: Some golf carts do not come with windshields. The addition of one, particularly a tinted version, can help reduce glare and protect against debris and bugs while driving.
